"Tricks of the Trade" is definitely the best book I've read in a long time. This judge really knows her dogs and knows how to explain things in plain and simple terms for even the newest dog show enthusiast to enjoy. Even if you're not a dog show enthusiast, but are just looking to purchase a new puppy, you will benefit from reading this book first.

Good book, easy to read with plenty to learn for the beginner to the more advanced handler. This will be a book that I will read again, there is so much to get out of it that I expect to continue to pick up more each time I read it.

If you're interested in breeding quality dogs, you need this book!! This is a fantasic resource which includes everything from making unbiased decisions regarding your own litter right up to the Best In Show ring. Pat writes with an easy to read and often humerous style. I was surprised at how much I learnt from this book. I lent it to friends who all got a lot out of it. It's packed with " Tricks of the trade" (things that no one will ever tell you) and so much more. Again if you plan on breeding or even buying a show dog- read this first!!

I purchased this book based on reviews suggesting that this is the one book to get if you are a novice in the conformation ring. It is definitely not that. It is maybe a good book for a novice breeder who is intending to also show their first prospect - and who may be clueless about how to identify a good foundation stock puppy. Much of the book's substance is how to identify a prospect and then how to proceed as a breeder - like advertising, etc. Very little of the book helps a notive/intermediate handler actually do as the title suggests - from best intentions to best in show. It is not very helpful for people who already know how to get a good puppy, know the basics of stucture and how to do basic grooming and care, but would like to learn the basics of showing and the stepped up demands of grooming.

This book is really handy. It's nice that it's specific to the chihuahua breed--lots of information to help this new puppy owner differentiate between the general advice for all puppies and approaches best suited to my pup.

One of my favorite things about this book is the way it has really helpful information like diagrams of different tail positions and whether they indicate something is wrong. Great reference.

I found this book to be very easy and fun to read, plus extremely informative. It's a great book to buy BEFORE you get your Chihuahua because it puts everything into perspective. After I got my two Chihuahua puppies I carefully followed this book's instructions and my puppies immediately learned to be very obedient and it wasn't long before they were potty trained inside and outside the house. I highly recommend it!

I purchased this book for my mother, who loves birds. It is large and heavy. The audio has a good sound, and the controls let you jump from page to page.
One thing to know is that although each bird has multiple calls, this book only gives you one, supposedly the most common.

Not only is this the best addition to the Cat Who series, it reminds me so much of my own treasured one, Mr. Cheddar. No need to get a permit for renovations, this book towers above other cat-related mysteries! I am tempted to get another cat just to name it Mr. Yumyum and see if I too can teach it scrabble.

The Cat Who Lived High
Lillian Jackson Braun

James Qwilleran, is about to inherit over a million dollars, had an alcohol problem, is a retired crimes journalist at the age of fifty-two. When he travels to "Down Below," he and his Siamese cats, Yum-Yum and Koko, are caught in a murder in a building called the Casablanca.
Koko has "noble whiskers, aristocratic ears, a sensitive nose and impenetrable gaze. Koko could see the invisible, hear the inaudible, and sense the unknowable." Yum-Yum, his other Siamese, "was a charmer, who captivated Qwilleran with shameless wiles, reaching out her paw to touch his moustache while squeezing her eyes and purring throatily." Together they were a "handsome pair - fawn furred, with seal-brown extremities and mesmerizing, blue eyes."
Lillian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who Lived High is a work of art. Throughout this novel I felt puzzled, surprised, and amazed. I couldn't wait to find out the murderer and the weapon. I recommend this novel for anyone who loves cats.

My Favorite Cozy Mystery Series!

Review Date: 2006-09-28
In the 11th book in the Cat Who mystery series, James Qwilleran aka "Qwill", is feeling the familiar wanderlust grab him as the threat of the first large snowfall descends on Moose County (400 miles north of everywhere). When he is summoned by an old friend from "down below" to help restore the old Casablanca building in Junktown, he agrees to visit the old apartment building that has lost most of its previous shining glory.

Once he arrives, he realizes very quickly that the old building is not in great shape, and that the tenants are an eclectic mix. He meets elderly folks, young artists, and one eccentric building owner who is called the countess and never leaves her suite. Qwill is assigned the penthouse apartment on the 14th Floor, and when KoKo starts sniffing a stain on the rug, Qwill's natural curiosity is raised. He learns that there had been a murder in his temporary residence, and as he decides whether to finance the restoration of the Casablanca, he also probes into the mysterious death. With the help of his two irrepressible felines, KoKo and Yum Yum, the unlikely detective threesome saves countless lives from the clutches of an evil, greedy killer.

This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. I must say that I missed the setting of Moose County and its residents a bit in this installment, but found it refreshing to have Qwill meet some new people and explore the city. The characters in each book are what keep drawing many readers back...so if you are looking for a hardcore thriller, this would not be the series for you. However, if you are a fan of small town cozies, give this series a try. You might just find that you have become an avid "Cat Who" fan before the book is even finished.

This is a great series by my favorite author!

The first book in the series is called "The Cat who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!

Koko Plays Scrabble

Review Date: 2005-05-27
The eleventh book of this series finds Jim Qwilleran packing for a trip Down Below, much to the dismay and worry of his fellow residents of Moose County. One of the Three Weird Sisters, whom we met in a previous book, has called him up and urged him to look into saving an old building in Junktown that is about to be demolished. The cats are none too happy about the trip but Qwilleran is eager to check out his old stomping ground and also to avoid the Moose County winter.

He arrives back in Junktown to find an old rundown building that looks like a big refrigerator and as he carries the cats up to his apartment on the fourteenth floor the elevator stops. This time he is just as unhappy as the cats. He finds himself lodged in an elegant apartment that was recently the scene of a murder, a fact that Koko discovers. As usual in this series, Koko makes most of the discoveries and then spends a great deal of time trying to communicate his discoveries to Qwilleran. In this book Koko even takes up Scrabble to try and get his message across. One very nice thing about this book is that you don't get attached to the deceased because by the time the story starts, she is already dead. I'm still not over Iris Cobb's death.

For fans of the series this book will bring back some memorable characters from previous books including Mary Duckworth of Junktown and Robert Maus and Charlotte Roop of the Maus House. It is great fun to go back and see what has happened in these people's lives since we last encountered them and to find out what they are up to now. Prim and proper Charlotte for example, has a man and is a changed woman. There are also some neat new characters like Mrs. Tuttle, Mr. Rupert, the Countess and Isabelle Wilburton who gives Qwilleran a flashing he will never forget. The characters and the atmosphere are indeed the major part of the story because the mystery is even more submerged than normal, but the clues are there if you just pay attention to Koko.

This is not the best book in the series so far but it is very enjoyable. Unlike some other reviewers, I miss the folks in Moose County but it was a real pleasure to visit some old friends. It was a nice change of pace but I'm ready to get back to Pickax City.

Qwill and the cats go "down below" to the big city to try and save an historic building.

This book is my favorite of "The Cat Who..." series. It is really exciting. When Qwill, Koko, and Yum Yum move to the historic Casablanca apartment building their lives change. It is exciting. Qwill eats at a new restaurant every night. He meets many interesting people and investigates a murder that supposedly was already solved.

This book had a surprise beginning. Well written. Don't pass on this one!

Great book if you're going to use live plants
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-09
I got this from a local library. Its very good. The author sets up a single tank in the beginning and by the end of the book (week 12) it is fully established. The book is great for people who want to use real plants in their tank.

Theres a big section with various plants arranged into four categories: background plants, midground plants, foreground plants, and floating plants. There are full color pictures on every page. Various species are pictured and described. The fish section is arranged into three groups: first fish, second fish, and third fish. (First fish should be added to the tank first, second fish should be added second, etc.)

The only problem I had with this book is that there is too much emphasis on plants. Personally, I am more interested in animal life and less interested in the plant life. But if you're a beginner and you want to have real plants in your tank then you will love this book. If there was an updated, cheaper, paperback edition, I'd probably buy it.

My daughter (age 7) is never "keen" to read books. When she told me she liked the "Fly Guy" books she read in class - I went and bought the series! There are 5 books, total. The stories are silly and have a fun "gross" factor that most kids would enjoy. The books have a few chapters, but they are easy readers and so it allows the kids to have a sense of accomplishment (having read a "Chapter" book), while not being too labor-intensive. I would definitely recommend them for kids that need to be "encouraged" to read.

Review Date: 2008-08-03
This book does have some basic information--but that information is dangerously incomplete.

The thing I disliked the most about it was that the author makes a great effort--over and over--to stress that the reader is a mere beginner and knows nothing compared to experts like himself. His condescending tone is both insulting and annoying.

That wouldn't be so bad, if he then went on to educate us (the purpose, I foolishly assumed, for which this book was written). No such luck. In almost every section, we're told that we should leave the complex stuff to the experts. Case in point: He tells us the signs and symptoms of disease--but then refuses to tell us how to treat them. Instead, you're lectured that if you follow instructions you won't have any of those problems to begin with and that treating diseases is for experts. Uh...yeah. So, something does go wrong and one of your fish is being eaten alive by some parasite or fungus, you're supposed to just let it die rather than try to treat it. And then, I guess you're supposed to dump the entire tank and start over from scratch--though, of course, the book doesn't tell you how to rid an old tank and its contents of such nasties.

And, where some sections lack important information, others are pedantic, so full of minute detail that makes this book inclusion in a series of books called "Simple Guides" laughable. It felt to me that the author simply likes to demonstrate his vast knowledge to what he hopes will be a suitably awed and humbled audience.

I usually give away books I no longer want, but not this one. I've thrown three books in the trash my entire life. This was one of them.

This book could be a good tool if it was organized a little bit. I found it difficult to locate the information I was looking for from the index. If you have the time to read it as you would a novel, you might find useful information. If, like me, you need a guide to setting up a fresh-water aquarium and some info on fish and plants, it is a little too scattered in various sections that didn't make much sense to me...

This book is an outstanding and easy to read resource for anyone who is interested in setting up an aquarium. I read it cover to cover. I often refer to it as "my fish Bible"! I have lent this book to friends who were troubleshooting common aquarium problems, and they too have found it to be extremely useful.

The goal of the book is to give you a wealth of information BEFORE you buy your tank and your fish. It will help you to not make common mistakes. However, this book is a great resource or "refresher course" for those already interested and involved in the fishkeeping hobby.

This book is an overview on the main setup of a freshwater tank. While it does go into individual species a bit, you may want to get more specific and specialized books about the species you are interested in. The parts about individual species are not very in-depth.

Overall -- this is a fantastic resource, and your fish will thank you for getting this book!

Good luck, and happy fishkeeping!

I purchased this a couple years ago after having been out of the Aquarium hobby for several years and then deciding to get back in again. I found it to be very informative, building on what I learned 20-30 years ago and outlining many considerations that, today, are common knowledge in the hobby, but was unkown by the average aquarist of the 70s & 80s.

Very good book to read before you add fish to your new aquarium!

I laughed, I cried, and over again. The way they were able to let God lead them and take something so simple (a relationship with their pet) and it be turned into a devotional book that kept you wanting to read ahead and not read just that days devotion was a blessing! Its amazing what God can use if we are open to his plans. BIG Thank you to the authors for allowing God to use their abilities to captivate their readers... and even bigger thank you to God for creating our lovable, furry friends!! TWO big thumbs up :)

This book was given to me by my daughter at Christmas. In all the busy activity, I put it away and forgot about it. A couple months ago, I came across it, started reading it, and fell in love with it. It is hard not to read it straight through, but I have refrained from doing that in order to let the truths of each story penetrate my mind and heart. I have purchased 4 additional copies for friends and relatives who love dogs as much as I do, and I'm sure I will buy more in the future for the same reason. Animal lovers, especially dog lovers, will enjoy seeing how our beloved pets can reflect the love and faithfulness of God. Buy it. You will love it.

We recently lost a dog due to wobbler's syndrome and were extremely distraught. A thoughtful friend sent us a copy Four Paws from Heaven and this wonderful book provided much comfort and understanding to me and my wife. It is written in the form of short devotionals which have biblical references and practical self-help ideas to aid people grieving the loss of a pet. We thought so much of the book and the ideas expressed in it, that we purchased several copies and have given them to friends who have lost pets. A copy of this book and a memorial to a local animal shelter provide a perfect token of sympathy to anyone who has lost a four legged friend.

I had to purchase a Sciensaurus book for a college class and this book was an add on (buy two for less money). This is the book I use!

My 6th grade students were beginning their science fair projects and didn't have access to the internet. This is where I sent them for ideas.

The experiments are simple, the materials are minimal, the "science" is included but not primary, it is truly for those people who want their kids to experience the "hands-on" of science.

The index is set up in a chart so you can choose the topic~ earth, seasons, animals, rocks...across the top and then follow the column down to get all of the experiment options.

This book could keep a science teacher busy with experiments for an entire school year plus some!

Laid out clearly, with activities in various realms of knowledge that offer numerous variations so a parent could conceivably use this one book throughout a child's school years. I can't imagine a child not discovering the joys of science (broadly defined) when a parent introduces him or her to some of these delightful activities. The best thing about the book is that so many of the ideas don't require vast preparation, but can be done spur-of-the-moment.

Highly recommend this book for demos and Science Club

I used this book for Science Club for years and found it invaluable. I would highly recommend it for any teacher who runs Science Club or needs a supply of demos. Invaluable!

I've used this book for several years as a teacher, and found it gone from my bookshelf. It's great. It has everything. And it's written well and clearly. A very eclectic collection, but sound.

Creative, inexpensive ideas

I've used many of the activities. Either as a demo, as a "set" or for students to do. The materials needed for the activities are inexpensive. The ideas presented in the book are creative and allow you to spend more "brain power" on other things. It includes all areas of science, no matter what you teach, it can fit in. I've used it for 9th and 10th and don't feel it is too "elementary". It's worth the money.
