You got to have two brains!

You have to have at least two brains to shoot. A cognitive thinking mind and a trigger brain. the trigger brain is much like the lizard brain and just lays there until you're up to your butt in aligators. This is definately a book of 'Brain Food' for both brains that you'll likely turn into a handy referance if you find yourself like me...your trigger brain remembers more than your cognitive brain. Don't be afraid to get them little marker thingies and mark the pages of importance! You won't remember all the ones that helped you!
A well written easy to comprehend book for the most logger head of shooters. If Lou don't tighten your group, take up golf! If he helps, take up shooting golf balls!

This is the type of book that you will never really finish; as you will be constantly referring back to it for training. I read through it cover-to-cover like a novel; now I'm dissecting certain chapters that pertain more to my line of work. A superb manual, packed with information, photos & illustrations. Mr Lau is a true professional. Use this manual in combination with other manuals such as Major Plaster's "The Ultimate Sniper" to gain the most.

Bad grammar but GREAT book!

This book has tons of information. I found typos on practically every page, so the editor needs to be fired, but overall there's so much here and it's written so well that I would highly recommend it. Mike Lau has a friendly writing style, and does not overload the text with technical jargon and $5 words, though there is plenty of technical info in there. Reading it is more like talking to a shooting buddy than reading an engineering manual. There are also tons of pictures, and although I would have gladly paid extra for some to be in color, they are all clear, helpful, and interesting. This is not the end-all, be-all of shooting manuals; rather, it is really one person's knowledge as well as his experienced opinions. For non-fiction, it is quite a page-turner. Mike Lau was a soldier and is still a competitive shooter and is an accomplished custom precision rifle builder. Great book!

I find Rousseau especially creative in the way he describes how inequality progressed from the time the first humans made contact. He makes a good case for the solitary life. I think Rousseau believes it is destructive whenever humans come together in groups. Governments were formed to protect the weaker from the stronger or as Rousseau thinks to actually protect the rich from the poor. This is an outstanding book. It will haunt you.

This is a wonderful example of the 18th century enlightenment. In this work, Rousseau states that inequalities of rank, wealth, and power are the inevitable result of the civilizing process, something most of us have found to be very true if unfair. This new translation also includes all of Rousseau's own notes.

I enjoyed this tremendously, and am always amazed that the thought pattern and process is oneof the few things that hasn't changed over the centuries.

Excellent discourse. This book discusses some of the rudiments of the history of inequality and how its self supporting and ever existing in human nature. I recommend this book for those readers who either want to increase their knowledge on Jean-Jacques Rousseau or historical development of inequality

Man, Animal -- Manimal!

Review Date: 2003-09-18
This essay was Rousseaus's submission to the Academy of Dijon contest, entitled, "Has the progress of the arts and sciences contributed more to the corruption or purification of morals?".

This text is his story about Nature, and Society, and the scandal that happens when people come together, build, divide, dance, sing, and compare themselves with one another. In many ways, it is his answer to the problem of evil.

Natural man is, in many ways, good, because his needs are immediately felt and immediately fulfilled. Social man begins to compete, to hoard, and to use cunning to enslave his fellows, to gain their esteem, take their property, and sometimes their lives.

His picture of the natural man is half what we think of an "animal" and half the "human" that we recognize in ourselves. He shifts his description as the flow of arguement dictates. The habitual provocateur, Rousseau - watch him!

In a way, he is rewriting the Christian "Creation Myth". In his version, evil does not originate at that moment when man eats the fruit of the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" --to "be like God"; it happens when Adam wants a better apple than Eve's got for herself. Before society develops as we know it, Adam would have been fine with just a pear.

I have found the series of "The Glannon Guide To ... " to be the best supplement. I read the case book, as well as this book, and used info from both to create my outline.

I did read and look at other books, including Glannon E&E, but liked this one. I will say that if you read every page of the E&E, you will probably find at least one similar problem on your final, but it is harder to read, more time consuming, and more expensive. I used the same series for Civ Pro (avoiding E&E) and was happy with my grade.

I pulled a C+ on the midterm without reading this book yet, and after reading this and the casebook, and outlining, I ended up with a B in crim law....and thats good enough for me!

I bought this book about two months prior to taking the Sergeants test and read it cover to cover. It is very well written and easy to read. There is a test at the beginning of the book that helps you identify your weak areas so you can concentrate on them. Each section has a test after it to help drive home all the points. Not only did this book help me with the written, but the information inside also helped me prepare for the oral exam.

I ended up ranking #1 in the testing process!!!! If your department uses the state written exam for Sergeant then this book is a MUST! WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD!!!

I'm certainly not qualified to argue the merits of one gunfighting technique over another, but Ayoob is, and makes his case in a clear and logical manner. He isn't afraid to buck tradition, and backs up his arguments with photographs and diagrams that clearly illustrate his point. Best of all, he writes from the position of not only a peace officer, but also a homeowner defending his person and property from an intruder. The emphasis here is on performing under stress, not casual target shooting or plinking, and if you're going to keep a gun in the house you'll need to know this stuff.
This is a "must read" for anyone considering packing heat for personal protection, or even keeping a shotgun beside the bed.

I would have only one piece of advise to the master shooter. If you are going to fire a .357 in the dark, close one eye when you fire your first shot, because you won't be able to see for the second shot. The flash from a .357 wheel gun is immense.

Every shooter should read this book.

Review Date: 2008-04-08
The novel, The Perfect Shot, by Elaine Marie Alphin, is probably the best book I have ever read. It is basically about a teenager named Brian Hammek. He was outside playing basketball, and he watches his girlfriend get murdered. He loves to play basketball. One day he went to court to try to set his girlfriend's father free, he was kicked out of the courtroom and he hid in the bathroom and was threatened by his girlfriend's murderer. After a game he was up in his room when the murderer broke into his house and tried to kill him. He made the perfect shot on the murderer and saved his family's lives. I think the pace of this book was different than you would find in other books. It starts out fast, but then it slows down. In the end it speeds back up again. If you like thrillers, than this is a book you need to read. You never what is going to happened. That is a quick review of The Perfect Shot.

I saw this book in the bookstore and read the inside cover and thought it sounded very good. But I didn't get to read it for a few months, so I let my camp friend borrow it, and when he finished it in a few weeks, he said it was a very great book.

The story is well played out, and the characters are very great. I loved the mystery within it all, and the sadness throughout. This is a wonderful teen book that is quite amazing, and every teen who enjoys sports books or mystery books should buy this, because it's very entertaining.

I can understand things more clearly by relating experiences to experiences of the characters. their lives are magnificently changing and understandable. i would reccomend this book to people who love teen murder mysteries and amazing pieces of writing that touch your heart. this book made me feel, it made me cry, it made me laugh. this book is about life and understanding the situation. the characters' struggles are real and exciting. this book is amazing.
I couldnt put this book down, but at some parts i had to, this story is very intense and that made it all the more lovely.
the murder of one boy's girlfriend turns into a path to life discovery, a path that leads to the meaning of everything. read this book and follow young Brian, go down the path with him. you will discover too.

I read this book based on a student recommendation. What a welcome surprise. This author deserves much more recognition for her talent. I look at and read Young Adult books all the time, but I knew nothing of this book.

The Perfect Shot is a wonderful look at teen life and the struggles human beings go through when dealing with a loss. This book is also an experienced look at the struggles young adults go through when trying to figure out what their place is in this world.

The book does all of the above and accelerates the plot with a suspenseful ending that will leave the reader wanting to read whatever this author produces.

This book is a gem of a Young Adult book. This is a definite must-read.

I am now going to backtrack and read this author's other books, one of which is an Edgar Award winner.

Slow Start, But Worth It!

Like other reviewers, I think this is a great story. There are multiple levels to the plot--a murder mystery, a run at a basketball championship, a school project mirroring real life, a friendship tested. Even with all these elements working together, the story isn't convoluted. The start of the story, though, does drag a bit, especially compared to the fast pace of the rest of the novel. Overall a great read, though--another great one by this author!--and one that boys and girls alike would enjoy.

This book gives great insight into motivation, organization and function of a not-for-profit organization. The fundraising section lacks a thorough understanding of philanthropy and it's role in funding not-for-profits, however, the overall business approach to management can shift an organization to greater success.

A Must for Non-Profit Managers
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-14
This book is a practicle, no-nonsense guide to running a not-for-profit organization. I have been involved in not-for-profit organizations both as an executive director, chairperson, and consultant for over 20 years and still learned a great deal from this book. The writer focuses on 'mission' in the organization but goes much further in relating it to the every day operation and management of the organization including: board fundction, managing people, technology, social entrepreneurship and more. It is a straight forward, practicle, and filled with answers to some of the more complex questions in running a not-for-profit.

The chapter on the role of the board of a not-for-profit was especially helpful. I passed it on to an organizations new chairperson and it helped her in clarifying her role as board chair, and how to bring in and orient new board members.

The book discusses the responsiblity of the not-for-profit to to make money, outlining the fiscal responsiblity of the director and board. It touches on the issue of setting up a profit making arm of a non-profit, and the important, yet complex relationship between the a not-for-profit and government.

This book is a must for new directors and administrators in the not-for-profit world and important reading for those who have been in the not-for-profit world for years. I borowed a copy from a friend and wanted a copy for my own library.
