This was the first Lilian Jackson Braun novel I have read. I loved it. I enjoyed reading about the cats and how smart Koko was. And how the cats knew the phone was going to ring 10 seconds before the phone rang.

Qwill is called in the middle of the night by his former landlady, Mrs. Cobb. She has been hearing strange noises and was scared. He leaves to investigate and finds her dead. Many strange things are happening at the museum, and Qwill decides to move in and find out what really happened to his friend.

Very enjoyable, this will not be my last Lilian Jackson Braun.

In the latest edition with Qwill and the gang of cats we see a major character killed off which is so sad cos she was one of the nices ones.

Once discovered that Qwills old friend has been "scared to death" he moves in to the farm house, which doubles as a museum, and begins to sniff out possible explanations for his dear friends death. Again this leads to Ko Ko trying to state the facts from his point of view what is going on, even going as far as talking to ghost....or so it seems. And naturally what insues is fun new characters, more murders, and even more mayhem all leading to the killer in the end.

If your looking for a really easy read this is definitly for you as long as you are a fan of the series because the murder mystery definitly takes back seat to the other story lines and new and familiar characters that pop up. If your new to the series I would recommend starting at the beginning to see how it all began. A must read for any Cat Who fan....

My Favorite Cozy Mystery Series!

In the 10th book in the Cat Who mystery series, James Qwilleran aka "Qwill", is called late one evening by his dear friend, Iris Cobb. Iris has been frightened by some noises that she hears outside of her apartment at the Goodwinter Memorial Museum and begs Qwill to help her. Immediately throwing on clothes over his pajamas, Qwill rushes out to Iris' home, and arrives too late, only to find his former housekeeper already dead...apparently from a heart attack. Mourning the loss of his friend, Qwill agrees to move into her apartment and take her place until a permanent replacement is found. Moving into Iris' home also gives Qwill the opportunity to poke around in her sudden and suspicious death.

Moving his adored cats, KoKo and Yum Yum, to the museum, Qwill begins to question his feeling about ghosts. Several influential members of the town claim to have seen them, and Qwill wonders if Iris had been frightened to death by a ghost's apparition. But redirecting Qwill's attention from the untimely death are several other strange occurances in Moose County. One is the annoying presence of Vince Boswell, the loud, brash man who lives up the lane from the museum and who is being considered to be the replacement for Iris, despite his lack of aptitude for the job. Another is an escaped felon that shows up in town...and shortly after his arrival, his ex-wife's goats are poisoned. Finally, many begin to wonder about the Goodwinter curse, and rumors continue to swirl regarding the death of Ephraim Goodwinter decades after his death. Qwill questions all of the facts, and in the end, finds that all of the pieces to this puzzle neatly tie together to spell murder.

This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. I must say that I was very saddened by Iris' death, as she was one of my favorite characters in this series. Many fans enjoy the homey, familiar feel of the town and the characters themselves, and Iris had become one of the favorites. I did, however, love this installment with all of its twists and turns!

If you are looking for a hardcore thriller, this would not be the series for you. However, if you are a fan of small town cozies, give this series a try. You might just find that you have become an avid "Cat Who" fan before the book is even finished.

This is a great series by my favorite author!

The first book in the series is called "The Cat who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!

I am fascinated with the writer of this book. Having lived my life as a Wiccan practitioner for over 40 years has allowed me to see what he sees. I am happy that someone is finally putting out into main stream culture the information that we have, for so long, lived with.

Kurlian photography has photographed the electrical maps of living systems for decades. And removing the physical aspect of the living organism does not diminish the electrical blueprint that remains behind as a whole, despite part of the living organism having been removed. Call it whatever you like: the aura is with us. Ready or not, enlightenment will come to unite all of mankind.

He speaks of dampening the process by thinking negative thoughts about the systems he explains. It is a natural thing for us to think the worst. Magic is no different. All texts ask that you simply accept magic as truth and then go about your life. We have always had the power to create our own realities. Now we see why.

THANK YOU, GOD!!! THANK YOU!!!

A Simple Idea Viewed from a New Perspective

Legendary managment guru W. Edwards Deming spoke frequently of "profound knowledge." Basically, this is knowledge that profoundly changes the way you think and releases new creative energies. See his book The New Economics.

Rupert Sheldrake's ideas about "morphogenetic fields" and "morphic resonance" must surely be that kind of knowledge. He begins with a fairly simple scientific concept and brings it into another creative universe. Many of us are familiar with "fields". For example, there are electomagnetic fields, gravitational fields, and quantum matter fields.

We know from Science that we are immersed in a sea of electromagnetic fields of numerous frequencies. Waves of energy pass through each other without interfering with each other. Matter is condensed energy. We can see that form of energy, however there is a lot of energy we cannot see.

Based on mathematical calculations, we also know that an infinite spectrum of energy waves is theoretically possible. Waves in infinite variety might be passing through each other continuously without noticeably interacting. Perhaps, the world we know is just one spectrum connected to many other spectrums we haven't seen yet.

We'd have worlds have within worlds, in other words: "baby universes", ten dimensions in "space time", "superstrings", "universe splits", and so forth and so on.

Author and physcist David Bohn famously explained it this way. "Everything material is also mental, and everything mental is also material. But, there may be more infinitely subtle levels of matter than we are aware of." This is where Sheldrake's morphogentic fields come into the picture, or big picture, it seems to me. The forms and physical properties that we see resonating throughout existence are developed by some kind of know-how or knowledge. Could it be that there are fields in Biology and Chemistry like the fields we recognize in Physics?

If I've got it right, Sheldrake's morphogenetic fields are mental or maybe spiritual fields that spread know-how and knowledge throughout creation. Maybe I've skipped a rung of the inner and outer worlds of existence, but I feel like I'm getting pretty warm here.

Sheldrake doesn't want us to just take his word for this, however. Theories in Science need to be tested. And, Sheldrake's already working on that. He proposes several experiments in the last few chapters of the book. Browsing Amazon, I see there's another book or two in publication about these experiments.

You might want to read this book with Out of Control by Kevin Kelly and/or Living Systems by James Grier Miller, which is what I did. Several reviewers of this book have mentioned "metaphysics". If you'd like to go in that direction as well, you might enjoy What is Process Theology by Robert B. Mellert or Process Theology: A Basic Introduction by Robert Mesle.

UNFORGETTABLE IDEAS

I read this book some years ago and find the ideas in it have stayed with me, as they go a long way toward filling some holes in our understanding of reality. Sheldrake's Morphic Fields mean living things communicate even when they are not in physical proximity. This explains some of his other research, such as psychic connections between human and animal. Read Sheldrake's book, Dogs That Know When Their Owners are Coming Home, a fascinating look at the human-animal bond.

But the idea that once a new technique is learned by part of the population, it is more easily learned by the rest is startling. Can it explain the rapid spread of computer literacy? Like the old joke in school, can we actually learn "by osmosis?" Sheldrake's examples of group behavior and generational learning in the animal world points exactly in that direction. What one generation learns can be passed to the next. What I learn can make it easier for you to learn. This is a radical idea!

I've recently read astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell's book, The Way of the Explorer, in which he presents his view of reality, based on years of research into psychic and spiritual pehonomenon. His view incorporates Sheldrake's ideas in that he accounts for knowledge that does not come from standard learning methods. Knowledge received from spiritual insight or received psychically is part of the natural but unseen web underlying our universe, according to Mitchell. All knowledge of past and present is available, but is not sought by most people, since they do not know or practice the techniques for tapping into that source and there are no currently accepted scientific theories to explain how it works. Sheldrake's Morphic Fields are one such explanation.

The Presence of the Past is an influential book that will continue to be consulted and discussed. Since reading it, I've had more reason to think Sheldrake is right and I've read nothing elsewhere that disproves his fascinating conclusions.

Hmm? am i really the first to give 5 stars?

I felt compulsed to write a 5-star review after seeing only 3 reviews, all of them giving 3 or 4 stars to this classic masterpiece. Hey, don't get it wrong! this is a superb book you can't put down once you've started. I have read it twice and intend to translate it into Estonian.
Although, yes, only maybe a quarter of orthodox biologists can stand Sheldrake's name, the implications of his theory - if correct - are enormous. It would thoroughly change our present understanding of the concept of memory, which means that we need new fields of science - physical semiotics, for example. It would push the "borders" of semiotics to include the very first particles after the BB. Followers of C.S.Peirce would drink lots of champagne and would celebrate the victory. It would also require a radical revision of the ideas of evolution.
So - yes, yes, this IS a popular half-science-fiction book, easily dismissed by orthodox scientists. However, several of Sheldrake's examples are convincing and his theoretizing makes sense. So, I prefer to keep Sheldrake's ideas in "Interesting unsolved cases" drawer. Sheldrake is very much like Ken Wilber. "Serious" philosophers don't call Wilber a philosopher, but an "interesting individual". I would take it as a compliment.

Paradigm-shifting work

Sheldrake's opus shakes the axioms of causality underlying experimental science. Not many books have done that. Not many books can address metaphysical topics, suggest alternatives to the standard Aristotelian underpinnings of science or "naturalism," and do so plausibly without recourse to superstition.

Sheldrake, a biologist, examines the many anomalous phenomena that seem to cut against some very basic beliefs about "how things work." The book integrates observations from many different fields of endeavor from physics to biology to psychology. The scope of this work as as wide as it is deep.

If you have ever read Thomas Kuhn's "Structure of Scientific Revolutions," this book will resonate along the same lines for you. Well worth your time and money.

Those of us who are unfamiliar with the breed, gathered lots of things that will help us in the care and nuturing of this wonderful animal! Who knew that big old grizzly looking Boxer was a sweetheart, full of affection and devotion! Great reference book to have on handle, especially if you're rearing a pup.

We've just become the owners of a boxer pup, and used this book before and after he joined our family. The book is very easy to understand and contains a wealth of useful material. It also has a lot of general sections that would be relevant to any new pet owner. This isn't a book you would use for hard-core research, but I recommend it for the average new pet owner as an easy to read reference. It was well worth the price.

Like most for dummies books, this is essentially a cut and paste of all of their other dog books with the word boxer inserted in place of dog. In a few cases it has stories of the writers experiences with boxers but this book is really nothing special. Try culture clash to get a better understanding of your companion.

I really enjoyed reading this book on Boxers. I am researching dog breeds before I commit to a new family member. There was a careful balance of enthusiasm for the Boxer and warnings of their specialized needs AND the responsibilites of Boxer ownership.
I especially enjoyed the observations he made between male and female boxers, puppy training, and problematic behaviors.
Even if I don't decide to own a Boxer in the future, this was an entertaining educational read that I would recommend to all.

The photographs are superb and the authors have really done their homework in presenting the information. The book is written in a plain, clear style that will not only sustain the readers' interest, but will also help keep readers informed about the care and temperament of this wonderful breed.

My grandchildren (and I) loved the first Mr. Pusskins book and found the newest one equally as much fun. What we all loved about it was that Mr. Pusskins is very real, has real feelings, and yet learns how to forgive and accept this new kitten. For children with younger siblings, these are feelings and struggles they know well! We also enjoyed finding little touches or surprises on each page. They don't get tired of having me read this book to them and I don't get tired of reading it!

Clever writing and lovable characters. Mr.Pusskins and Little Whiskers is a must buy!

Review Date: 2008-04-28
I think few would question that this is the definitive guide to Mexican birds. Few would characterize it as the ideal field guide at 850-plus pages. For portable guides birders in Mexico can use the Peterson-Chalif guide (somewhat dated, but still useful), _The Birds of Mexico and Adjacent Areas_ by Ernest P. Edwards from 1998 (also quite useful and perhaps a bit underrated, though the sequence of some illustrations seems a bit baffling at times), and Van Perlo's illustrated checklist (not really a field guide in my view).

But nothing compares to Howell & Webb. And with some real bargains on used (even worn) copies occasionally found at Amazon, one can (with the help of a copy-printing service) obtain a portable guide that works quite well in the field. It's not a new practice and I may be covering ground already trod by other reviewers, but this is how I did it.

The copy service I used went with a small wire spiral for the plates and a large plastic spiral for the text. The Plates Volumes consists of:

- a laminated copy of the front cover
- a copy of the Color Plates table of contents
- a copy of the Abbreviations page
- all plates
- a laminated copy of the back cover

The Text Volume (kept in the car or hotel room for reference) includes:

- the front cover
- all text pages, including Appendices, Bibliography, and Index
- the back cover

Don't do this with your only copy of this book. My first edition copy is intact and used for reference at home.

Would not pack again

We found the book difficult to use as the color plates are centrally located and separate from written discriptions. Further it's size filled too much "valuable real estate" in the minimal luggage we travel with and the weight did not justify it's helpfulness. We saw several birds in the Yucatan - verified by our Mayan guide - that were not included in this book. Even had we listened to one recommendation which was "tear the book apart and take only the parts you think you may need", I would have been left wondering if the birds we saw (but not included in the guide) had been left in the portion of the book we didn't take with us. I'm still seeking a better bird book for this region.

I checked this book out in a pet supply store once, and was rather disappointed to find that so many of the rare breeds were left out in the dog breeds section - including my personal favorite (Spanish Mastiff).

Basically,, this maybe be the ultimate guide for those wanting to read up more on dog care, training, health, and all that... but when it comes to covering info/pics on the MANY breeds of dogs there are out there (known and unknown) - one needs to look elsewhere.. I recommend "The Canine Lexicon" (by by Andrew De Prisco, James B. Johnson, and Isabelle Francais) and "The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World" (by Bonnie Wilcox and Chris Walkowicz) for that aspect.

This book is terrific. The patterns are clear and easy to follow, the book is bright and the dogs pictured are adorable! It has come out just in time for me to finish projects for the holiday gift season. Can't wait to see my friends and family putting these cute outfits on their dogs.

I just got this book and it's wonderful. There are some great new techniques and some really cute new designs. The hat with holes for the ears and an attached scarf to wrap around is so adorable. I can't wait to knit that one. There is also a new snuggle bed pattern that I'm sure my cat will love. If you like pet knits, this one is worth the money for sure.

I just took a peek at this book yesterday evening at my LYS. The patterns in this book are uniquely clever. The photos of these pooches are adorable. I can't wait to make the hat and scarf set for my little pup. Too Cute!!

I thought this book was very well written and the patterns are stylish and simply wonderful. Not your typical simple sweater patterns for dogs. I don't have a dog but will be making sweaters for friends....many friends.

My favorite pattern is the hoodie and even has a pocket.
