This is a beautiful, inspirational collection of real life stories of the love, lessons learned and spirtiual connections that people have with horses.
Each story is sensitively told in the own words of the horse's owner/or the person who has the story to tell.
The book's major focus is on the spirituality and sensitivity of the horse and just how deep that goes in these beautiful creatures.
A gentle plea for people to open their hearts and minds to the wisdom and love horses have to offer at all stages of their lives.
I found the book to be touching and refreshing.

A touching collection of essays on the bonds between horses and humans.

This book comprises a collection of 38 short essays, all submitted by different authors, about the special ways in which horses have impacted their lives. The essays are divided into four categories. "Love and Dreams" focuses on how a the love of horses can affect people; "Healing and Health" contains stories about lessons learned from equine health troubles, as well as ways in which horses have taught people about their own health; "Courage and Endurance" collects stories about equine heroes and horses that have inspired the people around them; and finally "Spiritual Connection and the Afterlife" explores the spiritual and religious experiences humans have had in connection with horses. After each essay the authors pose a question or two for the reader, designed to prompt reflection on how the story may relate to your own life. At the end of each section is a short, fictional "Ask Zeke" page, where the authors have posed a question to their friend's horse, Zeke, and then composed an reply as if Zeke himself were answering. The stories are a mixed bag of themes, and some impacted me more than others. If you aren't a particularly religious person, you may find a couple of the more supernaturally-oriented stories a little harder to relate to, but on the whole the essays presented here are heartfelt and touching. My favorite pieces were "Emily's Song," about a withdrawn, lonely young girl who finally comes out of her shell in order to help and even lonelier, more withdrawn pony, and "Miracles are Something to Believe In," written by a 12-year-old girl who's pony Lilly saved her life by, counter-intuitively enough, falling on her in a freak accident. The book is a quick and easy read, suitable for horse lovers of all ages, and well worth the time. "Angel Horses" would be a great gift for any horse lover, or a nice treat for yourself.

I loved this book!

My mom's cat came back

Review Date: 2008-10-07
A few months after reading this book, my mom's cat, who was born in her backyard and has lived his whole life there, wondered off while she had him on vacation at her beach house. She was distraught and so was I. For a month we tried to accept that we'd likely never see him again. I just couldn't give up though. Using the lessons in this book, I tried to help him find his way back to the house (while I was 1500 miles away). Almost a month to the day from when he started his beach adventure, my mom found him walking toward her house from the bushes across the street. Ever since then, whenever I visit, the cat that was nothing but aloof and skittish around me, cuddles with me whenever he can.

I've had other experiences with him and other animals in my life to validate my belief in the steps in this book, but none as powerful as that.

Oh, and I'm not one most people would consider a hippy, new-age, nut. I'm an engineer with a masters degree.

For some reason I can't keep this book on my shelf or in my home. Either I lend my latest copy to someone or else just give it to a friend or family member who "really needs it". Now it looks like I need to buy it again. It's just one of those books you can't wait to share. When I do have a copy it is a major reference book for me. Somehow Carol just makes it real. Even my dog would testify to that!

Carol Gurney is incredible. This book is amazing and I highly recommend it - as well as her courses. One understands that we can - and do - communicate with our animals, and they in turn, with us. Knowing and understanding this enriches our lives, as well as the lives of our animals in ways that are difficult to explain in words - although Carol has done a wonderful job in her book of explaining this. Read her book, go to her website and then go take some workshops with her. It could truly change your life - for the better.

The book completely changed the way I will forever look upon my pets! It changed the way I think about people!
Read it, attempt to perform the lessons within it's pages and then realize your pets are not in your life for nothing. They are your guardian angels... Read it IF you are a lover of pets and animals.

What a great read! How many times have you said to your pet, "Why are you looking at me like that? I know you're trying to tell me something, but I can't figure out what!" After reading Carol Gurney's gook, I find that it is easy to tap in to that look and hear the message that my dog is trying to tell me. Animals are so connected with us on such a deep level, and yet we must seem oblivious to them! As Carol said, "If I can do it, anybody can!" I have shared this book with friends and they are as blown away as I was! I now feel I have richer, closer relationships with my dog and horse than I ever imagined was possible. In fact, when I lunge my horse, sometimes all I have to do is think the word trot, walk or canter and picture it and she just automatically responds as if I have said it out loud. Wow! I think too many animals are ignored on this level - they are just waiting to be heard! This is the best animal commnication book I have seen. Set aside your skepticism and this book will open your life to a whole new layer of communication and connection with your pet.

I grew up with the Peterson Field Guides and still love them. I think I used to fall asleep reading this guide to beetles (okay, weird, I know). I like the pictures better in some other guides but I still think the Peterson guides are the best for learning. This book has a nice guide to beetle structure and development as well as collecting. What I really like about the book are the notes: other guides give names, locations, and possibly the insects' size but these guides really give you a mini-education. Almost every family has a full page or so of notes concerning identification, location, collecting tips, and behavior. I don't think this can be beat for a general introduction the beetles.

Illustrations and descriptions.

This field guide will be very useful with it's diagrams and other study tools about the world of insects. I'm glad I added this book to my library.
The black & white pictures are very detailed as well as the color illustrations.
I recommend this Peterson Field Guide to other beetle enthusiasts.

This book is a spendid combination of text and pictures that is at once informative and inspiring. The text clearly points out critical information about North America's beetle families and specific examples of each, while maintaining brevity and readability for any backyard naturalist. The pictures, both b&w (predominantly) and colour, very nicely further the text by showing the overall appearance of major types of beetles, and by pointing out important features for the identification of each.
The book effectively accomplishes what any field guide sets out to do: quick and accurate in-field identification of major beetle families, with further examples of the most common subfamilies. This book would make an excellent addition to any home or classroom where interest in insects, and beetles in particular, exists.
For those wanting to identify Canadian/US beetles beyond backyard interest, consider Arnett's AMERICAN BEETLES.

My parrot loves it too!

Review Date: 2008-09-28
I bought this book especially as a way to interact with my pet parrot. She loves hearing bird calls coming from the various shows on TV and I thought this book would be perfect to entertain her with.
The song panel is easy to operate, has volume control, and even has an option of playing in "All" mode, so that you only have to press the button once (it's right before song #1, or at the end of song #200), and it will automatically play all the bird calls, one after another, for ten minutes or so on it's own.
My bird sits on the book and just listens to the different bird calls with amazement. I'm noticing the more I play it, the more she enjoys it. It's as good as I thought it'd be for entertaining her!
The only thing I could say that I wish were better about the book is that if it had more parrot species calls. It only has about two or three out of the two hundred.

It's also a great learning tool for us humans too, to hear these different bird calls and read about the birds who make them.

I can't wait to get another one of the books in this series to hear even more bird calls and enjoy them with my parrot!

So fun!

The odd focus of the authors makes this the least useful of the books I have on Havanese. The authors are somewhat obsessed with their point of view on health and the Havanese, and while I fully support breeding for health, their conclusions lack credible proof.

On the other hand, their are some useful bits in the book, so I can't say it is a total waste. As the number of books on this breed is limited, I suppose this book is worth reading.

One book I heartily recommend though is The Joyous Havanese, as I find it both more thoughtful and entertaining and repeatedly useful. The Joyous Havanese

This book is full of interesting and useful information about a wonderful breed of dog. The Havanese is definitely a breed apart and this book covers all of the points needed by an owner, or new owner, of this breed. The author gives excellent information on the temperment and quirks of this little ball of fluff. She also goes into a great deal on the health issues that can affect the Havanese. I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone interested in becoming the mommy or daddy of a Havanese!

I loved this book. We had a poodle before and I thought I knew all about picky eaters, but I had never seen a dog as picky as my little Havanese. He would love one thing one day (like steak - NEVER dogfood !) and the next day not touch it. The same goes for hamburger, lamb, hotdogs etc. etc. I really worried about it until I read this book and it said that is typical of Havanese. We adore our dog. He is the most affectionate dog we have ever had.

I got this book to help me identify the snakes we sometimes have in our back yard and pond. It did a good job helping to identify the snakes. When I wanted more detail, I went on the internet and I knew exactly which snake I was researching. It is a good general book that teaches you the basics. It is small, so it is convenient to carry while walking or hiking.

Our local Audubon chapter has also been providing it to local schools, teachers and children for many years. This is a great book to add to any horseman's collection as it is always best to read more than one person's view on horses. The book was an easy read following Rick on his adventure in to the equine world. Rick adds valuable info and insights gleened from other notable horsemen/authors. The Tips and summations after each chapter are a wonderful addition thus creating a quick reference for future questions or slips of memory. I enjoyed reading the book and as with every author I have read, I learned a few things. Since there are no true "experts" in the horse world - meaning there is no one person that knows everything about horses - I have added this book to my "keep" pile (which hubby says is getting out of hand, but what does a golfer know about needing books on horses!!). Perhaps one day, I will have enough info collected that will culminate in a library that will have ALL the info on horses - if I live that long.

A must read for the horse owner

This book while documenting Rick's quest for knowledge really reflects the journey we must all take to become partners with the equines in our lives. It is not an easy path because we must not only be physically aware but psychologically in tune with our bodies as well as our horse's. In gaining the trust of these creatures we must also give trust so we can travel together and enjoy exploring the world together. I see more when riding my horse than when walking alone because I am viewing through his eyes and ears and am made aware of flora and fauna that would be invisible otherwise.I really enjoyed this book and having been a rider for over fifty years on hundreds of horses,I recommend it.

A must for anyone who loves and enjoys riding horses.

This is an excellent quick guide to help you learning more about salt water fishes. It not only helps you deciding what fishes you want next but is also a very helpful guide to carry when shopping for new fishes. You can easily identify fishes that you don't know, with a scale with 1 to 5 on how hard it is to have it at home and compatibility with other fishes and invertebrates.

The highlight of this book, in my opinion, is showing pictures of Angelfishes when they are both young and adults, as their pattern change completely.

I almost didn't get this book, when I was shopping on line, BUT I am soooo glad that I did. I found it very helpful for working with my dog. This is the first book that I got that said that sometime shy dogs are just born that way. I was such a relieve. I have tried many things to help bring her out of her shell, but was feeling like somehow I was failing her. The book gives practical examples and advice on how to handle situations and lots of patience is needed. To notice the small victories. It also had stories of how other shy dogs had overcome their shyness and do things that you want for your dog. I really recommend this book. If gives lots of suggestions and hope. I just recently acquired a somewhat shy mini-dachshund and needed instruction on how to assist him in overcoming his apprehensions. Various sources on line recommended this book. I bought it, as well "Help for Your Shy Dog" by Nicole Wilde. This Deborah Wood book was a complete waste of time - no details were included on how I should proceed with my dog on anything, only just what amounted to a bunch of cheerleading (e.g., "with patience even you can do it!"). The Nicole Wilde Book, however, contains all the protocols you need to follow for virtually any kind of fear a dog might have. I highly recommend "Help for Your Shy Dog" for anyone with a shy dog, or any kind of dog for that matter. After reading Nicole Wilde's book, I am now making huge progress with my dog's apprehensions, and feel well equipped to deal with any fear that may come up in the future. The Deborah Wood book is going in the trash.
