Goes beyond horsemanship

Review Date: 2008-09-29
This is one of the books I will be reading more than once. I have read a few books on horsemanship and frankly I ended up choking a bit on all the different techniques and advices. Mark Rashid has the ability to let the reader learn for himself and to show us that the horses hold great power as friends and teachers. The storytelling form makes it easy and entertaining to read but gives very little explicit guidlines to the practical work with horses. In stead it offers an opportunity to look into his own way of being with and learning from the horses.

I am not good at reviewing books, but I will say that if you had a six star rating instead of just five, I would definitely give it a six.
Anyone who is fond of horses or has ridden and/or worked with horses would love this book written by a totally likeable man who looks at training, riding, working and just being buddies from the horse's point of view. This book shows great understanding of the subject. Mark's writing is easy, compassionate, humorous and you just hate it when the book ends. From now on I will buy any book written by Mark Rashid. (TOLD you I was not good at writing reviews)!

Uncommonly Brilliantly Fabulous "MUST HAVE"

An internet search of images turned up several VERY intriguing still-lifes full of bright color swatches, lacy textures, and over-lapping objects in a style like absolutely no other artist on earth. Dang! Who's work IS this? Hmmmm! Shirley Trevena. Dig deeper and a plethora of utterly brilliant images, each one as exciting as the last - and I'm thinking, "I have GOT to learn more about this woman! Bought both of her books AND her DVD, and if she ever puts out anything else, I'll get that, too. Most artists are creative, but in usually in a rather traditional, safe sense. Not Trevena. Her work reflects both her knowledge of color and how it's supposed to work, of composition, shapes, lines --- all the elements of the accomplished artist, and then she breaks all the rules and STILL makes it work! Perhaps she has some intuitive, mystical sense about color choice, about playing pale colors against daring and dark hues, and expecially about composition. I don't know. But, if I could collect only one artist's work, I would fill my house with Trevena's. Taking risks, being outside-of-the-box creative is exactly what she has done - inspiring you to do the same. I have well over 100 art books now. Hers are my absolute favorites - the ones from which I've learned the most about taking risks, and feeling giddy with excitement when I'm able to take risks with my own paintings.

I love this book and have read it from cover to cover. Shirley Trevena's paintings are thrilling to look at, the text is very readible and the layout keeps you turning the pages. I have been painting watercolours of flowers and still life for many years but Shirley Trevena shows me new ways to forge ahead, and fun ways to overcome some of the obstacles I have been facing in my work. Congratulations also to Albert Jackson and the other photographers for a truly excellent book. I look forward to the other book by Trevena.

Although the title of the book refers to watercolour painting only, artists using other mediums will get inspiration as well.

Shirley Travena dives into the medium with enthusiasm (no tepid, sepia palette here!) incorporating watercolour with mixed media (including of all things, oil pastels and collage) using imagination, flair and ingenuity. The illustrations are vibrant; a feast for the eyes. While tonal values, composition, alignment and other basics are covered, they are presented in an innovative way. No boring lectures here.

The author shows a delightful candour - admitting how hesitant she was when first starting - and even daring to show some of her early works, on which she has since improved. But then she provides creative ways of overcoming problems, including the initial, daunting feeling of confronting a blank piece of paper or canvas. In addition to trouble-shooting, there are numerous ideas for achieving great effects with very simple techniques. Her use of masking tape to create different planes, for example, is very creative.

This is an experienced artist who nevertheless insists there is no 'right' way to create pictures, which is borne out by such headings as "Daring combinations" and "If a picture needs something, feel free to invent it." Whatever medium or style you use, doing some of the experiments and explorations in this book could well give a new lease of life to your paintings, as well as provide inspiration for new works of art.

More than a cut above.

This is a wonderful book for any artist wanting to expand their horizons in w/c. The author is generous in giving concrete examples and techniques and also gives a step by step explanation as to how she created one of her paintings. As an art teacher I find this an exceptionally good book.

Shiloh Season is a really great book. It is the sequal to the Newbery Medal winner Shiloh. So it contiues with Marty and his dog Shiloh who he got from a mean grumpy man named Judd Travers. Judd has started drinking and that is causing problems with him and Marty. For example Judd is blaming everything that happens to him on Marty. Will Judd and Marty ever become friends? Well to find out you should read this book!

The novel Shiloh Season is an excitant novel by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Shiloh Season is a good book.
In the narrative the characters were unbelievable. Marty and Shiloh are my favorite characters. Judd was mean at beginning at the end Judd was a nice guy. Phyllis Naylor wrote such an enchanting novel. She should rite another Shiloh story.
My favorite scenes in this novel is when Shiloh licked Judd's hand. If I would not change in I would not because Shiloh Season is a good book.
I learned from this novel that you should not people. I would recommend this book for my friends because I is a good book.

Good Sequel, Some Reservations

Shiloh Season is the second book in the Shiloh Trilogy. In this ongoing saga, 11-year-old Marty must face some of the consequences of past decisions, particularly the secret of how he managed to "buy" his beagle Shiloh from Judd Travers, his previous owner. Just when we thought Marty's fears about Shiloh's well-being were over, Judd begins to drink heavily and is displaying erratic behavior which causes Marty to once again fear for Shiloh's safety, as well as his own. Marty faces some difficult decisions again, as well as showing maturity as he wrestles with needing to protect Shiloh and wanting to find out if it's possible to teach kindness to someone who has never known it.

While this sequel was very enjoyable, it somewhat lacked the page-turning intensity of its predecessor. In Shiloh, Naylor deftly managed to make all the characters alive and a meaningful addition to the book, but Shiloh Season didn't quite draw me in as well and the scenes with Shiloh himself almost seem superfluous. If you are a fan of Marty and Shiloh, then you will most likely enjoy this next part of the story. If you haven't read the first book, I would highly recommend reading it first and become a fan before reading this second book.

Positive Elements: Though Marty's willingness to take risks in reaching out to Judd Travers stem from his desire to keep Shiloh safe, he learns compassion in the process and then attempts to teach it to Judd himself. Again, this book demonstrates to us an excellent work ethic and devotion to family. Marty may not always know what the right thing to do is, but his desire to do the right thing is refreshing.

Negative Elements: As in the first book, there are scenes which may frighten or disturb some children, including the use of firearms. One of the main themes of the book deals with abusing alcohol, and I edited out some language as I read this book aloud to my children.

I birded several Mexico places with this little fieldguide booklet.. it was perfect for me!... I had experience birdng (not good book for the beginner or amateur) so it was eeezy.. in fact, better, faster, greater than birding a year or two later with the big MEXICO and CENTRAL AMERICA field guide...even illustrations are not as good as in other Princeton illustrated mini field guides, they were enough good to ID all species in the field...nice book, worth!!

One reviewer mentioned "openly envious" Howell & Webb users. I think that may be a bit of hyperbole. I am one of those people who have separated the Howell & Webb plates (from a worn copy) for use in the field. I also carry the old Peterson & Chalif guide when birding down Mexico way, but the Howell-Webb plates volume is easily the most used. This illustrated checklist by Van Perlo really doesn't change that. It is what it claims to be: an illustrated checklist. It helps a birder in the field narrow down the choices readily by portraying many species per page and offering succinct diagnostic and distribution information on a facing page. But until someone does for Mexico what Garrigues and Dean did for Costa Rica, that will have to suffice. I recommend that any birder unfamiliar with the majority of species in Mexico and Central America (which includes me) take this volume along as one useful supplement. Just don't expect a field guide in the tradition of Peterson or National Geographic or Garrigues-Dean or Howell-Webb.

Great for in-field use, not so great otherwise...

This is one of the most compact field guide to Mexican birding that I own. That's about it's best virtue. The illustrations are tiny, poorly layed out, and sometimes incorrect (that's the part that really bugs me - sometimes the illustrations flub key details). I suspect it's not the illustrator's fault, but rather the editorial and layout which seeked to create the minimum number of plates needed. As an example of equivalent size/species count done better look at National Geo's field guide, or Sibleys.

I'd love to see the illustrator who did the most recent National Geographic Birds of America field guide take a whack at Mexican birds. That would be the field guide I'd want.

I bought this book last week, and have had a lot of fun reading it! We added a Ragdoll cat to our family last year, and I had been looking for a good book about Ragdolls! It gives history of the breed's origin, the special nature of the breed, etc. It is just what I thought I was buying. If you have a Ragdoll, or are planning to get one, this will be a fun and useful tool for you!

I had heard so many good things about the Mr. Putter books that I decided to try them out with my 3-year old daughter, thinking that she may be a bit young for more words and fewer pictures. However, there are pictures on every page and only a few sentences to each. My daughter loves these books, especially this story. Her stuffed cat has been renamed Tabby.

One of the things I love about this book is that it includes silly details that make my child laugh every time - a bird picking fake grapes off of Mrs. Teaberry's hat, pouring water out of her hat onto everyone on a hot day, the "wierd" foods they bring along for the picnic...

I know of children all the way up to 3rd grade who enjoy these books, so I highly recommend them for any kids ages 4 to 8. Or as young as 3 if your child has the attention span.

I guess I was mistakenly expecting the book to impart some great wisdom upon me or something, but 90 percent of it is about the history of pitbulls, where they came from, and the bad image they have received. there's a partial chapter about actual dog training, which basically just says that repitition is the key to success...kinda already knew that...so it was a complete waste of money, I let my kids take scissors to the book and they made a poster with the pictures that were in it, since that was the best part of the entire thing anyways.

I bought this book AFTER I got a pitbull. The book even teaches you how to choose a pitbull, so a small part of it was not useful for me. I didn't finish it yet, I bought it recently, but I must say I already learned a lot from it. Stuff normal people told me to do, were not allowed. Like putting my dog with its nose in its "dirt" if he does it on the carpet, or playing tug of war with it. Well, A LOT! I truly recommend it.

Budgie owners beware!

Review Date: 2008-08-01
From the introduction given to this book, you get the impression that the author will spend at least some time addressing the peculiarities of the great budgerigar. I was greatly disappointed. Aside from a passing reference that budgies are hardier than some parrot species and that they can indeed learn to talk (both painfully obvious to any budgie owner), there is nothing at all. It is pretty obvious that she has never owned one. The author makes the assumption that, because budgies are parrots, they must be the same as every other kind of parrot that she has owned. And that they are not! This book is filled with misinformation that is thoroughly and completely refuted in other books written specifically for these little birds. For the budgie owner there is no reason at all to buy this book.
For owners of other times of parrots, I would consider looking elsewhere. The book is filled to the brim with preachy, top-of-the-soapbox lectures that are uninteresting, redundant, and obnoxious. If you actually made it through the first few chapters, which outlined in detail what a bad person you are for wanting to own a parrot in the first place, to the chapter where training is actually addressed, you might be disappointed to learn that it consists of only getting your bird to come to your hand from the t-stand, from inside and from on top of the cage (my budgie could do that after about a day!). Want to know the secret of getting your bird to talk? Just repeat the same word to it twice a day for ten minutes.
All of the essential information could be put on a simple print out of a few pages, and I would be greatly surprised if you couldn't find it after a few minutes searching on the internet.
