Very good for beginners. Covers all important topics. Very simple language, without technical jargon which is often overwhelming people who just starting with hobby. Very nice stocking guide and chapter about biotops which is not found often in similar position.

I recommend it to anyone who thinks to start with reefkeeping hobby.

Inspiring, detailed, practical

One can appreciated the authors' long experience with marine aquaria who elegantly and with simple language explained larger biological concepts yet provide detailed instructions on how do to what and why. Very inspiring are the suggested biotopes that include among others "seagrass aquarium", "reef gorge aquarium", "pizza anemone aquarium", "rubble zone aquarium" as well as the standard reef tank. These are refreshing ideas that are needed with the current predominance of grocery store shelf-like stocked, overcrowded best-of-the-month SPS tanks. Also contains a comprehensive guide about most creatures possible in a reef tank and essentially makes e.g. Sprung's "Quick" guides unnecessary in one's library.

What a great cut-to-the-chase reference for the reef hobiest. The selection guide is very helpful, especially if you are concerned about compatability or just want to develop a specific region in your own reef tank.

Interesting, but ...

As a beginning reef aquarist, I enjoyed reading this book, but I am not sure it is a practical book for the novice.

Some of the advice it gives seems designed for the advanced hobbiest who has little need for the book. For example, it advises no more than about a 10% water change each year. That is probably enough for an established, well-maintained aquarium in service for a couple of years already, but I doubt it is a regime suitable for someone just starting.

The authors' advise seems to defy conventional wisdom in other areas. The suggested Ph paramaters, for example, vary from anything I have seen elsewhere. Perhaps that's why they are called reef "secrets". Or perhaps they are just "typos"

Interestingly, the book presents a photo of what it bills as one of the finest amateur marine aquariums anywhere. I went on-line to learn more about that system and learned that the owner has a maintenance regime and water paramaters at odds with the recommendations in this book!

Still, all in all, an enjoyable and well-informed read. It's just not a suitable "how to" book for most of us. On the other hand, the section at the end on species selection was very useful.

Loved it! Has some of the best reefing information available, without the over-technical mumbo jumbo! The stocking guide is excellent; just lacking on a few species.

A solid historical introduction

Review Date: 2008-08-19
The professional historians in this volume have written this book, aimed at a general audience, for the purpose of sharing some important advancements that have taken place in the last 60-70 years, but of which the general public is more or less unaware. The area where these advancements have occurred is the historical relationship between science and religion. There is still a widespread cultural prejudice that religion is fundamentally, and therefore was historically, opposed to science. This basic thesis, the "warfare" thesis, was put forth popularly in two influential books by Draper, in 1874, and by White, in 1896. The Draper book, asserting a thesis that would have been absurd to the fathers of the scientific revolution, immediately became wildly popular, going through at least fifty printings and ten translations, so it was a thesis that the public was eager to hear. The White book did not sell as well as the Draper book, but in the end was much more influential. Since at least the 1920s, however, serious scholars began to recognize the problems with the Draper/White thesis, and the result has been almost a century of fascinating scholarly investigations into the true historical relationship between science and religion.

This book is a collection of essays by leaders in the field examining the interactions between science and religion in terms of important historical eras (early church, Middle Ages, 19th century, etc.); important ideas (Christianity and the mechanistic universe, geology and earth history, Darwinism, etc.); and important groups and individuals (Copernicans, Catholicism, Reformers, Puritans, 19th and 20th century Protestant theologians, etc.). The essays are well documented, accessible to the layman, non-polemical, and seem to cover all of the most important areas. There is an extensive list of further reading at the back, with comments on each book by the editors. The book is well written and edited, I enjoyed it, and I think anyone concerned with the actual historical record will find it very interesting.

This book wasn't exactly what I thought it would be like. It is very short and doesn't have lots of specific details. It is however an exellent source overall. One great thing about it not having lots of details is that it is short and very easy to read the entire thing rather than just skim certain sections. I found the grooming section very helpful and informative. However I would have liked a little more information in the training section. Also I would have liked more details in handling those difficult puppy moments such as when they try to bite. I loved that this book is completely tailored to the cairn terriers rather than it being a general dog book. I definitely was not disappointed.

because it contains the most concise information and is also a good buy. When I sell my Cairn Terrier puppies, I always send a Barrow's Cairn Terrier book. The book is included with the purchase of the puppy to help the owner answer all their questions in regard to their new Cairn Terrier puppy. I also consult it myself for answers to questions. The pictures of the Cairn Terriers in the book are of good quality and variety.

First need to train the owner of the GSD
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-01
I liked this book. It contains lots of good tips on how to educate a GSD. I also enjoyed the many good pictures of GSDs displaying their traits and showing their skills. However, one can follow the advice, attempt to teach the lessons, ask for obedience, beg for mercy, but if the dog wants to follow the car, jump on the cyclist, tear your shirt or hide your socks, he WILL DO IT!! Perhaps I did not pay enough attention to all the details about training, or Bronco (my GSD) has a heart the size of a mountain, capable of expressing immeasurable and unconditional love, plus the strength of a locomotive and the will of bull, but he has proven to be nearly untrainable. He's quit hiding my socks, but I already gave up on things such as "search and rescue" training. Forget also about "bomb and weapon detection". I guess I cannot blame Dan Rice's book.....

dissapointed

While the book has a lot of good advice , IMHO too much is dedicated to specialized training (rescue, work, etc.); basic training tips are mentioned in a minimalistic way. Overall I was dissapointed.

Review Date: 2007-03-18
I was expecting a basic training manual with a few things directed to the GSD but instead it goes from simple sit and come tricks to how to teach your dog search and tracking. It helps by explaining that if you play certain games or teach certain tricks early on, it would help if you are training them for a more advanced work and tasks, like tracking or search and rescue. It has good pictures that explain much of what they are writing about and lots of info and explaining on tricks, the breed and more advanced jobs the GSDs are known to do. I would recommend for anyone wanting to train their dog basic manners and training or more advanced levels of the training or those that just want to know more about the breed and what it is able to do a learn. It is very helpful and great for first time owners.

THE new book on US Turtles
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-26
"Turtles of the Southeast" is a great book for many audiences, from those just casually curious about turtles to those who work with them every day as a profession.

The book's layout is very useable. Turtle species are arranged according to the kind of habitat in which they are most commonly seen. Photo quality is generally very good, although the placement of the wood turtle plastron photo will make comparative identification tricky. Photos never do well when placed between pages. But, you see, it must be petty critiques as this if there are to be any for this book. This is the kind of book needed on every bookstore shelf to get the layperson excited about the great richness of turtles we should better enjoy outdoors in the southern United States - a more tranquil option than our current allowance for the exportation of hundreds of thousands of wild-collected turtles to Asian food markets each year from southern states including AR, LA, TX, OK, FL, and GA.

The range maps may not be so accurate as county maps or dot locality maps, but they'll get the general idea across. Not all subspecies are pictured such that identification will come readily, but the text descriptions will fill in for this. Habitat photographs, such a rarity in many publications that prefer to separate turtles from their environments, are in abundant supply here. As an added treat, the end of this book briefly showcases every species of turtle native to the US but occurring completely outside of the range considered in this book.

This book's construct is great. It's got stiff boards like the Sibley Guide to Birds and other such softcovers built for USE. Binding is very solid and seems as though it'll hold up for many busy years. "Turtles of the Southeast" is one of the nicest general-audience turtle books to date, and it's priced such that everyone who goes outdoors should enjoy a copy.

Very useful information
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-09
This book breaks down algae into groups, tells you the good, the bad and the ugly, and how to deal with it. It caught my eye searching for info on refugium filters and I'm very pleased with it. Even if you don't plan to use an algal filtration system you should own it, because you will have algae in your aquarium almost immediately so why not be prepared. Not all algae is bad and after you read this book you'll be able to identify the ones you want to get rid of. Although, the author does like to use very large words, so get your dictionary out, it is still readable. It's not a very big book and gets straight to the point without "opinions or stories" and it doesn't have a hefty price tag either.

This book kept me in stitches! I was really surprised to find that one cat is credited for destroying a whole species. It puts them right up there with man himself. On the other hand, I hope to see a sequel soon to include Hemingway's cats and maybe even a couple of my cats. No? Oh, well... If you're my friend, expect to get your own copy for Christmas!

As a cat lover and history buff, Sam Stall's book is wildly entertaining. It's amazing to think that a cat can have so much of an impact. Mine mostly just eat, sleep and give me dirty looks! So, you can imagine my surprise to learn of the huge accomplishments the cats described in the book had on history. I was laughing hysterically all night, much to the confoundment of my husband. You will truly enjoy this book and you might even learn something about those frisky felines we call our friends!
