I really like the way these authors introduce Teaching credential students to the "real" world of teaching. They definitely don't sugar coat things. It is an interesting read and there are tons of call out boxes with pertinent information. For example, I am debating whether to teach at a private or public school when I finish with the credential program. In one chapter, there is a personal testimony of a woman who taught at public for numerous years and then switched to private. She explains the pros and cons of each situation. I found this information to be very helpful and pertinent to my future teaching career. As far as textbooks go, it is very well written and entertaining. This is probably a book I will hang onto at the end of the semester.

Okay, this is a textbook for a lower-level course in psychology of human development. It is pretty simplistic, I think. I wouldn't buy it unless it was assigned to me in a class or I was writing TV screen play and need some names and vocabulary to stick in a character's mouth.

I enjoyed the readings for most chapters in this text. The information is generally well-presented and nicely segmented for quick reading. The author incorporates the little asides (mini research articles) to break things up and add some flavor and interest at different points in the book, which I also appreciated.

Unfortunately, the chapter on Intelligence is a train wreck. It's fine and expected to mention Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, but the author couches that theory as the intelligence theory of choice for psychologists. His fawning over Gardner's theory is irresponsible given the total lack of empirical support. Then the author proceeds to rake Jensen over the coals, despite the fact that Jensen's research is extensive and well-supported. The author, at times without citations, directs the student to ridiculous conclusions about intelligence research. For example, he downplays the importance of heritability in intelligence and states a hyperbolic case for the effects of environment. Being very familiar with the intelligence research, I was surprised, but shouldn't have been, that someone could selectively choose to ignore what the vast body of data shows. I can only hope that most grad students will look beyond this treatment of the subject of intelligence for something more substantial and less partisan.

I am a listener of the Glenn Beck radio show and I found much of his book to repeat what he says on air (surprise, surprise). I would recommend this book to a person that has not listened to Glenn Beck, or someone that wants the hard facts about oil, the economy, and global warming. I found the facts the most interesting part of the book and I will continue to use these facts as I face my liberal friends in debates!

Brilliant and witty.

Glenn Beck's book often shows the flaws in the world today. While reveling the troubles in our world and nation he often criticizes the liberals and even some conservatives for their wreckless decesions. he often provides humuros ways to solve our problems, some take these too seriously. Although he jokes about many things he often provides true thought out ideas on how we can fix problems such as the border. - great read if your not a liberal without a sence of humor.

My wife bought me a copy of Glen's Book for my birthday. As a fan of his television show, it was the perfect gift.

As a person who has first hand experience with the problems surrounding immigration, I could relate and agree with Glen's assessment.

I could also fully agree with the solutions to poverty and the sins of self-serving politicians. While I agree with these viewpoints, I hope that others that maybe wanted to agree find that the over the top humor, may dispel the gravitas of the message. Personally, I like the humor of the book and find this makes for much more interesting read than the typical "I have the answer" type of books.

Hopefully Glen Beck, through his radio, television and books will keep the heat on the groups that are slowing but surely destroying our country and our way of life. Michael L. Gooch, SPHR, Author of Wingtips with Spurs

If You Can Stomach This Guy...

If you can stomach this guy, maybe you will like the book. I can't, and didn't. I received the book as a gift and began reading with an open mind as I don't normally get to see him on television. It became apparent very quickly that he is more concerned about himself than any of the issues that he discusses. In fairness, I did not reach the end of the book so I'm basing this on the front half. Why did I not reach the end of the book, you ask? (see line one) If Glenn, himself, were to answer this review, I think he'd spend more time attacking those who do not support his views than discussing the views themselves. I can't say that I disagreed with every written word in the book, but I can say that the arrogance of the author did show through with every word.

An excellent book that should be used as reading material in any high school or college course on government, its being, construction and operation. It is detailed and full of information that makes it one of the best books written concerning early colony operations. I do recommend this book for anyone interested in early America and its govenment.

As a sat to write this review I randomly opened my copy of Democracy in a page with this quote that I had highlighted: "When the taste for physical gratifications among [democratic people] has grown more rapidly than their education and their experience of free institutions, the time will come when men are carried away and lose all self-restraint at the sight of the new possessions they are about to obtain. In their intense and exclusive anxiety to make a fortune they lose sight of the close connection that exists between the private fortune of each and the prosperity of all. It is not necessary to do violence to such a people in order to strip them of the rights they enjoy; they themselves willingly loosen their hold. The discharge of political duties appears to them to be a troublesome impediment which diverts them from their occupations and business. [...] These people think they are following the principle of self-interest, but the idea they entertain of that principle is a very crude one; and the better to look after what they call their own business, they neglect their chief business, which is to remain their own masters". This is a small sample of what you find in Democracy... It is a superb book, with timeless truths about America and about democracy in general. I read the Everyman's Library edition by Knopf, and utterly enjoyed it: good quality paper, print, translation (based on Francis Bowen's), index. Don't rely on what others tell you about the contents of this marvelous book--dive in with a pencil handy to highlight the many good quotes and enjoy!

Macionis books are always a pleasure to read. However, there is a factual innacuracy in on p. 66.

There is a photo of Japanese Americans being forced to leave for military detention camps during WWII. The book asks, "why do you think no people of German or Italian ancestry were ever treated with way?". Actually, they were. Italian Americans were also sent to detainment camps.

10,000 Italian Americans on the West Coast were required to move inland. After Italy declared war on the US, many Italian language papers and schools were closed almost overnight.

Clear, compellling authors!!

I used this text for a course in "Social Problems in Human Relations." A quote from one of my students perhaps typifies all student reactions: "Reading Sociology books used to be murder, but this text is so readable, so compelling. What happened (for the better)?!"
As instructor, I appreciate the way the authors include not
only the theoretical paradigms to accompany each social
issue, but also the political perspectives -- all in reader
friendly ways.
Each chapter opens with a brief, real-life story, helping the reader to instantly connect with the so-called "sociological imagination" and begging the reader to read on.

Review Date: 2008-03-07
I had to read this book as part of my grad school program, but found every chapter a chore. As has been said before, the authors' political bias and agenda permeates nearly every page, and the chapters that aren't directly written by McGoldrick and Carter, although more promising, are still etched with this harmful bias. Having read other writings by McGoldrick especially, I was not entirely surprised by this bias, but to find it so codified and oppressive in a textbook is inexcusable.

Another huge complaint is how dated the book is. Yes it received a new edition, but most of the academic references are no more recent than 1997 or so, and the cultural references are so horribly out of date (at least 2 references to the Dan Quayle/Murphy Brown controversy in a 2005 book anyone?) that its usefulness is in question. It is unfortunate that there is apparently no better textbook dealing with the family life cycle than this angry, biased, pessimistic, closed-minded and out-dated textbook. There is some good information scattered here and there, but I think most critical thinkers will be working so hard to see it through the political haze they will have a hard time finding it.

racist, biased, and lacking in helpful information

Review Date: 2006-12-31
The lack of practical, usable information in this book was unbelievable. Maybe if you have never, ever, in any way considered these issues it would be helpful, but I doubt it, as there was nothing that delved beyond surface, common sense information. The gross overgenderalizations about race and culture were offesive and shocking coming from people in the field. The only thing I took from the book was a heightened awareness of the judgemental biases of people -- even those claiming to be fighting against those things.

Review Date: 2006-11-03
This textbook is a decent summary of the various family life cycle issues. However, the authors' obvious political biases and leanings interfere with a balanced perspective and with the content of the book. Several people in my master's level class found the book to be biased and unhelpful in certain areas.

Professors Joan Granucci Lesser and Marlene Cooper have shown themselves to be the newest dynamic duo of clinical social work. This text, one of the most refreshing and comprehensive in the field, will surely become a standard read for all social work students in the years to come.

Refreshing, consice, yet exceptionally detailed and well presented, "Clinical Social Work Practice" may very well define an entire generation of Social Work students. A must read for any student interested in the clinical social work field. Drs. Lesser and Cooper have shown themselves to be masters in the art of therapy, and their genius is apparent in their first textbook.
