I really found this book helpful and full of information. I used it for a class that I was taking called family violence and abuse. Wallace does an excellent job outlining indicators of child abuse and he also provides different catergories of abuse such as elder abuse and alternative life style abuse. I often find myself struggling to use books assigned to each class because sometimes they are just not useful. I have spent lots of money on class texts that I have not opened once. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH THIS BOOK. IT WAS VERY USEFUL.

Superb!!!

Harvey Wallace's text book, which is being used in my Seminar:Domestic Violence Course, is a wonderful source of information about all types of domestic abuse. The extensive coverage on the many forms of child abuse is an excellent source of information for all careers, especially social workers, teachers, school psychologists, and future or current parents. I am also very glad to see that Wallace includes Elder Abuse and Gay and Lesbian Abuse in his book, types of domestic violence which often go overlooked.

The book came in great condition, the problem I have was the two week ship time. In turn classes started and I had to go the bookstore to buy another one to do the assignment. USPS should not be an option.

I don't really have anything to compare this book with, but it gave me a pretty good idea of counseling ethics, laws and morality. It's a very good book, it's not written in a complicated learned language, so it's pretty understandable. And it has an ACA Code of Ethics in the appendix.

This is a very practical text for students studying to be counselors. It would also be a broad, practical resource for all counselors when help is needed in addressing questions and issues that will be faced in the counseling profession.

This book plows familiar ground in many places and can be at times confusing or overly technical. On the other hand, the two chapters that address ethical issues on a case by case basis do a wonderful job of identifying an ethical issue, discussing cases and laws that apply and then making a suggestion for that particular instance or example. I plan to use this text to supplement the Corey and Corey text on ethics for an ethics course for MFT's.

I qualified 2 years ago as a Marriage and Family Therapist and I know how vital it is for the therapist to have a firm grasp of the ethical and legal issues involved. And this book is a fine guide. Not being sexist or anything, but you just don't know when some flaky female client is going to misunderstand something you say and slap a harrassment suit on you. 9 times out of ten the husbands don't back you up in those sort of circumstances either so you need something like this book to bail you out. Excellent.

Affirmative Action chapters worth the price of book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-14
In the shadow of the upcoming Supreme Court decision concerning affirmative action, I wanted to do some research on the issue. This books treatment is excellant. There are detailed articles about the Bakke and Hopwood cases. There's a summary of the Harvard's affirmitive action policy which was praised by the Supreme Court in the Bakke case as an excellant policy. An article opposing all civil rights laws followed by an artcile that justifies affirmative action are both thought provoking. There is also an intersting article about various ways to look at equality and fairness in treating your children in different situations.

The upcoming decision in the Michigan case may truly be a watershed opinion on affirmative action at least in university admission cases. Justice Blackmun said it best in the Bakke case: "there is no other way" than affirmative action. We cannot end racism without taking into account race.

A Great Teaching Resource...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-29
"Criminology", co-authored by Leonard Glick and J. Mitchell Miller, is a comprehensive and well-written entry-level guide to the complex and controversial topic of criminology as practiced in the United States. "Criminology" is specifically organized to facilitate the work of the instructor and the student.

Each of fourteen chapters covers basic definitions, theory, and observed behavior for some category of criminal activity and/or the police, judicial, and correctional response. The basic text presents narrative, graphics, and focused text boxes, augmented by excerpts from a variety of authors with more indepth analysis of various problems. Each chapter comes with self-testing questions to reinforce learning. The layout of each chapter easily translates to a classroom presentation.

Presentation for the most part is even-handed, in recognition that criminology does not have perfect analyses or answers for what is very complex human behavior. Multiple theories of criminology are presented without predetermined selection of a single answer. Contrasting arguments for and against incarceration, capital punishment, and punitive sentences for drug-related offenses provide a good basis for further exploration in a classroom or seminar environment. The focus is on the United States, although some anecdotal context is provided for other nations. The text has been updated to include consideration of crimes of recent or renewed emphasis such as international terrorism and human trafficking.

"Criminology" is very highly recommended as a great teaching resource for college entry-level criminology classes.

An International Perspective on Foreign Legal Systems
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-12
"Comparative Criminal Justice Systems: a Topical Approach" is a study of a few foreign legal systems with a political approach and an "international perspective". According to the author, Phil L. Reichel, the goal of his book is to extend the reader's knowledge about other countries, their citizens and their cultures but most important to find ways to improve society; not only at a local but at a global level as well.

In this book, Reichel talks about interesting facts about crime and crime rate around the world. For example, crime statistics may not be accurate due to lack of means to report them-small villages away from the city; same legal system encourages law officials not to make reports, political reason. Reichel also talks about substantive law and procedural law in the four legal traditions.

Learning an international perspective on foreign legal systems is also undoubtedly excellent to better understand and to improve the American Justice System. Although the last chapter of this book was so disappointing to me, I still recommend it.
