Success through educationReview Date: 2007-09-24
This book provided the insight I needed to UNDERSTAND the disorder. I truly believe the key to overcoming any inner battle is education. I could not lose weight ("eat less, move more") on sheer willpower or for that fit-into-a-bikini mentality. Now I'm all about longevity, mental health, energy, and etc. Those are the true reasons to eat well and keep moving.
I gave this book to a friend, and now I looking for another copy to keep in my library forever, both for reference when I struggle, and to share with any of my other friends and acquaintances who comment on my new shape and want to know "How did you do it?"

Help me get back on track!Review Date: 2006-06-06
Since that time, I have fallen off of the 'program' and am out of control with my eating again. I have tried WW, but my weight loss was only temporary and i began to binge and gained everything back. I've attempted to get back 'on the Fairburn program' several times, but I'll start keeping track and monitor my food by writing...and then, i'll start to slip and stop writing. The rest of the story goes downhill.
I know success is possible as I proved to myself by not binging for a year that i could gain control over my binging.
I want to re-dedicate myself to this program and I'm looking to gain the support of others who have this book, are just buying it or have been using it with success.

Excellent Overview of a Complicated TopicReview Date: 2007-12-14
If you do have a substantial estate, then this book is a great place to start. If nothing else, it tells you whether or not you need a lawyer. Even if you do, I would still recommend reading this book cover-to-cover, so that you fully understand your estate plan and are aware of the alternatives, as well as of the implications of tax law changes.
It's a shame that laymen have to waste their brainpower worrying about such unnecessary complexity as financial estate planning, but so long as the majority suffer from the delusion that this is an effective means of taxation, we're stuck with it. This book will guide you through the complexity.

A great book to help you learn how to sensibly plan the transfer of your wealth at your death and minimize any estate tax bite!Review Date: 2007-10-09
This is a wonderful book on estate planning that focuses on legal and practical issues. I loved it. As I read through it I did not see any inaccuracies in the law or in the subject matter. I especially enjoyed reading about the different options one has regarding how to leave property to minor children. And it includes a thorough discussion on the ways to save on estate taxes.
This book is written for the nonlawyer. And it is not designed to cover in detail ancillary subjects related to estate planning. It is applicable to all states (except Louisiana) and DC. It will be useful for people with estates of any amount. But because of its comprehensive nature I seriously doubt that people with insignificant estates will want to read it. There are other less comprehensive books those people should read. There is no reason to get overwhelmed about estate planning when there is no need to do so.
This book does not provide prepackaged estate plans to be used as templates for readers. Subjects not covered are elder law, retirement planning, and financial planning. However, I think Chapter 13 concerning Retirement Benefits came pretty close to being a superficial chapter on retirement planning.
I would have liked the book better if chapters 3 and 10 had been combined. And I realize that most estate planning authors include retirement planning and incapacity planning in their books. But I view those subjects as being separate and apart from estate planning and should have been left out of this book. Ergo, I'd get rid of chapters 13 and 26. Maybe they could be the subject of another Nolo book? The coverage of state law exemptions regarding probate seemed out of place to me, too. I don't think the intended audience of this book really cares about that material.
My favorite chapters were 15 to 23. Understanding estate and gift taxes and how to reduce or eliminate them is what estate planning is mostly about. And it was wonderful seeing Chapter 22 (Disclaimers) and Chapter 28 (Small Business Owner issues). These subjects are ignored in most estate planning books.
I thought the author went a little heavy on being anti-Probate throughout the text. Probate has its good points and its bad. I would have liked the book better if the author had just stuck to the facts and not gone overboard giving his slant on the topic. 5 stars!

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building CodesReview Date: 2008-06-05
Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.
It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.
I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.
An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.
The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.
The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.
One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.
It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.
One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

CrimestudentReview Date: 2005-10-22
What most impresses me about the book is that as a fairly new professor, the book is very organized and follows the juvenile system and process in a logical order, including all the necessary details without an overbearing encyclopedia like approach. This helps those just starting out, and I would assume old hats at teaching.
It is obvious the authors' experience in the field of juvenile justice and juvenile law, for they are able to explain sometimes complex subjects with ease and excellent example. The information in the text could be taught in Idaho or Florida, and the lessons about juvenile justice, process, and law are still relevant.
An added bonus is that the extra materials are outstanding. This text includes powerpoint lectures for each chapter. Each powerpoint is detailed and follows the text exactly--unlike other texts which simply do not do this. Perhaps the best part about the extras is the instructor manual and test bank. The questions are outstanding, for they do not overly focus on small and picky details in the text, rather they focus on main points that any professor would teach.
In sum, the best book on the market and I have seen/used many.
A Juvenile Justice PrimerReview Date: 2005-10-13
His most recent effort is Juvenile Justice: The System, Process, and Law, written with Chad R. Trulson, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of North Texas and one of Dr. del Carmen's former students. In this text the authors provide a comprehensive and scholarly overview of the American juvenile justice system.
In addition to providing the reader with a sufficient theoretical and historical foundation, the book, comprised of fourteen chapters, explains in detail the various stages of the juvenile justice system through a rational progression. The chapters cover such topics as: theories and measurements of juvenile offending; the role of police in addressing juvenile crime; intake and diversion; status offenders; dependent and neglected youth; juvenile victimization; the detention process and certification as an adult offender; the national court system; adjudication, disposition, and appeals; juvenile probation and parole; institutional corrections; juveniles and the death penalty; students' rights and school crime; and a look to the future.
Missing from the text - which is a blessing - is the clutter of unnecessary pictures. Rather, the authors have included tables and exhibits that bear a strong relationship with the subject matter. Too, they have included occasional scenarios designed to promote student discussion. Each of the book's chapters begins with an outline and points to be learned, and is concluded with a summary of relevant points, review questions, and a list of key terms and definitions. In addition, relevant websites are provided for further research.
The text contains three appendices relevant to the study of the juvenile justice system. Appendix A provides U. S. Surpeme Court decisions relating to juveniles, and Appendix B lists the location of juvenile laws state by state. The final appendix provides the reader with guidance on accessing and interpreting court cases.
Juvenile Justice: The System, Process, and Law is an excellent undergraduate text. The approach taken by the authors in crafting this book will enhance the learning experience by those who use it. Rolando V. del Carmen and Chad R. Trulson are to be commended for their contribution to criminal justice scholarship.

a good source for a "quick review"Review Date: 2003-12-03
The downside of the book is that the solved problems are not similar to the type of problems one confronts in a typical continuum course. In most cases several problems (statement together with the solution) are presented in a single page, which shows that each problem has been solved in 1-5 lines. I personally don't like most of the problems presented here; however, the problems could be useful for warming up.
A better book is "Introduction to the Mechanics of a Continuous Medium" by Malvern, which is the best I've seen in explaining the intricacies of the theory. Another good complement is Holzapfel's "Nonlinear Solid Mechanics: A Continuum Approach for Engineering", which contains both the theory AND some solved sample problems.

Readable, Informative look at Bill of RightsReview Date: 2007-04-08
Since their adoption in 1791, the Bill of Rights have endured over two centuries of societal and technological change. This is a readable, thought-provoking, and informative look at those ten amendments and their application to life in the USA.

Entertaining and InformativeReview Date: 2003-10-04
The authors admit that their intent was 1) to make people see the Bill of Rights as more than a legal document, but a guideline created by framers who had no idea how different the nation would be centuries later, and 2) to make people think.
For each of the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution, the authors pick a case, usually criminal, and discuss it in relation to the amendment. They choose their cases carefully, and all are thought-provoking.
The Bill of Rights was created to protect the people from the government, and includes several rights delegated to those accused of crimes. However, in one poignant case, the right to confront the witness is used to declare an accused child molester's trial invalid. However, the book also lists many instances in which the Bill of Rights served as the final defense in a couple accused of Communism during the McCarthy era.
While some may find the book boring, because they're not interested in hearing about politics, many would find this book enjoyable to read, especially if they are interested in law.
