The Examples and Explanations series is, in my opinion, a little less helpful than the Siegel's series as the problems in this book are all pretty short and not quite like the long issue-spotters one ordinarily gets on final exams in law school. The upside of these books, however, is that they have summaries of the concepts you should know as well as problems with explanations for every topic. This means that if you don't quite understand one of the concepts you've been taught (tracing via constructive trusts, for example), you can use this book to supplement your lecture notes. I found the book very helpful in studying for my Remedies exam.

It's worth noting that every law school class will cover different topics in different ways, so this book may not cover some of the topics in as much detail as your professor did. I've found that this is always the case with commercial supplements; you just have to understand that your class won't always be exactly like the book, and learn not to panic when you can't answer a question on a subject your prof barely touched on. At the same time, every Remedies class should cover the basics (contract damages, tort damages, injunctions/specific relief, and restitution), all of which were covered in this book.

I teach Remedies. I used to be a fan of Gilbert's law summaries. Now I'm a fan of Examples and Explanations.

Gilbert's has gotten too long, too complex, and does too little summarizing.

No study aid is a substitute for the classroom. However, E & E can help pave the way to better understanding.

I was very surprised when I received my textbook in the mail. Naturally it was packaged professionally however, it was actually better than its description. It was described as being used however, it shows no sign of use; as a matter of fact the binding was still intact. Not only did the book appear brand new, I can not do nothing but jump for joy over the price. I literally paid $50 less than what my school store was selling the textbook for. I was panicking at first because of the price in the school until a friend of mine recommended me checking Amazon.com. I surfed the net found Amazon to be the cheapest at the time of purchase. Thank you Amazon.com.

In my opinion, this is the finest business law textbook on the market. It contains well-edited cases for discussion, cogent analysis of policy and legal history, and easy-to-read flowcharts that help students go through the legal reasoning steps.

It is extremely user friendly to both the lay student and instructor. In addition to the core contract law chapters, it contains chapters summarizing all the main substantive areas of law (and even contains a chapter on the new field of Cyberlaw).

The supporting instructor materials and test bank are excellent. I highly recommend this text. It is well worth the price.

The authors are professors from the Indiana University School of Business, one of the top 5 business schools in the world.

I realize that many of you buying this book won't have a choice about it--it's probably required for a class you are taking and don't much care how good or bad the book it because you need it regardless. However, for those of you who do have a choice:

This textbook has 9 Parts (Intro to law, Contracts, Sales, Agency and Employment, Business Organizations, Property, Commerial Paper, Credit Transactions, Government Regulation) with a total of 48 chapters.

The format of the book, along with the firgures and tables, makes the book easy to read. When applicable, there is a case relating the law described to a real-world situation or a box with ethical considerations and questions. Additionally, the problems at the end of each chapter explore the issues and make students think of both sides of the arguement.

However, in certain areas when describing the law, the text can be vague. The authors could do better making it clear when and how a law is applicable. There are many times when doing the problems where I would look up the case or the issues involved online to get a complete picture.

Overall, a good textbook, especially with supplemental material to be given during lecture.

Knowing nothing about copyright law, this Examples & Explanations was useful in showing me the "bigger picture." The book is divided into four sections: copyrightable subject matter, ownership and transactions, statutory rights, and copyright litigation. It highlights major sources of conflict, like the exceptions to Section 106 rights, but gives only 20 pages to fair use. There is a little coverage of the DMCA and new technologies but not as much as I had hoped for.
Perhaps my biggest criticism is that the book just does not offer what other books in this series have: there are very few case references and there are many more examples than there are pages devoted to explanatory material.
Overall, good for a novice, or someone that missed major portions of class all semester.

As a Texas public school administrator, I highly recommend never spending a moment of your life reading this. There is a much better book called "An Educator's Guide to Texas School Law." If you're a Texas educator, I would buy that book and avoid this one. This is a college text intended for LAW students. I was forced to buy this for a school law class as a part of my administration degree. What a waste of time. It's nothing more than a book full of case law pertaining to public education in the United States. Things your SCHOOL LAWYER should know, but not necessarily you. Your lawyer should summarize and/or you should read a more to-the-point book summarizing it.

Short version: if you're not a LAW student or a LAWYER, this book will do nothing more than bore you to tears.

I got this book for my graduate class on School Law. At first, it was VERY intimidating as it was filled with lots of legal jargon and so on, but the book did a good job of making it fairly "easy" to read. (Though I do admit I've slept on the book a few times...) It is well organized by different sections, and the cases as well as their significance are explained clearly. I liked that it presented very straightforward information, with little slant/bias one way or another, leaving it up to the reader to make up their minds. While I was not required to read the book cover to cover for my class, I have tried to do so because I found the information pertinent and informative. It is a great reference, and definitely a book that I'll keep getting as new editions come out.

I use this when I'm running short on time to prepare for class. It is not a complete substitute for reading the casebook because there are a lot of cases, summaries of cases, and explanations in the notes in the text that are not in the High Court. Also, there was one principle case that was not in the High Court but was in my case book. However, this is very useful all around. I especially like the analysis that comes with each case that tells me how the new rule from the case I just read about fits in with the old rules. Reading this helps me pull the material together. I find I get nearly as much from this 1 to 2 page summary as reading the 20 pages in the text.

This book (called "Chirelstein" at my law school) is absolutely necessary to anyone learning Federal Income Taxation. It will teach you all the basic concepts you are supposed to be learning from all the cases and formulas in your textbook and Code in PLAIN ENGLISH with helpful examples. If you read the applicable sections of this book before reading your assignment, you will always have the answer when called on in class and (I haven't had my final yet) but I suspect it will help you understand more for the all-important final.

If you get a kick out of the legal writers who make no attempt to hide their arrogance (Scalia comes to mind), then you will enjoy reading Professor Marv. You get the feeling that he often wonders to himself what it's like to be stupid.

Even if you don't take to his "burdened genius" persona, it won't prevent you from seeing new ways of looking at concepts in addition what your casebook provides. He wrote this as a "universal supplement," and has taken care to avoid a retread of any of the major texts.

Unlike previous editions, according to the author, this one has a Q & A section at the end of every chapter. They're useful exercises, especially since they have answers and explanations, unlike most casebooks.

This book comes as advertised. It's a clear, succinct, helpful, and occasionally witty introduction to the law of federal income taxation. Chirelstein has a rare talent for making the sometime inscrutable rules of tax law accessible to even the most tax-phobic law student. Particularly useful are his examples (even his charts and numbers are easy and helpful!) and "Loose ends," in which he ties up a particular chapter or subchapter with some point of clarification that makes so much sense you're just sure your professor is going to have something about it on the exam. Which also bears a point of warning: law professors read it too! Beware of using it as your principal text, as, thorough as it is, the book does not cover all the cases and doctrines of tax law. I know firsthand that clever professors can and do write Chirelstein-proof exams.

This book is a useful introduction to some of the principal concepts of the U.S. tax law. I recommend it to law students, young tax lawyers and other professionals that need to develop a good foundation of basic tax law concepts. The framework this title will help you develop will be of great assistance in learning how to think about tax issues and understanding more specialized areas of the law.

Taking Income Tax? Buy this book!

Review Date: 2004-12-07
I strongly, strongly recommend this book for any law student taking an income tax course who has no experience in accounting. I read this book in the beginning of the class- it's relatively short and incredibly readable- and it made the actual class a breeze. Like most law school subjects, it's easy to lose the forest for the trees, and starting off with this book will let you understand how things fit together before you start slogging through- and get lost in- the Code.

As a corollary to that, this book is basically useless as an exam prep; it's too much of a general survey of the topic, and if you're using this to prep for your final you are in deep trouble. However, if you just signed up for tax in the winter term, buy this book and read it over break- it'll take you a day or two, and you'll be glad you did.

Scott Stanberry shows you just how easy it is to contract for the government. Some contractors take one look at the government spec's and throw up their hands. Government spec's aren't as hard as they look. This book will take you step by step through the process of bidding government contracts. Once you get use to the paper work, which this book shows you some of, you have it made. Read this book and go out and make your fortune in government contracting.

Having had several months of government contracting experience prior to reading, I found that this book covers its bases very well, explains all necessary concepts clearly (elaborating where necessary and with precise examples), and solidifies the structural framework of how contracting works. I would definitely not group this book with the "--- for Dummies" books, which are often vague and leave you lingering with questions. Written from the ground up; great as a fundamentals book for the seasoned contractor or as a starting block for those considering/beginning in the field. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Review Date: 2006-01-18
Currently a member of the Federal Acquisition workforce, I see this book covers the gamut, as we know it. Particularly impressive is its coverage of GSA. GSA is a prime Federal market research tool. This can give prospective contractors an idea of what government organizations regularly buy, and government contacts for soliciting business.

As an insider, there does still exist widespread indirect nepotism; cronyism; military who roll into contracts, and other versions of same (so much so that various government bodies such as Government Accounting Office handle contests of unfair play), so the better you know the rules of the game, the better your chances of getting in and getting your fair play of public funds. Government is pro small business; however, you have to slog thru bureaucracy, and that means having the information to even get started and what to do. The driving force is supposed to be acquiring the "best value" for public funds for a requirement. This book can be a map to help you on your journey to propose how you can get the job done. If you know where you want to go, pick up this map, and get the edge to get there.

and I don't play one on TV, either. But I've always had a strong interest in philosophy. I find myself thinking of philosophical issues often, yet I knew very little about it. This book was the perfect introduction!
Often, introdcutions to complex subjects are either dry or too technical to hold the interest of the uninitiated. This book was neither. While introducing a number of key viewpoints, it does it in a way that would hold the interest and educate those with even a passing interest in the subject. It also clearly points the way for future study. I've already purchased a number of the books the author suggests.
From "Does God Exist?" to "The Rational Dentist", author Stephen Law tackles the big philosophical questions asked today. He gives some history on each question, introduces the reader to a few of the philosophers who've written on the subject and then enters into a hypothetical dialog where he explains both sides of the argument. Excellent method, in my humble opinion.
Do I agree with all of his examples? No. Do I agree with all of his conclusions? No! I did read into the book some of what others have said about a bias regarding religion, but it never detracted from the subject. I'm guessing that other reviewers don't like points of view other than their own. When it comes to philosophy (and indeed, as the book points out, any knowledge!), nothing is 'for sure'. Differing points of view are going to be not only the norm, but expected.
I gave the book to my son (who is 23) and he's loving it as well. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Even if it's your only foray into the subject of philosophy, it's a good pick.

This book talks about everything that is important to human beings from a philosophical point of view. I dont think at any time during the book does the author try to impose his thoughts on you ... he is always comparing arguments for and against and that leads to some intelligent writing.

Horribly disappointing.

These manufactured dialogues are evidently Stephen Law's way of dealing with his personal problems with religion.

For example, in one chapter Law manipulates his "teaching" by having God contradict the Bible (the assumption being God's the author) in a dialogue with a conservative religious person. Law even sarcastically concludes the chapter by saying this dialogue is only a dream, the real God would probably respond differently.

Good idea for a book, ruined by the authors distorted logic. There are numerous ad hominen and circular reasoning errors.

The title and premise fooled me into reading it.

Mr. Law, how will you pay back the readers for wasting the time they invested in your philosphical rant against religion?

Everyone should read this book to develop their thought process.

Review Date: 2005-10-18
A book like this one isn't about the conclusions that are reached in its discussions. It is about the thought process used to guide those discussions. We all can use help sharpening our thinking and nothing but good can come of it.

Stephen Law presents 25 interesting and accessible philosophy questions and tackles them primarily in the form of dialogs between two people on opposite sides of the issue. Typically one uses a rational, reasoned approach while the other takes an approach based on a softer footing and is inevitably trumped. Often, Law's conclusions are obvious from the outset, but a few times I found my own beliefs challenged and really had to take a step back and reconsider my own position.

If you are interested in honing your own thinking and like open discussions of topics, you will truly enjoy this book and be a better thinker when you finish it.

Good, but flawed

Review Date: 2006-01-21
This book has very strong merits, but other reviewers have mentioned them so I'm going to concentrate on flaws the flaws (as I see them).

One problem is the occasional factual errors. This makes many sections harder to read because you are constantly having to ignore the author's errors. I'll just give one example: "As I do know that Pluto is a giant gas ball, I know your first hypothesis must be false." (p. 30) This is just sad, where was the editor/fact-checker? I knocked off one star for this.

The other is that some of the arguments have a bit of a straw man feel for the side that the author doesn't favor. I realize this is terribly hard to avoid (and perhaps my perception in this matter is more than a bit subjective), but it left me feeling that the book is not as good as it first appeared (when I bought it on a whim). For this, I knocked off another star.

Again, a book that has many good sections. It just needed a bit more polishing to be a classic.
