My little girl just turned 1 and she loves these books. She can easily hold them herself and turn the pages. The pictures are bright and engaging and the thick board pages stand up to her torture time after time. I also recommend the animals book just like this.

I had one of the Bright Baby books (colors) in my daughter's "library." I liked it so much better than most of what she had because it was one object per page with a big, real picture. Many of her other books had multiple pictures per page which made it hard to focus on one image or they had cartoonish pictures that weren't always a good representation of what they were supposed to be. Based on the ease and clarity of the Bright Baby Colors book, I ordered the First Words and the Animals books. I am not disappointed. With these books, there's one picture per page for my daughter to point to and for me to tell her what it is. I can tell that she's recognizing these pictures a lot easier and a lot quicker than images in other books. They are definitely a great tool for fun learning.

We were given this book in the hospital when my daughter was born as a gift from a community literacy project. Now, at 7 months, it is one of her favorites. The format is perfect for a young baby with only one word and its corresponding picture per page. The beautiful photographs are set against a colorful background and the pages hold my daughter's attention much longer than most of the books specified for her age. The other bonus is its sturdy construction. Since my daughter loves to explore her books with her mouth, her other board books quickly become worn around the edges. Not this one. The durable material of which it is made is holding up beautifully. Highly recommend!

Normally I would say that my daughter is a little old for this type of book. At 5 she is a bit beyond little board books without many words. But for laying a foundation for Spanish, this book is just what both she & I need. The simple sentences allow us to see what exactly each word means, as well as get an intuitive grasp on the grammer, and the pronunciation guide in the back is VERY helpfull.
I know that we will quickly move beyond this book, but for now I view it as essential for our grasping Spanish. In fact, I plan on buying the other books in this series.

This is another book that I enjoyed by this author. My children have asked me to continue to purchase this books and they read them all the time. I see the joy and excitement on their faces as they say different words in Spanish and actually know the meaning. I feel that it is important for the and myself to learn a second language, and books like these have been able to serve as a base for my entire family. It's easy to read and grasp, and a good reference to look at when necessary. Keep up the great work Gladys and I'll keep reading your books. Learning is a continuous process and now it's become really fun!

I am bilingual and am raising my son bilingual, too. This is an excellent book and series with adorable pictures, and each page has both english and spanish on it. The back includes pronunciation guides for all the vocabulary (both for english and spanish) which is helpful for my husband, a non-native speaker. It's very hard to find quality bilingual books- I've looked around a lot and loved these so much I have even given them as gifts to friends who want to introduce their kids (and themselves) to the language.

I had to return this book to the seller which I did the very next day after receiving it. The seller tried to deduct 20% of the cost of the book plus shipping from the credit. After I had emailed the seller telling them that 20% was unacceptable, they lowered it to 10%.
I would not purchase another book from them.

I purchased the level 1 part 1 traditional book and was happy with that purchase. However, I wanted to start learning the simplified characters and had seen the level 1, part 1 simplified first edition and liked THAT, so thought that the second edition would be fine....WRONG. The biggest complaint is that in the level 1, part 2, unlike part 1, the characters are entirely too small so that not only is recognition difficult but trying to write them out is almost impossible for the more complicated characters requiring 5 or more strokes.
Another pet peeve is that some chapters have cartoons that follow the dialogues, which is fine, but the characters in the cartoons are TRADITIONAL and NOT Simplified....! WHat's up with that?!
Additionally, I purchased the 4 cd's that accompany the book at a cost of almost $50 and they are of extremely poor quality. You can tell that someone has overlaped the original recordings and on top of that, in many cases, the additions do not follow the BOOK! There is additional vocabulary on the cd's for some chapters, and the vocabulary is NOT in the book! They clearly either rushed this second edition or did a very poor editing job.
I say check out OTHER resources before thinking about this book.

Textbook is for use in a classroom

There seems to be some misunderstanding with the previous review. The Integrated Chinese has been created mainly for use in class. Therefore the supplementary vocabulary is intended for creative activities in the classroom. Compared to many textbooks the characters are written quite large and in the new edition the printing is much better and clearer than in the original edition.
Students can buy the character workbook to practise characters if they still find the characters too small. In the real word, chinese characters are written very small and students are gently eased into recognizing smaller sizes gradually.
The CDs are crisp and clear.
It is explained in the introduction that, contrary to other editions, students can find at the end of the book the alternative characters for many original documents included in the main body of the textbook.
Nowadays traditional characters are coming back in use in advertising and "chic" business premises in China and in Taiwan some companies do use simplified characters as logos. Young people on both sides of the straits are used to reading both sets of characters. Consequently authors of good textbooks do no think they should deny the knowledge of both traditional and simplified characters when most young and middle-aged Chinese speakers use them in their everyday lives

One of my favorite books, but the planetary tables end in 2006

I absolutely love this book, so much so that I have given it as a gift a number of times and my copy is one of the most well-worn volumes on my bookshelf.
Among its many outstanding features are the Planetary Tables on pp. 134-135 that show you where the visible planets will be located as the years pass. The tables run from 1997-2006. The tables in the current edition are therefore out of date (type "134" into the "Search Inside" box and look at pp. 134 and 135).
I realize this is a minor quibble, and it is the ONLY reason for my 4-star rating. But these pages deserve an update. There are easy ways to get planetary information on the internet but it would be nice if the tables were updated in the book.

This book is a very good guide for the beginner as well as veteran stargazers. The book's biggest asset lies in the way the stick figures are drawn. Unlike the drawings before this book was published Rey's drawings are realistic in shape, corresponding to the name of the constellation, making them easy to spot and memorize.

This book is the BEST format for learning the constellations with your kids, and getting a good feel for the "summer sky", "winter sky", etc... Even my six year old can pick out obscure groupings by using the charts. We spend evenings after dinner finding as many as we can and we can hardly wait for camping this summer!

When I was a kid, my father had a clever response to my "Why?" He threw books at me. Once I asked about the stars, and this book was what I got. And what a book it was! It taught me the mechanics of the nights sky, about the Moon and planets, what the constellations looked like and how to find them in the sky... Everything I needed to go outside and start finding things.
The book didn't stop there. It teaches about the seasons, the difference between 'star time' and 'sun time', why the stars and constellations precess as they do, and MUCH more.
All this was about 1957. For whatever reason, my interest in all this got rekindled around 1997. But my old friend - the book my father gave me - had been lost many years before. So, I went to a local book shop, looking for a some kind of substitute, and to my astonishment, there it was! A copy of HA Rey's book, my long lost friend! So I was off again, looking at the easy-to-use diagrams, finding the constellations in the sky.
You may go to astronomy forums on the net, and you'll find this book mentioned all too seldom. The one most mentioned (to my observation) is "Turn Left At Orion", which is a fine publication, but it is NOT a beginner's book. Rey's is, and there isn't one better, and never has been. (The net forums seem to be for folks that are beyond the beginning stage, and I've found none designed for kids just starting. So, for absolute beginners, these forums can mislead, though, I'm sure, not intentionally.)
For absolute-beginner backyard astronomy, if you're looking for a book for your kid (or you're a kid looking for something to pester your parents to buy), you've found it. And at a rediculously low price to boot.
If I were king, this book would be in every library that calls itself a library. No praise can be too high, for this book does, exactly and completely, what it purports to do. Mr. Rey passed in 1977 (Wikipedia, "HA Rey"), and his work has long outlived both him and his wife. But, as long as a publisher with a heart and brain exists, his masterpiece will continue to show kids (of any age) the way to the stars.

I have seen and read most catechisms, bible studies, and intro to theology books on the market. My background includes a Master's in Theology. I would recommend the entire Didache Series and Introduction to Catholicism in particular. The doctrine is sound, the format attractive, the content enlightening, and it lends itself to use on several levels. It is long overdue that we have in the Church such a great series of textbooks for young (and not so young!) adults.

Well I guess this is no real big surprise as Dr Hahn is perhaps the best American Catholic mind I have ever encountered.
First his conversion story got me thinking and when you do that and have a resource like Dr Hahn available well you start to understand.....and understanding in my case led to my ongoing attempt to return to the Catholic Church (infant baptism and then Mass 50!!! years later.
Now as I am waiting to see if I can get healthy enough to go through RCIA or I move on to Purgatory I still am reading anything I can afford with his name on it. My 20 years as a S Baptist Adult Bible teacher, Prison Ministry creator and teacher, Sunday night preacher left behind I am one of the Church homeless, oh I go to Mass, but no Eucharist makes it much less than it should be. Without the good Dr this would be a lost cause and for that I am thankful for all his books and studies.
Now about this book 'Indroduction to the Catholic Church' and it's more popular brother 'Understanding the Scriptures' both part of the 4-volume 'Didache Series' put out by Midwest Theological Forum. Two other titles complete the series but right now these two are more than enough to fill your mind & spirit with knowledge, insight, wisdom, and hope, while laying down the best foundation for the Catholic faith you can find in this world. Now what kills me is that this was written for high school students, but everyone, and I mean everyone who professes the Catholic Faith as theirs will benefit from just these two books the four together, well I believe you can begin teaching others.
The Introduction is perfect for the new Catholic to see a wonderful view of the Faith as a whole organic Body. The cradle Catholic, blessed persons that they are, will be refreshed and revitalized as the sweeping view of their lifelong faith is written out as well as ever done in this modern age.
So in conclusion anyone of, or interested in the Catholic faith can do no better than this book or this and 'Understanding the Scriptures' and even better the entire 'Didache Series' which all of us this side of Vatican II are blessed to have for comprehending the whole of the One Truth Faith, the One Holy and Apostolic faith, the beautiful and rich Catholic faith.

Simply the best one-volume introduction to the Catholic faith that I have ever seen.
I was first introduced to this book (and this series) when a close friend who teaches theology at my son's high school ordered a sample set.
I was blown away. There is no other way to describe this.
The book is ideal for Catholic high schools (and, for that matter, some Catholic colleges) and also for RCIA.

Very, very highly recommended.

Does Not Cover The Full Scope of Technical Writing

This book was a required text for an introductory Technical Writing course. I would not have purchased it otherwise. The emphasis of the book is on writing standard business reports and does not cover the full scope of modern Technical Writing. (no white papers, no procedural manuals, no scientific articles, etc.)
The book is wordy and poorly organized. Several editing errors were spotted.
I personally feel there are far better references than this for technical writing.
Try:
The Non-Designer's Design Book
Untechnical Writing - How to Write About Technical Subjects and Products So Anyone Can Understand (Untechnical Press Books for Writers Series)
Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications Third Edition

Although intended as a college-level textbook for technical writing students, many working professionals, both writers and engineers, will find this book useful as well. It provides a sound discussion of fundamental techniques and processes with extensive examples. The chapters on writing, collaboration, writing ethically, and writing for international readers cover topics that are important in business, yet not often covered in textbooks. My only wish is that part 3 included more document types to make this book an even more useful daily reference.

Reading and absorbing this text will strengthen key skill areas of technical communication. Even if you're not reading this text in conjunction with a technical writing course, I highly recommend you take the time to do at least one of the exercises at the end of each chapter.
Check out the accompanying web site that supports the text. One gripe: some of the chapters have self-tests, and some don't. However, there is no way to tell until you've clicked on the link, and waited for a blank page.
This text is well written, and focused like a laser beam on the challenge of creating information that adds value to the reader, rather than burdening the reader with time wasting prose.
Favorite chapter: Creating Tables and Figures.

Its okay, but wouldn't have bought it if I didn't need it.

The book was required for a Junior level course I'm taking at a local college and that is why I bought it. My personal opinion is that there were too many writers on this book. It is poorly organization and broke some of the basic rules in writing a reference book, such as referencing various studies without actually providing the citation for the study.
I personally feel there are far better references than this one for technical writing.

It would be more helpful to have the authors added more figures which are for illustrating the lessons and for examples. Thanks

We are huge Todd Parr fans. This book is one of our very favorites. I especially appreciate the message that no feelings are bad,and that there are so many ways to express them!
Excellent book to read to curious toddlers!

My son really enjoys when I read this book to him. He has learned to act out the feelings like "scared", "happy", "crying" and "cranky"... we both laugh together everytime we go through this exercise when we read the book. It has also helped me control his toddler tantrum - when he starts being cranky, I simply remind him of the book and tell him to act out the other "feelings" - and he totally forgets why he was cranky! Thanks, Todd Parr! I would definitely recommend this book to parents of other toddlers.
Another cute Todd Parr board book

Illustrations are fun and funny, and helps me (Dad) "illustrate" emotions for my young daughter. She finds the faces funny.

Great way to teach kids that everyone has feelings - some serious and some silly. Drawings are fun, and the message is beautiful.

I was hoping for a book that covered normal feelings like happy, sad, proud, etc. Instead this book is about off beat feelings like "I feel like camping with my dog." I am sure this is an appealing story for little children with all of the bright colors and pictures. However, if you are looking for legitamate feelings this is not the book.
