This uniquely candid portrait of Chicano men gives the reader an intimate, honest look into their lives. "Vatos" doesn't discriminate -- it shows all aspects of Chicano life to give a full perspective. The most interesting idea here is that Galvez and Urrea worked independently of each other, yet the photographs seem to work with the poem perfectly (and vice-versa). I suggest checking this out. The poem is provocative, with lines like "All the Vatos brave in deadly classrooms," and the black and white photos give a subdued effect.

A unique visual and cognitive experience

Vatos is a joining of the photographs by Jose Galvez and the poetry of Luis Alberto Urrea. The word "vatos" is Chicano street slang for "dude, guy, pal, or brother". The poem comprising the text is Urrea's "Hymn to Vatos Who Will Never Be in a Poem", and is an evocation of Chicano manhood and a shining spotlight on Chicano men who are typically ignored or misrepresented by the surrounding culture, from migrant workers and barrio homeboys to blue-collar husbands and social activists. Jose Galvez's memorable, black-and-white photographs throughout Vatos bring its reverberant poetry to life, creating a unique visual and cognitive experience. Highly recommended.

Luis Alberto Urrea's touching poem could only be matched by Jose Galvez's stirring photographs, pictures that depict both the soft sides and the machismo of Latino men. This makes a wonderful Father's Day gift and is a must-have for the thoughtful coffee table.

Transhistorical Portraits of Chicano Men/Masculinity

Review Date: 2004-08-07
Jose Galvez's "Vatos" presents over 60 photographs of Chicano men that appear to have been taken during the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, the images themselves outlast these historical time frames (which include the advent of the Chicano Movement) considering the multiple and diverse images of cholos, obreros, activistas, businessmen, abuelos and veteranos that prove everlasting in shaping the vision of nuestro pueblo.

Luis Alberto Urrea's "Hymn to Vatos Who Will Never Be In a Poem" is a fitting companion to the photographs. However, the photographs are so intense that they don't require any form of poetic explanation or translation. The eyes of homeboys in the barrio, the dark sunglasses on a tattoed vato in the hood, the abuelo cradling a young muchachita, the obrero overlooking the fence dividing the U.S. and Mexico, the brown brother adorned as Aztec, the young gay Chicanos hanging out in the street--all tell stories about our gente and the men shaping the Chicano/a community.

These images tell us so much about how Chicano masculinity is represented and constructed from what we see out in the streets. These images are reality. There are no stereotypes here. In other words, none of the photographs appear to have been "staged." All the photographs are documents--testimonios. Galvez presents these men in their most brave, most vulnerable, most wounded moments. Indeed, Chicano masculinity is much more complex and varied as you may think it is.

I would recommend this book for those interested in Men's Studies, Chicano/a Studies, and Ethnic Studies.

Ethnic pride

The title "Vatos" and the picture of the homies on the cover are a little deceptive as this book covers many different men in varied situations. There are also farmworkers, mariachis , Aztec dancers, lawyers, men with their mothers and daughters and children in church included but the vast majority are mostly your stereotypical images of hard core dudes or vatos. These are images of strength, of strangers in a strange yet familiar land. The beauty of the strength and yet vulnerability of the young and old men is frozen in time, locked into the moment for future generations. The pride and respect for family tradition, the refusal to assimilate, to stay seperate but within the confines of barrio pride and the cultural pride glow from these beautiful black and white photographs. The words or the poetry accomapanying the images make for a heartfelt experience revealing the deep conviction of Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Jose Galvez and award winning young writer Luis Alberto Urrea. The imagery is touching and gives a glimpse into the ordinary lives of people who have claimed a piece of the American dream through tinted brown glasses, squinting from the shiny veneer of traditonal American life. The vatos portrayed have claimed their own dignity even under undignified conditions. The pictures span decades of time and when you look at them you can't help but speculate about the people in them. When you see a young teenage vato, dressed in typical homie attire, you wonder where he is now and if his chosen path has detoured for the better or worse. Looking at the old men, the lines revealing the years , the paths of experience, the eyes looking at you showing the depth of their experiences , you can't help but feel the time lost. This book is a moving visual experience and a great gift idea. If you look closely into the eyes of the vatos you will see the ghosts of Moctezuma, Morelos, Juarez, Hidalgo and Zapata, shrouded in the flesh of the Huastecs, Olmecs, Maya, Toltecs, Zapotecs and Aztecs, rising from the barrios and fields of Aztlan to live another day.

I'm a Garcia fan.
It seems, that either you're a fan or you are not. And it also seems, that whatever side you're on, you can't convince the other side.
So ..., I'm not going to try that.

Let me just list the lessons I've learned from this book.

Stories sell.
I know this from my profession and I use it every day to sell, but I'm not talking about money here.
It's just that a great story arouses interest.
And we DO have a great story here. In fact, Garcia is a master story teller. He's so good, that almost every paragraph is a little story on its own. And what's even more, Garcia again shows his unique ability to create seamless transitions from one story to another.

Even more astonishing is the way Garcia plays with time.
The books starts at a certain point in his live and then goes back and forth in time without ever disturbing the instinctive 'flow'. He never leaves you guessing where you are in terms of time. Awesome!

I've learned about the personal life of a great writer.
I'm a long-time fan of Garcia. I guess that's one aspect of what makes this book so interesting. You get to know the background and that enables you to place his novels in another perspective: that of the author. Until now his (great) books were just that. This books shows the 'reason why' they were written.

I've learned about a culture and a way of living that was unknown to me.
Funny coincidence was, that I recently met a Columbian professional dancer, who consulted me to establish a new website for his business. To me, reading To Live to Tell better explains the unpredictable character and sometimes behavior of this person. That was a great help.
As I explained this to him, his comment was: "The book describes exactly how we, Columbians, think and act."

Hope this helps.
Still, apart from the lessons I've learned, it's a great book that I wholeheartedly can recommend reading.

In order to enjoy this book, you must be a Garcia Marquez fan or at least have read a few of his other books before. If you pick this book up and are exposed to GGM for the first time though this, his memoirs, you will be bored to death, let alone clueless about what he is writing about.

For us GGM addicts, this book is another stroke of GGM's genius. You'll learn about the though process of the genius who practically invented magic realism.

Garcia Marquez, his first 30 years, in his own words

I have been a fan of Garcia Marquez and his stories since 1980, after I read "Cien Anos de Soledad".
All of his previous books and short stories have been mostly a sample of great stories from a wonderful story teller; in contrast, the flavor this book gives you is one where you feel as if he were telling you, face to face, his early years, from BEFORE he was born to when he was about 30 years old. This volume is the first in a trilogy that will make up his memoirs.
This book will give you a great insight on his background, his family, how he came to invent all the fantastic stories and characters that make up his books.
He began his literary life as a cartoonist and a poet; later, in his late teens he began writing short stories, commentaries and some editorials (mostly anonymously) for different newspapers in Colombia. He sees this period of his life as the one where he came to hone his skills, which eventually -in 1982-brought him the Nobel prize of literature.

This book is not just a narrative of his life; he also gives the reader many insights on the way he approaches a story, the mechanics of it, and what he expects to see in his finished piece.
If you are a fan of Gabo (his nickname)or you are merely a lover of great literature -I see Hemingway as a comparison-, you will love this book and will look forward to Gabo's second volume, sometime in the next two years.

P.S. I read this book three times and each time I noticed different things that I had missed the first time I read it.

Contiene 19 capitulos, ordenado bajo tres secciones principales.

Terapia, refiere a sanidad, a curación, a remediar.

Cuando el Día tiene 36 horas (The 36 Hour Day) by Nancy L. Mace and Peter V. Rabins is an excellent resouce for those trying to cope with tasks of caregiving to people suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease robs hundreds of thousands of people of their ability to remember and process new information. While this disease directly affects individuals, it indirectly affects family members, caregivers, friends, co-workers who are left with the seemingly impossible task of providing support, care, and help to these individuals. Worse still, is the countless hours of waiting and vigilance. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer's Disease. Family members and caregivers suffer knowing that fact and that they are unable to stop its progression. This book provides very useful, practical helps to cope with this type of impotence as well as strategies for dealing with the other numerous aspects of this disease, such as all the financial, legal, medical, psychological and emotional matters that are sure to affect the caregivers much more than the person suffering from this disese. No one knows better than the person who has experienced the affects of Alzheimer's that it is more important to care for oneself if one is going to be an effective caregiver. This wonderful book is the perfect guide to understand how to be effective doing both.

For the English speaker wanting a monolingual dictionary for translation purposes, to find out present day usage, this dictionary is very helpful. I t seems comprehensive, providing 20th cent examples, from an array of authors, of a huge range of words with very nice distinctions. For many purposes it is to be preferred for example to the RAE dictionary, which however records a vast number of archaic uses.I bought it as an adjunct to my other dictionaries (RAE, Maria Moliner and bilingual ones), but have found it to be my preferred source. It is,however, peninsular Spanish.

A good dictionary that could have been better

This dictionary has a broad vocabulary coverage and numerous usage notes as well as regional definitions. One of its weaknesses is, however, that it surprinsingly fails to include several words of widespread use today such "Internet", "Web", and others.

Additionally, and to justify its considerable price, Aguilar (its publisher) should have included the CD version of this title. I do not know if such version exists (Aguilar does not list it among its products) but its apparent unavailability makes this dictionary technologically outdated. Advances in word processing and application software integration, and increasing consumers' technological sophistication make dictionaries in CD format a required product offering if publishers are to meet the demands of new generations of users.

In summary, although I acknowledge Mr. Seco and his team's commendable efforts to develop a quality dictionary, they need to update it to succesfully compete with similar products in the market. As an alternative to Mr. Seco's book, I recommend Maria Moliner's "Diccionario de Uso del Español" 2nd. ed. which comes in print and CD formats; its price, however, is also high, although many consider it worth the investment.

Wonderful dictionary to be read for its own sake

A couple of things should be kept in mind when considering the purchase of this dictionary. First, it is a work that focuses on Spanish as written in Spain. If regionalisms exist, it is because they are Spanish or were found in the source material--books and periodicals (primarily newspapers)--published within that country. Second, the material it references was published between 1955 and 1993.

This is an important work that should be used as much for primary study as for secondary reference. It limits its entries to words in current use. Rather than relying on sample sentences created by its authors, the dictionary cites real published Spanish to illustrate a particular meaning of an entry--similar to the OED, though limited to the second half of the twentieth century.

In as far as comparing this dictionary with others. I don't believe it is competing with any other. No, it does not have the latest terms. I don't think any voluminous dictionary can--particularly where innovation and techology are concerned. But its authority is unassailable. It deserves a place on the same bookshelf as Maria Moliner's Diccionario de Uso del Espanol and Rufino J. Cuervo's Diccionario de construcción y régimen de la lengua castellana.

Moliner's equal to this work? -please!

Maria Moliner's "Diccionario de Uso del Español" is old as can easly be seen reading the definitions employed on the internet by various ppl! No disrespect intended but her book is dated and was rather conservative at the time it was written. Rufino J. Cuervo's Diccionario de construcción y régimen de la lengua castellana was a book started over a century ago which was only published by Gredos editorial within the past decade. This book is 8 volumes and retails for over 400 €! M. Seco's dictionary on the other hand is both recent and the definitions are well worded, clear and concise, while providing all necessary grammatical information and many examples of locutions in a economical but comprehensive manner. This is one of the best dictionaries I've ever used (although I only have the 1 vol. abreviated edition, which is the same by the way except that it's striped of its documentary examples. It retains the great definitions and grammatical infos) Go ahead and buy it, many ppl agree that Manuel Seco's Dictionary is the best Spanish reference currently available.

The citations used for this dictionary are taken almost exclusively from news papers and revistas. (But the preface claims this is a descriptive [as oppoped to pre-] dictionary) The base definitions are very good imo but i feel the dictionary would be much better had the authors constructed there own example. But then the dict couldn't claim to be documented w/ actual usage, which means little given the source. (No offence but do you honestly consider journalists to be great writers worthy of emulation? Really this is nothing more than a CONSEVATIVE PRE-scriptive DICTIONARY, & if the authors claim otherwise they lie. Also this perhaps amongst the worst dictionaries for a learner of castillana.
Go to [http://terminotica.upf.es/etl/es/altres/qbe.htm] where you will find an example page in .gif format. Also the paper used in this dictionary is to thin, to the point when the reading the verso is almost readable from the recto.
*** I highly recommend the Lema dictionary published by Vox. I use it and it's effiency makes it a true joy to consult. Lema's definitions will not lead the learner of castillana to other etries as this dictionary will. Compare them oth on the link above and see for yourself. Hope this review helps.

This book brings tears to my native New Orleanian wife every time she picks it up. It is meant for anyone and everyone who has lived in New Orleans for any length of time. For old or young it brings back poignant memories and fond stories about the city by the river where time has stood still.

Do You Know?

Review Date: 2006-07-23
There are few books that can make you laugh out loud and cry on the same page. In the words of Louis Armstrong, the title simply asks you, "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?" I've never been there, but having read this book I dearly wish I had - it has brought home to me the immeasurable sense of loss felt by its residents in a way that the mainstream media never did, no matter how many panoramic shots of the disaster zone it showed.

The book feels rather like a diary, full of reminiscences on life in New Orleans before, during and after Katrina. Just after the preface, there is a list of census data from 1900 and 2000, along with a map of the city showing where the events in each chapter took place. The publishers have been unafraid to take a different approach to the book's content and diversify the style of its presentation: throughout there are 19th century engravings of the city, recipes for local dishes and the words to turn of the century Creole songs. As well as adding the excitement of never letting you know what you will find on the next page, these lyrical vignettes remind you of the city's history and cultural heritage at a crucial time when what hasn't already been swept away by the storm threatens to be destroyed by the corporate greed of `reconstruction' that will come in its wake.

Above all, this book is about hearing a wide variety of voices telling different stories. It is an incredible feeling to read all their outlandish tales and know they are actually true. On the other hand, in among these recollections there are other true stories that fill you with rage: Barbara Bush praises the fact that all these poor people are suddenly finding a better life as refugees and FEMA's Michael Brown receives an email from his press secretary telling him to roll up the sleeves of his shirt like the President so as to look more hard working.

It is a beautifully made book and a joy to hold, something I truly appreciated when the often shoddy mass production of books has taken away any sense of personal touch. The disaster that brought these writers together for this volume should never have been allowed to happen, and yet I am very happy that this book was published and I strongly recommend it. Having suffered such catastrophic negligence, New Orleans needs this kind of attention to detail.

Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans? is a collection of heartfelt true stories told by survivors, evacuees, and natives of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the lethal city flooding. A handful of black-and-white illustrations grace this collection of brief reminiscences of New Orleans as it once was, the hardship of survival, attempts to return to the city, the hope of rebuilding despite the overwhelming challenges, and much more. A dollop of humor here and there intersperse the at times harsh true stories, in this highly recommended tribute. "The crime and poverty were always there. My garage was invaded three times so I quit locking it. You could not live in the city and avoid the dreary performance of democracy; yet the town was held together by a spiritual essence few cities in this country possess. We were like many families in having those we loved most within a short drive. That infrastructure of the heart is severely fractured now."
