Nonetheless, life in 17th century colonial America is apt to be less familiar to most readers than that of late 19th century America, and this book performs an enormous service in providing a concise, well-written overview of what that life was like. Hawke is especially good at exploding various myths that have evolved over the years concerning colonial life. Unlike the later volumes in the series, Hawke deals, by dint of necessity, of the larger historical situation.
Some of the topics that Hawke takes up include the structure of towns and villages, the nature of farms and the crops grown, houses and the types of objects found within them, the health of the settlers and treatment of illness, social stratification, indentured servitude and slavery, relations with Native Americans, and various superstitions. If the book was somewhat less exhilarating than some of the later books in the series, it nonetheless is quite informative. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn more about the nuts and bolts of colonial life.

log.It did not say learning log for on line activities. I felt cheated and disappointed, because it was not what we needed at all. I fell like it was a waste. I bought two, one for my son and one for his friend. Luckly, the teacher has been understanding and given us the pages he needs. Thank you. Brenda

Don't Cheat Yourself -- Buy It And Clear Up The ConfusionReview Date: 2008-08-08
If you have been secretly harboring the following thoughts:
1 - What IS the subjunctive?
2 - Is it a tense?
3 - Is it a mood?
4 - Is it a mode?
5 - Is there any difference in those words?
6 - I QUIT!
Then you have found the right book.
Calm down.
You need a close look at what the Spanish subjunctive actually is.
It is a verb form REQUIRED in certain clauses. You cannot say that you know Spanish but you do not understand the subjunctive. That is an oxymoron.
Don't you want to be honest with yourself? Of course you do.
Vogt explains the Spanish subjunctive more thoroughly than any Spanish teacher I know of, and I've learned from at least a dozen.
Buy this book and invest a few hours. The price is exceedingly low.
You'll be glad you did.
Incredible Book on the SubjunctiveReview Date: 2008-07-15
1. When to use the subjunctive and how to form its four tenses
2. Sequence of tenses and the subjunctive
3. Subordinated noun clauses
4. Subordinated adjective clauses
5. Adverbial expressions
6. Contrary-to-fact statements
7. Comprehensive exercises
The author states early in the book that many Spanish students assume that the subjunctive is all about doubt. The author is quick to explain that this assumption is problematic. The use of the subjunctive in doubt or uncertainty is only ONE of its many uses. I'm glad there's a book on the subjunctive that addresses this issue. I used to tutor a student in Spanish who thought the subjunctive was all about doubt. And trying to get her to understand that there was more to the subjunctive than just doubt was a difficult task.
The book explains how to conjugate all four tenses in the subjunctive, then it moves on to its uses. This book explains the uses of the subjunctive in the same order as many other books. First, it explains its uses in nominal clauses, then it moves on to adjective clauses, adverbial clauses, and contrary-to-fact statements. The end of the book has exercises.
I think this book is incredible, but I personally don't think it's a good idea to explain all four tenses at once. I think it's better to start out with the present subjunctive, learn how to use it, and then move on to the other tenses. The author mentions the future subjunctive and the future perfect subjunctive, but he doesn't explain how to use them. I wish he had; it's difficult to find reference materials that explain the future subjunctive.
I highly recommend this book. 5 stars!!!

Also, some of the grammar is just embarrassing: Pharoah "has very much money" etc. Oh, and the word "bad"? It's in there about a million times, too.
After reading this Bible to my two small children daily for a couple of years, I couldn't take it any more, and we bought a new one. Talk about "bad." Skip This version!!!
Too simple for four-year oldsReview Date: 2007-04-28
For example, the story of "David and Goliath":
"A giant has come to fight against God's people. The giant's name is Goliath. All the men of Israel have run away from him. They are afraid to fight him because he is so big but David is not afraid. David knows that God will help him. David does not have a gun but he has a slingshot. Do you see it in his hand? He takes some stones and uses his slingshot to throw a stone at the giant. The stone hits the giant in the head and the great Goliath falls over dead.
- What is the giant's name?
- What did David hit him with?
- Why were all the other people afraid of Goliath?"
That's all to that story. For ages four and up, look somewhere else.
Nice Bible For 3-6 Year OldsReview Date: 2007-04-01
Unfortunately, the book isn't really set up for much handling by little ones. After a few times of being picked up by the cover (like just the back cover for example), the whole insides tore off the hardback cover and there's no way to put it back together again.
