Newbigin has a gift for making the profound understandable and the complex accessible to the lay reader and the church professional. This is must reading for anyone who is serious about evangelism in our pluralistic, post-modern society.

I cannot recommend this book too highly. Newbigin shows us how to avoid the pitfalls of liberalism and fundamentalism, and how to express the Gospel unequivocally in today's language. My heart raced throughout the process of reading this book and, when done, I started over and read it again.

This is simply a must read for bible believing christians. This is not a book that rants and raves about "bad pagans". No, this book is a very thoughtful work on the subject of the biblical gospel of Jesus as related to the various societies and cultures in a modern/post-modern setting. An eye opening work that should be learned from.
A Needed Challenge for Western Christianity

Though slightly pessimistic about the future of the church in the West, Newbigin provides a needed challenge to the modern church. The church in North America is in a new situation--there are a plurality of cultures represented in our major cities, and this plurality is spreading to smaller towns. How does the church reach out to and minister to their neighbor who is Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or Jewish--when the impression given is that some of these individuals of other faiths are more devout and holy than many Christians that we may know? What is a proper posture to take when standing for "the fact of Jesus?" How is the church to minister in a post-Enlightenment context, which has created a different worldview from that which dominated for the first 1800 after the coming of the Messiah?
This book is a good read--it provides challenges and a loose framework for how to move forward.

Lesslie Newbigin was (and is, through his writings) a celebrated missiologist. While on the surface of it, this book gives the impression of being an eclectic mix of ideas, there is a fundamental cohesion to the book. In fact it represents a fundamentally new approach to missiology.
The book may arguably be said to have one underlying theme: epistemology, or the theory of knowledge. That is, how can we know? How can we have confidence in the gospel "in the midst of a plurality of cultures and religions"? Newbigin, in his own words, has "relied heavily on the work of Michael Polanyi." Polanyi's epic work "Personal Knowledge" was published nearly fifty years ago, and reveals what might be said to be a coherence theory of truth. That is, if one's beliefs should cohere as a whole, this should be a good indication of truth. Polanyi, however, adds a radical twist to this. He writes about "the coherence of commitment". That is, once one has formed a responsible opinion about "truth", one needs to commit to it passionately, and publish. Only in this way can one both display integrity, and submit one's "truth" to the scrutiny of others -- to be affirmed, modified, or perhaps even overturned. It is not hard to see how this relates to missiology. In terms of this view, the gospel requires commitment and proclamation. This in turn leads to a confirmation of its truth in various ways -- or it may lead to a revision of Christian beliefs and practices.
Newbigin further applies Polanyi's epistemology to virtually every aspect of Christianity. He undertakes a broad task of synthesis, or reconciliation, within the Church. He suggests "a third way of understanding Christian belief" -- a method which seeks to take Scripture on its own terms, and which (he hopes) would be acceptable to Christians of virtually every persuasion. This represents, arguably, much of the drawing power of Newbigin's ideas.
However, Newbigin's epistemology is not without its problems. Not least, Polanyi himself considered that there would be "absurdly remote chances" of successfully applying his philosophy to Christianity, and that even a witch doctor "may gain a limited justification within a society" (p. 318, Second Impression 1962). Further, it seems doubtful that Newbigin gives adequate account of how a living God might find a place within an (apparently) closed theory of truth.
All having been said, Newbigin is intellectually agile, he writes with conviction, and his ideas have a considerable reach. He also shares many interesting insights gained in missions over nearly forty years, as well as important observations on the Church in the West.

Many Christian High school students graduate and their parents send them off to college, even a Christian college. There they face challenges to "the faith of their fathers." The faith they profess is not the faith they possess. Soon they face challenges such as evolution, lack of credibility in the Bible, as well as temptations to sin or follow other religions. They will not survive on secnd-hand faith. This book will help them to develop and maintain a Christian lifestyle while away from home. It will help them to realize that they're not the "only one" out there.
Christians can not only survive, but flourish in college!

Welcome to College: A Christ-Follower's Guide for the Journey
How to Stay Christian in College is a clearly written and useful primer on some of the key issues college students face. It is unique in that it is written from the perspective of a successful and thoughtful Christian professor at a large state school. Budziszewski offers helpful advice to students on issues such as politics and morality. College is a time full of opportunities and challenges for Christians and this book will help them begin to prepare for both.

J. Budziszewski's own personal story is one of losing his childhood Christian faith in college, and not just in the sense of casually drifting away from it, but becoming openly opposed to it. So thoroughly had he deconstructed God and the meaning of existence, that he considered himself a wholehearted nihilist. In other words, there was no God, no purpose or meaning to existence.
He writes this book for Christian students going to college, those already in college, and for their parents (I might add teachers, pastors, and mentors). His purpose is to prepare them for the challenges to the Christian faith that they will face spiritually, intellectually, and socially--both in the classroom and among their friends. He breaks down the various worldviews and blends of them that occur in society and especially in college, such as naturalism, post-modernism, and what he calls "Do-it-yourself spirituality."
The section on "Campus Myths" is particularly good, and he writes with his usual compelling clarity and simple logic. The section shows how professors under the commitment of their particular worldview may show bias and inconsistency about how we engage in the search for truth, and the possibility of arriving at "truth" and "Ultimate Truth". The discussion of myths about sex, love, and marriage, would be a great basis for a high-school youth group study on the topic. Using a Biblical context, he shows how love is a "commitment of the will to the true good of another person. That means that its (love's) adult expresssion is not sex but the binding promises of marriage." He also demonstrates how sex outside of marriage can actually be damaging to relationships, and why God wants us to wait.
Advice for finding a solid campus ministry to get involved with is also given, and Budziszewski also gives the important advice that these campus groups or small groups ought never to take the place of regular Christian worship with a gathered congregation of believers. This is where the body of Christ as a whole meets to be fed by Christ's Word and Sacraments, and there we receive the much needed forgiveness of sins. Budziszewski writes with a boldness that he readily acknowledges might offend some, but he is unapologetic about the truth. And as he himself discovered, knowing the Truth (Jesus Christ) will set you free (John 8:32). This book prepares the Christian to be alert and open-eyed about the challenges that may face them (often even in private Christian colleges), and to engage in their learning and enrichment in the college years with wisdom and with the love of God. It doesn't turn them to be adversarial or antagonistic to professors or institutions, but to be equipped in their faith so they will not be surprised or caught off guard by attacks to their faith, and know how to handle them. I highly recommend this book for high school and college students and their parents.

I've made it to page 92, and every page has made me laugh. He makes it seem as if unless a non-believer is asking, "How can Jesus save me what should I do." that they are blowing smoke and trying to divert your thought. He paints the non-believer as rude, and unintelligent on pages 70 and 71, where as the believer is portrayed as being calm, wise, and mannered. A lot of this book is written so that young Christians have a way to combat atheists, or those that might argue contrary beliefs. I am an atheist, I have heard Christian arguments some of them are well formed, this book tries to mimic them but fails horribly. His comparisons and descriptions are weak, and the author shows he has little understanding of alternate views, and his views on Christianity are also shaky depending on your denomination. I beg you for the sake of good argument, don't add this book to your arsenal. I would simply laugh, and end any conversation about religion with someone who would try to argue the way Budzisewski does.
I was raised and confirmed in the Lutheran church, my uncle who sent me the book is a Lutheran Pastor. If you want a way to defend your faith talk to your church leader, or research opposing views and think of them yourself. But don't use this book, you wont be taken seriously, and you'll seriously insult both yourself and the other person in the debate.

I own a hardback copy of this book and have read it through twice now. If you're tired of living in the stronghold of anything...addiction, pride, greed, jealousy, guilt, insecurity, etc., then pick up a copy of this book. Breaking free from those strongholds doesn't happen overnight. But once you realize how chained you are to the things from which Jesus/God can set you free, you're on your way. I am so very grateful God put this book in my path for I wouldn't take anything for the gift of BREAKING FREE! The word says, "I've come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." I believe it and I'm experiencing that even in the midst of trials. That's what happens when you have a Savior and believe He is who He says He is and believe He can do what He says He can do. So, feeling in bondage? Get this book and let God change your life through it.

When I purchased this book, I was feeling good about my spirituality and the direction I was heading in my life, but I still felt that I was missing a piece of the puzzle. While reading this book I was struck by the realization that some elements of my behavior and thought process were not "just my personality" but areas that God could bless and change for me. I learned while studying this book to let go of some deep past hurts. Hurts that I thought were already gone, but were really bubbling under the surface. This is a great book if you are willing to dig deep into your spirituality with an honest and open heart. I thank Beth for writing such liberating words based in scripture and for caring about people's hearts.
Studying this book moved me to new levels. My life mission is to foster continuous learning, growth and to inspire people to truly tap their God given talents. Beth's book is one very useful tool in this process for people.

He really seems like a very sincere, very energetic young man, but basicly there's nothing new here. Nothing that the Catholics, Lutherans, Prysbiterians, Nazarines, et. al. (who beleve that Jesus is God) aren't doing today (and make DO the main word). I recieved the same message from the Holy Spirit, and the Bible, before I even purchased this. He is 100% correct on one thing. There absolutely needs to be a point of commitment. But this isn't the first person to mention this. Andrew Murray, Oswald Chambers, John Bunyon, and C. S. Lewis at one point or another have said the same thing. If unbelievers are coming to Jesus through this book, great. I hope it sells 100 Million if it brings people to God's saving grace in Jesus Christ. This audiotape was good confirmation that I'm pointed in the right direction (and when I do get to Heaven, I'd love to jam with him. I bet we do great on "Good Shepherd").
I guess Solomon was right. There is nothing new under the sun.

I am happy that this book has inspired some folks to be better people. I just can't agree with some of what the author is suggesting in his book.
A few things...
It sounds like to me he believes in predestination. I don't...I believe that man has the free will to make his or her own good and bad decisions in his life. God gave that to us. If everything is predestinend why bother reading or listening to this book anyway??? Making my own decisions have PREDESTINED my life. I don't think that God made those decisions for me.
The author suggests that God causes thing to happen in our lives...that he uses pain and problems to serve as wake up calls. I can't blame this on God...it's a human condition for Pete's sake! Are the destitute people in Africa really bad people? NO...the circumstances are really bad. And still born babies...abortions...child abuse...wife beating...murder...are those things that God causes? Nope...we're just human.
And how about what you do with the things that God gives us? Do we give it all up to live like Jesus? That's pretty much what he suggests is part of God's plan for us. He may be right! There are places in the Bible that suggest just that. My main concern is that he mentions that saving for retirement is not in God's plan. I may be going to that bad place for it but I'm saving for my retiremnent. My circumstances allow it. I figure what I do with it after I have to stop working is the real question...I hope!
Please don't allow my critique to affect your decision to read the book or listen to this audio version. There are plenty of good things in there that can help you live a good life. There is also more content in there that I don't necessarily agree with but it's not really worth mentioning here.
Buy it and you decide...

This is a great book and reference guide covering the basic teachings of the Christian faith. There are 34 chapters addressing just about all of the basic doctrines of Christianity.
This would be a great book for someone who has been a Christian for a short time to read. By reading a chapter a week, someone could get up to speed on the doctrines of Christianity within nine months. It is a great reference book, too--I read this book years ago but still dip into it from time to time when I want to research a specific topic.
Grudem is a great theologian. He has such an incisive mind--there are many places where he uses "this Scripture doesn't mean A, it doesn't mean B, therefore it must mean C" type reasoning. Everything is so logical and well-thought-out. This material is also very solid, doctrinally.
I especially enjoyed reading his refutation of evolution and his in-depth coverage of the doctrine of justification by faith alone.
Our churches would be in much better shape if everyone in them read this volume.

This book is a concise handbook of theology, condensed from a larger volume, though still broad in scope at 528 pages. As the title suggests, it is about Biblical doctrines, which adhere to, and emerge from the Scriptures, rather than speculative doctrines derived more from man's philosophical suppositions. The author's view is Reformed Theology, upholding and explaining the doctrinal claims of Martin Luther, and John Calvin, etc.; such as TULIP, among others.
This orthodoxy of Biblical interpretation is so refreshing today in light of the rampant liberal doctrines so popularly preached in the modern church. You WON'T find the partial depravity of man, decisional salvation, cheap grace, easy believism, or ineffectual atonement in this text.
Instead, you'll find a concise Biblical exposition on the most important doctrines of Scripture. One of my favorite explanations in this book is the order of salvation: Election, Call, Regeneration, Conversion, Justification, Adoption, Sanctification, Perseverence, Death, Glorification. How satisfying to understand the transformational experience of the new birth. When you understand such things you can become a much more effective witness and give a correct Biblical answer for why you believe what you believe.
This author rightly divides the word. He begins in the right place. The assumptions, or foundational view from which we begin interpretation determines to a large extent the conclusions we draw. So that's why it's so important to get it right, hopefully sooner rather than later. And that's why I recommend the book.

Wayne Grudem does an excellent job categorizing and explaining biblical doctrine. This book is a great study tool for the seminary student, pastors and church leaders, and for the layperson. 'Bible Doctrine' is an excellent compliment to Dr. Grudem's 'Systematic Theology.' This book should be in every Christian's library.

Companion to the book, Captivating, by John and Staci Eldridge. Using the journal as you read the companion book leads to a much more personal and in depth discovery of the reason you were created and greatly enhances the application of the realities presented in the book. It is a journal of self discovery; self in the real sense of the word, as it relates to our purpose, and why we were created, by a loving God.

I have started a women's ministry and we are doing a book study on "Captivating" We have also implemented "Captivating: A Guided Journal" This companion book allows us to discuss in great depth and answer probing questions about who we are as women in our own lives, but more importantly, to our Father. We are still in the first few chapters, but already have been greatly blessed.
I highly recommend both the "Captivating" book and the "Guided Journal."

This book is a classic that has been used in seminary Old Testament classes for two decades. This book is a great resource for anyone interested in Old Testament and comparative religious studies. Victor Matthews is a great scholar who takes the Bible very seriously. What you will find in this book is all the stories of the OT compared to similar stories from pagan mythology. Most books like this just paraphrase these myths or compare them on T-charts to Bible stories with the intention of showing similarities or differences. In this book, you get to read the myths for yourself and make up your own mind about the significance of the parallels. You might also look into the "IVP Bible Background Commentary" which Matthews co-authored. If you are just get started in Old Testament studies, I would also recommend the following:
Bernhard W. Anderson's "Understanding The Old Testament" or Lawrence Boadt's "Reading The Old Testament" and "Ancient Israel" edited by Hershel Shanks. Matthews has also written a good New Cambridge Commentary on Judges & Ruth.

I first read this text when I was taking a course in surveying Ancient Middle Eastern languages and texts. I have however found it to be more interesting for study of ancient religion than linguistics. Many of the myths contain the imagery that Lovecraft should have used to make his terrors more terrible. The authors voices breath the dusts of their deserts and antiquity. They give a window on civilized homes haunted by the twin shades of starvation and inexplicable disease. They show us a world where warfare really meant covering your hands in the blood and entrails of your enemies. As a Sunday School teacher I have turned back to this text often to provide context for understanding the ancient Hebrew's captors, allies, enemies, and neighbors and to understand the wrath of their God's intense jealousy.

"How manifold are thy works! They are hidden before men,
Oh sole God, beside whom there is no other. Thou didst create earth according to thy heart." (Akhenaten hymn /Psalm 104)
TaNaKh in Ancient Texts:
Many ancient texts from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia discovered recently as a result of archaeological excavations, shed light and give various sorts of background information for OT books. Many of these texts provide historical information that clarify our knowledge of ancient biblical times. Some of the ancient texts have literary parallels to biblical narratives and could help students understand literary genres, and reconstruct the parallel culture and thought of ancient east Mediterranean peoples with whom the Hebrews had sojourned.
Those adoptions, parallels or allusions are only confirmations of the active role those Semites developed ultimately their religious thought to monotheism. This faith journey, with numerous contributors from Akhenaten, to Moses, to the prophets is exegetically described as: The history of Salvation.
Hebrew Bible Parallels:
The Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) did not come to expression 'Ex Nihil,' even if still an unconscious belief of many orthodox Jews and fundamental Christians, to come close to the idea of revelation as mechanical dictation. The debate over who wrote the books of the Old Testament and when they were written has raged for over two centuries. While tradition plays a role in answering these questions. Scripture itself makes certain claims about authorship and date. Given in the light of the Exodus, a historical events for Israel; e.g., the Decalogue, when compared with the much older Egyptian Book of the Dead, 'Not have I despised God...Not have I killed...Not have I fornicated...Not have I despoiled the thing of the God...not have I defiled the wife of a man...Not have I cursed God...Not have I borne false witness,' clarifies how humanity pronounced the words of God.
Archaeological finds:
There have been astounding archaeological finds in the regions of Syria and Palestine, Egypt, and Arabia, since the early twentieth century. In relation to religious sites, there has been the identification of temples and shrines. There are several sources for understanding Middle Eastern life and religion, in particular the Egyptian, Canaanite pantheon. Israel was under the powerful influence of Egypt, and later in constant positive and negative contact, with her neighbors, Syria and Babylonia. These sources include the Old Testament, and the discoveries of Tall el-Amarna and Ras Shamra. The studious faithful should not be detracted from seriously considering proven historical data provided by scholars and archaeological finds, to avoid fall off the other side of their hermeneutical vehicle, examining ancient resources availed to us by archaeologists to uncover the ancient thought-world and religious milieu.
The Documents:
I came across those parallels early on, in my dad's catechist style replies to my teenage questions, which I suspect 'The Dawn of Conscience' was his prime source. D. Winton Thomas translated and edited OT scholars in, 'Documents from OT Times' in 1958, and M. coogan rendered, 'stories from ancient Canaan' two decades later. In this expanded edition, Matthews and Benjamin, updated their fresh translation of some famous stories, songs, and laws, in a Biblical chronological order with the OT books, providing some hundred scenes and figures, supplemented by notes that clarify common concepts, and identify where the ancient text was found; few are selected herein:
Story of Balaam:
During 1967 two fragmentary inscriptions, were recovered by H. Franken while excavating in the Jordan valley. 'The story of Balaam,' written in Aramaic, of southern Canaan, in around 700 BC. Balaam, son of Beor appears as a prophet in the Book of Numbers (22:5 - 24:25).
Egyptian Moral Teachings:
Two thousand years separate Ptah-hotep and Amen-em-ope, but their teachings demonstrate the consistency of the Ancient Egyptian world view. The wise was not perfect, only the gods are acknowledged to possess perfection. You could enjoy reading the 'Thirty Chapters' of admonition and knowledge in matthews/ Benjamin; O.T. Parallels.
The Thirty sayings of Amenemope:
Professor Lange of Copenhagen was a pioneer in comparing the teachings of the Egyptian moralist Amenemope (Tenth Century BC), before any of the Old Testament was written, with the Book of Proverbs. In his book 'The Dawn of Conscience', Breasted gives parallels between prophet Jeremiah, who lived in Egypt for sometime, and ancient sayings of Amenemtope. Archaeologists now know that his sayings were translated into Hebrew, and read by the Jewish scribes, before it found its way into the book of Proverbs (22.17 to 24.22)
Hymn to Aton:
James H. Breasted, an outstanding Egyptologist, was the first to compare the 'Hymn to the Sun' written by prophetic Pharaoh Akhenaten, Ca 1300 BC, with Psalm 104 of the Hebrew psalmody, showing the striking parallels.

I had some situations to come upon me, while I was being prayerful and doing God's work and I did not understand. I read this book and applied the Biblical principals expounded on in this book and the situations began to go away and are now completely gone. I am also being totally transformed. Her other book, "Rules of Engagement - Volumes 1 & 2" are also very good in catapulting you to the next level and assisting you in maintaining your stance in God (all bible based - no new wave stuff). The Rules of Engagement: The Art of Strategic Prayer And Spiritual Warfare

After reading this book, I ordered 14 copies of it and passed them out to family, co-workers, and friends. It's that good. My friends also plan to buy additional copies to pass out to those in their sphere of influence. Cindy Trimm does an excellent job of giving you tools that you can put into practice immediately that will yield the positive results you have been longing to experience. You don't have to wade through chapters and chapters of foundational material before you can actually start to reap the benefits of Commanding Your Morning. Even though this book is easy to read and one that you will want to read over and over, slow down and take your time reading it in order to get the maximum effect. It has become part of my daily arsenal. Commanding Your Morning will help you become acutely aware of your thoughts and any negative messages that may have become ingrained in your subconscious. Dr. Trimm will show you how to exchange those thoughts and unleash the power of God in your life. I and my friends have seen significant, positive changes not only in our lives but also in the lives of those in our sphere of influence by practicing the principles that Dr. Trimm teaches. I highly recommend this book.

Do you want your life to be different? All you have to do is command your mind to dream and ask God for guidance. We are reminded in Mark 10:27...that all things are possible through Jesus. Stay focused on God, declare and decree prospectively the life He has intended for you. COMMANDING YOUR MORNING also discusses the creative power of spoken words, how to change your destiny, the importance of ordering your day and how to become an overnight success. Trimm uses biblical examples to provide a new way of focusing your daily walk and reasons to change the words that flow from your mouth and thoughts that form in your mind.
Trimm uses plain language grounded in the Word to assist readers in "unleashing the power of God in your life". COMMANDING YOUR MORNING is firmly rooted in the Word and gives references throughout for you to further investigate. The book ends with over 20 pages of prayers, devotions, declarations and decrees that will open your heart to new understanding of the power of God's word. Do yourself a favor - buy, read, and put the ideas discussed in this book to practice TODAY!

This book has alot of good information but be aware that Dr. Andrew is NOT a medical doctor but a chiropractor. This is misleading in that there are references to his training included in the book, but never mentions that he is a chiropractor. He does mention that people should check with their medical doctors before making some of the changes recommeded in the book and I am glad that he does. There are references to much of the information contained in the book and the overall message is clear, just check with your medical doctor.

My wife and I are fifty-somethings in need of more HDL and less of everything else. We get regular check-ups, eat reasonably well, don't smoke, don't drink, etc. However, we find that our relationship with the doctor is usually symptom-fixing, not prevention. So we bought this book. It's a good book, full of good information on nutrition and health, based in the idea that the body is constantly replacing itself so you want to provide the best materials with which to do it. It collects many of the more recent studies and research findings. Dr. Andrew also pays attention to the important but oft overlooked effects of mind health on bodily health.
BUT, then I find a tip about wearing a magnet to ward off the effects of electromagnetic radiation from your microwave and to increase your energy by "50%". I'm no doctor but I am an electrical engineer with more than a passing knowledge of E-M fields. I read this tip and my heart sank. "Oh great, another New Age quack." (Hint: blood is not magnetic, and even if your microwave was leaking, a magnet wouldn't stop it from shining radio waves on you any more than it would stop a lamp's light.) There are other conclusions, such as the alleged production of trans-fats during cooking with olive oil, that are vigorously disputed by other authorities. In short, Dr. Andrew seems to have assembled a rather mixed bag of the good with the strange, good science with bad science. Would I recommend the book? Yes, because it will lead you to study many things you might have otherwise overlooked and I believe that your health would be much better off by following the advice inside. But do your homework before applying some of it.
