This book was pretext for Karl MARX idea of communism. Rousseau blamed inequality among people due to ownership of property.

I find Rousseau especially creative in the way he describes how inequality progressed from the time the first humans made contact. He makes a good case for the solitary life. I think Rousseau believes it is destructive whenever humans come together in groups. Governments were formed to protect the weaker from the stronger or as Rousseau thinks to actually protect the rich from the poor. This is an outstanding book. It will haunt you.

This is a wonderful example of the 18th century enlightenment. In this work, Rousseau states that inequalities of rank, wealth, and power are the inevitable result of the civilizing process, something most of us have found to be very true if unfair. This new translation also includes all of Rousseau's own notes.

I enjoyed this tremendously, and am always amazed that the thought pattern and process is oneof the few things that hasn't changed over the centuries.

Excellent discourse. This book discusses some of the rudiments of the history of inequality and how its self supporting and ever existing in human nature. I recommend this book for those readers who either want to increase their knowledge on Jean-Jacques Rousseau or historical development of inequality

Man, Animal -- Manimal!

Review Date: 2003-09-18
This essay was Rousseaus's submission to the Academy of Dijon contest, entitled, "Has the progress of the arts and sciences contributed more to the corruption or purification of morals?".

This text is his story about Nature, and Society, and the scandal that happens when people come together, build, divide, dance, sing, and compare themselves with one another. In many ways, it is his answer to the problem of evil.

Natural man is, in many ways, good, because his needs are immediately felt and immediately fulfilled. Social man begins to compete, to hoard, and to use cunning to enslave his fellows, to gain their esteem, take their property, and sometimes their lives.

His picture of the natural man is half what we think of an "animal" and half the "human" that we recognize in ourselves. He shifts his description as the flow of arguement dictates. The habitual provocateur, Rousseau - watch him!

In a way, he is rewriting the Christian "Creation Myth". In his version, evil does not originate at that moment when man eats the fruit of the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" --to "be like God"; it happens when Adam wants a better apple than Eve's got for herself. Before society develops as we know it, Adam would have been fine with just a pear.

Wow,wow, wow. I purchased this book because it was suggested to me from a friend about a year ago I finally bought it and I am so glad I did. I am a very skeptical person when it comes to self help books, but I have to say this wasn't a self help book at all. Roth makes you truly examine yourself by sharing her story and then asking questions that make you think about why we do the things we do (eat). What feelings are we surpressing? THIS BOOK IS NOT A "HOW TO GUIDE" - it just tells her story and other people stories and I bet anyone could find a piece of themselves in this book. It was funny and light hearted, not drab and psychological. I loved it so much I couldn't put it down and I ended up ordering 2 more of her books - Breaking Free of Emotional & Compulsive Eating.

If nothing else, the book is a great read. I highly recommend it.

I am not known for my reading abilities but this was an "easy" read!
Sometimes, Geneen seemed to go into a lot of "personal" stories that might seem like she was losing tract of the purpose of her book. I was often able to see the reason behind it as she was trying to drive a point across by relating her stories (and others') so that the reader can see the relationship between food and love. Overall, I think there were some very good points that she brought out that I never would have seen or thought of had it not been for this book.

A must read for any woman or man who struggles with their body and weight...

I highly respect the work done by Geneen Roth - helping others overcome eating disorders and sharing bits of her own life experiences with us through her writings comforts us in knowing she has 'been there, done that.' She knows what she is talking about. I had heard of 'emotional eating' for a long time but always denied I had any type of intimate relationship with food, but over the past 3 years, going through highly stressful times and gaining 30 pounds in the process, I finally realized one day as I was eating my way through a bag of chips knowing that I shouldn't but feeling totally helpless, I realized that I was treating food as a long-lost-love-of-my-life. I can start a diet on any given day, but rest-assured by lunch time I 'miss' my regular junk so bad that I revert back to my not-so-healthy ways of eating. So I put the chips aside and looked up emotional eating on line and found so much about Geneen Roth and realized she's the one with the great articles in magaizines I've been reading for so long! So I order this book and within a few days I had read it all and had a greater understanding of how I'm using food to shove down my emotions. Instead of turning to people to share my emotions with I turn to food, because food will not reject me and food doesn't care how bad I'm feeling, it is there when I need it and distracts me from the stress in my life. I've never before been able to put into words my unhealthy, unbreakable relationship with food. This book doesn't offer a lot of 'advice' on how to deal with those emotions (I think she has another book for that I'm going to find and read)...but it is all about helping us understand our emotional selves better and our need for good social relationships and not to replace it with a food relationship or some other self-destructive pattern like drugs or alcohol. The first step is admitting/recognizing what the problem is...and this book has helped me do that. And so far since I have read this book I am overcoming my own emotional scars and using food for nourishment and healing instead of using food to comfort me or help me cope (that's what people are for!). Loving myself and being good to myself instead of abusing my body with food. I've always heard that losing weight "is not about the food". Now I really believe it. It's not about will-power or self control. It's about being mentally present and in the moment about what goes on in our minds, instead of mindlessly eating through a bag of chips or a carton of ice-cream or a whole bag of marshmallows. Thanks Geneen! Looking forward to reading more from you!

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This book was well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed the material covered in the book.

Of course, the professor of the course I was taking added a lot of personal material which was extremely helpful, but overall this was a great book for the course.

There is definitely room for improvement as there were quite a few grammar and spelling errors in this book as well as two instances of absolutely incorrect legal information concerning family law which the professor had to bring to our attention.

This book touched me on many levels. I have a lot in common with Robert personally, as I meandered around a bit career-wise and tended bar in Dallas (ahhh, the 80s)- hahaha! As I read along, several times my head literally SPUN as I stopped and re-read passage after passage.

The book reads as if you were sitting with a dear friend and he was sharing his life story and then his life philosophy with you. That is how it make me feel, as if a very wise friend was teaching me one on one.

Read Janet's review for all the specifics, I am sharing that this particular book touched me on a soul level and I am adding it to my list of books to give friends. It is a life-affirming, life-altering, life-loving book.

Thank you Robert for sharing! I found your book to be easy-to-read, I devoured every page in within three days. As a serious seeker of metaphysics, I found your writing to be insightful, clever, and I could feel your sense of humor coming through. By the way, thank you for sharing your experience of working in the bar, the visual image really made me laugh out loud. Tying your philosophies to client experience really grounded the ideas. Well done my friend!

I recommend this book absolutely!

I was impressed with this book. Here we have a top notch psychic in possession of a clear and sharp mind. A devastating combination which Ohotto puts to excellent use. He has obviously read voraciously around his subject, particularly pioneering literature arising from hypnotherapy research connected with past life retrieval. The likes of Brian Weiss, Michael Newton, and Robert Schwartz are all clearly visible. However do not expect an academic study or citing of sources because you will not find them.
The book is written for a US audience of spiritual seekers and coming from the UK myself we might wonder at the dilemmas he poses such as whether to have plastic surgery or not. But he puts this within the context of the cult of youth which is pervasive in the spoiled developed world. He is encouraging us to face our life with an awareness of spiritual perspective. I thought the book very sound and am sure it will help a lot of people. One wonders if he isn't about to become a demi god, expect to see him on Oprah any time soon.

This book was incredible. I could not put it down! When I finally finished it on one Sunday, my husband asked me "Are you finished? You haven't talked to me all weekend!"
It captured my interest as my family lived near, Reine's corner, the trash truck depot, the junk yard and the Busy's. I knew the selectmen and some of the officers mentioned.
This should become a movie! It reminded me of the type of story as "The Client".
The Busby's were so brave, I didn't realize what they were living through as my school bus drove passed their house each afternoon. I remember all of a sudden a tall stockade fence appearing around the house. I am still amazed at how Polly continued school through all of this!
Great reading!!

loved this book. I found it fascinating and a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down and read it in one day. When I did take breaks, I came out and told my family what I had read. I usually do that, and they're usually not interested. They found my reports on this story as engaging as I did. What struck me most about this book was the love. I think Polly's strength, and John's strength, too, were probably the source of this love, and the children responded to it. They couldn't have survived without that love.

Appalling miscarriage of justice....amazing family.

I preordered this book back in June and had forgotten about it until it arrived in my mailbox. I started reading it last night and am almost halfway through it. I grew up on Cape Cod, and never heard of this until a few years ago when the suspected shooter's wife was murdered. This story hits really close to home, because my father was a police officer, and my worst fear was that he would get hurt/killed at his job. This family is amazing. The hell that they went through, and the complete miscarriage of justice is appalling. There is no question that this case was completely bungled/covered up.

John Busby is an advocate for extending the statute of limitations on crimes against police officers. A few years ago, the brother of the suspected shooter admitted he was the driver while his brother shot Officer Busby, but because the statute of limitations had run out, he could not be charged.

Ironically, the suspected shooter has been in a mental institution because he suffers from dementia since 2001. Some call it poetic justice. Amazing and haunting, don't miss this book.

After having gone to law school and studying under a prosecutor I took this evidence course using this textbook from a retired Marine JAG officer and it was outstanding. This book is well written and it describes the laws governing different types of evidence. Whether it be verbal statements, hearsay, things said before or after arrest or other documentation, this book covers it all. It applies the laws of Search and Seizure and describes and applies the Exclusionary Rule (Fruits of the Poisonous Tree Doctrine/Derivative Evidence Rule). This book also explains and applies vehicle stops, arrest, and search warrant requirements. Taught by a retired Marine JAG officer and Asst Prosecutor made it that much better.

I've read several books on the FBI Special Agent career path, and this book is the most informative overall collection of data available. This is the only book I've read that details the specifics of an agent's career path and what to expect during various levels of an agent's career. It also provides excellent preparation for the two Phases of the agent application process, and I highly recommend this book to any person who is about to embark on the lengthy Special Agent application process.

Pithy and informative

This was the best FBI book I've been able to get my hands on. In the book you will learn about all phases of the application process in detail. Also, you will learn which applicants are the most competitive and why. Pay grades and benefits are included and fully explained. There is also a nice section on the six month training period that takes place at Quantico, Virginia for those who are selected to join the FBI's ranks. The author describes what an average day might be like for a special agent.

The reason I did not rate this book as 5 stars is because the author really did not describe the different divisions and responsibilities of each task force within the FBI (at least not with much detail). For example, he barely mentions any SWAT components and does not mention the Hostage Rescue Team at all. It would have been nice for there to have been more information about what each individual unit does and how they go about getting it done. However, I would still strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn the basics about the FBI. They are covered very adequately in this book.
