This series is excellent. Instead of dwelling on parts of speech, the core of this book is sentence structure: clauses, phrases, conjunctions, etc. Some sections also focus on essay writing and the like, but its most valuable sections help students to better understand the layout of sentences so as to build their own toolbox of tactics to create sentence variety and paragraph coherence. Excercises are sufficiently difficult and not watered down.

If you have a young girl in your family circle, I urge you to give her a copy of Real Beauty: 101 Ways to Feel Great About You (American Girl Library.) I promise you that the benefits will be of lifelong value! If more girls had this sense of self-worth, we would have fewer eating disorders, schoolyard bullying, distorted body images, and other issues that plague the lives of teens -- and adults.
Simply put, this book is worth its weight in gold.

Whenever I feel bad about myself, hating myself, etc, I pick up this book and start reading it. Then I feel good about myself. Of course, though, I don't really need braces yet but I will when I'm 12! The book gives you lots of information on how to eat healthy, exercise, and if you are maybe 10-15, it tells you what to put in your back pack if you get pimples, your period starts, etc. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! P.S I am ten years old.

I recently taught ESL in China for a few weeks and found this book incredibly useful. Although marketed as being for grades 1-4, I found this book helpful for even high school students--it depends more on the level of language proficiency than anything else. For example, I used the "parts of the body" page to review what my students already knew, and then they filled in more complicated words such as thigh, shoulder, ankle, etc. The money page has very realistic drawings of the various coins, all of which were new to my students. The food pages were very helpful before moving on to more complicated lessons on ordering in a restaurant. A great book for a modest price!

I teach English to children in France and this book has very little content geared for my needs and not worth the $12 I spent. I love to teach with mini-books that I create myself, so I was drawn to the title. However, I found the ones offered here very dull, i.e. copying number words, rather than engaging their creativity by having them illustrate the number word. Other mini-books teach the Pledge of Allegiance, This Land is Your Land, and writing the alphabet - also not appropriate for my needs. But as someone who is always looking for appropriate clip art for my lessons, I agree with the other reviewers that the illustrations are appealing and helpful for teaching basic vocabulary, and can be used in many ways.

As a teacher of young learners, I struggle to find resources that truly meet the needs of my students, most of whom are just beginning to read and write in English. This book, however, has proven to be a goldmine. Kids and parents alike love the make-and-take books, while I love the flexibility of each unit. I've used the simple drawings to make charts, flashcards, games, etc. to accompany thematic units and have even used a few of the worksheets to review basic concepts with older kids. I'm giving the book a four instead of a five because the unit topics are quite basic. Once students know colors, numbers, letters, shapes, body parts, basic food items, and basic school terminology, this book basically goes back on the shelf until you get your next room full of beginners. But if you teach young learners with limited language skills, this book is a must have.

This book is easy to read, with short chapters and filled with a ton of information. It also includes a lot of fun facts that everyone will enjoy about different presidents, their wives and some of our more interesting elections. I started using "Handwriting Without Tears: Letters and Numbers for Me" when my left-handed daughter was 4 years old. I appreciated the little memory aids to help us work on correct letter formation together. (To make a lower case t, start at the top, slide down, bump against the line, then cross it.) She tends to reverse letters, perhaps because she is a lefty, so the "Where Do You Start Your Letters?" song and use of the starting corner help her remember how to write them correctly.

My child has been exposed to this product in school. The letters and numbers are not standard. They are not the proper size and shape. There is no reason to start children out teaching them a non-standard font. This is confusing for our child and at some point, some teacher is going to tell them they are making the letters incorrectly. The uppercase Y is just plain wrong. Other letters are half the normal width - examples - B, D. Some look huge in comparison with the rest - examples - K, H. The number 2 and 6 are misshapen. Children should be taught the correct and standard methods from the beginning. This program is irresponsible.

I purchased this book in preparation for raising some guinea keets I received from a friend. As a gardener, I was particularly interested in their function as an "organic insecticide".
The information was sufficient, but not well-written or proof-read, more like a newspaper article. Not enough focus on the gardening aspect, other than that they like certain bugs that harm flowers and veggies. The taming process described is impossible to achieve if you have other things to do than playing with the birds. It is not necessary to keep them caged in the chicken coop for 6 weeks - mine are roaming the chicken yard at 6 weeks old with a bantam hen that adopted them. They stick very close to the coop.
All the information presented can be found on the internet without having to shell out almost 15 bucks.

It all started with ducks, actually. Or maybe bugs. I hate June bugs all over my vegetable garden, and I'm not overly fond of other bugs, either. A place near where I work has all kinds of ducks wandering around, and I thought I'd borrow one to eat the June bugs. Then I remembered guineas. When I threw the idea out there, I thought my boyfriend would just ignore it, but he seemed interested, too. I started doing some research on the web and found Gardening with Guineas. We read through it, and picked through it, and now we have guineas. My boyfriend is not much of a reader, but he read Gardening with Guineas. It helped us decide that we could raise them. It is full of information on how to house them, how to train them, and how to take care of them. If you want guineas on a small scale, don't even get any birds until you read this book.

I will provide proper housing and feed as well. I wish I would have read this book much earlier and spared the lives of many guineas. I love guinea fowl and feel better going into the new season with this book in hand!

At Shady Hollow Gamebirds we produce over 3,000 guineas on our farm annually. We are leading the field with Guinea Fowl genetics and have over 60 varieties. Our farm got to this point by starting with a few keets and Gardening With Guineas. This story and guide leads beginners and experienced owners through rearing and keeping Guinea Fowl. With every guinea order from our hatchery we strongly recommend getting a copy of Gardening With Guineas. There is practical, conventional, scientific and modern information on all aspects of feeding, breeding, raising and housing guineas. This guide is a must for those who have or would like to have Guinea Fowl.

As a student teacher I got this book after reading "the first six weeks of school" which is also part of the responsive classroom series. "rules in school" goes into more detail about creating rules with students, and goes through steps teachers should take in disciplining students, for example the "3 R's of teacher language": reinforcing, reminding, and redirecting. It also has a detailed rationale for when and how to use logical consequences. this book taught me more than my classroom management class and is a great resource.

If you teach early childhood (includes grades pre-k through third) this is a book you will definitely want to add to your collection. From greeting the children each morning to walking them to the bus in the afternoon, this book thoughtfully outlines all the reasons a teacher is a child's friend. In addition to viewing the teacher as a friend, this book is great to read at the beginning of the school year because it highlights the fun activities found in most early childhood classrooms (i.e. star of the week, storytime, holiday fun, and more). P.K. Hallinan is a master at being able to identify with the young child, as well as being a gifted poet.

Teenagers need to be taught practically how to manage all of their homework. Julie's book does just that. It makes sense, the methods are easy to apply, and it is great when parents and their kids can read the book together. I recently gave a talk to teenagers using the principles of the book and the kids were very receptive. Definitely recommended for any parents with kids of "homework" age!
This book can really help you get organized.....

Lately, many teenagers feel like they under the same crunch as their parents to get everything done (school, homework, friends, chores, jobs, etc.), and yet still want free time- and this book can really help you get your work done and still have a life, at the same time. The way that Julie Morgenstern writes this book is different than your typical organizing book- because it helps you to create an organizational system that caters to your personal needs, not someone else's. Julie states that since every teen as different hobbies, interests, activities, etc., their usage of time and the way their bedroom is organized will also be different.
Instead of giving you the same organizing system to use as everybody else, this book gives you a basic five-plan organizational system that you can apply to organizing your bedroom and managing your time better. It also features tons of helpful hints, real-life stories and anecdotes, and more to help you to get organized. Asides from being helpful, these stories and tips are also motivational and inspirational.
So, for all of those teens who have tried countless times to get organized but still find themselves in a mess, this book will definitely help you to get organized and start living your life better and more well-managed.

I bought this for my teenage daughter and could see a big improvement after she read it. This book contains information that will help provide the foundation for skills needed throughout her adult life. I only wish that I had found this for my oldest daughter who has since gone off to college. If it didn't have the word "teenager" in it I'd send her a copy.
