This book was very interesting and a very easy read! I like how the author speaks about God and how God helped her to over come the "evil" that surrounded her. I really enjoyed the book but at times didn't really like the style that it was written in. But either way I did enjoy it! Hope the author puts out another!

Interested in ancient civilizations? Or why the Mayans used large numbers that are normally associated with astrophysics?

If yes to either of these, DON'T buy this book. Quite simply put, this book is about some hippy-type on a spiritual quest, and not a study into the ancients listed in the book's title.

If you've seen the Simpsons episode where Homer attends the local chilli-cook-off, then ends up having to search out his soul mate, you'll already have a pretty good idea about the contents of this book. I jest not!

However, if you spend time on the other side of one of Huxley's doors, you may just get through the book without experiencing the nausea associated with the realisation that you've just wasted a portion of your hard earned.

Trips the Mind

Off-beat, wild, excellent. Takes the mind on a trip. Like a personal history of consciousness opening up. It's about the whole world of spiritual development, said different than by anybody else.

(American) Tantric Dreaming
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-21
If this book were to be classified by its style, it would be "Early American Tantra." Given that current scientific research continues to tie ancient Asia and Central and South America together through the undeniably similar artifacts, archeology, calendar systems and languages, it seems entirely plausible that the Tantric philosophy and practices of Asia would appear in some related form in ancient America as well. Based on the Aztec/Mayan numerology system as first explained factually and then demonstrated in an unapologetically mystical manner by Mr. Montgomery, this philosophy is offered to the reader of this book in a powerful and experiential manner.

That this book, published six years ago, is not better known appears to be the result of two factors. First it is written in a dream-like style that weaves the author's personal narration in and out of spiritual teachings, social commentary, metaphysics, poetry and symbology - hence, the Tantric comparison. Taken altogether, it is a fascinating study of human consciousness, delivered in a dreamlike mandala that becomes visible and evident only after one studies the work and steps back to see it in its altogether - not a "sound bite" popular book. The second reason for this book's lack of emergence apparently is that Mr. Montgomery, seemingly as non-public a personality as his book is non-conforming to popular style, neither speaks nor teaches in a public forum - or so I was told when I contacted the publisher. While that seems too bad on the one hand, it also seems understandable on the other. The best Tantra teachers are not necessarily the most popular TV personalities. In any case, this is a wonderful, complex, challenging writing. Highly recommended for serious students of consciousness.

Amazing Overview of Spiritual Journey

This is an amazing book. First time I read it about four years ago, I kind of liked it but didn't understand most of it. I picked it up again last month, and it's become the most important book in my life. It's the best overview of the spiritual journey that I've run into in many years, using the Mayans' mathematics as a guideline to another realm of being. It also makes the point that all powerful world traditions, including those of the Native Americans, can lead to the truth. Be patient, read it slowly, and this book will speak to you.

An Enjoyable Read

Review Date: 2000-02-01
This book is about the author's quest for a method or framework of spiritual growth, based loosely upon the ancient Mayan mathematical system. The author does not seek to inform the reader of Mayan history, but rather, it reads more like a very personal autobiography. Roger Montgomery is a skilled storyteller and makes the book easy and enjoyable to read. He reveals archetypal spiritual pathways that can be compared to many other religions, though he specifically compares it to Native American spirituality and the Medicine Wheel.

I have just read The Art of Being Psychic by June Elleni Laine and thought it was brilliant. The book explains how our left and right brain are involved in Psychic development, giving loads of insights in to the blocks and doubts we can encounter when developing our psychic ability.
June Elleni gives us tuition from her wealth of experience of teaching others to develop their psychic ability through her Five Step Technique. She explains the importance of Perception,Awareness, Acknowledgement, Validation and Intention.
I really enjoyed the style of this book and the different aspects of pyschic development I discovered through reading it!
The portraits on her web site are amazing http://www.psychicartworks.com/index2.html

course on psychic portraiture

Review Date: 2006-08-05
The first book I read on this interesting subject of psychic art. I tried a few of the exercises that she mentions and they really do work; how to open up the right side of your brain the creative and psychic part. She attended courses on spiritual development and psychic portraiture in a spiritual college in London, England. She relates her experiences of drawing spirits of deceased clients or guides while in an altered state while she was learning to do that and after she started practicing with clients. Instructions are also given of how we can do this. All this material from what I understand is the one she uses in her classes. Very nice book. I wish there was also a dvd available with it it would be very helpful. I hope she makes one in the future.

These researchers document how New Age philosophy infiltrates Christian churches and organizations. This book will open your eyes or it might step on your toes. But don't blindly accept or discount the contentions of the authors. Check out the research references for yourself and then draw your own conclusions. If you are a Texe Marrs fan, then you will want to pick up a copy of Trojan Horse and Samantha Smith's second book, Goddess Earth, which documents ties between New Age philosophy and the environmental movement

authors misunderstand L'Engle
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-12
Anyone who believes Madeleine L'Engle promotes paganism or anything immoral totally misunderstands her work. These authors have twisted facts to promote their OWN agenda, which is unfair to Mrs. L'Engle. Her books reflect her faith and love of Christ. People like the authors of this book want our right to free speech to be revoked. Anything that goes against their interpretation of the Bible makes them very afraid. Their aim is not to spread love (as is Mrs. L'Engle's), but to act in judgment of others. They don't want you to believe like they do because they are concerned for you; they just desparately want you to validate their myopic beliefs. God is the only one who can judge anyone else. The fact that these women wrote a book whose pupose was to condemn another human being because of her writings (which have helped countless people become closer to God) speaks for itself. God doesn't need anyone to police the universe.

An excellent comprehensive practical text

Voodoo and Afro-caribbean Paganism is a thoughtfully organized, comprehensive overview of the African diaspora religions. It is organized by each major division and includes details about the Gods and Goddesses, myths and practices. If you want to know about the Yoruba Goddess Osun, there's a good summary here. If you want to know about the diasporic creation myths, look here. If you want some information on New Orleans Voodoo practices and rituals, it's in here too. Ms. Dorsey has always impressed me when I've had the chance to catch her classes, and here is distilled information on a encyclopedic array of subjects within her speciality. This is an excellent, easy to read, practical summary text including directed texts, films and recordings for further study.

GIVE ME A BREAK!

How surpsising! Yet another book written by a "Pagan" seeing how he/she can degrade other traditions and make them as low as his/her own! If you talk to a follower of Santeria, Vodou or Candomble and call them Pagan...make sure you have your First Aid Kit handy for afterwards!

ALL African derived traditions are monotheistic! There is only ONE GOD in Africa...no matter what you call him! If you think that the Orisha Oshun is a goddess and "equivalent" to the "Vodou Goodess" Freda, then think again! They are indeeed mighty entities, but they are GOD'S EMBASADORS and not gods themselfes...The list why this book su%$s big time goes on and on! If you are truly interested in Afro-Caribbean Traditions, leave your cosy "reading room" and find a good house to study with!

Insightful

What we have here is someone who understands implicitly the commonalities found across the faiths and systems. The Afro-Carribean religions arose from just that, and this work helps explain this most important point.

Excellent book on Shamanism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-04
I found this to be an excellent book on Shamanism as experienced, not a how to book. But even as a book of personal experiences there was a lot of down to earth explanations of just what Shamanism is.

I especially liked the information that we don't choose Shamanism as a path, the Mysteries/Spirits pick us. Like wise we don't choose a power animal, they choose us. I like this as there are too many books out there that lay guilt trips on us that if we aren't able to do this or that somehow we are slacking or are deficient. This is a refreshing change.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.
