I just came across the writings of Florence Scovel Shinn in my reading and research of the New Thought movement at the turn of the century. I am enthralled and completely amazed at the simplicity of the thought, especially written by such a tender hearted person as Shinn. I love this book and will treasure it always.

I was first given 'The Game of Life' when I was 15. I had trouble with it at first; although I understood the principles were sound, the use of 'God Language' and the Bible references put me off. At the time I was in the process of breaking all ties to the church I'd been brought up in.

I came back to Florence Scovel Shinn when I was about 19, when someone gave me this, the four books in one. The word 'god' still grated on me at that point, so I was advised by a friend that whenever Shinn used it in the book, I mentally insert the word 'Universe' in its place. It worked, and this book became the one book I bring absolutely everywhere. For me, it works much the same way that the Bible did for my grandmother: if I have a question, I think of the question, open the book, and invariably that page gives me the answer, or a strong clue to the answer.

Eight years on, and I'm past my issues with the semantics, knowing that god / the universe / love / divine intelligence are all one. And I still refer to this book at least a few times a week. It's lovingly written, always with light humour interspersed with sound and profound wisdom, and I recommend it to anyone - whether or not you believe in 'God' :)

I was very hesitant in buying another book. For some reason, I thought this was just another one of those "self-help" books and who needs more of those? Well, this book is quite different. It's a necessity...it's life changing. Once you begin to read it, you can't put it down. I am not a big reader, but I read it in 1 week. I immediately started applying the things that I learned and I am telling you, this stuff works. I would challenge anyone who is going through a difficult time and who needs a wake-up call in life to read Florence Scovel. One you begin to change your words and your thoughts, your entire world begins to change...and IMMEDIATELY!

This was the first book I ever read to try and combat my binge eating behavior that has been present for about seven years. I saw myself in all of the symptoms, but when I tried the program it almost made me more obsessed with food. Plus, I couldn't keep up with the "schedule" with my lifestyle. I understand that schedules are crucial for anorexics but for me it was not the answer. I have since read Intuitive Eating and I highly recommend that for anyone who has tried to stop binge eating and eating emotionally.

I picked up this book over two years ago, and since then I have lost 55 pounds. This book was the first and most important step to beginning the process. I began binge eating - having learned it from my mother - in my early teens. It's all about the comfort & "zoning out", self-medicating if you will. I have HATED my body (and ergo myself) since the age 22, the point at which my metabolism slowed and I stopped being as active as I had been up until I got married, and the binge eating caught up with me.

This book provided the insight I needed to UNDERSTAND the disorder. I truly believe the key to overcoming any inner battle is education. I could not lose weight ("eat less, move more") on sheer willpower or for that fit-into-a-bikini mentality. Now I'm all about longevity, mental health, energy, and etc. Those are the true reasons to eat well and keep moving.

I gave this book to a friend, and now I looking for another copy to keep in my library forever, both for reference when I struggle, and to share with any of my other friends and acquaintances who comment on my new shape and want to know "How did you do it?"

This book had some really helpful things to help get over bingeing, I really like all the useful information, great book.

The book has definate guidelines for overcoming this horrid vile eating disorder. The first time I used the book I had fantastic results but as the author points out, the possiblity for relapse is great. And believe me Mr. Fairburn knows what he is talking about. Recently I have gone backto the book and its concept but with no success, however, as the author points out No program will work if the person is not truly sincere about wanting to bring about a change. All in all: it is a good book, definately worth owning and despite the fact that THIS time I have not had the success I was looking for, I will continue to think of Christoper Fairburn as the second coming of Christ.

I purchased Dr. Fairburn's book about 5 years ago. By faithfully writing my food down daily and following his program, i stopped binge eating for over a year!

Since that time, I have fallen off of the 'program' and am out of control with my eating again. I have tried WW, but my weight loss was only temporary and i began to binge and gained everything back. I've attempted to get back 'on the Fairburn program' several times, but I'll start keeping track and monitor my food by writing...and then, i'll start to slip and stop writing. The rest of the story goes downhill.

I know success is possible as I proved to myself by not binging for a year that i could gain control over my binging.

I want to re-dedicate myself to this program and I'm looking to gain the support of others who have this book, are just buying it or have been using it with success.

This book was very suspenseful and entertaining but I am sick of books and movies that get you interested and then just end with little/no closure. This is one of those so if you want to know what happens to the characters and have things wrapped up, dont read this because apparently the author got bored and decided to just say 'the end' without finishing. At least that's how it felt to me anyway.

A tightly plotted, suspenseful story that keeps the pages turning. The question of "is she still alive" filled my head for most of the story, and I couldn't put the book down until I'd found out. Nicely done.

The ending was a little too rushed for my taste. I understand it's because of Cass's current state of mind, but I thought the shift was too sudden. Maybe because, throughout the book we see the story from the perspective of three people. Then, after the rescue, we only see Cass. I'd have liked to see a tiny bit from Kyle, knowing the state of mind Cass was in, and know how he felt about that. I think it would have rounded things out a bit more. Just my opinion. :)

What Happened to Cass McBride? by Gail Giles

When Kyle Kirby's brother commits suicide, Kyle must punish the girl who pushed David over the edge. He kidnaps the popular, smart, go-getting Cass McBride and buries her alive! Now, Cass is suddenly alone with herself, her thoughts, and her harsh words. But even she knows there's only one way out of the box she's in--Kyle.

"What Happened to Cass McBride?" is told through first person via Cass's eyes and Kyle's which is an interesting turn. You see clearly the motivation behind each one's actions. The detective searching for Cass is told in third person, but is necessary to move the story closer toward the resolution of finding Cass and catching Kyle. The story is intriguing and draws you in.

As Cass must analyze Kyle, she must also self-analyze. She is not merely speaking to his psyche to gain freedom. When she learns the details of David's suicide, she realizes she is to blame and she is fraught with guilt. Cass really transforms through her ordeal, and although no one could be the same after an experience like that, we know that Cass McBride will be a stronger, better person afterward.

Although, a powerful book, there isn't a lot of emotion. I feel for Cass McBride and the situation she finds herself in, but I'm not in the box with her. I remain safely detached from the situation. Still, the story is compelling and the characters motives are well explained and understood and you will empathize.

It was an interesting book and can hold the attention of youths and adults alike, but as an adult reader, I finished quickly and consider myself having read a great "young adult" novel.

What Happened to Cassie McBride is a suspenseful, page-turner which will not disappoint Young Adult readers. Gail Gillies has a intriguing way of making her characters come alive as well as encouraging teenagers to keep reading. Her creative characterization and foreshadowing motivate the reader.
I have read four of Gail Gillies's novels for reluctant readers, and everyone of her books is powerful, suspenseful and thought-provoking. I encourage all teenagers, even those who would rather be on the internet, to read one of her novels; you won't be disappointed!

Cass McBride is an ordinary, popular teenaged girl with a sometimes cruel sense of humor and a conniving mind that will do anything to become better than the other girls, from becoming the first junior homecoming queen, to leaving notes under her desk for her friends to find, read and laugh. One of these notes got her into BIG trouble. That day, she had been asked out by David Kirby, a nerdy guy who normally she wouldn't give the time of day to. Not wanting to hurt his feelings, she said "Some other time," and then left the hurtful note that pointed out how much of a dork he was and other unsavory things. Not expecting him to find the note, she set it under her desk for her friend to find. But David found it. The next day, David Kirby's body was found hanging by a rope from a tree in his front yard with a note pinned to his body. Not his shirt, but his body. The note said, "Words are teeth, and they eat me alive. Feed on my corpse instead."

Seeking revenge, David's brother, Kyle Kirby, takes Cass from her suburban home and puts her in a box, or rather a crate. He places this crate in a greenhouse several feet underground. No one but him, because he is the gardener for the estate on which the greenhouse is situated, would stumble upon her. Kyle, however, left her with a tube of air and a walkie-talkie. The reason he leaves her alive, for now at least, is so that she can understand what she had done to his brother. And now, using the persuasive skills learned from her conniving salesman of a father, Cass must make him see that it wasn't her fault; that he should release her. Though at first she thinks she is powerless, Cass discovers that she has one weapon: words. So the questions are: Was it Cass who "killed" David Kirby? Or was it David and Kyle's mother who blamed David for her less-than-perfect life? And an even bigger, more important question, will Cass survive being buried alive?

Gail Giles writes wonderfully in that she shows the way words affect us using the story of a tragic suicide and a kidnapped young girl. She also shows that when people have no solution, they blame others only for the sake of themselves. "What Happened to Cass McBride" is for readers 15 and up.

The problem with this book, is that you cannot argue for copyrights on one hand, and against them on the other. Either there is intellectual property or there is not. If there is not, then it is a government granted monopoly, and government granted monopolies can be shown to be less efficient then the market. As such, this means that copyrights would not do a better job at encouraging ingenuity. The thing is the book seems to talk about the philosophy of it a lot more then the reality of it.

A great presentation on why we should go to copyleft or the creative commons.

This book does not really explore aspects of copy protection beyond profit. Copy protection's original purpose was to protect others from taking your intellectual work and pretending to be theirs without giving the original authors any credit. So yes, copyright protection is indeed important, as it encourages creativity when implemented properly.

This is an insightful though often quick and unfocused examination of the history of copyright law. Vaidhyanathan outlines the deceptively complicated realm of copyright law from its origins in medieval Europe to current issues with peer-to-peer networks and intellectual property. Through his sometimes creative use of legal precedents and historical trends, Vaidhyanathan reaches a few outstanding insights here, such as debunking the incorrect impression that the term "copyright" implies a right when it is actually a privilege; while modern crazes like hip-hop sampling and MP3 file sharing are not direct violations of copyright law but instead offer harsh illuminations of the gaps and inconsistencies in that law. Most importantly, the highly varied nuances and applications of copyright law in the past have been ruinously combined in recent years into the poorly defined, but disastrously applied, concept of intellectual property. Thus we have the modern corporatist view of everything as "property" that can be owned, bought, and sold, including ideas and expression.

Vaidhyanathan provides plenty of believable evidence that this troublesome doctrine, while often disingenuously trotted out to supposedly protect original creators, does little more than enrich corporations while also chilling free speech and restricting creativity. The problem with this book is Vaidhyanathan's poorly constructed writing style, with distracting jumps in subject matter and unnecessary academic theoretical investigations into phenomena of doubtful value to the reader. An example is the chapter-long dissertation on Mark Twain's certainly voluminous but questionably influential (or relevant) thoughts on copyright law. Meanwhile, Vaidhyanathan's goal of finding the best answers to these problems is trickled out in passing throughout the book, rather than appearing authoritatively in the book's very rushed conclusion. But otherwise, if you can handle some reader-unfriendly passages, this is an acceptable look at the complex world of copyright law and how it is currently moving in all the wrong directions. I am writing this primarily to defend the style used by Dr. Vaidhyanathan in this book. The person who commented anonymously (as "a reader") suggested it was written at a second grade reading level. That was not a mistake.

I recently found an interview Dr. Vaidhyanathan gave to a magazine concerning this book, and he said that, "I went looking for a clearly written book for laypeople to read [about copyright], and I found that there wasn't one. I thought I should probably write one."

Copyright law is at best difficult to "translate", and and this book is an excellent beginner resource. "A Reader" complains that Dr. Vaidhyanathan is biased toward less restrictive copyright laws, but I can only imagine that "A Reader" is in fact a representative of a large corporation which holds very many copyrights it wishes to protect. I don't think that the average American who wishes to copy his/her CDs onto his/her iPod without being subject to prosecution would wish for more restrictive copyright laws.

Dr. Vaidhyanathan holds copyrights, but does not fight for very restrictive measures regarding his works. Think about what that means about his "bias."

As far as finding works which quote court decisions about copyright issues, and are written at a very highbrow level, just look for James Boyle's works. However, it is important to mention that he, also, believes that copyright laws have become very restrictive, especially since the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998.

I have been thinking more about planning for a estate, investing in a trust, and buying life insurance after becoming a parent. This book contains some good basic information which is exactly what I was looking for. Good buy!

Extremely helpful for the lay person. My mother introduced us to an older edition. She was ahead of her time with the living trust idea. Even though I would eventually use a lawyer, this helps you know the right questions to ask.

If you are like most Americans and do not expect to have a multi-million dollar estate when you die, then this isn't the book for you. Just max out your IRA and 401(k), and read a book about living trusts. (However, you might still be interested to learn how many ways the super-rich can circumvent estate taxes by legal artifice.)

If you do have a substantial estate, then this book is a great place to start. If nothing else, it tells you whether or not you need a lawyer. Even if you do, I would still recommend reading this book cover-to-cover, so that you fully understand your estate plan and are aware of the alternatives, as well as of the implications of tax law changes.

It's a shame that laymen have to waste their brainpower worrying about such unnecessary complexity as financial estate planning, but so long as the majority suffer from the delusion that this is an effective means of taxation, we're stuck with it. This book will guide you through the complexity.

Let's face it, this stuff is complicated, and pretty much meant to keep lawyers in business. Get this book as a reference and be able to answer a lot of the questions on your own.

This is a wonderful book on estate planning that focuses on legal and practical issues. I loved it. As I read through it I did not see any inaccuracies in the law or in the subject matter. I especially enjoyed reading about the different options one has regarding how to leave property to minor children. And it includes a thorough discussion on the ways to save on estate taxes.

This book is written for the nonlawyer. And it is not designed to cover in detail ancillary subjects related to estate planning. It is applicable to all states (except Louisiana) and DC. It will be useful for people with estates of any amount. But because of its comprehensive nature I seriously doubt that people with insignificant estates will want to read it. There are other less comprehensive books those people should read. There is no reason to get overwhelmed about estate planning when there is no need to do so.

This book does not provide prepackaged estate plans to be used as templates for readers. Subjects not covered are elder law, retirement planning, and financial planning. However, I think Chapter 13 concerning Retirement Benefits came pretty close to being a superficial chapter on retirement planning.

I would have liked the book better if chapters 3 and 10 had been combined. And I realize that most estate planning authors include retirement planning and incapacity planning in their books. But I view those subjects as being separate and apart from estate planning and should have been left out of this book. Ergo, I'd get rid of chapters 13 and 26. Maybe they could be the subject of another Nolo book? The coverage of state law exemptions regarding probate seemed out of place to me, too. I don't think the intended audience of this book really cares about that material.

My favorite chapters were 15 to 23. Understanding estate and gift taxes and how to reduce or eliminate them is what estate planning is mostly about. And it was wonderful seeing Chapter 22 (Disclaimers) and Chapter 28 (Small Business Owner issues). These subjects are ignored in most estate planning books.

I thought the author went a little heavy on being anti-Probate throughout the text. Probate has its good points and its bad. I would have liked the book better if the author had just stuck to the facts and not gone overboard giving his slant on the topic. 5 stars!

This book details the ATF's extensive attempt to infiltrate the Hells Angels. The operation put the undercover agents through hell and produced nothing. The agents discovered that the Hells Angels displayed far more loyalty and genuine caring for them than their supervisors did. The operation was poorly run and poorly planned. Millions of dollars of taxpayer's money spent with no results. This book does provide a limited "insider's" view of the Hells Angels, but provides a better illustration of federal law enforcement's paranoia and obsession with biker clubs.

This book is absolute GARBAGE. A middle schooler could write a better book. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. I want my money back

I thought this book would be much better from the hype I read. No so as it is long and boring. Not much action, constant repeating and not much of a story. Maybe they could not tell much because of secrets not being allowed out. Yeah, that's it!

The job done by the cops - tough and respectable. The job done by the Angels - tough and respectable. The job done by the author - weak. Reads like a fiction novel.

This was absolutely the worst wriiten book I have ever read. The subject matter is great and should be very interesting and informative but the author DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO WRITE. It makes no sense and the characters are unidentifiable. It is very unfortunate the ATF agents risked their lives and allowed the author to butcher their story. Please do not waist your time or money on this book like I did.

excelent. I am interest to read this book, because it that can made me seriouslly to anticipation juvenile delinquency, especially about kid behavior.

Read this one a couple of years ago.
In my opinion, this book is the best book written on the subject.
Very practical guide to distressed debt analysis; very structured, easy to read, great overview of potential legal issues. Helps a reader to develop a right mindset for distressed debt investing.

If you are looking at distressed assets (not just debt) of any kind, this is the only book you need.

All bases are covered, from legal proceedings, financial statement analysis, to market micro-structure.

This is not a suitable book for retail investors, unless the issue happens to be very large and liquid (e.g. Calpine debt in 12/'07). This text is directed primarily at institutional investors, so know this before you buy.

Other subjects are covered such as "loan to own", etc.

A winner.

Extremely helpful in preparing our new hires - it is required reading. This book will be a desk reference for years to come.

It's a must buy for people in high-yield/distressed analysis. I was suggested this book at my first day at work.

Unlike many academic books, this is a practical analysis of distressed debt, the bankruptcy process, and all the related financial, accounting and valuation issues that arise in this context. It is well written and well organized.

Some other books on the topic go into significantly more detail in esoteric issues; however this book is a must for a grounded detailed understanding of the topic. I have recommended this book to a number of colleagues in the industry and all were equally appreciative.
