The importance of Family quilts
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-23
This is a beautiful family story which encompasses many generations of growing up, coming to America and watching how customs change as new experiences are learned. A favorite dress and shawl are made into a quilt by elders in the family after the clothing is outgrown. This quilt becomes a family heirloom and is used over and over again as a wedding canopy, as a tablecloth, a picnic spread, a wrap for new babies and I'm certain for many other usages. When something is made with love of things that have meaning for us, it becomes a very special gift. This book tenderly goes through the use of this particular quilt through many generations. A throughtfully written book to be cherished, as was the quilt.

A friend showed me her copy of this book and I immediately ordered four copies. Every quilter should have a copy and I would love to see every child have one too. (It's a great gift!) What a beautiful family story! One thing I really like is that the illustrations are of real people.

This book is wonderful for the many reasons listed. I first found it at the library in hardback and my daughter and I love it. When I ordered the paperback for her own copy, we realized that the paperback ends 5 or 6 pages short. It fails to discuss Patricia's own family.

Get 'em out of the house
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-01
This is a masterwork by one of the founders of the Scouting movement. It is designed to provide children (boys) with ideas and plans to make everything from kites to traps to invisible ink. It is writen in a style that is easy for the child to understand. In an age when kids can't be pried away from the TV and video games, this book takes us back to a simpler time when kids were sent outside in the morning and didn't come back in until supper.
My 25 year old son asked for this for Christmas because he loved it so as a boy, and I wouldn't part with my copy.

This book is an excellent "how-to" guide for any project imaginable, many of which have become "lost arts" in todays society. Great for outdoor enthusists as well as scouters, with tons of fun crafts, activities and skills for the taking!! It contains many alternative activities to video gaming, virtual reality, and electronic pastimes to get kids outdoors and thinking and learning creatively. I gave one to all seven of the boys and men in my family for Christmas, and they all love it.

Old fashioned boyhood projects and information

Review Date: 2008-01-08
Our son loves to do outdoorsy and handywork types of things, so this book has been fun for him. He is 9. Some of the projects are still a bit too complicated for him to do on his own, and some he likes to read about but doesn't necessarily want to do, but he has enjoyed the pictures and descriptions of "how things were made in the old days" like his grandpas used to do.

More coffee table book than practical treatise...
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-25
I was rather disappointed in this book, as I had bought it based in large part on other's reviews, thinking it would give my boys some really good ideas on things to do with their idle time. When I received and thumbed through the book, however, it appeared clearly more of a nostalgic coffee table book than a "how to" manual of the activities/projects it covers. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone seeking help with filling up a boy's idle time, but instead to those needing another book for their coffee table or bathroom rack. It's a nicely written book, but I believe improperly packaged/marketed as a "how-to" book, misleading the buyer/reader.

I just love Prelutsky. I have many of his books and read them to my grandchildren as often as I can. His use of language is so adventurous, so creative and often very funny. It really gets the kids to think and hopefully be adventurous and creative in their own use of our wonderful English language.I must confess I often read out aloud to myself, I love a bedtime story even though I am over 60. Rhythmic language and a bit of a giggle really helps me sleep.

I have been reading this book to my 3 year old son every night for the past week. He is a TERROR to get to bed despite keeping him in his regular routine. After we started this book all I would have to say after bath is "time for Parents think I'm sleeping" and he hops in bed without a fuss. The poems are pretty cute and the pictures are a delight. I think he likes it bc he thinks he's getting one over on his parents just like the boy in the book. I am thrilled with this book and intend on getting more from this author.

Nice collection of poems

Review Date: 2000-03-14
This collection of poems relate to bedtime and nighttime. While much shorter than Jack's better known collections ("New Kid on the Block", etc.), I believe the emotional range is broader in this book. This book includes wistful poems and cutesy-scary poems, that would feel out of place in Jack's funny poems compilations. Of course, there are many funny poems, but the real gems are the others.

High marks to Jack.

As a public school teacher and teacher trainer I feel strongly that the best reform schools can make is involving teachers and administrators in professional conversations as colleagues about teaching and learning. This book is a very good "how to do it" manual.

I needed this book for a college class. The price of the book was very reasonable and I was quite pleasantly surprised that the book was actually interesting. This is one book that I plan to keep and not sell back to the school. I think the book will be a good resource even after I've finished my degree work.

Golden Dancer
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-21
In the movie Inherit the Wind, the story of Golden Dancer is related to the audience. Golden Dancer was a beautiful and expensive wooden rocking horse that a family bought for its child after saving for it. The first time the child rode the horse, it collapsed as the wood was rotten to the core; so, is the DuFour premise as found on page 37. His conclusion that all students can achieve at the same level (learn specified topics) is asinine. He argues that all that is needed for struggling students is more time and support. He refuses to take into account intelligence and student effort (responsibility) in his equation. If his premise has any chance of coming true, teachers will have to dumb down what they teach to the lowest common denominator. Additionally, he and his colleagues lump all "traditional schools" into the same problem heap. His approach is simplistic and insulting. I would give this book zero stars, but that is not an option.

This book is well presented and has a lot of information for parents at the beginning and some suggestions throughout the book. Most of the illustrations are of boys and I would have preferred some of girls because I bought this for my daughter but it is fine because it is a good way to start the conversation about the difference when she is ready.

My son loved this book from the time we got it. In fact he is now 3 1/2 and had been using the potty for quite some time and he still asks to read it. Loved it's pro-breastfeeding slant. Also really appreciated its talk about diapers as we used cloth and always dropped the poopy in the toilet when they were dirtied. (Packages of disposables also tell you to do that actually as it is considered bio-hazardess waste) However, if you are not pro-breastfeeding and are uncomfortable speaking frankly about body functions, then this wouldn't be the book for you and there are probably many other books out there that would suit you better. Highly recommend this book!

Unlike most books, this book pictures a mother nuring her baby and a co-sleeper. I am not fond of the cartoon illustrations, but they are not terrible (I usually prefer photos instead). My 19 mo. old daughter loves this book.

This book has lots of great info for parents as well as nice pictures, but it's written for older kids who can already speak well and ask complicated questions. It seems like it's aimed toward children over 2 1/2, most of whom are already in the process or done learning to use the potty. I do think the notes for parents will be useful for me.

Although this is a copy of the ology books, it is better than all of them. My son likes it because the information inside can actually be used. For example: in Wizardology, you make a potion with poppy flowers and phoenix feathers. Where can my son get phoenix feathers? This book tells real oils to use for wands and provides lots of history. It provides an astonomical chart.

The kids thought the book had interesting facts and LOVED making the "Harry Potter" type wands to play with. The Wands were really neat, but on the fragile side. Make sure they don't over tighten them when screwing the two ends together. My son broke his that way and both of them have lost pieces of it just by "casting their spells". The good side of it is that they glue well with wood glue and they were half the price here than Borders. I was able to buy both kids a book and still saved $4! I hope this helps.

When we found out my father in law was dying of pancreatic cancer, one of our main concerns was how to deal with it with our kids. This book was a great resource, especially for our introspective 11 year old. She was able to read it on her own and ponder the chapters. It gave her great comfort to know that because of Grandpa's faith in Christ, he has a promise of eternity in heaven - free from any more pain or suffering. She also like to read that heaven is going to be exciting and active - not a bunch of cloud-sitting and harp playing. In fact she said, "Now that I've learned more about what heaven will be like, I'm a little jealous that Grandpa gets to go so soon." I highly recommend for any family in a similar situation.

HeavenEveryone should read this book, Christian or not. If you are a Christian, you will become more excited than ever to leave this earth and go to your new home. If you are not a Christian, you will be ready to give your life to God, so that you too, may go to HEAVEN!!! Everything that Mr. Alcorn writes is backed by scripture, so this is not a "made up" story. "Heaven" has given me more determination than ever to try to reach the unsaved.

Terrific book for kids and adults!

I appreciate all the references to scripture so you can look things up for your self if you choose. I will now begin reading this to my son so he will have a better understanding of what Heaven is all about. This book is very uplifing. A must have for all Christian homes!

Now that we are settled abroad, we just went on a short flight and brought the book with us to the airport-- they could not believe they were actually in the airport while looking at the pictures in the book of the check in counter, security line, and waiting area-- it was great!
