Empty CD (3 min twice - what a rip off!)
bad pictures, flat reading and not educational at all.
I'm giving a rating of zero.
Try the excellent stories by Arnold Lobel,
"Stories of Pirates" by Russell Punter, or Bear's series by Else Holmelund Minarik.

This book is definitely one of the classics of modern literature. The humor is infinitely sharper than that of all other children's literature. The illustrations remind one of the early days of Ted Degrazia. Buy this book and your life will be changed for the better.

A super-useful reference guide that goes well with HAWKS IN FLIGHT -- and actually I would probably look at this one first. Photographs and text both contain a lot of helpful information to assist in raptor identification -- though the "pitfalls" shots make it clear that not every bird will be identifiable.

Mileage obviously varies, but as a Californian I don't feel shortchanged by this book and have used it particularly for Sharpie/Cooper's differentiation.

The illustations make it much easier to identify hawks in the sky and on the ground. It will be a valuable companion on my bird walks in the Audubon and to ID the hawks soaring overhead and through the woods by my home.

Helpful even for a bird-challenged guy like me

Review Date: 2008-02-24
I'm a bird guy. I absolutely love birds, and the birds I love more than any others are hawks. When I die, I want to come back as a hawk.

The problem (if it is a problem) is that I'm no naturalist. I seem constitutionally incapable of identifying most birds. Get me past the typical visitors to my backyard feeders--the junkos, sparrows, wrens, cardinals, goldfinches, thrushes, humming birds, and occasional woodpecker--and I'm pretty lost.

But because I so love hawks, and because they've recently reappeared in great numbers in my neck of the woods (central PA), I thought I'd give Liguori's book a try.

I'm glad I did. The photographs are stunning--beautiful enough to please the eye, but at the same time crisp and detailed enough to serve as a guide for hawk-spotting. I found especially helpful Liguori's shots of hawks at different flight positions--soaring, gliding, stooping, hovering, and so on. Equally helpful are the charts he provides that compare body, wing and head shapes of different kinds of hawks, falcons, and eagles. Ditto on the migration charts.

There's only one thing Liguori's guidebook doesn't have that I wish it did: photographs of perched hawks. I see lots of hawks when I'm driving that are perched on tree branches and electric lines, and I still have difficulty identifying them: redtail? Swainson's? Cooper's? Hopefully, the next edition of Hawks from Every Angle will include the perch angle as well. (In all fairness to Liguori, however, his book is subtitled "How to Identify Raptors in Flight.")

It would also be convenient were the book a bit smaller in size. It's broadness makes it a little burdensome in the field. But it could well be that a smaller format would've meant less precise photographs. If that's the case, the tradeoff is a good one.

Extremely informative, with excellent photography

I though this was an excellent resource for identifying hawks in flight. The photos are very informative, and attractive as well. The guide is, in my opinion, very comprehensive and extremely well written.

If you're looking for a book that covers all the raptors that regularly occur in North America, forget it. A more honest title would've been 'Raptors of Northeastern Hawkwatch Sites.' Even then, northeastern hawkwatchers won't find Harris' Hawk in the book. The raptors Liguori does cover are done well, by and large, and I was particularly impressed with the treatments of both Harlan's Hawk and the Northern Harrier. But if you live in the West, as I do, you'll find the book less useful than the title suggests. Get yourself a Clark and Wheeler--it'll serve you much better. I'm looking forward to that frabjous day when hawkwatchers will escape their eastern bias, and discover that we have hawks in the West too.

The idea of the book is good. In actuality, it is poorly written and not very helpful...unless you know absolutely nothing about horses. If you buy a horse that is difficult to train and easily spooked, you should already know the grand majority of information found in this book. I bought it and read the first couple chapters then skimmed through the rest. In my opinion, it's tedious and excessively wordy. It merely advocates patiently exposing your horse to various objects so that in time you desensitive your horse to things that could potentially spook it. Most horsepeople already know this. I was hoping for something more revealing and innovative.

A history of Natural Horsemanship, but not a how-to book
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-13
I'm a recent horse owner, and I want to relate to and bond with my horse - because I believe that such bonding will improve our relationship. I was looking for specific techniques..for example, what specifically could I do to help my horse with three known problems - shying at running water - even if you reach into a trough and splash it, he shies. Also, panicking when tied, and panicking when taken to a rodeo area. Generally the horse, over 20 and a bit swaybacked, is not going to be ridden much, and he has scars from an ill fitting saddle. I'm mostly worried about ground handling.

Based on the title of this book, I was hoping that it would explain some techniques. It actually explains more techniques of so-called traditional horsemanship - as a negative exposition.

The book was well written in a conversational style. I'm actually convinced of the utility of natural horsemanship. After reading this book, were I in the horse business, I'd seriously want to reevaluate my methods to add more (or switch to) natural horsemanship, as I would believe that Natural horsemanship would create horses that would be easier to handle and would sell for more money or rent for more money or would be more likely to win me a ribbon...the point is that the book advocates for natural horsemanship both sensibly and effectively. My tendency, even before reading this book, was to handle my horse calmly, and with easy quiet methods, but this book laid out why clearly - and told me that I need to do even more things calmly.

What it did not explain was how. I still want to know how to do those things. I've had dog training books before, and they told me, "Hold your hands this way, correct the dog this way, offer praise when you see this cue, withhold praise when you see this cue." Sometimes you want more why from a book like that. This book was all why and no "how".

Maybe that is just not available - I have not found the book that does that for me yet. Maybe I did not recognize it. I still count this as a good book, worth reading. But not the book I needed at this point in my horsemanship education.

I've been negative, but I've still rated the book 4 stars. Excellent, well written. The only issue I have with it is the word "Explained" in the title. If it had been "Natural Horsemanship: The whys explained, from heart to hands" I would have rated the book five stars, despite my needs.

My beagle suffers from hip dysplasia and arthritis. The medication the vet prescribed helped, but my dog was still in a lot of pain. Out of desperation I decided to check out books on dog message and canine acupressure. The techniques outlined in this book worked miracles. My dog is now able to move with greater ease and with a lot less pain; in fact, at times he has the energy and stamina of a puppy again. I highly recommend this book for any one who can't sit back and watch a loved one suffer. It is a common sense, easy-to-understand approach to canine health.

This is a great book with wonderful massage therapy for dogs and it gets specific to the problems the dog is having. It is also very easy to read and understand. I have not read it all, but did read the parts I needed right away and it helped a lot. A dog who had not been walking for several weeks is now able to walk again. I won't say it is all due to the therapy, but it certainly did contribute a lot. Well worth having in your book collection if you own dogs.

Amelia's heart is in the right place. She truly adores animals, yet she can accent the emotions of communicating with them by intelligently and scientifically explaining how and why it happens.

This engaging and entertaining book will change the way you look at all animals - from your pets to the bugs that enter your home. It is heart-wrenching to realize the extent of the animals' emotions when you think how a good lot of them are treated by society in general.

Amelia cries out to the reader to join her in her mission to give a voice to those unheard. For anyone who wants to communicate with and understand animals, this battle cry will resonate with you and inspire you!

The cover gives the impression this book is all about animals, and yes it is, however there is much more beneath it's cover. This book gives an insight into the nature of consciousness and how to work with it. Practical, scientific, mystical; it covers aspects of quantum physics as well as practical exercises to expand the mind. Good book for life learning in general. Communication with all species would be improved through your experience with this book. It was much more than I was expecting.

Well I heard Amelia Kinkade on coast to coast with George Nory and had to pick up this book. It is very insightful! The exercises are provided right away and at first they didn't seem to work for me so I let my kids try it out and Hey! My 7 year old daughter was able to channel several of our animals that had died 2-3 years ago including our horse "Taboo". If she could do then so could we; within two weeks my wife and two children were getting really good at communicating with very type of animal you could think of (mostly living animals, lol). I am determined that this works so I will continue working at it until I can catch up with my wife and daughters.

Though (. . .) some of the examples being a bit odd for a preschooler, it's been one of the best books we ever bought for our son (then 2 yrs, now almost 4.) Our son absolutely adors Clifford and we use him (and the book) as a role model. When he starts, or does, something naughty, we'll ask, "Would Clifford do that?" Sounds kinda hokey, but it works.
I so highly recommend this book and have bought it for others as a gift.

I have learned so much about teaching a pup easy tricks with this book. My dog learned to ring the bell to go potty. It was easy for this dummy to pick up the concepts and pick the ones I was willing to commit to (cuz it does take practice). The pups love the attention and the stimulation. I wish my mom had a book like this to train me....Really..the book gives great tips on training tricks, but also gives information on understanding and managing dog behavior in general. I highly recommend it.

Sarah Hodgson does a great job of giving step-by-step instructions for training tricks, something that is harder to do than it looks! Everything in here is dog friendly and fun. I taught my dogs several of these tricks, and we made up a few new ones based on what we'd learned.

I wish that there was more content to the book, though. Perhaps 75% of it is filler. There are whole chapters on feeding, medical care and basics like sit, down and stay. Certainly, all of these topics are important, but they have only tangential relevance to trick training.

There are several other filler chapters about dog sports. Why fill 50-odd pages with brief overviews of skijoring, carting and flyball? Each of these sports has more than a few good books that readers can refer to if they're interested. Being a Border Collie owner in Texas, I have no use for info on the Iditarod!

I would much rather have a smaller volume filled with stuff that I want to read. All of this filler dilutes the book, and makes it harder to pick out the valuable info.

A good book

While I have to agree with other reviewers, in that if you are an intermediate or experienced dog trainer, you probably aren't going to find anything new here, I think this is a fabulous book for people who are new to dog training. The techniques are time-tested, and while I was familiar with many of them, I still enjoyed how the material was presented (very easy to read) and appreciated the book as a "refresher" and reminder on different approaches to try. I help teach beginning obedience and beginning agility classes, and have used some of these techniques to help people just starting out their training journey with their dog. One of the things I really liked about this book was the author's making a distinction between what is required for formal obedience and what is required to just have a well-mannered dog (the "heel" versus the "let's go" for example). I checked out this book from my library, but it's one I would not only buy for myself, but also would give to other dog owners as a gift.

Positive, but a bit difficult to apply

Review Date: 2007-07-21
I love that this book offers a completely positive training method. However, some of the training ideas seem like they would take a very long time to teach, and I don't know how "rock-solid" your dog would be afterward. I like that the author advocates teaching exercises in such a way that your dog cannot fail (for example, don't try making your dog SIT outside until he has done it 90% perfect in the house without distractions). I don't like that it does not offer many suggestions on what to do if you do happen to say "SIT" and your dog completely ignores you. And I truthfully didn't think it had very many effective ways to change "bad" behaviors. It would be great for your average dog without many bad habits who is willing to please and endlessly interested in treats.
The book was easy to read, but I actually got very annoyed with some of the long "funny" descriptions. A bit too much padding for me; get to the point.

Pretty Basic

Make your dog your best friend and he will do what you want. That is the basic premise of the book. The theory is reward focused, using treats, gentle pats, etc., to condition the dog to behave.

I have a "rescue dog" that was abused. He doesn't much like being touched. So far, he would rather go exploring that to mind me. The author suggests I am just not trying enough - possibly true. This book gave me a couple ideas, but hasn't been much help.
