Great for upper elementary - beginner middle school

This book is "cute". It forces students to look at arrays of objects and find shortcuts for finding totals. I teach in the middle school grades and have this on my bookshelf for kids looking for something to read during a study hall. Might be a nice supplement to an elementary math program. My two year old son really liked the poems (of course couldn't do the math) and the pictures were really interesting for him to look at.

Great idea

This book is wonderful. Finally there are great books that celebrate math!! This is an awesome book for older children. I'd say at least 1st grade (some Kindergartener would really enjoy it). However, done properly, it's too time consuming for a preschooler. My 3 year old, even though he's very bright, could only hang for 3 pages doing it the right way. After that we just kind of made up our own *way*. Don't be discouraged to buy it, though, because no matter what the age, you can never encourage math enough!!! Great book, great buy!!

The Grapes of Math is a realization for all that math is all around us. An elementary student addresses many situations familiar to everybody that involve math. Her situations and problems are on-going and lead in many different directions, yet all still relative to math. The book is thought provoking and discussion inspiring. The book is most effective in teaching the relevance of mathematics in everyday life through creative riddles. Through its illustrations and imaginative word problems the book creates wonders and fun with every turn of the page for all ages. The Grapes of Math is a big success at motivating kids to see mathematics as a fun necessity.

My son got an excellent math start with this book. Since then, math problems get his attention rather than something to avoid. Now he is the top math student in his class. He often shows up on the Beestar math honor roll (a nice web site for math practice at Beestar.org). I think The Grapes of Math is the cornerstone of his achievement. I highly recommend it.

The Grapes Of Math by Gregory Tang and Harry Briggs has one genre of math problems presented in an amusing fashion with good art. The genre is patterns of objects with breaks in the patterns. The children are expected to look at the patterns as groupings or shapes to figure out the total number of objects without counting one-by-one.

This is a good book. The kids like it. The problems are amusing, even bordering on tickling. My only problem with this book is that an overview of methods for solving the problems should be at the beginning. But so what? There are a few ways to look at the problems and the kids actually sit down to do them without being pestered.

Let me repeat this: after the initial disappointment that I had purchased math books, on their own the kids actually sat down to do the problems without being pestered. If this isn't an endorsement, then what is?

Make math more fun? Check out this one!

First of all, I love the title of this book! When I saw it, I knew inside would be something equally clever and unique. Oh, was I right! This book is a visual and poetic feast, and yet, its focus is not on literature, but math. There are 16 riddles which challenge you to open your mind and solve mathematical problems by using a different way of thinking. Each riddle cleverly gives you some advice on how to solve it. For example, in "One Hump or Two?" you are asked, "Can you add the humps you see? Don't just count them one, two, three...To help you find the right amount, group by fives before you count." If you are really stumped, there is a handy Answer section in the back, complete with diagrams of each page as well as an explanation. The computer-generated illustrations are very visually appealing and the rhyming riddles are catchy. I love the titles too: Know Dice, Win-Doze, For the Birds, and Doggone It! to name a few. What a brilliant concept for a book! This is sure to make math easier to understand, not to mention fun for kids.

I am a nanny working for divorced family. I found the 8-year old reading the book, I was interested so I read the whole book and I was so impressed I got it for my kids too. Not that I am planing on divorce but the kids have so many friends coming from divorced families and this could help them understand situation they are going through. I think the book explains very sensitively whole process of divorce and life after divorce, new partners of parents and step-siblings included. I find the book very needed and helpful. There's plenty of literature for parents going through this hard part of their life and now this is finally something for the little ones. They deserved it.

Read it again

My son was 3 1/2 when I first started to read this book to him, because he started to want to know why his Mommy and Daddy didn't live together, even though it's all he's really ever known since he turned a year old.

This book has a lot of scenarios and you can read the sections that apply to your current situation. I think this book would be better for a child who is 6+.

In one section, the daughter dinasour is trying to figure out her emotions and becomes frustrated. The illustration has puffs of red clouds about her head. My son refers to it as "The red puffy stuff" and is always concerned about the girl and her feelings. It bothers him that she has the "red puffy stuff" about her head.

As we were going through his toys that he wanted to donate, when he came across this book, he looked at it and said, "That puffy stuff is bad" and put it in the "to donate" box.

Even though this book was written by a man and a woman, I felt that some of the scenarios leaned on the mother, as being the "bad guy", or trying to buy-off the kids too much.

Bought this book for my 5 year old granddaughter who is really into Dinosaurs. She was thrilled with it.

Since opening it, she wants to look at it every day. It's been 2 weeks now and she is still enjoying it.

At first glance, you may not notice all the "small pockets" on each page which also pop-up to reveal even more 3D pictures.

Overall, a great purchase and I would highly recommend it.

In selecting this book for a young boy who simply adores anything dinosaur, I felt it was something he would really like. I underestimated his reaction. He was simply thrilled and he especially liked the several smaller pop-ups located in each page's corners. It was defintiely a winner as far as he was concerned.

Practice books for summer study are great, but without an answer guide, this well constructed book has dubious value. Several exercises provoked disagreement between three college educated teachers who reviewed the book with me as to the best possible answer. There not even a web citation of where teachers can procure answers.

Great Idea, but not complete

Vocabulary Power Plus is a great idea, but the book is not complete. There's no answer key for those ambiguous SAT skills passages! How do you know if your answer is correct? I like the connection to the SAT, but it would be nice to have more basic practice with the new word: sentence completion, true-false,and matching.

This book is currently banned in Australia and New Zealand. It has not been in the past and, hopefully, it will resume availability status in the not too distant future. One should be able to determine in this advanced historical part of history, particularly at mature age, to be able to buy and read whatever is relevant to them. Censorship goes too far in this instance. Ignorance is not necessarily bliss! For those that seek answers, this may answer some very important questions for them.

I am only in my 30's and not ready to leave this place just yet(if I can help it). Knowing that I have this book is such peace of mind for me and my boyfriend because should anything happen I want to control MY outcome. The book gives you alternatives on how to end it and gives you the information you need to be able to make sure you don't make mistakes. This is much better than trying something and have it go horribly wrong.

This is the only book of its kind that I've read that is so thoroughly researched. It's a pretty comprehensive study of the various ways there are to end one's life. And each method is rated in many categories including effectiveness, ease of obtaining the required materials, painlessness, etc. Near the end of the book there is a good description of how to obtain the best drug (in Mexico) and includes very helpful pictures of the products. I can seriously see cutting the pictures out and showing them to a clerk in Mexico who might otherwise not be able to figure out what I was looking for (because of language difficulties). However, you pay a stiff price to get this information in paperback form ($35.),there is a lot of scientific "padding" to fill out the pages and that is why I gave it four stars instead of five. However, it is the only game in town at this time as far as I know so I'm glad that I have it in my library in spite of the high cost.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about this man who has had so little written about him. The book is merely copies of Mr. Martins daily blogs and each entry is very similar to the one before. You can easily find all this information on line and if you read one or two of his columns you have heard it all. It is not worth the price. I was very disappointed. And to make it worse it is poorly edited with lots of typos. I found it very unprofessional and boring.

Well, at least 2 negative reviews are seemingly coming from the Campaign Operatives or some hard core supporters of Mr. Obama.
It is truly funny how much American Left resembles Stalinist Russia.
They are ready to pound on anyone who disagrees with their position... especially when the opposition states the truth. Sometimes I wonder if they realize it.

As for the book, one must read and make up his/her own mind.
I think it is OK and in the absence of information, it is an important book to read now - before the elections that is.

Andy Martin is very probably the most attention-hungry, limelight-seeking, overly litigious, blog-prolific trolls of recent political history. The man has 'made a name' for himself by trying to sue everyone and their brother with cases that are thrown out of court because of their spectacularly specious and ridiculous claims. Speaking of claims, did you know:

- Andy Martin has 40 year of experience IN the Middle East? He also claims to have 40 years of concurrent experience in Chicago politics. Which is it?

- Andy is 'regarded overseas as America's most respected independent foreign policy, military and intelligence analyst'. His words. Most respected by whom? He doesn't say.

- Andy was Baghdad Bureau Chief in 2003. For whom? A franchised, local internet news service that he signed up for, [...]. Don't bother, they're not around anymore.

- Andy's previous book on Barack Obama... oh, wait. He keeps talking about it but never gives us the title.

- Did you know that Andy's 'legendary'? Just read his press releases.

- Andy claimed, before his book had gone from publisher to warehouse, that it was 'the de facto guide to defeat Barack Obama' - a 'bestseller', in fact. Check out his publisher, [...] - new books? not so much. Just Andy's latest sales pitch.

- And just for fun: "The Illinois Supreme Court, however, refused to admit him to the bar, pointing to a military psychiatric exam that allegedly found him to have personality defects that include delusions involving both paranoia and grandeur."

But go ahead, buy the book. Let Andy enlighten you.

I read Obama: The Man Behind The Mask, by Andy MARTIN, who is "generally recognized as the founding father of the anti-Obama research and commentary movement on the Internet." While those are his words, they are accurate. I too have been tracking Obama since he ran for the US Senate against Allen KEYES. If you think he is siding with the Republicans, you must have forgotten that Andy urged Hillary to TAKE IT TO THE CONVENTION! She did not heed his advice but rolled over and took one, "for the party." Big mistake -- she would have beat John McCAIN as the Presidential Candidate or as the Vice- Presidential candidate.

While the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune were asleep at the wheel, Andy MARTIN was letting the world know "Who Barry O is," but "just the facts" as Detective Friday says. Andy tells you why, until Lynn SWEET caught OBAMA's scent that "Tony's guy" got a pass for all his "Chicago ways."

What does Andy know about "Chicago ways? "He began by exposing corruption in state government while still a law student at the University of Illinois over forty years ago. While still a student he also helped pursue and expose scandal at the Illinois Supreme Court. His investigations of crooked Cook County (Chicago) judges helped trigger federal prosecutions and sent guilty judges to jail."

This book is not a biography. It is OBAMA's anti-biography, it is not OBAMA's fiction "Dreams Of My Father."

If you have followed Andy for the last four years there are no surprises for you in this book but it is still useful as a resource for when those suffering from OBAMAMANIA and in need a dose of reality. It also puts all of Andy's research in one source. It sure beat having to do a search each time you need to "check your facts."

Andy was one of the first to deal with the issue of "Is OBAMA a radical Muslim?" If you do not know the answer then perhaps you did not read what Andy said. The fact remains that Obama was raised as a Muslim until 10 years old. As an adult he reportedly made a commitment to Christianity. Personally I am more concerned with that church's philosophy where, for the last 20 years, Obama reports attendance.

You may want to know that neither of the OBAMA's has a valid license to practice law. How could that happen to such "great lawyers" as they claim to have been? Did they really reject "high salaried" positions and positions offered by those they knew - cronyism? These are just some of the questions Andy answers. In her 25 August 08 speech to the Democratic Convention, Michelle claims they left behind a lucrative law practice to work in public service.

"And in my own life, in my own small way, I've tried to give back to this country that has given me so much. That's why I left a job at a law firm for a career in public service, working to empower young people to volunteer in their communities.

She failed to mention that she was paid quite handsomely (her annual salary increased from [...]) to be a Vice President at University of Chicago Hospital. [...]

Art Williams read the book and gave it 5 stars. R. Howard did not read it, but some how knows it is all a lie and smells like garbage. r howard's opinion may be what smells. People that have that much hatred, are worth FIVE, five-star votes. r howard you make the book smell sweet. I want to buy it. Thank you.

A book I bought and recommend is A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win pages 26-76, 85-119 were great. Looked at it the day it came. I could not put it down. Read it cover to cover then I put it down. He is warm and understanding, his background is very similar. It felt like I was listening to the wise brother of Obama. He walks in shoes as a man that is half black. He is sympathetic but does not agree with him at all. He is very convincing that Obama the politician is not a good choice for anyone of any race. Thank you Mr. Shelby Steele.

I purchased two of these books for my two 3 yr. old boys. They have really enjoyed them. We do about one project a day most days from this and several pages of My First Book Of Tracing (Kumon Workbooks) for their "homework" The first few days were kinda crazy and one of them actually cut the palm of my hand. They just wanted to cut whatever (and draw wherever on the other book) I thought these were a horrible idea until the third day. Both of them seemed to finally understand what was going on and settled down. Now they look forward to it. We made rockets today and they "flew" them all over the house! I also now have a rule that after we do our work properly, we can cut other paper however we want. That has been very successful. In regards to the actual workbook - the paper quality is very high which makes holding the paper easier. It doesn't flop around. It is also shiny and slick so you can tape and remove tape with out damaging the picture. The colors are bright and very appealing to my children. I am very happy with this product.

Arrived yesterday and my son has taken over the box. (He's 8). We are going to get started together. I like the descriptions of the breathing and how you should 'feel' when you do the movements/relaxing poses.
Since I'm taking a yoga class (i'm a newb) and he's going by the names on the cards, it's a bit confusing when he says, I can do the 'turtle' or I can do the 'rainbow.' But for him I find I like 'rainbow' as opposed to 'corpse pose.'
Also, the cards are not the size of a 'deck' of cards. They are larger, more the size of a DVD case. The box is sturdy thick cardboard and has a nice flip top. I'm thinking it will help us take care of them properly.
He did go thru each card and at the end has decided he wants the book and the pretzel mat. (Way to go for the marketing plan!!)

These don't seem too 'baby' for someone his age and I think that up to 9, maybe pushing 10 could use them also.

Completely satisfied.

Great bonding tool that's fun & healthy

As an OT I work with children with tremendous difficulty motor planning new movements; and because of the steps presented visually, my kids do really well figuring out how to do these poses with more independence. It is a wonderful product. BUY IT and have fun!

What I like most about these is that they are color coded for different kinds of poses and activities. I like the flexibility of mixing up the poses or focusing on one kind, rather than using a book that sets the sequence. The only thing I don't like about this and some other kids yoga products is that the names of poses are changed to make them more kid friendly. Since there's no consistency between products, one will call child's pose, for example, "sleeping mouse," and another will call it "rock." But overall, I highly recommend these cards.

I Never Tire of Reading This Book

Of all the books I received as baby gifts, this book has had the longest lifespan. It was my daughter's favorite book as soon as she was old enough to turn regular pages, and almost a year later, it still is. Unlike shorter board books which become very repetitive, this book still has poems that seem "fresh" to me. Everytime we read it's a different experience, depending how many pages we turn at a time. It can be a short book or a long book, depending on the day. The illustrations are incredibly detailed. Even after what seems like a thousand reads, I'm finding clever twists and recognizing characters from elsewhere in the book. This book is a classic and offers lots of bang for your buck.

Nice illustrations but the rhymes fall a little short

The illustrations for the rhymes are all of cats and other animals as stand in for humans and are very cute. As for the rhymes, there are not many of them and some are truncated.

A family favorite!

When my kids were small, I went into a "Mother Goose" kick. I bought and checked out from the Library every Mother Goose I could find, we read them all, and THIS was by far our favorite. The selection of poems was varied, with old favorites and new poems I'd never heard from my childhood as well. The illustrations are beautiful and very fun, Rosemary Wells knows just how kids minds work!

Not quite what I'd imagined

This is a very good book, but it's not quite what I'd imagined. Most of the rhymes were not familiar to me. The illustrations are beautiful, though, and it's fun to read. We enjoy it, but if I had seen it before buying, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

My very favorite Mother Goose book

Publisher's Weekly called this book "exuberant" and that's exactly the right word for it. Bright primary colors make up this book, and Rosemary Wells' adorable characters populate the rhymes. Unlike some Mother Goose books, this one is meaty -- it boasts 108 pages, with a rhyme on almost every page. That's a lot of nights of Mother Goose at bedtime.

Nursery rhymes help build phonological awareness, an important pre-reading skill. Research has actually shown that children who memorize nursery rhymes go on to become better readers than those who do not.

This book makes a great baby gift, and a terrific birthday or holiday gift for a toddler or preschooler. It's the one I grab first when I recommend nursery rhymes to library visitors.
