I have bought this book as soon as I've bought my labrador, and she is still alive... I'm just joking... I have the female labrador and this book really helped me to teach her some manners and right now I have a great dog that can be with me wherever I go. If I go to the coffee shop she is with me, if I go to the beach she is with me and I have no problems with her.

This book was easy to read. It had a lot of general information about all dogs. It had really good training tips.

When I bought my little yellow lab puppy, I searched the internet and scoured reviews to buy the best book to prepare me for my new endeavor. I purchased this book, and I am sad to say, I was a little disappointed. It barely skims the surface of each topic, and did not prepare me to be a first-time puppy owner, or a first-time lab owner. I highly recommend Barron's "Training Your Labrador Retriever". I just bought it (my puppy is three months old) and I wish I had bought it first - it has much more information on how to handle your new puppy!

On December 11, 2006 I adopted a 7 week old lab puppy who needed a home. So, as a retired teacher, I needed a guide! Walton's book is practical and well written to help new, or experienced, pet owners. It has practical tips and humorous insights that make it easy to read and full of useful information. Lucky, my lab, is growing happy and healthy and I am not tearing my hair out trying to figure things out on my own.

This book provides a good overview of several ecosystem types within the neotropics, including information on plants, insects, birds, mammals, and inter-species interactions. It's written in an academic but accessible style. My only criticism is the presence of numerous typographical and measurement-conversion errors in the book. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book - I brought it with me to Peru, and read it from cover to cover.

This is just a great book if you like this sort of stuff. The content is thorough but not overwhelming, and the author does a really good job making the complex science of neotropical ecology accessible for non-academics.

I purchased it before I traveled to birdwatch in Costa Rica and wowed my companions with little tidbits and facts that I pulled pretty much verbatim from the book. It opens you eyes to things in the tropics that you would most certainly miss otherwise and should be considered indispensable for anyone traveling there with an interest in nature.

Well, this is a requirement for class, so I can't complain too much. Still, it looks to be chock full of useful tidbits.

I took this book along with me to Peru and read it during long boat rides on the river. If you have an interest in biology and ecosystems, this book is a great introduction. It covers a little bit of everything, from birds to mammals to plants. You can dip into one topic without having to read it linearly.

The book greatly enhanced my trip. Guides are great but they can't be experts in everything at once.

Great book

Very disappointed, no in-depth information here

Review Date: 2008-04-24
I just received this book and am so disappointed in it. I saw a few bad reviews, but most of them were glowing reports, many from experienced horse people about the information provided. I wanted a book about horse equipment, tack, care, etc. because I sometimes feel overwhelmed with all the "stuff" out there and what the purpose of using it is.
The day I received this book my farrier had suggested I try a "stud chain" on my horse the next time he is shod (he is a sweet horse but horrible in this one area). Yes, I thought, now I can look up "stud chain" - - but, NO, that is not in this book.
The book has black and white drawings, which are not very clear or detailed. For example, in the section on bridles there are 6 drawings of bridles, but several of them look very much alike, and although they are described there is NO information about why you would use one style instead of another. That is the type of information that I was expecting. If that is what you are looking for, don't buy this book.

I just received this book. I find it quite outdated. The drawings and illustrations are poorly done. There are only a few black and white pictures. Just beware that this is a 1998 book and I am sure you can find a more updated horse book than this one.

So many people are utterly consumed with their work life that they are avidly avoiding a spiritual experience, which is at the heart of what is ideal. This book may help serve as a gentlemenly guide to embarking on an organized hunt for fungi and an organized understanding of how to incorporate them into personal experience. Although some may argue with me, I would say this is actually high level reading.
The book provides the following:
The effects of psilocybin mushrooms
How to identify them while hunting outdoors
Tips on ingesting them and experiencing them
Pictures and diagrams to help identify them
Individual species descriptions
Poisonous look alikes
Includes a forward by renowned physician Dr. Andrew Weil

There is a wealth of info in this book and it is the best book on this subject.

This is a detailed and fun book. It's probably what you're looking for. It contains clear descriptions, many quality pictures, suggestions about variations among species, safety considerations, and a helpful rating scale of very low to very high potency, also making it clear when the potency is unknown. For me, I chose to partner this book with a larger book which includes all species, just so I'm clear what I'm looking at and for, especially when it comes to ingestion, better to be extra careful, right?

The cover of this book is not shown on Amazon, but it contains a red background with a photo of a strikingly handsome green-eyed Siberian tiger. It's nearly one-and-a-half inches thick and inside contains photography worthy of the name National Geographic Society, which contributed to the book.

This is a general science textbook for fifth-graders. It's probably used in many classrooms, though my experience with it is home educating my 10-year-old.

It's very nicely organized, with vocabulary words at the beginning of each chapter. Also included within each chapter are "explore activities" which can easily be done at home or in a classroom. Questions are sprinkled liberally throughout the text to invite discussion on what was read both for refreshing the topic and thinking further about it.

One of the most valuable parts of the book is at the end of a chapter or unit, entitled "Why It Matters." So often kids ask why it's important to learn certain concepts in various subjects, and this ties in the reading with exactly why it is important to understand.

The photographs and illustrations are simply among the best I've seen in any textbook! This is very important for those who may not be particularly interested in science. To make a confession, I'm not. But the information is presented in such an attractive way that it really does make the reader want to investigate more! In each chapter, as well, are technology links where a student can learn more about a subject with a specific internet link.

There is a teacher's manual to go with this book, but at nearly half the cost, we opted not to purchase it. Thus, there are no answers included in this book. But even science-impaired adults like me can easily find the answers simply by reading the text.

Unit A is entitled "Structures of Plants and Animals" with individual chapters on Plants and Their Parts, Plant Diversity, and Animal Diversity.

Unit B is called "Interactions of Living Things" with individual chapters on Ecosystems and Populations and Ecosystems.

Unit C is named "Earth and Its Resources" with chapters on Rocks and Minerals and Air, Water, and Energy.

Unit D is entitled "Weather and Climate" with chapters on Weather and Weather Patterns and Climate.

Unit E is named "Properties of Matter and Energy" with chapters on Properties and Structure of Matter and Forms of Matter and Energy.

Unit F is called "Motion and Energy" with chapters on Newton's Laws of Motion, Sound Energy, and Light Energy."

The back pages also include a Science handbook with such topics as using a microscope, measuring volume, mass, and many other units, using calculators, making graphs, and several more. Also included is a Health handbook with specifics on the skeletal system, respiratory system, digestive system, the senses, and many other systems.

This is an all-around great science book for anyone learning at the fifth-grade level.

This book stresses that labs are foodies and will work and learn nicely for good treats. I found Purina One dog biscuits to match its Purina One food line so that my labbie puppy gets nice nutrition while mastering her lessons. I am getting nice training results by following the directions in this book. Do exactly what is outlined and don't let up. I am a first time puppy owner and all is well!

I liked the way this book communicates. well written.
It actually explains how to train the dog by giving examples and steps.

I tried some items and have seen them to work.
A good amount of the tips I already knew about and follow out of instinct.
So it is not totally impressive but surely it puts thoughts in a structured context and refreshes old concepts.

Training is not only about when to sit and when to fetch, it is about being able to communicate with your poochie friend. If you cannot communicate, then, you cant train (not predictable results for sure) the poochie.

This book gets to the basics of what actually is being communicated by each (a lot if not all) of general behaviours we go through with our Labs.

All in All, a really good Beginer's book to training.

cheers

This book would be great for anyone who likes to applique. The bold pictures are easy to copy. There are many varieties of designs with these chapters: Stone Age Europe, Neolithic Europe, Mesopotamia, Egyptian, Minoan, Mycenaean, Greek, Chinese, Early Celtic, Barbarian, Byzentine, Romanesque, Gothic, Japanese, and Art Deco. I can also see someone who likes to make their own stencils use this book also.

While the drawings in this book are beautiful, I cannot use this book at all. The back cover states that the images are copyright-free, but the copyright inside the book states otherwise. I e-mailed the publisher and was told that I could only use the images for personal use, not commercial use. As I had purchased this book to create digital scrapbooking supplies to either sell in an on-line store or give away for free, I needed the images for commercial use. I am very disappointed in this because the images are indeed wonderful. If you want this book for personal use, go for it. But if you plan using it for any sort of commercial work, I do not recommend it.

Can I just start off by saying I love this man!?! Cesar Milan has changed the way I deal with dogs forever! I love the fact that hear is a person who understands completely that a dog is a dog and should be treated as such. There is nothing bad, or cruel, about it. In fact I would challenge anybody who says their dog is happy being treated any other way. This deck of cards gives quick tips for dealing with problem areas. You just pick the card that seems to fit your needs. The information is short, sweet and to the point. And because tt's so easy to read it's a good refresher course for helping you stay on track with your dog.

That's the Idea - We Are Lazier and Busier Than Ever

Review Date: 2008-08-16
As a dog psychologist and being an author myself, the concept behind this book is simply--practicality--and making it easy and fun on the eye. You wouldn't know it unless you are a writer or even better, have your own book published. You'll be amazed how many times I told my clients, "Yes. I have covered it in the book. It is in chapter fifteen, page 217, second paragraph and blah blah blah." Well, you get the idea. Sadly, not everyone reads or can make the time to read. This one won't get you that lost. So I agree the information isn't new, but the concept is. This is because we are lazier and busier than ever and cards sometimes make more sense. You stick it on the fridge and can remind yourself over and over again. Hey Cesar, you owe me one. :-) Kevin "The Dog Prodigy" Author of, "Hidden Secrets Behind Dog Training" - Revealing the Best & Worst Ways to Train Your Dog. (Soon-to-be Available on Amazon)
