This is the emergency guide we've been looking for as the long term owners/keepers of 3 quarter horses. The pictures help us visually know what we're confronting with our horses. The essential "first aid" to be given, tells us what we can do, what we shouldn't do, and relay the critical information to our vet when we call. Our vet is over-burdened, as all large animal vets are, and giving him the correct information/description helps him know how soon he needs to come. We can also tell him how our horse is responding to the "first aid" we've given and whether he wants us to do anything additional. The size and spiral binding makes it easy for us to keep this reference at the barn, where we need it. We're also reading through this guide now, which helps us decide what to read further about in other resources, such as the Merk Manual of Veterinary Medicine.

This book was excellent for my 8yr. old. It contains lots of information on horses without being too overwhelming. The color photos and scale depictions of size really captured her interest. I would definitely recommend this book for kids who are not actively involved in equestrian activities but want to learn more about different breeds of horses. The one draw-back I found was that my daughter collects figurines of different breeds, and some we just could not find in the book.

The pictures are nice. But otherwise this is just your average guidebook to horses. The information is easy to understand and some of it, like the heights of horses, is represented visually. But if you are looking to know a little bit about a lot of breeds, this would be a good book for you.

I am so glad that I purchased this book. I needed a reference guide to help me identify different breeds of horses and ponies for the Photo Model Horse Shows that I have been participating in. Since I will eventually judge a show, I needed to be prepared to classify horse breeds from the photograph entries that will be sent to me. It is easy to read, the photographs are lovely, and there were only a few breeds not listed. Good job!

I have waited a long time to buy this book, and now that I finally have it I wish I'd bought it sooner. It has great explanations of how yoga connects with horseback riding. The exercises range from stretching techniques to easy muscle toning for primary riding areas, like the glutes. The stretching exercises are a great way to relax before going to bed. If you're a "weekend" rider and would like a way to work a little bit on your toning and balance between rides, this is the book. Don't let the yoga part turn you off. It's great!

My daughter and I traveled from Central New York to W. Springfield, Mass Nov. 9, 2002 to attend Equine Affaire. There were many workshops and presentations. Linda Benedik was one that we decided we would both enjoy. She demonstrated many of the yoga positions and had us all doing them with her. My daughter is an avid rider, I however just enjoy horses. At 52 I found the yoga made me feel so much more relaxed that I feel it would benefit everyone whether you are a horse person or not. I can not rate the book as I just got it and haven't had the opportunity to read it all yet but if it is 1/10th as good as the workshop you'll need more than 5 stars. If you ever have the opportunity to see and hear Linda Benedik in person - you'll find it well worth while.

This book is excellent. The text is straight-forward and easy to follow, as are the exercises -- amply illustrated. I found just doing a twenty minute routine from this book daily has already helped with suppleness, flexibility and relaxation. If you enjoyed Sally Swift's Centered Riding, then you'll find this a very complimentary read. If fact Swift garners a few mentions along the way. You can't go far in riding if you're tense or inflexible, and this book has lots of ways to counter both those problems. I highly recommend it.

There is wisdom in stretching and relaxing before working with your horse. If you are upset or tense, your horse can sense it and can make for a difficult or really bad work session. My instructor always says "To end on a good note". My mare is particularly sensitive to my moods and would react based on my body language. I had a problem relieving the tension in my lower back due to an injury and my mare could feel it in my seat and legs.

I had picked up a few tips from other riders, but when I purchased the Linda's book, things seemed to click, from breathing to helping me ease the tension in my back. I would try a few exercises before I mounted and while I was mounted. My mare was more relaxed. I think that this book (and video) helped.

I recommend getting the book and the video. The book is great with photos and more in-depth instruction of technique and postures. It is recommended that if you are new to yoga, like myself, that you read the first few chapters before attempting the postures. The video is helpful for those who wish to work with voice instruction and movement instead of flipping through pages and trying to execute what they've just read.

As an avid rider for many years, I found this book very helpful. I have a problem with riding "crooked" because of a rotated pelvis. My unevenness has become more noticeable in the years that I have been riding without an instructor. This book helps you become aware of your body and what you are doing with it. Highly recommended (even if you don't do much yoga -- I don't, but this was just my speed!)

With so many pet-related books out there, I didn't know which one would really help me out. Amazon's customer reviews on this book led me to buy it. Am I glad I did. It's sooo informative. There's so many different issues covered in the book, and covered so well. Ms. Moore really knows her stuff, and makes "user friendly" suggestions. You really think you know what's best for your dogs until it's as if she says, "You MIGHT want to try this...." AND IT WORKS! So many of the issues the author addresses are those I really needed to read. The best part of getting this book is how MY DOG reacted to my reading it. We are better friends than before....maybe because I'm a better parent??? - THANK YOU Arden Moore!

I just got this book the other day and have already read almost the entire thing. It has some great suggestions of how to deal with dog's behavior in everyday settings, and in situations that dog owners may encounter in the future - which will help prepare them for that. It also reiterates some training techniques that I have heard, but have not kept a part of my everyday routine with my dog, Cody. But, I will start reincorporating these things, as I now know how important they are to keep up and continue to use for further training. Thanks Arden!

A mystery solver

Review Date: 2007-11-06
Aha! This easy-to-read resource confirmed my suspicion as to why my new dog Lucy barks madly at the FedEx guy (see p. 97). But I never figured out why she did some other odd things until I found the answers in this helpful book. It solved such mysteries as:

Page 100: Why dogs sniff the crotches of guests.
Page 103: Why dogs vigorously, messily splash water out of the water bowl with their front paws!
Page 107: Why dogs do the "dead fish dance," such as the time Lucy threw herself atop a dead Dungeness crab and wiggled wildly. Yuck.
Page 95: How to get dogs like Lucy to not bark nonstop when the pizza guy comes to the door.

The forward of this book is written by John Grogan, author of famous "Marley & Me," and owner of trouble-boy Marley. He includes some humorous insights, plus says The Dog Behavior Answer Book "could have helped us in a big way. Had we had Arden's commonsense expertise then, we would have better understood what motivated Marley's bad-boy behavior and been able to formulate a strategy to change, or at least, temper it."

What particularly impresses me is that Arden doesn't just write about dog behavior, she lives it. My husband and I have known Arden since the 1980s. When she recently met our German shepherd mix Lucy in our home, I was nervous. Lucy barks at visitors -- looking at it most charitably, I suppose it's in hopes that she'll remain the center of attention.

Arden wisely surmised that visitors typically make rapid movements and, among other things, reward Lucy's barking by giving her treats as she barks.

Arden employed an altogether different strategy.

Examples:

1) She initially met Lucy outside the home on neutral turf.

2) Arden took a seat on our living-room sofa several minutes before Lucy returned to the home from a walk. So, there never was a barkathon at the front door since Arden already was on the sofa, sitting calmly.

3) As Arden sat calmly on the sofa, she kept yummy treats visibly nearby. Intelligent Lucy noticed that by acting like a polite dog, Arden occasionally rewarded her with yummy treats. That reinforced Lucy's politeness.

Lucy *never* had a barkathon during the several hours she was with Arden.

Thank you, Arden, for showing us Lucy can be good with visitors!

"It's beautiful," Jeremy whispered reaching out to pick it up. Jeremy ran away from Howard Morton and Freddie the Frog Killer so Mary Lou Hutton could kiss Jeremy the day that he stumbled into Mr. Elives magic shop. What would happen if you got the Chinese rings or a dragons egg? What would you do if you found out that you had to hatch it? You can learn about how things you love are always right next to you. Do you like Eragon or Eldest?
Then you want to take a break and go to a shorter book. If so, pick this one! I guarentee you will like this one. You'll love it just like I did! Now go read Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher by Bruce Coville to continue all the fun!!!

This ia a small yet very informative book for anyone who wants to learn about the breed. I am the first time owner of Papillon and this book was a lot of help. Along with other valuable information I learned from it that Papillon is a very fragile dog that gets along well with cats and most small dogs, but should never be around large dogs, also is not a very good pet for small kids. I also enjoyed the friendly manner in which the book is written and very nice color pictures.

Was very dissapointed. Did not think this book was as breed specific as other reviews claimed. Most advice seemed very generic. Housebreaking section was very limited and did not offer advice for difficult dogs. Also, another problem I was experiencing; teething, biting and chewing, was not even addressed in the book. Good for history of breed, but advice section was extremely limited. Would not recommend if you are looking for advice with various problems.

This is a great overall book on horses. However, the section on how horses actually move is really lacking. It does a good job discussing the basic walk, trot, pace, canter, gallop, but then says anything else is "artificial." "Any other gaits are caused by chains, chemicals, and shoeing practices". I have a completely barefoot Tennessee Walker trail horse that has some lateral gears that are not covered by this book at all.

I really enjoyed Ms. Bailey's approach to training gun dogs, especially the emphasis that she places on conditioning instead of formal training. Ms. Bailey's conditioning techniques allow you to train your dog without the dog realizing it. Her book and its methods are only intended for puppies to 1 year old dogs. She defers you to other books and techniques to use for training your adult dog. However, I feel that if you use the techniques she has stated in her book with your puppy/adolescent dog, you will be well on your way to having not only a great bird dog, but also a great family friend that is well mannered and socialized.

The key to this type of training is to keep your cool, relax, and don't get frustrated. No matter how simple an exercice you have to end a training session with, always end on a very possitive note. It will pay off in the long run.

I enjoyed reading the book in preparation for the arrival of my first gun dog pup. Though personally inexperienced in training, I have hunted over friends' dogs for several years and have spent enough time with "dog people" to have a sense of what can work. This book presents an excellent overview for the first-time or experienced trainer.
