This book is a great visual tool to help with the concepts. I used it and found it very helpful for remembering the concepts easier. It is a great book!!

Not a college level supplement - maybe Jr High?

This "practice" (workbook) paperback accompanies the Hewitt text, 'Conceptual Physics' and is not worth the additional expense. It's hokey illustrations and approach are left-overs from the '90's "simplified approach" to teaching college level "conceptual physics." I keep a copy of this "workbook" on my shelves to remind me never to use it, or any of the similarly illustrated "laboratory manuals," that accompany the Hewitt texts for "college level" physics and physical science courses.

THE PRINT IS TOO SMALL

I THOUGHT I'D SAVE 5 BUCKS BY BUYING THIS OVER A TRADE SIZE DICTIONARY. THE PRINT IS VERY SMALL AND ALMOST BLURRY. IT'S TOO DIFFICULT TO READ UNLESS I AM UNDER A VERY BRIGHT LIGHT. I AM AN AVID READER AND I DON'T HAVE PROBLEMS READING OTHER PAPERBACK BOOKS OF THE SAME SIZE, SO I CONCLUDE THAT THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE BOOK, NOT WITH MY EYESIGHT. SPEND THE EXTRA FEW DOLLARS AND PURCHASE A LARGER SIZED DICTIONARY.

Follows in a great tradition

Remember the rubbish kids used in high school Spanish, taking their "Spanish" from the lady from Yourtown USA, who had never spoken Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country, or even spoken Spanish with a native speaker of Spanish? Remember the jocks taking "Spanish" in college for the distribution requirement, with the vacant looks on their faces, who got passed for football, or because their parents were alumni? Remember the textbook style stuff these people used (meaning bought and never cracked)? If your nostalgic for that era, here's your "Spanish Dictionary". The U of Chi Spanish dictionary was always a bit brief, and the present crew seems to have thought that it should be even briefer, so here you have a "Brief Spanish Dictionary". It used to identify a lot of regional usages, in fact that was a selling point. Well, people complain about how much regional variation there is in Spanish, how slangy it is. Even Spanish native speakers! So, let's trim it down! Leave it to the New U of Chi Spanish Dictionary to lead the crusade against local idiosyncracy! Don't let those people in Chile or wherever get away with using their own lingo. Snuff it out! Don't list it, don't bother with it. It ain't there, no problem.
If the word ain't in your "Spanish" textbook, it ain't in this "dictionary". Welcome to "Spanish 101", eternally on the 101 level. No sangria, no senyorita, nada. No seas tonto, compa. Compra otro diccionario y aprende el castellano.
(The cabron who said that this was better than the Oxford dictionary, well, el tipo ese se equivoca, o mentio, o es mentecato.)

Small but very useful.

I am working on upgrading my Spanish and, of course, have on hand to help me do this 20 or 30 books on grammar, lexicon, usage, etc., not to mention reading matter in Spanish. I have a large dictionary and one whose definitions are in Spanish, the "Diccionario Estudiante" put out by the Spanish Royal Academy, containing many Americanisms, giving definitions of all the principal meanings of a word and examples of use. But you still need often to check out the corresponding English word. This pocket dictionary is a neat little supplement, with intelligent and up-to-date word selections and definitions (including many vulgar and colloquial words and expressions), easy to carry, pop it out and review a dozen or so words while you're having coffee or waiting for a bus some place. Sure, it's not the last word in dictionaries, but it's a good word. You won't regret having bought it.

Small type and strange font makes this new version painful to use. I went back to the much superior 1987 Fourth Edition.

Best dictionary of its size, bar none

This dictionary was recommended by my Spanish teacher -- I don't regret buying it. Classmates who bought other ditionaries (such as the Oxford, I think it was) often needed to borrow mine. It simply has more of the words we needed to look up. Later, I bought the New World Spanish/English dictionary, and hated it. It seems to be missing a lot of words. Looking words up feels more frustrating. It's hard to explain. I just don't love the New World the way I love my Chicago.

The verb section is handy. Looking up phrases (not just words) is very easy and intuitive; you find phrases in bold, listed underneath their main word (for example, "Don't count your eggs before they hatch" would appear under eggs, count, or both).

Si habla español, este diccionario le ayudará tambien. Contiene buena información del inglés.

A remarkably well organised book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-18
Although undeniably written for a younger adolescent audience, this textbook introduces very clearly the principles of the French language that one would find even in a much higher level book such as "Parallèles, Communication et Culture," and is intended for an audience with no background in French. Nearly all French words and phrases are introduced with the English translation upon being first introduced. One aspect of this book that places it among my favourite textbooks is that new vocabulary and grammatical concepts are clearly separated from the main text in individual boxes, allowing one to quickly locate a forgotten word or point of grammar. One should not be discouraged from using this book simply because of the age of its intended audience, because one will not learn "kiddie French" or some such grotesque thing.

Absolutely terrible!!

This book is one of the worst french books i have ever seen. This one is the first one so you would think it would have just a little more english than french to help the students understand french grammer, writing styles, etc. But it doesnt, everything is in french and the authors dont explain anything. No voc list! just a bunch of words mixed together. The authors wrote the book for litte middle schoolers. Lots of little play songs and games, YOU DONT LEARN FRENCH. The other level books are just as bad as well. The kit we got came with a vissual tape and CD-ROM, that was even worst, the speakers were way to fast and the drills didn't help you if you weren't in those particular situations (I lost my keys and stuff like that).

A great thing to have if your child is using the math journal and the homework sheets. It is worth the money to have this reference on hand instead of going to the website and "try" to find the applicable materials and then dealing with printing them and such. This has helped expotentially in my child's knowledge of the material he is required to know in 5th grade. We are very happy we purchased this book as a reference.

Jumping the snark (for the toddler/ pre-k crowd)
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-09
I got this for my 3 yo so we could explore ways of talking to people (each other, family and friends) and work on tone (who knew toddlers could dish snark so early?). She responds to the pictures, where some of the kids look like her and her friends at daycare. I like that there is just the right amount of text, not too didactic, and there are great opportunities for her to imagine what the kids might be saying to each other. She really could identify with the scenes depicted - the illustrations are thoughtful and pleasing. Great opportunity to tackle potentially tough topics, like learning how to share and how to respect other people. Best line: getting along can be more important that getting your way all the time.

I have two children, a seven year old boy diagnosed with aspergers, and a four year old boy. I picked it up primarily for my older son.

There is something about the flow of ideas in this book which is very engaging. I found this myself and both of my sons were taken in by it too. The language is clear and logical and quite simply makes a lot of sense. I think this is an excellent book for children such as my older son who need the kind of reasoning used in the book to be layed out logically and explicitly for them.

This is a great book to teach children about getting along & nowadays teaching children to get along is so important. I purchased the book as a gift & the truth is I really bought this book hoping the parent's reading the book might learn something; it is hard to teach something you don't know yourself.

Good Intermediate Spanish Textbook

Review Date: 2008-05-30
I used this textbook in my intermediate Spanish class in college (SPI 201 & 202). I found the choice of vocabulary throughout the chapters to be strange, but I like the grammar explanations.

Here are the chapters in this book:

Preface: Bienvenidos
1. Tipos y estereotipos
2. La comunidad humana
3. Costrumbes y tradiciones
4. La familia
5. Geografia, demografia, tecnologia
6. El hombre y la mujer en el mundo actual
7. El mundo de los negocios
8. Creencias e ideologias
9. Los hispanos en los Estados Unidos
10. La vida moderna
11. La ley y la libertad individual
12. El trabajo y el ocio

My favorite part of the book were the sections on the subjunctive. I used them as a reference when I was writing my book. If you want to look up the sections on the subjunctive in this book, bookmark the following pages: 120, 166, 197, 224, & 241.

Divison flash cards a great help to learn in a fun way
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-14
Bought these for my Grandson who was a little behind in his division, to help him learn in a fun way. They were used every day at dinner and he and his 8-year old sister practiced. There's no pressure and it's fun, and it's made a big difference in his math problems using division. It's much more interesting and fun than plain old problems. The cards are big and easy to read and the kids really like them. Now he doesn't need them anymore, and his sister is using them to "play" (learn!). Now they will be donated for someone else to have fun learning.

Deck omits some division facts
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-31
These cards work fine for standard drilling. But I wanted to play War with them as a way of making math facts more fun. It didn't occur to me when I ordered them that the answer to one side being printed on the other would make games difficult to play. Moreover, I found the cards impossible to shuffle because they're so big and flimsy.

This deck's biggest flaw is that it omits some of the division facts. I assume this is done so that the deck will have the same number of cards as the other math facts decks. It appears that mostly trivial cases are omitted, such as most of the divide-by-1 facts. I wish this had been part of the product description.

This is a simple book of a Little Sal, and Little Sal's mother, and Little Bear, and Little Bear's mother, who get mixed up with each other on Blueberry Hill.

It's very realistically written and illustrated, and the exciting part isn't too scary for little ones.

I will note that it's a bit long - maybe better for kids with longer attention spans than shorter ones. If they're as young as Little Sal is, it might be better to wait a year before reading :)

I don't understand the positive reviews here or the caldecott award. The sketchings are artistically done, true, but in a way an adult can appreciate intellectually; they don't really evoke emotion. The story is a yawner.
