This was a great book and what made it even better was that it included resources at the end so you could get involved. The book is well written, draws you in and makes you feel like a part of each rescue and tragedy. I plan on reading this again and again. It gives you hope that one person can make a difference one or two dogs at a time

I loved this book! I found it very inspirational and motivational. Thanks to people like Randi, I have the most amazing little rescue dog and I love reading about other successful rescues as well. As a dog lover who also sometimes volunteers for dog rescue in the Bay Area, I was touched by Randi's stories. I also love her spiritual approach, of searching for divine order in a chaotic world. The book has inspired me to begin volunteering/fostering for rescue again, and to give dogs that might appear unreachable a second chance.

A current trend in books about dogs is that the dog(s) serve as a back drop for the author to talk about himself or herself. This book is not one of those books. And Randi Berger does a wonderful job telling the dogs' amazing stories.

I truly enjoyed reading this book about troubled dogs who are rehabilitated by Ms. Berger and end up as wonderful pets.

Berger's stories of her years managing her full-time dog rescue organization are not only entertaining, but inspiring and sometimes painful to read. This is real-life in the dog-rescue world. Very hard work. You really get a sense of the committment and the endless effort it takes to run a successful rescue organization. Berger laces her book with humor, wit, and lots of great dog photos so you can really get a feel for each of the dog characters she writes about. I recommend this book to ANY dog lover...but especially to those who've rescued a dog from the street, a shelter, or a bad situation. You will enjoy this book. A must-have for your dog library!

This is a most enjoyable book and the first I have read to tell how someone begins a dog rescue group. I got my dog from one and have wanted to know more about these groups. The writer should continue to tell her story of dog rescue and of other such groups as well. Her writing style is entertaining and informative.

As a work of scholarship whose purpose is to provide an understanding of the the "...politics of industrial pollution", this book is nearly useless. The main problems are: 1) undocumented assertions are made in every chapter, 2) terms which are critical to the book, such as "toxic" and "high cancer death rate", are never defined, and 3) the treatment is anachronistic throughout. It is difficult to believe that authors who make the statement, "...new classes of disease and damage to the body that are too subtle to even measure" (p. 296) actually know anything about the subject.

I read this book about 2 years ago after my manager gave it to me. It is an excellent, non-sensationalized, review of historical actions of large corporations which compromised the public health of our citizens. It is well supported by cited references. A must read for occupational health professionals who are working to protect employees against little known hazards.

This is an extraordinary book. Unlike other books that address the corruption of industry, this book has the documents and information that you really need. Few stories of environmental duplicity ever provide this kind of detail and data.

But most importantly, it read like a detective story, which, in fact, it is! Bill Moyers is absolutely correct in his cover blurb! What a joy to read.

"Lawsuits... against some of the largest chemical and petrochemical companies in the world have led to the discovery of documents that show lying, manipulation of government officials, and secrecy as tools used by industry to protect its product. What emerges is a history of deceit that is strikingly similar to that of the asbestos and tobacco industries." [This and all quotes from my review are from Deceit and Denial]

Deceit and Denial is an exceptionally well researched book that lays bare the astounding extent of American corporate and political malfeasance with regard to industrial pollution in the 20th century, specifically focusing on the lead, chemical, and plastics industries. The authors' use of hitherto unseen primary source documents from corporate archives to make their case adds tremendous weight to the argument that industrial pollution damages not only people's physical health and the environment in which they live but also undermines our country's social and democratic institutions.

Deceit and Denial eloquently and thoroughly expounds on the proposition that corporate self-regulation is dangerous and that "when it comes to public health, the society has a right to insist that the community's interests come before the shareholders' profits." The reader is also reminded of a notion that has fallen by the wayside in post-9/11 America: it is "absolutely essential to have as much openness and free access to information as possible."

These ideas may not be new but you would be mistaken in thinking that this book is the product of a radical left-wing or environmentalist agenda. This is scholarly research of the first order. Deceit and Denial succeeds in being not only a damning indictment of past corporate machinations and political complicity but a lucid exposition of the critical issues that industry and our nation currently face in the 21st century.

i think this is perfect book to get comprehensive knowledge for NAVLE exams,NBVME list of diseases are best discussed in this book i strongly recomend foriegn vets to read this book.

A very handy tome of immense value in the stress situation for quick information as well as for in depth study to bone up on latest techniques and those possibly a bit rusty. I can strongly recommend this, it is excellent value. I would want a more updated model though and hope for a new edition soon--I hope the authors are reading this?

A book which explores the small animal Veterinary field, uses simple and clear explainations to many different issues in that field. As a student for Veterinary Medicine in the clinical stage, I open the book very often. the book is very readable and friendly for students which their first language is other than English (unlike many others we all know).

You must have it !!!

After using many different references for the first half of my internship, this is the book I most often reach for now. The information is as user friendly as the 5 Minute Consult (an improvement here), and more up to date. There are many, many helpful tables and figures,and the addition of a formulary in the back is welcome. While no book can provide all the answers, I find 90% of them in here. My only complaint is the coverage of emergency care could be tweaked. In critical care situations, when I need information regarding a particular emergency in a hurry, this is not the book I turn to first.

I purchased this for my two year old daughter and she has really enjoyed it. I love reading it as well since I am a big "Mitford" fan. What a sweet gentle story!

This is a very sweet story. Anyone who has read any of the Mitford series has wondered exactly what a story by Cynthia Coopersmith would be like. This story, along with its illustrations, are exactly what she sould produce. It's not just a children's picture book. The simple and soothing story is for all ages.

Cute illustrations. Story about killing mice was not appealing to my children. They didn't like the book.

This is a wonderful book for children ages 6-9. Being a big Mitford Fan, I'm glad to see Cynthia Coppersmith's fictional "Violet the cat series" come to real life!

This is a gentle story, beautifully illustrated, about growing up and finding the place one is meant to be. The story of the white kitten Violet and her siblings teaches us that we each have special talents and gifts, and although it may take some trial and error, if we keep seeking, we will find the perfect place to use them. Talking with young children about the story will provide parents opportunities to help them discover their unique gifts/talents/skills, to build confidence, and to set them on that lifelong path of seeking. Plus, it's an adorable story!

If you own and work horses, this book is a must and at a great price.

I've learned a lot from this great book. The user comment made before mine is an excellent review. Big beautiful pictures, clear understandable information, and plently of down-to-earth lessons. Craig has taught me unforgetable things on my relationship with any horse I come to know and work with. GREAT BOOK.

This review comes from a novice rider. I have been taking weekly lessons for a little over a year -- in English riding. Thus, I think it says something for this book that I read it cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it is western focused.

The book begins by teaching you about horse psychology, horseman psychology, and equipement, then offers advice on selecting a horse, followed by several chapters of advice on riding. After this, about half way through the book, it begins to teach training methods, and chapter by chapter carries you from first putting a halter on the horse all the way through advanced maneuvers and trailer loading.

Each chapter contains many sidebars with extra hints and tips, explanations of the purpose of some of the techniques, and personal anecdotes that reinforce the lessons and demonstrate the importance of them.

If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, then this book contains several extra volumes withing its pages. It is filled with large, color, quality pictures that clearly show the author himself doing the things he teaches.

Craig Cameron teaches natural horsemanship. You won't find advice on striking your horse in this book. One of his mottos is to make "the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard," not painful.

When I do venture into western riding, I will be much better prepared for it by having read this book. I highly recommend it to riders of any discipline, at any level of training. Even if you never ride western and never train a horse of your own, you will benefit from reading this book.

This is a great book that will help improve the horsemanship skills of anyone willing to spend a little time and effort. The text is plain and simple . . . its more like having a conversation with Craig than reading a school book! The ample illustrations really help with understanding the concepts and techniques the author has developed. I'm very happy that I have my copy.

I found the book compelling and I believe factual. I am sorry that this sacrefice did not stop another incident, the Thirty Mile Fire, where more were sacreficed. I was a fireman for a number of years and felt the power of an inferno that blistered my hands through my gloves but never faced anything like this. These are heros and special people who would trust and risk their lives to protect life and property of others. Circumstances through management decisions such as first not attempting to put the fire out when it was still not serious. I have climbed all over those mountains and it could have been done. Bad leadership decisions have taken thousands and thousands and continue to take more and more of our finest and brightest. When will they ever learn?

I found this book like so many others hard to put down. The author is very descriptive but very easy to read. I like this book because it is written so anyone can easily follow the events and description. I like books that are straight and to the point without all the fluff. This book has no fluff, just a good investigation into a difficult series of events.

Norman Maclean's son does an okay job of telling the tragic story. Many of the events described are fragmented making the story jagged in places, but overall he gets the point across. Dedicated, hard working folks making the ultimate sacrifice. There are so many names tossed in and out of this book that you'll find yourself flipping back and forth trying to piece it together. John could have done a better job transitioning between events and making a stronger connection to the people in the book.

You'd like to think that this should never happen to firefighters, but the sad reality is that it does because it is dangerous work. As a firefighter, I found that John painted a very vivid picture of the events: 'The blood pounding in your head as you race up the hill', the lack of sleep the jumpers endure from their overnight 'coyote' the first night, etc. draws the reader's senses into the story for a gripping journey.

It's unfortunate to learn in Maclean's book that the crosses on Mann Gulch were nearly replaced with obelisks. Looking at the recent pictures of the Mann Gulch crosses in other sources - they appear at least to me that they are still in good shape. Today, the obelisks stand right beside the Mann Gulch crosses. Obelisks? What does that even signify? The crosses placed on Mann Gulch were how the 13 jumpers were first honored - let the original memorials stay! If this is about religion and separation of church and state, then I am totally disheartened to learn that smokejumping, one of the last decent traditions in our American work history, has gone PC. I hope that's not the case.

Anyway, this book should be read by all firefighters and those considering the job, especially the overhead.

It started with dry lightning storm starting 40 new fires in the Grand Junction District with 5000 lightning strikes on Storm King Mountain before the fire and a total of 9,000 strikes total.

The BLM case is that other fires threatening homes required resource immediately and the South Canyon fire was not number one on the priority list; furthermore, BLM relied on County Helicopter support and availability from Western Slope Fire Coordination Center. The author tells about a tactic used by Blume where Blume would travel to Western Slope Fire Coordination Center identified which helicopters were on the pad, return to office, and place a call for the resource; the resource could not be denyed; games people play. What was needed to prevent such games was a join network of State and Fed with a central command hierarchy that could give stronger coordination during a crisis.

Therefore, it is logically that criticism would surface directing its anger at unclear procedures between state and federal agencies delayed deployment and usage of firefighting resources like failure to by the state too put out the fire because it had not cross its zone. Furthermore, criticism centers on these delays causing the small Storm King fire to expand from 30 acres to 50 acres to a crisis. When the smoke jumpers arrived at the fire scene they were startled at the size of the fire, however their "can do" attitude may have contributed to this underestimation of the problem. Brains are critical to fire survival and not just brawn. Smoke jumper could not be expected to back down from their jobs. Therefore, management must be held accountable for the disaster and their failure to recognized a crisis emerging and don't point the finger at the smoke jumpers. The reviewing commission says, "Twelve of the 18 Watch Out Situations were not recognized, or proper action was not taken" indicating that the firefighting crew was careless.

The smoke jumpers, BLM/Forrest service misjudgment could have been avoided by putting out the fire sooner. Immediate plane drops of retardant and helicopter support could have contributed significantly. Red mud retard was delivered by plane too late. The difficult wind currents made flyovers difficult caused by sudden drops in air pressure threatening to put the plane wing into the mountain.

Lack of immediate support delayed blue hat crews from arriving at the fire sight. Good black areas were too far from the fighting crews and super human efforts by the blue hats was not enough; the second group were able to power out to I-70 into safety.

"On July of 1994 had been a drought year and a time of low humidity. The fuels were extremely dry and susceptible to rapid and explosive spread. None of the groups recognized the dense oak spread as a potential for a blowup. A blow up is the perfect combination of fuel, high winds, and specific terrain topology. Cucou was monitoring the weather conditions on July 6: he predicted a cold front with winds of 45 mph passing through the fire zone around 3:30-4:00 pm. The weather information came in advance but did not trigger and evacuation. "A major blowup did occur on July 6 beginning at 4:00 p.m. Maximum rates of spread of 18 mph and flames as high as 200 to 300 feet made escape by firefighters extremely difficult."

On the west side the fire crossed the original fireline so BLM/Forest service started a second fireline further downhill on the east side of the ridge.

"At 3:20 p.m. a dry cold front moved into the fire area. As winds and fire activity increased, the fire made several rapid runs with 100-flame lengths within the existing burn. At 4:00 p.m. the fire crossed the bottom of the west drainage and spread up the drainage on the west side. It soon spotted back across the drainage to the east side beneath the firefighters and moved onto steep slopes and into dense, highly flammable Gambel oak. Within seconds a wall of flame raced up the hill toward the firefighters on the west flank fireline. Failing to outrun the flames, 12 firefighters perished. Two helitack crew-members on top of the ridge also died when they tried to outrun the fire to the northwest. The remaining 35 firefighters survived by escaping out the east drainage or seeking a safety area and deploying their fire shelters."

The smoke jumper elite were burned, a forbidden taboo; their story shows their incredible determination to survive; they lived their on the edge and lives with each other represented a close family bonds; the Storm King blowup was similar to the Mann Gulch blowup and no correlation translated to warn against a repeat occurrence; McKay was a hero; the escape routes were too long and steep with the worst part of the path achieving a 55 degree incline as the blue hat pace dropped to 1 per hour as the fire increased its velocity to 5 miles per hour; "the Prineville Interagency Hotshot Crew (out-of state-blue hats) was not briefed on local conditions, fuels, or fire weather forecasts before being sent to the South Canyon fire."; carry tools and equipment on the escape route reduced the pace and every second made the difference between reaching the ridge and death.

The book is captivating.

Great reporting, decent literature although granted, few of us will ever match his father.
I know/knew many of the principals on this stage and what struck me was how well he captured them. Over and over, I'd read of another friend and easily picture them saying or doing what was in print, but now became very real.
I'm amazed by how much I missed after the official report and talking with some of those that were there. Mr. MacLean's book has rounded my education well. My oldest started fire fighting four years ago and I required reading of the report and this book so that he would understand the multiple levels that mistakes are made at.
To those that complain about faultfinding; how much fault has been found with "Fire on the Mountain"? Have there been any lawsuits, settlements or retractions? If none, then please list flaws so we can judge the validity of disputed items.
The only major flaw I saw in this book was failure to deal aggressively with the two jumpers who were not carrying fire shelters. Should have been at least a few pages devoted to that.
There is a huge reason for this book. The failing of management to report on and effectively deal with management's errors. This book fills part of that void.
Mr. MacLean, would you please do a book on Los Alamos and the Cerro Grande Fire? I was there for a couple weeks. The mistakes of the prescribed burn that got away would only be an appetizer to leads us to the corruption/incompetence of the Lab. That Lab is a far more important issue than wildland fire safety.
Whatever else, thank you for this book.

I have read several books on Reef Aquariums and this book is by far the best yet. I understood all that was being written, as a beginner just learing about Reef Aquariums and enjoyed the beautiful photos as well. I feel the book as given me a much better understanding of how to set up and maintain a healthy and beautiful aquarium.

i am expecting the book to be a good one giving the inside i want to living filtration and a completely natural aquarium with very little artificial filtration help! i can not say yet if it will meet my expectances since i have order the book more than 2 months ago and i am still waiting for it....

Well written and a good book to read for general information.

This is a very good book for those wishing to begin reef aquariums. Some of it is theory and some is opinions. Other sections are a little deep for the common person but overall it is a solid basis for those wishing to begin reep keeping. Reading this book should go a long ways to being successful keeping the different types of reefs.l

Recently I've read several books pertaining to the tropical marine hobby and after reading this book by Mr. Tullock I rate it an eleven out of ten. Very informative, easy to digest, excellent format, and one to refer to in the future. A quality production by the publisher. Thank you Mr. Tullock!

Mr. Putter and his cat, Tabby, are just as nice as nice can be. Certainly, they are the best of neighbors for Mrs. Teaberry when the poor lady injures her foot. Since she can't walk, somebody has to walk Zeke, her beloved bulldog.

Of course, Zeke seems to be the perfect little angel, but sometimes first impressions are not correct. When Mr. Putter and Tabby become his temporary custodians, the truth all comes out, and it's time for Mr. Putter and Tabby to go on one wile ride with Zeke!

Mr. Putter offers all kinds of bribes to the out-of-control Zeke, including ice cream, a carnival and a trip to the zoo! Certainly, those treats would have tamed the wildest child, but not this bull-headed bulldog!

The fabulous laughs here are reinforced by humorous illustrations, every bit as wonderful as the writing!

Mr Putter & his cat companion, Tabby, do the right thing by volunteering to walk the neighbor's dog when the neighbor is injured. The dog takes total advantage of novices & runs them ragged the 1st few days. Mr Putter stoops to bribery to get the dog to behave better the rest of the time. The neighbor never knows the whole story. My guess is Mr Putter & Tabby think twice before offering to help that way again! My 7 1/2 yr old daughter & I have been reading together for yrs & are devotees of Cynthia Rylant's work. We have only been reading the early reader Mr Putter & Tabby series for the last yr. It has the wonderful ability to appeal not only to the new reader mastering the skill, but also to the experienced reader, overseeing the learning process, or continuing to read to the child. This is a feat as many "early readers" captivate the early reader but put to sleep the overseeing adult!

Simple language and a hilarious storyline make this book perfect for the voracious or the reluctant reader. Mr. Putter and his cat tabby are a delightful pair, and their encounter with the neighbor's nightmare pooch will have kids laughing aloud. The accompanying illustrations only add to the text.

Perfect for children to read on their own, or with the help of a parent (because parents will find these stories equally charming).

I bought this book for my two year old son. We have a dog, and he started getting rough with her. He LOVES this book!!!! He always goes and gets it and wants us to read it to him. He loves the page with the animal sounds, and he learned to do them all. He has not hit the dog recently, but still tries to sit on her. But overall, I think this is an excellent choice, and very cute book!

My child has special needs. We had great luck with the hands are not for hitting book so when I saw this one I knew Diezle, our golden retriever would appreciate it ! Well it did not work out in his favor ! I am sorry to report that my son loved reading this book but was compelled to pull the dogs tail even more immediatly after reading the book, every time ! I think it is well written but perhaps not for ever childs mind. We have since donated the book to our school's library.

I'm not sure why, but I expected a little more from this book. The messages are there -- very basic stuff. Unfortunately, it didn't hold the attention for either of my toddlers. Cute graphics, though.

Great gift for families with pets. Many other books like this for toddlers.

Really nice book to teach little ones about their pets. It has a great section at the end with advice for parents.
