Clear, Cole, & Reisig present a thorough overview of classic and historical correctional philosophy that is strongly tied to their discussion of more contemporary issues. Each revision includes the most up to date, critically acclaimed research from top criminology journals. Additionally, they regularly cite the best government sources (such as the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Federal Bureau of Prisons) to support various claims. In sum, this is a fair and balanced approach to all of the important issues facing corrections. I have taught Corrections for many years, and would not consider using a book other than American Corrections.

Great corrections book

Review Date: 2006-02-01
I've taught college-level corrections courses for quite a few years now and have kicked around a number of different corrections texts. This new edition is definitely an improvement over previous ones--it's much heavier on the recent empirical research, which helps me to keep my students "on track" with what the actual research indicates regarding a number of correctional topics.

I do have some students who may take issue with the authors' discussion on certain subjects (much like one of the reviewers here), yet much of their dissatisfaction is likely to arise out of their disappointment that the reality of corrections is different from their preconceived ideas of what corrections "should" be about (in general, such dissatisfaction is expressed by my younger, more close-minded, right-wing zealot students who have a long way to go before they're capable of thinking critically).

In short, it's a great corrections text. It might be a bit lengthy for a single course on a quarter system, but if you're teaching on a semester system it's great because you won't need to hoist a bunch of supplementary materials/books onto your students (this edition is more than enough to last you a full semester).

Worst Criminal Justice Textbook I've ever read

The name of this book should be 'The Overly-Liberal, Bleeding-Heart View of Corrections'. This was by far the worst criminal justice textbook that I have ever read. I expect textbooks for classes to give the facts and be somewhat unbiased. This book gave a VERY one-sided view which portrayed anyone that is convicted of a crime to be the actual victim; all the way from investigation to parole. This view would have been fine if it had been countered with the other side as well. I was very disappointed. I read it from from front to cover, and it was brutal. This should be a book on opinion, instead of a textbook.

The book is packed with information on an intriguing and eye-opening subject matter. Gary Webb cites what appears to be legitimate references adding credibility to the story's claims. The abundance of information did become overwhelming at times. Although after completing the book I found myself thinking "Right, wrong or indifferent...It all makes perfect sense. There's nothing not to believe about it."

Every time the news reports a homicide even remotely connected to crack (and this would include most gang related murders, even to this day..), they should mention the international crack trade and its role. This will never happen, obviously, which is why we need people like the late Gary Webb in this country.

My only problem with the book, it goes into detail a bit too extensive for my attention span. But there's an obvious reason for this; the book is primarily written to back up his news story in which the mainstream press vilified him for, accusing him of unsubstantiated claims. The full circle detail is necessary. Fortunately, Webb is a good enough writer where even someone with no more than a high school education, like myself, can hang in there and read the entire book without resorting to skimming over paragraphs. Just when I start to say to myself, "alright, got it, we know these guys are contras, we know they're dope runners...what now?", the question is seemingly answered in the following paragraph. I don't know if a writer could have done a better job balancing the act of exhausting resources and laying all of them into full detail and making the book understandable to a lay person like me.

One of the most important books ever written on government corruption and its effect on it's citizenry. As you're reading this review, crack cocaine is still eating American inner cities alive. Rest in Peace, Gary Webb. And may your courageous reporting echo through this country as long as poor American communities suffer from this pandemic.

I love to cook and have stacks of cookbooks, but this one is the best of the bunch. I have the older version of this book, and every recipe I tried has been a huge crowd pleaser. Even my kids like these recipes. My husband's favorite meal used to be meatloaf with mashed potatos and gravy. Now he begs me to make turkey burgers. When I make a recipe from this book it seems to come out perfect the first time and every time after. I never knew healthy food could be so delicious. I think anyone would enjoy meals prepared from these recipes, even if your not on weight watchers.

I'll be honest and tell you I haven't actually tried any of the recipes but I have ear marked several pages and many look great. Plus there is a pretty good variety. My biggest beef is the lack of pictures. I find that without them, sometimes the name doesn't give me a clear picture of what the finished product should look like. I do like the little tidbits at the bottom of many pages regarding where to buy some possibly hard to find items or safety tips.

I am currently using this textbook for my Constitutional Law class at Winthrop University, and i would like to comment that the book is very well written and easily read. The one problem that i have is that the Opinions of the court are not complete, but only the highlights have been stated, as completely understandable, but I find the extra information also informative when trying to write papers on the Opinions, not just the highlights. I otherwise think that the book is superb and quite helpful in my class.

I bought this print of the U.S. Constitution at first because my pocket Constitution had almost fallen apart.
When I got it in the mail I thought it was very pretty, but I was a little surprised at house large the print was. The print IS very large - so I guess it would be helpful for those who have bad vision, it isn't a BAD characteristic of the layout of the book, I was just surprised.
It is also very helpful because it holds The Constitution, The Declaration of Independence and The Articles of Confederation.
I am very pleased with it!
And I thought it was very humorous when amazon emailed me asking if I would give a review of the U.S. Constitution. HAHA!

I think every American citizen should read this. Our government has drifted so far from what the Constitution originally intended, and most people haven't got a clue about it. This is a very handy booklet to have around! Get it, read it, and form YOUR OWN beliefs about government and stop listening to everyone else trying to give you their version!

It's not reliable science but there are a couple of interesting propositions
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-06
It's easy to criticise this book and yet there are still a few interesting hypotheses here.

Ries and Trout say much the same things over and over in all their books, speeches, and videos. So each book then needs a new angle and here they take the slant of presenting their views as natural (i.e. scientific laws). They admirably write "There are laws of nature, so why shouldn't there be laws of marketing ? You can build a great-looking airplane but it isn't going to get off the ground unless it adheres to the laws of physics, especially the law of gravity...So it follows that you can build a brilliant marketing program only to have one of the immutable laws knock you flat if you don't know what they are."

Unfortunately Ries and Trout's understanding of what is a scientific law is pretty patchy, so many of the `laws' they present are more like propositions or suggestions for doing marketing. Even the best of the 22 immutable laws are vague, none are quantified, nowhere are the conditions described where the laws hold and where they do not, and none are based on systematic collection of evidence (just anecdotes). A number are just repeats of each other, while some are tautological statements. In spite of all these weaknesses there is an underlying theoretical proposition that is interesting and worth some discussion and research.

The first, and presumably most important of the 22 `laws' is the "law of leadership - it's better to be first [into a market] than it is to be best. This idea of pioneering advantage has been well researched in the academic literature, with the recent definitive articles showing that the advantage is over-rated (Golder, 1993; Tellis, 1996). Very many brand leaders were not the first into their category, but then Ries and Trout contradict themselves anyway with their third law (the law of the mind) - "it's better to be first in the mind than to be first in the marketplace". And this is really what the book, and their others, are about - that marketing is a battle to gain some mindshare. They argue that this is easier if you are the first to be associated with a category benefit and if you retain this leadership (`laws' 1,2,3,4). Hence they argue for focus on being known for one thing (`laws' 5,6,13,14) so they argue against brand extension (`law' 12). Clearly the `law' isn't absolute, as they used it as basis for previously criticizing Microsoft while praising focused competitors like Lotus and Harvard Graphics (and we all know where these brands are now).

They also argue that categories split, becoming more specialist over time, and that is useful to use this fragmentation (`law' 10). It's for this reason that Al (and daughter Laura) Ries incorrectly predicted the flop of the iPhone. Still it's an interesting proposition that needs considerable research.

Most of their other laws are just quaint platitudes, patronising their readers and padding out this short book with lame advice like "things are unpredictable" (`law' 17), "success can lead to arrogance" (`law' 18), "it's good to learn from your failures" (`law' 19) "things are often different than how they appear in the press" (`law' 20) "it's better to build on a trend than a fad" (`law' 21) and "without adequate funding an idea won't get off the ground" (`law' 22).

Reading the 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing is a lot like eating a Twinkie. It's light and yummy, with no pesky nutrition to slow you down. An enjoyable and easy read, but not much substance. There are some principles presented here that are indeed central to the field of marketing - the Law of the Mind and the Law of Resources to name two. And you wouldn't want to be the marketer who hasn't read Ries and Trout. But this is just a taste of marketing. You'll need to read more to get a full meal.

Another Marketing Bible

Review Date: 2008-03-13
Now this is one of the most simple books I've ever read on the subject, but it's chock full of the true rules on marketing.

Some might say it's a slap in the face or without substance but the TRUTH is that these are very simple laws, and if applied correctly will help one be able to market.

I always refer to this book when launching a new clients product. Of course, you can't market without research and many other things, but if you apply these simple laws to your research and creative content, you will do well. So the truth is it's simple. It's not rocket science and it can be done..

Trout and Ries write the laws on marketing
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-27
Using actual examples and sharp analysis, Al Ries and Jack Trout offer 22 "laws" that amount to a basic, concise distillation of their marketing experience and wisdom. Their examples are pithy enough to keep the most jaded marketing person engaged. And their lessons are embedded verities that would be hard to dispute. The only drawback is that this classic may be a bit dated, so it is interesting to see how surprisingly well some of their original observations have fared over the years. We recommend this classic to anyone seriously interested in marketing. After all, you can't ignore the law.

This book should be reduced by half in size. I have found many repeats, lenthy descriptions for easy-to-understand subjects, and hard to separate important issues from trivia. To be fair, I learned what I need from the book, but spent more than necessary in time and energy to sort out weeds from goods.

I am surprised to find so many positive comments for the book, which make me suspicious to buy other books based on them.
