I would highly recommend any of the books in this series by Cheri Meiners. This book has been especially helpful as my 5-year-old sometimes encounters children who *don't* share well or want to take turns. These books caught my eye because the writing level is just right for pre-K and kindergarten children. Truthful without being preachy or overly wordy, the series shows children and family members from many different ethnic groups in the colorful illustrations, and each book addresses issues which are developmentally critical to this particular age group: sharing, taking turns, being afraid, listening, respecting others, helping out at home, etc. These books have given us a starting point to discuss problems at school or interacting with others, and have helped my son to have more empathy for his peers....I am hopeful that this quality will serve him well as he continues on to kindergarten and elementary school. It is exciting to hear him use ideas from this series to problem solve.

My son loves Star Wars, hates to read. This series has been great for him. Of course, I've learned all about being a Jedi, the different Star Wars planes, etc while he has been reading to me, but anything that has him coming to me and asking to read is worth it and gets 4-5 stars in my book.

The release of Star Wars books for young people has always been related to a theatrical promotion. In a world that has a seen all six films, a new wave of DK Readers is much appreciated. It gives us comfort that even though the movies are finished, the Star Wars experience isn't completely 'done.' As the title suggests, "I Want To Be A Jedi" is a look into the Jedi Order. Jedi training, powers, lighsabers, the Council, mind tricks and equipment are all described. Beyond discussing the Jedi way in broad terms, focus is placed on Anakin Skywalker. "I Want To Be A Jedi" looks at Anakin's relationship with the Order, Padmé Amidala and Darth Sidious. A discussion of the Jedi and Anakin would be incomplete without mentioning the Sith. Darth Sidious, General Grievous and the Clone Wars are connected to the demise of the Jedi Order. While the content is suspiciously similar to "I Am a Jedi" and "I Am a Jedi Apprentice," the scope is more satisfying since it pulls together all six chapters of the saga. So while there's nothing new here, this is a great read for young fans that are still making the connections between the six acts. A glossary and index is included. In terms of the illustrations, the vast majority were lifted from the films. While the pictures are high quality, the writing is also good. This new series has books for most levels of elementary readers. Given the 48 page length and vocabulary level, this title is best suited to readers on a fourth or fifth grade level. "I Want To Be A Jedi" offers an exciting look at the Jedi Order.

I planned to give this book as a gift, so "new condition" was important. When I received it, it did look perfect. Then I opened the front cover. On the inside page was a big inscription "Happy Chanukah from Grandpa Vic"...to my family" etc. That rendered it unusable for my use...and not mentioned in the pre-purchase information.
I ended up giving my own copy, which truly was in new condition, and keeping the inscripted version for myself.

We have borrowed this book several times from the library and I am ordering my own copy today. This has become one of my three year old's favorite bedtime books. Some of the poems are too long for her, and there are many I have to explain to her as we read. I'm buying the book because I anticipate that it is complex and interesting enough to hold her attention for some years to come. This book has a great selection of poetry and beautiful illustrations. I anticipate purchasing several copies in the future as gifts for friends and family.

This book has a lot of good information about how math concepts were discovered over time by Archmedes. Some of the concepts are involved, but it is written at a level that allows young children (8 yrs and up) to access the ideas. The text could easily be used to branch off to classroom/home study science or math explorations. An excellent introduction to the possible depths of mathematics/science study in a light manner that children will find engaging.

EVERYTHING that Archimedes is supposed to have "discovered" already existed in Africa, thousands of years before "WHITE" Greeks existed. The Ancient Egyptians "THE MASTER BUILDERS" had already discovered "ALL" of the Arts & Sciences. The Greeks & Romans were students of the Ancient Black Egyptians, before they destroyed the Egyptian Civilization by raping the women, killing the Priests, forbidding the speaking of the language & burning the Library of Alexandria. Ask yourself this question, if the Greeks were such Great Mathematicians why did they go all the way to Africa to set up this Library, and where are their Pyramids? Huh?
Africa & Africans were the fountainhead of knowledge, at a time when the Whites had recently emerged from the Caves of & Hillsides of Europe, where they were walking on all fours and eating their meat raw, not having the knowledge of fire. Go back and read the ancient historical accounts by Herodotus, where he describes not only the Scientific Wonders of the Ancient Egyptians, but also describes their race as being of "Burnt Skin & Woolly Hair, & that they describe themselves as "THE" Most Ancient of Peoples.
WHY ARE THERE NO ANCIENT RUINS IN WHITE CIVILIZATIONS BUILT BY WHITE PEOPLES? (Stonehenge and other monuments in Europe were built by Blacks who peopled what is called Europe millions of years before the first Whites arrived. Google "Grimaldi Negro", the first inhabitants of Europe. Also see "The Making of the White Man" by Paul Guthrie & "Black Spark, White Fire".
THIS IS THE SAME TYPE OF RACIST LOGIC THAT POSITS THAT CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DISCOVERED AMERICA, WHEN EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT BOTH INDIANS & BLACKS WERE HERE FIRST, BUILDING PYRAMID CIVILIZATIONS.
For further edification read: "The African Origin of Civilization" by Cheik Anta Diop (Renowned Senegalese Physicist & Linguist), "Stolen Legacy" by George M. James (Greek Scholar) & "Black Athena" by Martin Bernal (which shows that Early Greece was peopled by two successive waves of African colonization who laid the foundation of both Minoan & Greek Civilization. Take a close look at the Minoans, they are of African stock, as were the early Greeks prior to the invasions of the Barbaric White Dorians, who brought no Civilizing influence to Greece.
Racist White historical analysis cannot replace cold hard facts such as the Pyramid Civilizations appearing only in Black Civilizations such as Egypt, Mexico etc. The Pyramid culture in the Americas begins with the Thick Lipped, Broad Nosed, Wooly Haired Olmec Civilization, "THE MOTHER CIVILIZATION" of the Americas.
FURTHERMORE, WHOSE TO SAY THAT ARCHIMEDES WAS WHITE, AS GREEK CIVILIZATION AT THAT TIME, HAD BLACKS AS WELL AS WHITES.
Truth crushed to Earth will Rise Again!!!

My 12 year old and then my wife have read this nifty little book before I got to read the father's day present. I generally like less-than-one-hour biographies with pictures, particularly of inventors.
Great book for readers at 4th grade level and above.
For adults, if you admit to liking cliff notes, I would recommend this book on Archimedes first, before buying something more scholarly.

This book is about Archimedes' life. He found out how to measure a circle and the principle of buoyancy. He invented the Archimedes' screw. He moved a ship full of cargo with one hand and a machine he built. And he did all this without electricity. I think that you will love this book.

Placing scientific theory in historical context is a concept that sounds dreadful. My children loved it. They adore the comic stories of Archimedes. My eight year-old son couldn't put it down. As a parent of a boy to 'hates to read,' it was AMAZING to hear my son giggling and laughing out loud while studying history and science on his own. What was even more thrilling, was listening to him apply the knowledge to everything from playing with Knex to a catapult.

I bought this because one of my regular charges is 4 and loves to draw. We can spend 6 hours on a plane with nothing but crayons and blank drawing paper! I wasn't even sure what this book was about but if it had Charlie and Lola in it, I figured it had to be good!
It is basically a story and coloring book and Lola leaves blank spots and asks the little artist to help her complete the picture. Plenty of room for looking at pictures, studying how they are done and still room for their own creativity. I can see right now I shall have to order more!
Lola and Charlie are among my favorites as a traveling nanny. I put them in my nanny bag and children like them so much I must often buy another copy as I have left them with the children!
The books have a gentle way of covering values and Charlie is the ideal model of a big brother. I have even used him as an example with a bossy older sibling with "I wonder how Charlie would have handled this?"!
The DVDs are great, making the stories come to life. No fancy graphics, no intricate or soupy sweet over dramatizing here! Just a simple story line with that great little "english" accent we all try to imitate later!
As always Amazon ships quickly and efficiently!

... "On June 4, 1960, the Big Creek Missile Agency, fresh from its medal winning performance at the National Science Fair, is sponsoring a day of rocket launches at its Cape Coalwood range. Everyone reading these words is invited..." This quote can be found on page 356-357 of a book called Rocket Boys; this statement showed me that the success of the main characters was a result of personal hard work and teamwork.
"Rocket Boys" by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. is a nonfiction account of a group of friends from Coalwood, West Virginia in the early 1960's who have a fetish for making rockets. Homer and his friends have a dream to shoot a rocket up into the clouds. This story gives the reader a message that dreams really can come true.
Rocket Boys is one of the strongest books I have ever read. The author accomplished his goals to tell people that team work is one of the most important things to know in your life. This book is recommended for people that like space and rockets and who want a hopeful book to read. Reading Rocket Boys really gets you thinking about team work and how far you can get with it.

I bought 24 copies of this book to inspire my advanced 6th grade Reading class. They loved the book. In our discussions they mentioned never giving up. Homer and his friends kept trying until they had success.
Thank you for sharing your life with us, Mr. Hickam.

I bought 24 copies of this book to inspire my advanced 6th grade Reading class. They loved the book. In our discussions they mentioned never giving up. Homer and his friends kept trying until they had success.

I purchased this book just for the extra cutaways! I had a few of the others, but this one was worth it to me as I am a fan of the first set of films and characters and this book had more ships from ROTJ that were unavailable before. Really cool and to me, completely worth it. They added the A-Wing and the B-wing among others. forget the individual books, just get this one, especially if you are a fan of the original films designs.

It took less than the time predicted to the "land downunder" and my son and I haven't been able to put this book down. I'm in awe of the service and price, well done amazon.

This is a great purchase just for the artwork and technical information, even for a casual Star Wars fan like myself. I found the Prequel sections to be far more interesting and informative, though. I'd recommend this for anyone who likes sci-fi tech.
I was disappointed however, in the lack of a few key ships and a station. I was really looking forward to getting a look at the inner workings of the Executor and Bespin, as well as the Bespin escort ships. I feel like the Executor in particular is a pretty glaring omission.
But overall, highly recommended.

My 2-1/2 yr old daughter really enjoys her Kumon workbooks. She calls them "homework", and she has several workbooks: mazes, tracing, coloring - they are all great.
more simple fun for preschoolers

The ideas are so simple, but my son loves the colorful pictures and the end results. They are a treat for him and he looks forward to his "school work."
Not interesting enough for wee folks

My three year old was just not interested in folding paper. I would recommend the Let's Sticker! or Let's Cut Paper! over this one.
great start

my boys love the folding book - it's basic (and i mean BASIC) origami. but since they're not yet 2, they have a while before they can get through the book as the designs become progressively more intricate. very entertaining.
Highly recommend

I have a preschooler with fine motor delays and he HATES to do anything which requires use of his hands. I was told by his teachers that this will lead to issues in school when he is expected to write and participate in art projects. If he can't write, it will affect his academic future.
Therapy provided only so much help, as he was frustrated with the tasks. But then I learned about Kumon's excellent reputation for learning through their local tutoring center - I purchased all of the workbooks.
Because of my childs delays, this book was actually the most difficult for him. He doesn't understand how to fold paper in an orderly way. What helped was the folding lines he could see on the illustrations. He truly tried to fold it correctly so he could "see the boy cry, and then see him happy". It's a simple concept, but it's meant to develop skills while keeping the child interested.
If it's not fun or interesting to a child, they won't want to do it. Folding paper for a young child helps to develop fine motor skills, that will help them in all areas when they begin to write, button, zip etc.
My child is getting a lot of exposure to fine motor tasks with these workbooks, but is still having fun with them.

If this book had been pure fiction I would say it was filled with charming and quirky characters, a la Anne Tyler. As it is billed as non-fiction, I will say that it takes a different view of the players.
I have been to Venice only once and fell in love with the city. This book reminds me of the city, quiet, winding, much more under the surface than it appears.
I enjoyed this book so much I was sad when it finished it.

A friend gave this book to me as I was headed off to Venice for vacation. I had no expectations regarding the kind of story, but I did expect a great story given the author and topic. However, I was disappointed. It almost felt like a Vanity Fair article, or one long gossip column. Even so, I did persevere and finish the book because the redeeming qualities were that of the details. Venice is indeed a unique and enchanting city. So I enjoyed learning about some of the areas and buildings and the ins and outs of the people while reading the book. I do believe it had an impact on my impression of the city. So for that, I was pleased. But if you are expecting a good mystery, or a coherent plot line at best, don't; it's not that kind of book at all.
A must read

I have had to buy a new book as the original one was so tatty from being passed on and re-read. It is essential reading if you have never visited Venice and are planning to do so. Thoroughly entertaining, too.

Follows the pattern of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil but with a very different setting. 'Un-put-downable' is an overused phrase but it certainly applies to this book. As a frequent visitor to Venice, I found the descriptions very evocative, and the characters would not be out of place in a Donna Leon story.
Where next for John Berendt?........hopefully Sydney.

While I was a little disappointed with "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," I still wanted to see what John Berendt's next book would be like. I wasn't disappointed. "The City of Falling Angels" gives a wonderful insight to the lives of the allusive residents of Venice with a well-told story from an insider's (Berendt's) view. While I had a hard time keeping track of the characters in "Midnight," I was able to follow along "The City of Falling Angels" without any problems, possibly due to the uniqueness and memorability of each character. Thanks to Berendt's glossary at the back of the book, he is able to tell the story of the Fenice Opera House with an authenticity that would not be possible unless the reader either knew Italian, or had access to a translator.
