I really enjoyed this book. It laid out in a simple format the different types of pits in life. They are...

(1) The one's people push us into.
(2) The one's we accidently fall into ourselves.
(3) The one's we fall into deliberatly ourselves.

No matter which one you are in, it gives Biblical advice how to get out! This is a great book!

Encouraging book!

I found it to have a strong biblical foundation. Beth Moore is refreshingly open and candid and non-judgmental but also challenging. I would have given it five stars, but the book seemed to run out of steam at the climax -- it just didn't come together in grand fashion like the first 3/4 of the book. But I'm really glad I got to read it, and I will be re-reading parts of it. This is my first Beth Moore book, and I will be reading others.

I liked this one because it is based on the KJV, the real deal! It doesn't replace the actual Bible, but it makes it easier for the kids to enjoy and learn about some of the Bible stories. Good value, I shopped around before buying, and the price is fair. God Bless!

My son is 3 and he received this bible for his Dedication when he was 18 months old. We started reading it together about 8 months ago and it is fantastic. He loved the pictures and the stories and it is worded perfectly and is wonderful!!!!

The problem with this beginners Bible is how it represents God. Imagine, the story of Noah begins with God being "sad" because people didn't think of him (and so consequently flooding the earth). This makes God seem like a tyrant to a small child (imagine creating fear in a child re: thinking of God). The actual scripture says "the thoughts of man were only evil all of the time." This could be better put into child language such as God felt upset because the people he made kept hurting each other and doing mean things to each other (so SOMETHING closer to the idea in scripture). A kind of lazy thinking dominates both the text and illustrations (which lack any depth or expression besides googley eyes). Imagine my dismay when I received three for my sons first birthday. As someone who does not like to take God's name in vain, I feel this thoughtless representation does just that.

A must-read if you are interested in the history of science

Review Date: 2008-09-09
Walter Isaacson has done a masterful job of retracing Albert Einstein's life, including his earliest childhood, his miracle year of 1905, the development of general relativity and his political activism. This book is an erudite yet thoroughly readable and entertaining look at the man.

His genius was in being able to see physical meaning to equations; to him an equation was a representation of physical reality. His weakness was in not accepting quantum mechanics, to which can be attributed his famous quote about God and dice. Most enjoyable about the book were his exchanges with the quantum scientists such as Max Born and Niels Bohr. Isaacson was completely objective, illustrating his strengths in science, his weaknesses in relationships, and his naïveté in politics.

The author also was able to communicate the difficult scientific concepts necessary for understanding physics today. Indeed this is the clearest book I have read on the subject but possibly also the least detailed, although these may go hand-in-hand. I suggest, if you are making a new foray into reading about the history of physics, that you start here. This book will give you a good foothold into reading other books such as Kip Thorne's "Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy."

A life of science and faith -- in the comprehensibility of the universe

Review Date: 2008-08-31
A wonderful biography of a unique, fascinating and enthralling person. The author brings freshness to this much-written subject by drawing on voluminous personal correspondence that remained sealed for 50 years following Einstein's death. The book is a remarkable achievement by being both highly readable and accessible, and providing scientifically sound explanations for the lay person of complex concepts of physics. As a history of science, of the early 20th century, and as a perspective on one of the most engaging and innovative personalities ever, this book is total education and refreshment. Especially moving is the fundamental thread of Einstein's personality as a lifelong quest for unifying principles, married to unsentimental devotion to reason, logic and a faith in the comprehensibility of the universe. (Good luck with that one.)

I had a mild interest in reading about Einstein, but frankly put off reading this biography for the simple reason that it seemed thicker than my interest. But what a wonderful read it is. Isaacson does a graceful job of keeping the pace moving, and an estimable job of explaining the science (to us non-scientists) without letting it bog down the story.
And, quite simply, Einstein is also a fascinating person to read about, especially his later life as an internationalist and world icon. Highly recommended.

I would definitely recommend this book. I was barely through the first chapter and was absolutely amazed at how much I was NEEDING to read this book. It fit my life perfectly. I love the way she words things and labels things throughout the book. About the time I would think the book couldn't match me any more perfectly, I'd read something that would fit right in once again! I'm not even finished reading it as of yet but I know it's one of those books that I will read many more times in the future! A+ recommendation!

I am so excited about this book. So many women today just don't understand the balance we need to maintain in life as women and Christians. They are unaware of the central ground of being at the feet of Jesus all the while serving in the capacity of the world we live in. JoAnna Weaver does get it and she bears her heart in her book, "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World."

In twelve revelation and scripture packed chapters, JoAnna takes you to the core of what you need to balance it all.... a relationship with Jesus Christ.

You'll be drawn to chapters like: "Lord, Don't You Care?", Living Room Intimacy, and Balancing Work and Worship and those are just a few. I couldn't put the book down. The message is biblical, the concepts are practical, and the way it is written is very personable and you can very easily relate to her.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver is a book that should be on every woman's bookshelf. In today's world that requires more and more of women: working full time, perfect wife and mom, active in church and school, spotless housekeeper, and gourmet chef, Weaver's book is a counterpoint singing the value of rest and taking the time to listen to Jesus. Weaver uses the story in Luke chapter 38 when Jesus comes to visit sisters Mary and Martha at their home in Bethany. Martha rushes around preparing the house and meal for her visitors when she notices that Mary isn't helping at all. Instead, she's sitting at Jesus' feet listening to his teaching. Martha approaches Jesus and asks him to rebuke Mary for her laziness, but Jesus gently reproves Martha for her busyness and explains that Mary is doing just what she needs to. Psalm 46:10's admonition: Be still and know that I am God comes to life through Weaver's gentle teaching. We spend entirely too much time running from one thing to the next without taking the time to worship God and get to truly know him, and so our soul suffers needlessly. This book is a blessing to everyone who reads it!

This book was recommended by someone, I waited awhile before I purchased it, I finally found it at a Books-a-Million store, browsed through it and decided, I had to have it. My little boy is 6 years old and he loves the stories and illustrations. We read a couple every night at bedtime and I am learning again the older bible stories from my childhood as well. I also bought the book Handbag Friends from this same author Sally Lloyd Jones. My daughter will receive this at her 3rd birthday, very cute.. it's hot pink in the shape of a handbag. Thanks, A.S. from Bring The Rain ;)

This is a book that gets very detail into the sexual struggles that face men. There is no beating around the bush with this book, it is very direct and to the point as it lets you into the life of a man who struggled with this sin. Not recommended for teenagers, as there is also a book for them by this author.

This book is probably the worst book on the subject of sexual temptation and addiction out there. They copy a lot of material from other authors (Carnes) but change it into something sanitized and useless. If you want to deal with anything beyond the symptoms of temptation or addiction then look elsewhere. Pat Carnes or Mark Laaser are the better choices.

a womans viewpoint

Review Date: 2008-04-22
I really hope people read this from a womans viewpoint. The thing that gets me heated about this is that this is NOT HOW WOMAN THINK! I wish women would get real with their feelings. This is no shock! If you think women don't have battles exactly like this then you would be wrong. Men get sexual gratification through their eyes. Women get sexual gratification from touch and the pursuit of them. Women know what they are doing when they dress a certain way. Im a married woman and when I see a goodlooking guy I honestly think and wonder how he is in bed. I to tell myself not to go to far with the way I think about that guy. The danger for women is that they want to be touched and they want EVERY man to want them. Its just how we are wired. We are all human so if you think this is just a man's problem then u r wrong! Women who are in touch with their bodies struggle also. So the fact that women are shocked by this makes me think they need to truely evaluate themselves. Sorry if this offends anyone but its the truth!!

Thank you Mr. Hesse for writing this novel. The dvine spark that exists in the main character is something that everyone should be able to identify with. Being captivated by the pages of this book puts us in touch with the divinity that lies within us all. Throughout the book, the resolute spirit, the capacity for the character to live his life with abandon is always there. It is hard for this book to end and one wishes that Sidhartha continues on. Perhaps we can all bring Siddhartha with us in spirit, to provide us with uplift and inspiration as we carry on with our own journeys.

A rambling spiritual adventure...

On a whim I picked this one up, knowing of it and recognizing the book title. I knew nothing of what the book was about, except what I could surmise from the cover.

I was a little put off initially with the way Hesse wrote, kind of flighty with nothing too concrete or definite. Is it a spiritual quest, a personal quest and so on. Then as Siddhartha grows older within the book we begin to see the natural progression from one mental/spiritual situation to the next. We see him go from spiritual, to rich, gambling, to being poor to a heightened spiritual state and so on.

All in all, after I worked my way into the flesh of Hesse's writing, I began to enjoy Siddhartha. You feel as though you are on the spiritual voyage with him and can understand where he is coming from. I am glad that there were only 150 pages and it was a fast read, because I most certainly would not want to read this style of writing for very long. I would recommend.

4 stars.

A journey through the life of a man with a single purpose: to find his own truth.

Knowing that the only way to discover life's greatest mysteries is to go through the heart of them alone, he finds himself living one extreme after another until he finally rests in the balance.

The ending will either leave you glowing or pondering, but either way you will not regret taking the time to read this remarkable tale.

Although I can understand the longing to separate oneself from the frustrations and hypocrisy of human life, it does seem like an abandonment rather than an accomplishment to me. Maybe because of this, and because I had been exposed to the tenets of both Buddhism and Hinduism prior to reading this novel, I didn't find it as life-altering and uplifting as many others find it. If you're new to eastern philosophy, this could be a good general introduction.

Review Date: 2008-06-24
I have never been a huge fan of philosophy, but I can see why this little tome is considered a classic. It is a life's journey and a profound look into the soul. Siddhartha's journey and his desire to be spiritually fulfilled began as a Brahmin's son, then as an ascetic, then into a life of lust and material possessions, and finally into a peaceful life as a ferry driver. With all his outward searching, Siddhartha comes to realize that inner peace is not achieved through lessons from a teacher, or fasting, or worldliness. It is an inward reflection, a recognition of self. This book challenges the ideas of love and nature, among other things.

In a time when Christianity is infected with "truth is what you want it to be today but it might be different tomorrow" and living the faith is some sort of magical mystery tour, Colson and Fickett's new book is much-needed and should be read along with MacArthur's THE TRUTH WAR. Colson/Fickett remind us that God did not mumble in His word. He spoke clearly and the truths of scripture are the same today as they were when penned through inspired writers.

A book that spurs Christians to take their faith beliefs more seriously
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-14
In THE FAITH, Charles Colson --- internationally known speaker, author and founder of Prison Fellowship --- writes in his characteristically eloquent, sometimes alarming and consistently thought-provoking style. Evangelicals, as well as those not of the Christian faith, will find a solid resource of historical case studies recording how matters of faith and conscience have formed our nation's belief systems and educating readers of the larger world's historical, political and religious views. Colson is an expert at drawing parallels between current-day individual and corporate decisions with man's inner struggle for real meaning in life and through faith in Christ.

In this two-part text, readers will first gain foundational knowledge on God and the Faith followed by The Faith and Life. Colson opens this dynamic primer with a definition of orthodoxy and proceeds to lay out his premise of why today's Christian (and today's church) is frequently ineffective, divisive and lacking power to influence its contemporaries with light, love and Christian self-sacrificing service. Citing such classic Christian scholars as C.S. Lewis, Dorothy Sayers, William Wilberforce, John Stott, G.K. Chesterton, Abraham Kuyper, Francis Schaeffer and Richard Neuhaus, Colson shares that his text draws upon these authors' works to help illustrate the timelessness of the Christian struggle and its message. He tells readers that times are changing fast. Western culture is doing everything in its power to shut the door, which is why Christians must work hard and fast to regain the what and whys of their beliefs.

Starting with the beginning of the historical church, Colson offers a brief look back into history and explains how Christianity is the faith that has always endured time. Readers will better grasp sometimes-elusive terms such as postmodernism, the death of truth, orthodoxy and the like. He spends adequate space detailing the three ideas of origin: Theory 1: The Godless material universe; Theory 2: God Is an Intelligent Presence in All Things, a Universal Mind; and Theory 3: A Personal God. As he digs more deeply into this core belief, Colson concludes that what we individually choose to believe amongst these three options becomes our most important decision in life. "Everything else follows from it. It's the place where the search for the truth begins."

Following this key decision, Colson then wades into discussions on the Holy Spirit, the Canon of Scripture, Archaeology, Textual integrity of Scripture, and the Bible's historically proven transforming power to effect positive, life-altering changes in the lives of both individuals and societies. He continues along Christian theological issues on the importance of truth and why it matters to humanity, the problem of evil and personal responsibility, Jesus Christ and his work on the Cross, the trinity and God's sovereignty, suffering and saving faith, classic marks of the church, social holiness, and much, much more.

Every chapter, every topic, offers readers something weighty to mull over, contemplate and act upon. Colson certainly has succeeded in not only educating Christians but spurring them to take their faith beliefs more seriously.

Our church has chosen this book for our summer Bible study. I preach from the main chapter topics and then we use the study guide for our Adult Bible Classes. In some ways the Study Guide has been more helpful than the book as it takes a more detailed approach for questioning subject matter. For me personally the vignettes were not very helpful and I think the book is exaggerated in its advertizing. All in all, the main subjects (i.e. God, The Word, The Truth, etc) are very timely topics and our congregations seems to have profited by the study.
