Exceptionally useful for a wide variety of research purposes
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.

The measures in this report provide a much-needed resource for quantifying the disparities in health, income, and education between states and congressional districts. This data is invaluable and will most certainly prove to be useful to students and scholars of American politics.

Truly Eye-Opening

Review Date: 2008-07-15
The American Human Development Project is far more than just a report of data and conclusions. On the contrary, it not only provides interesting insight on the state of our nation, but it gives its readers a completely fresh perspective on how to examine our collective and individual well-bring. For example, instead of emphasizing how the economy is doing (GDP, etc) we should be asking how our citizens are faring within the economy.

The report is unique and the first of its kind in that it exclusively examines the United States all the way down to its 436 congressional districts. Likewise, even more specific lenses are provided when ethnicity, age, income, etc are all included. From all this, index scores are computed and given to each locality and state, allowing readers to rank and compare just how well-off we all are. This is truly an innovative report that is well worth a long look.

Preliminary Review: BUY THIS BOOK, Challenge Both Candidates
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-07
This is a preliminary review to encourage one and all to buy this book, but especially Americans who read and are smart enough to realize that the two candidates for President are both illiterate and incoherent. I am quite sure neither one of them has read this book or any other book remotely relevant to curing all that ails America.

Some first impressions--this week-end or next I will do one of my "full up" reviews with a summarization of key points.

1) This book benefits from the best possible work of the United Nations with respect to evaluating human development.

2) The model measures a long and healthy life, access to knowledge, and a decent standard of living in a credible useful way.

3) The over-all development of this book, including font, white space, and illustrations in color, is superb.

4) The US is collapsing and this book explains why on all fronts.

I am deeply impressed by this work. It is a stake in the heart of US politics and the corruption that defines the leadership of America across all fronts (government, corporate, media, labor leaders, and religion)--all crooked and all working AGAINST the public interest.

BUY THIS BOOK! Nothing would please me more--nor be more salutory for the health of this once great Nation--than to have hundreds of you waving this book in each candidate's face, demanding that they read it, review it, and act upon its fundamental recommendations.

One small example: the book examines how low-education and low-income parents create new generations of low-education and low-income children, for lack of a coherent program to lift all children.

BRAVO!

Geography teachers will love this book. The activities cover a variety of age levels and geography comprehension levels. I use this book often as a remediation/supplemental resource. Pages copy well and instructions are well written.

I am using this book, along with an inexpensive world atlas, as a Geography course for homsechooling my 1rst grader. My only warning would be that the exercises would be too easy, and thus boring, for any child beyond third grade. I certainly recommend the book for homeschoolers in 1rst-3rd grades.

This is a pretty good step-by-step tutorial on maps, able to be used over several years. Starts out with fairly general concepts, defining them and moving on to developing good map skills.

When they say complete-they mean COMPLETE! It is wonderful. The book is recommended for 3rd-6th grade, but my 6yr old is using it. I homeschool and my children love to work on this book (even for fun). It thoroughly covers maps, U.S. Geography, the U.S. Regions, North & South America, Grid maps, Global Geography, compasses, latitude & longitude, time zones-like I said everything. For the most part it is self teaching, the kids only come to me if they have a question. It's well worth the money!

Using clear language and illuminating examples, the authors convey their deep understanding of the material they address and enable the reader to think intelligently about the complex issues we face in a digital world. They are sensitive to the concerns of parents, educators, and digital natives alike. Their recommendations are creative and practical. An important book.

This book was not very good written wise. The book is not recommended because it's sometimes, if not the majority of the time hard to grasp the concept. I would not use it for a Small Group Communication course like I had to use it for. The chapters are long and full of mumbo jumbo in my opinion. Not recommended for use.

Great Combination of Theory and Practice.

Review Date: 2004-11-17
Over the past several years I've had to read several text books, especially those having to do with speech communication. The majority of these speech communication books I have had to read are long, dry, and dull. They tend to be filled with all sorts of theories and very little actual real-life experience examples or practice. COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS isn't like that and does one of the best jobs for a textbook of combining the theories behind small group communication with vivid, real-life examples to illustrate the ideas. The book lays out the format for working in small groups, explains how and why small groups are formed, the decisions that small groups have to make, problems that small groups face, and principles of how a group can work together to complete their project and make a presentation. Terms are defined in easy-to-understand language and examples are relevant and applicable. The book is fairly easy to read and unlike most textbooks I have forced myself to read, I actually enjoyed reading COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS. I would recommend this text for any small group communication class or anyone interested in the field of small group communication.

A compendium of qualitative research: Absolute gold!
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-22
I bumped on to this book accidentally in a library while seeking for a book on qualitative research. Being a novice in qualitative research I spend the next week reading it everyday to get my first glimps into what qualitative research is. It is absolute gold for two reasons:
- It content is topical and up todate. Even for a beginner it is absolutely readable. The content is not lost in academic jargons but simple everyday English.
- The detailed bibliography speaks for itself and what is more it is given after every section. It allows the researcher to find more information elsewhere.

I have decided that it is a book one should own in his or her private library.

Thank you.

While it seems like a large chunk of change, this book is worth every penny. Ever since I've purchased it, many of my colleagues (I'm a social scientist at KU) ask to borrow it, but I never let it go. Just about any question I have about qualitative research can be answered, to some degree, with this book. What's more, even in some of the more controversial areas of qualitative research the book points to other readings that may shed light on alternate perspectives.

Just buy the book. I did, and I don't regret it for a moment. It's also nice in that it covers a wide variety of disciplines and contexts -- journalists, sociologists, communicologits, psychologists, and political scientists can all use the book with equal ease. One area, though, that I've heard the book is not as strong toward is anthropology. If you're an anthropologist, you may want to check out Holstein's interviewing methods book.

This was a required text for one of my graduate Professional Communication classes. If I lost it, I would have to buy another one because it's that good. And these text books are expensive. My professors have entire libraries at their disposal, and they chose this particular book for one of their courses. 'nuff said.
