This book is hysterical. Written in the format of notes going back and forth between Alex and his Mom regarding a pet iguana, you just may like it even more than your child (I think I do!) My five-year-old son loves the illustrations and I could read this one over and over without completely losing my mind.
This was a fun book.

My daughter picked this one. She liked the cover.
This is a fun book that with give both the reader and listener something to laugh.
Little Alex wants a baby iguana from his friend Stinky and writes a letter to his mother explaining why he needs it and has to have it to save it from the Stinky's dog Lurch. Mom writes back that Stinky's mom will not let that happen.
The exchange goes on as Alex tries all reasoning to get the iguana.
There are funny parts for parents such as one line about cleaning the cage "P.S. If you clean his cage as well as you clean your room, you're in trouble." I especially liked how Alex argued the iguana would allow him to have the brother he never had. He has one.
The artwork is very good.
This book is also a good reader book for new readers. My daughter read it in one sitting.

This book is so wonderfully written by Karen Orloff that Alex is able to appeal to all ages, races and genders. If your child has ever asked for a pet you can identify with this book. The mother son relationship is how we all remember our grown and almost grown little boys starting out.
GREAT ART, FUNNY STORY LINE, GOOD TEACHING TOOL. GREAT BOOK!

Karen Orloff and David Catrow have teamed up in this one to give us a very funny story of a little boy, Alex, who wants very, very much to have his own pet Iguana. The problem is...obviously, Mom! The entire book is consists of notes, or mini-letters, written between Alex and his mom. The little boy of course is pointing out the obvious advantages of having his own lizard in his room (in his eyes), and his mom counters each note with her own note pointing out the obvious disadvantages of having a reptile in the home..a reptile that can possibly grow to several feet long!. The unique exchange of letters is absolutely hilarious.
Each letter, both from Alex and from mom, is highlighted with some wonderful illustrations and pictures by David Catrow. They fit the text perfectly which makes this book quite easy to read to an individual child or to a group. Each letter allows the reader to open up discussion as to the arguments presented by both mom and Alex. It is fun to have the kids think of other reasons for both sides of the argument.
All in all, this is a fine little book and I do recommend you add it to your library. You certainly cannot go wrong with this one.

This book provides a very eye-opening and eventually obvious insight into what a dog or cat's diet should consist of. It alleviates all of those unwarranted fears of feeding the appropriate foods to our four-legged friends. I bought a bunch of copies to give out to people who needed to re-evaluate the way they are feeding their pets.

This book contains good information on how to feed a raw diet based on Billinghurst's barf diet. I think it would be helpful for people considering switching to a raw diet, as well as beginners.
My problem with this book is that the author annoyed me. The first quarter of the book is about how wonderful she is. The last quarter of the book is full of amazing anecdotes about animals on her diet. I don't have the patience for either. It you like anecdotes about how wonderful the author and her diet are, you will probably like this book much better than I did.
While I agree with most of the things the author says about nutrition and dog food companies, she doesn't back up anything she says. If I was starting out as a new raw-feeder, I'm not sure I would find this book very convincing. I definitely wouldn't recommend this book as your only resource.
For beginners, I would recommend "Raw Dog Food" by Carina Beth MacDonald. For people who want to understand the nutritional principles behind a raw or homemade diet, I would recommend "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets" by Donald Strombeck. They're a better investment of time and money.

If you are looking for straight forward, sound information on providing a raw diet for your pet this is a fine resource. The section on nutrients is very good. In it you will learn what food sources provide what nutients and what parts of the bodys health they aide and supportThe 'shopping list' is also a nice spring board for the newbe. There is a ratio guide that addresses serving size to weight balance. The book includes a significant resource guide as well. If you are interested in providing a Raw, natural, BARF type diet for your pet this is the book I would recomend.

This book saved my dogs' life. We struggled with a very serious allergy for years, one day I saw Kymythys' book and decided to go with the raw diet. My dogs' health turned the corner and he has never looked back. He will be 10 this year and I could not be more grateful.
I have read loads of other books on raw feeding but keep coming back to this one.

This funny, touching page turner is one of those books you try to force yourself to read more slowly because you don't want the ride to end. Pace's gift for storytelling, her deeply charming characters and her witty dialogue are on full display in this novel, and I didn't want to put the thing down until I learned what happened to Amy, the book's winning protagonist and her spirited dog, Carlie. (Though it wasn't the ending I expected, the character made a great and admirable choice--how refreshing!)
The author excels at creating characters who feel like friends. They're people you'd want to hang out with, people you root for. Who doesn't know the woman who runs into her crush just after her dog has vomited on her shirt? (Or who isn't that person herself?) Still, Pace's characters aren't caricatures. They're funnier than most folks I know, yes, but she keeps them grounded in the wonderful and flawed details of real life.
I loved CITY DOG. I think it's a book for fans of romantic comedy, for fans of dogs and "dog people," and for fans of great writing. It's a fun, fast read that will keep you laughing and smiling throughout.
In short, buy it!

What a great book! City Dog combines a compelling story, endearing characters and a creative writing style that makes it a unique, fun, and fast paced read. There are 3 narrators in the book, one of whom is the City Dog herself! In a stroke of brilliance, Pace enters into the mind of the pup and brings her to life with such enthusiasm and humor you just have to keep reading. The book tackles some difficult topics as the main character seeks purpose in her life, but it's done in a way that inspires rather than depresses.
I've read and loved all of Pace's novels, but this one takes her to a new level. If you're looking for a great weekend read, definitely buy this book!

I bought the book to help me understand a dog I had adopted who had severe issues. I was on the verge of seperating her from the rest of the family before I read this book. Now with a better understanding of why she has these behavior issues and how best to deal with them, owner and dog along with the other dogs in the home all live happily together. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a dog with behavior issues and truly a desire to work through them. I gave it four stars only because it did not address every problem my dog had.

So many of us adopt a dog and then find out that he/she is aggressive toward other dogs while out walking. I appreciated learning the word "reactive" because it was so apt. This book should be in the hands of everyone who adopts a dog, particularly an adult dog from a shelter. I figured out how to manage without the book but loved reading Brown's book as a check on how well I handled my dog's spontaneous eruptions whenever he spotted another canine anywhere near. I wish I had read this book at the time I most needed it. My 50 pound ruffian still erupts when another dog gets in his face, but now I know what to do. This is a slim easy-to-read manual that gets right to the heart of the problem, explains it, and tells you what to do. And it works.

I read "Scaredy Dog" feeling overwhelmed with my newly adopted reactive dog. The book clearly explained what was going on with my dog, and the step-by-step way I needed to work with her to overcome her reactive behavior. I was very pleased with the common-sense approach and would recommend this book to anyone struggling with a reactive or aggressive dog. I would also recommend "On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas. It helped to explain what kind of signals I was sending my dog when she reacted to other dogs, and how to send the correct signals to calm down the situation.

Excellent for anyone who has a saltwater fish tank. I've had fish tanks for 20 years and wish I had this resource to let me know in advance what requirements certain fish, corals and invertebrates have as far as size of tank, salinity, etc...which corals/invertebrates are easy to keep and which require way more than I could hope to provide. This is a must have.

I was expecting a book about the care, feeding, breeding and perhaps some history on the various horse breeds, and I was expecting photos. The care feeding and breeding information is there, but not much on the breeds, and what VERY FEW photos or drawings are included are ALL in black and white. The ONLY color picture is on the cover. This is probably why they don't let you see much from the Look Inside because people might not buy this book after they got to flip through it. I believe the information is helpful but it is sorely lacking in illustrations. We will keep it, but I would not reccomend it to anyone unless they are looking for a dry college text, or possibly an informational reference. It isn't a "fun" book by any means. My family is dissapointed.

I used this book for an animal science class in college. I'm quite familiar with horses, but never the less, this book is definitely recommended for most anyone to have around as a basic horse book. For new horseback riders or owners, I'd definitely recommended it. The author covers essentially every topic imaginable, from behavior, conformation, breeds, stabling, feed, teeth, gaits, handling, conditioning, grooming, illnesses, farriers, diseases, performance, breeding and genetics. Even though I was familiar with most of the material covered, it is extremely handy to have such a book on hand for things like a dental chart for aging, or the wight to energy ratios for various grains. Just a lot of stuff down in writing that you might not always remember off the top of your head.

However, the book can be overwhelming with information about every theroy out there about filtration, etc., with out really recommending the best approach/technology to maintaining reef systems. For a beginner, it was a lot of reading to get what I needed. Overall, I would buy it again.

This book is very good for the saltwater hobby. I know English language not so well, but I read this book with pleasure and to me almost all was clear without the dictionary.

Gotelli has done a great job with this book. He explains most things concisely as well as thoroughly. He not only mentions the concepts, but the people and events leading to the discovery of those concepts. This can be a rare thing in textbooks. The only complaint I have is that he doesn't always explain the derivations of his equations, he just wants us to trust him on them. Other than that, a great book on Ecology for its size.
