While not the usual, it was enjoyable nonetheless

John Grisham is a talented writer who, even after becoming very predictable, can still tell stories in a manner that quickly captivates the reader. This book is quite a different approach altogether though from his usual lawyer formula. While I kept waiting for something to happen that never happens, I did very much enjoy the wait.

The story opens with the most unlikely of main characters, an NFL third string quarterback who after just having lost the Championship for the Cleveland Browns by throwing three interceptions in the fourth quarter, awakens in a hospital room with a concussion. He quickly learns that the entire city is calling for his head, and he is promptly cut by the team, and out of work. His agent is trying to find his next opportunity and the only one he can find is with an Italian Football team in Parma, Italy.

The remainder of the book is about how the main character adapts to life in Italy and slowly develops at least something of a sense of meaning in his life outside of self interest and doing as little as he can to get by.

The story itself doesn't really have a lot of surprises, and certainly the only mystery is in the expectations I had that there would actually be one. That said, I really enjoyed the book. It has a light breezy feel making it perfect for a lazy summer afternoon of reading. I read the book sitting next to the pool one quick afternoon, and to be honest was disappointed that it ended.

So, if you are looking for a tight suspenseful Grisham formula, you will not find it here. If you want to get a little taste of Italy and the fall and rise of an anti-hero of sorts, then you will enjoy this book as I did. I would agree with other reviewers who said it was basically young adult level, and in fact it reminded me of books I read as a kid. While that may be true I think most of us enjoyed those books and likely enjoyed this one as well, and isn't that the point?

Un-engaging

The best way to describe this book is un-engaging. It seems Grisham overextended his stay in Italy after finishing 'The Broker' and had some time and energy to put together this book about an American football player who is looking for a new beginning.

The story wavers between the ups and downs of the player in a foreign country, learning about the food, the culture and...in reality this is one of Grisham's lows.

Sorry John - you called this one in. You really didn't seem interested in cooking up an interesting recipe- or doing the work. Can a book (or pizza)really be this bland?

This book was well written with a storyline that was easy to believe. I'm not usually much for fiction, but after reading this, I might try more books by Mr. Grisham.

I haven't read a Grisham novel in years but found them to be nicely plotted. albeit dry, thrillers. "Playing for Pizza" however, is an absolute mystery to me. The writing is so simple I truly thought it was designed for the adolescent reader. A linear, simple, predictable plot, one dimensional characters..I could go on. If he didn't have his name attached to it there is no way a book like this would get published.

I am a avid lindsey fan. I have read, and saved every book she has ever writen, half of them hard cover, so when I spend 20 bucks on a book. I at least expect a story. I have to say when I got to the last three pages of the book and she still hadn't bothered to get to anything about her chariters WHO THE BOOK WAS SUPOSE TO BE ABOUT! I was mad! Normally I hate listening to reviews and usually don't put much stock into what is said but I'm so mad that I couldn't sleep. Thought I would just tell you this has got to be the worst book she has ever done. listen to the reviews because they are not pulling your leg.

Lindsey should have written more about the two individuals in the story not jsut the Mallory's history. If you are a follower of this author you already know this information. She did not need to do redo this information.

I was hesitant to buy and read this book since I was so disappointed in Lindsey's previous book involving the Malory family; however, this one was a delightful surprise! I stayed up all night reading it and thought it wasn't my favorite (that would be Gentle Rogue) it still was a great read. I do agree with other reviewers that state that the ending was rushed, Lindsey definitely could have added another chapter to make the conclusion more believable. I hope Lindsey continues the Malory family since for the most part I enjoy reading about them so much!

Thanks for the honest feedback on Johanna Lindsey's latest book. I haven't read her for a while and don't think I'll waste my money on this one. Also, don't bother to read Tailspin, Catherine Coulter, no editing, run-on sentences, little or no punctuation where needed. Storyline is very weak although it starts out strong. I had to keep going back over a paragraph to try and make sense of it. I finally gave up about half way through the thing. Her editor/publisher have a lot to answer for. Don't they use some kind of proofreader............ever heard of spell check or grammar check?! I will never buy one of her books again and that's sad because she used to be better than this. Try Suzanne Brockman if you like good mystery novels. She writes about FBI or CIA agents who have left the force and begun their own companies that investigate and protect people in trouble. There's always a spark between two people and the story lines are good.......straight forward.

This novel both condemned and redeemed itself in the main characters, namely Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. Although extremely sad, the story as a whole truly makes one think: Does love like this exist? How many people have wasted away their lives with the wrong person in order to be "safe"?

Although more dialogue would have made it an easier read, the author's beautiful and flowing descriptions kept me interested. I feel that this book is both a wake-up call/reality check and a wonderful concept for the hopeless romantic.

Oh what a fabulouos book! The imagery in this book will go with me forever. It took me back to a place and time that I'll never be physically, but I feel like I was there and lived through it. The story is very, very sad. So if you are looking for happy endings, this book is not for you. I can't wait to read more of this writers works.

This is the worst book I've ever read. I put it down half way through and read something else. Then I went back to it. Still awful. I shared it with two friends and they couldn't finish it either. It was boring, the writing is terrible and the story is preposterous. Save your money (and time) read anything by Jodi Picoult and enjoy!

One Book You Can Leave on the Shelf

After much fanfare by Oprah Winfrey and several weeks on various bestseller lists, I had high expectations for Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera. However, I found this story to move as slowly as a snail stuck to a glue board. Dense descriptions interfered with the plot.

García Márquez's fifth novel is set in a 19th-century fictional South American port city. A young telegraph operator, Florentino Ariza, carries on a romance--through an exchange of love letters only--with the beautiful but rebellious Fermina Daza. When Fermina's father finds out about the relationship, he sends his teen-aged daughter away.

Upon her later return, Fermina no longer has feelings for Florentino Ariza and marries the respectable Dr. Juvenal Urbino, a man who the reader is twice told likes to eat asparagus and smell the odor of it in his urine.

Despite being spurned by Fermina, Florentino Ariza continues to pine for her for over 50 years, on occasion almost stalking her. He claims to be saving himself for Fermina but has affairs with hundreds of women. During this period, the reader is often treated to Florentino's intestinal ailments and his need for enemas.

At one time, Florentino considers pursuing his secretary, Leona Cassiani, and she him, but when she is raped on the beach by an unknown assailant who, we are told, provided her with the best sex she ever had, she no longer has any desire to bed Florentino Ariza. Instead, she walks the beach at night hoping her rapist will ravish her again. As a woman, I was insulted by this passage in the novel, a passage only a man could write. And I was shocked that Oprah Winfrey, a woman who has been so open about her own sexual abuse, could recommend a story in which a character felt this way.

Quill says: Don't bother taking Love in the Time of Cholera to the seashore this summer; it's one book you can leave on the shelf.

Several people have indicated that this is a difficult read. It is. Perhaps it's the translation, perhaps it's the abundance of imagery. But whatever it is, it's worth the effort.

Having read One Thousand Years and The Handsomest Drowned Man, I'm familiar with his use of prose and magical realism tendencies. If you can get past the linguistic hurdles, you're in for a wonderful story of the commitment of one man's heart.

This is a novella from the Karen Moning books that feature characters from the MacKeltar storyline. All I can say is...READ THIS BOOK! It is a great mixture of magic, highlands, passion & humor. The characters are well developed and get you itching to read the rest of the MacKeltar books (#1 "Kiss of the Highlander" - (Drustans story),#2 "Dark Highlander" (drustans twin), #3 "Immortal Highlander" (Adam Black - side character interacting w/ MacKeltars), #4 "Spell of the Highlander" (part of MacKeltar clan), #5 "Highlander's Touch" (seperate story linked w/ Adam Black), #6 "Into the Dreaming" - a novella that features the fairy queen mentioned in the other books. NOTE: This is my suggestion for the order to read them in. There is not real official order in which to read them. All I know is once you finish this book, you will be itching to read the rest. ENJOY!!!

Wow...an excellent read with Jane Sillee & Aedan MacKinnon, a union of soul mates with her given only thirty days to make him remember their inseparable tie or lose him forever to Unseelie King as Vengeance. Sometimes a short, humorous, cleaver story of the best romance is all we have time for in this busy world. I, for one, inquired as to how any pages to expect when I purchased it...no surprise there. This is a well written story of a fantastic time and place. I highly recommend this and all Karen Marie Moning. I will, no doubt, read this one a dozen more times.

Again Debbie Macomber has a winner on Blossom Street. Easy read, entertaining with a few surprises along the way. I love the way her books continue and remain tied together at the same time like real life. Her characters are real, with real problems and real solutions, not every one is mega rich with high powered jobs. Ordinary people living lives that are interesting and real.

Lydia Goetz has decided it's time to hold another beginners' knitting class at her store A Good Yarn and the lesson this time is prayer shawls. Two new students and two friends sign up and they all have their own stories to tell.

Susannah Nelson, owner of the flower shop on Blossom Street joins, as does her new employee Colette Blake. Colette has secrets about why she has come to town. Recently losing her husband in a fluke accident then having a fling with her boss after her husband's death that results in a pregnancy, she fled when she found some disturbing information about her boss Christian Dempsey.

Alix Townsend, who made her first appearance in The Shop on Blossom Street, also joined the class and is planning her wedding to young adult pastor Jordan Blake. Jordan's mother Susan and Alix's mentor Jacqueline are going crazy planning a huge wedding that is nothing like what Alix desires.

Then there's Margaret, Lydia's sister who has worries of her own. Her daughter Julia is the victim of a carjacking and the resulting stress is tearing the family apart. Julia is struggling with her terror at what happened and Margaret is angry and seeking justice.

Lydia is truly the heart and soul of Blossom Street and A Good Yarn. While she always plays a key role in the books, this time her story is toned down to give more time to dedicate to the others. She does however get her turn as we see her struggle with the ramifications that her bouts with caner may very well have destroyed her chances and adding to the small family she and Brad created with their marriage.

Margaret's tale is a disturbing one that really hits home with readers. After the car jacking, Margaret's life becomes consumed with finding justice, no matter what needs to be done. Julia is severely traumatized by what happened and her mother's anger and quest for vengeance are only making things worse. The result is their entire family is being torn apart. Margaret needs her sister and their friends more than ever right now as they try to help her understand that her anger is only making things worse. Margaret runs through a whole string of emotions as she tries to come to terms with what happened.

Readers who have been with the Blossom Street books from the beginning will remember the surly young woman Alix Townsend once was. She has blossomed under the love of Jordan and is a completely different woman now, though her insecurities about her life are never far from her thoughts. As they are planning their wedding, Alix changes from the happy young woman in love to a severely stressed girl who is terrified about going through with the wedding. A small private ceremony is more her style but Jacqueline and Jordan's mother are turning the wedding into a circus. The resultant stress nearly tears Alix and Jordan apart until her friends help her come to terms with what the wedding is really about - celebrating the love and marriage of two people who found each other with God's grace.

Newcomer Colette makes a significant impact on the women of Blossom Street as well. Her entire life at present is a confusing mess of emotions and fears. She mourns her dead husband and feels guilty about her feelings for Christian. At the same time, she is afraid of Christian when she uncovers details on her computer that lead her to believe he is involved in the trafficking of illegal aliens. How could she have any kind of tender feelings for a man committing such a crime? However, she does and every single day she is torn between longing to see him, wishing they could be together and determination to avoid him at all costs because of his crimes. I know I sure found myself hoping she was wrong about him so they could find peace and get together as they are meant to be.

Back on Blossom Street is another great emotional story. Debbie Macomber always makes me cry, a master of bringing out my deepest emotions with heart wrenching stories. She truly gets what makes relationships work between women and we see that wisdom on every single page. Here on Blossom Street, every character feels like a long time friend of mine and I eagerly anticipate catching up on their lives. I hunger for each new story in the series and Back on Blossom Street whets my appetite for Twenty Wishes, next to come.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series But this one has a different reader (I have it on CD) The actress reading is terrible. Her voices pretty much sound the same especiall since she seems to think that all the men should have gravelly voices. They sound like a bad obscene phone call. Actually one of the women characters sounds that way too. Get another actress!!

I've got all the dark-hunter series books and while I love all 11 (though SK did have a lull around books 9 & 10), this is by far my favourite. My sister, best friend and I were talking about this book during a girls night the other saturday.... If you're larger than average, plainer than average, have an illness/disability/are less than physically "acceptable" don't you have the fantasy of some wonderful man who sees past that to the woman inside? Even in fiction it doesn't happen too often, which one would think would be the easiest place to find it - after all fiction, especially romance fiction is really all about fantasy. Well Sherrilyn Kenyon is one who does it. In Talon & Sunshine's story we get a rather curvy girl and here in Vane & Bride story she takes it one step further, specifying an actual size 18 heroine.

Bride is lovely - tall, pretty and rubinesque with a good heart. She's also got a few foibles about a drop dead gorgeous man falling so quickly for her. But, fall Vane does - he's been slightly obsessed with her since seeing her some 8 months before this book begins (see afore mentioned Talon's story). Vane is just about perfect: he's gorgeous, madly in love with woman Bride is, gentle with a woman while delightfully randy at the same time, and protective of her to the point that he's prepared to walk away and live the years of the rest of her life celibate rather than dragging her into his rather dangerous dysfunctional world. I just love his explanation of the difference between love vs lust.

I adore the characters in this story, who wouldn't want to be part of Bride's circle of friends (the knee-capping offer particularly amused me). Bride's lovely mum, dad and brother, even her slightly nasty sister ring true in the way of family dynamics (my relationship with my sister was a bit like that for quite a few years). The "wolf boys" (Vane, Fang & Fury) are fantastic, comical and heartwarming. (An aside... Can't wait for more of these yummy guys stories).

I do not agree with the reviewers claiming Bride's too whiney etc about her size - anyone with the slightest concerns of self image would have a few worries with the start of a new relationship and I love the way Bride gains confidence through the progression of the story - to the point of a knock-down-drag-out confrontation with Vane's rather psychotic mother. Go girl!

Read this book. It might just make you giggle, get teary-eyed and believe that we all deserve a happy ever after.

Though she throws in a few cameos of characters from previous books, Jackie Collins pulls us into a new sphere with new characters in this novel. Cameron Paradise is a personal trainer with dreams. After escaping her abusive husband in Hawaii, Cameron is working at an exclusive club in LA with an ever-increasing stable of satisfied clients. The newest is talk show sensation Don Verona, a handsome Lothario who immediately becomes intrigued with Cameron when she deflects his advances. Don's best friends are successful screenwriter Phil Specter, a philanderer with a retired movie star wife who wants to restart her career, and Ryan Lambert, an unhappily married indie movie producer whose wife is the daughter of megabucks blockbuster producer Hamilton Heckerling. Ryan started his marriage enthusiastically enough, but over the past few years, Mandy has become more and more unbearable with her Hollywood snobbery and refusal to accept his family. Ryan starts thinking about divorce, but every time he tries to bring it up, circumstances put a stop to his plans.

Cameron is enjoying her early morning sessions with the charming Don Verona, and even though she keeps turning him down, she finds herself intrigued. That she and Ryan Lambert fall instantly in love when they meet complicates things, but since Ryan is married and off limits anyway, Cameron allows herself to be charmed by Don while she and her friend Cole quit their jobs to start their own fitness center. Cameron is so distracted by her unexpected and unwanted feelings for Ryan, it slips her mind to tell Don about her not-quite ex-husband Gregg, but Gregg has not forgotten about her.

It's business as usual in Tinseltown. The one exception is the dark and tragic Anya, who was orphaned at a young age and watched her fate slide from bad to worse at the hands of depraved men and women who would steal her humanity. She's quite a contrast to the other, smoothly glittering characters, but her story in particular really drives the book and gives it depth.

Jackie Collins may not be synonymous with classics, but her books always make me keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next. She also writes with a well-honed sense of irony that always makes me chuckle. Her books are always good, but this one was exceptional, the best she's written in years.

1ST off all of the main characters were all great and interesting, some writers are guilty of writing books with lots of characters to keep people interested in the book and what you end up getting is a whole mess of people and you wonder why are they in the book. Well Jackie isn't guilty, all of her characters made the story jive and they all played important parts in it,loved how she linked them all together ....and the storyline WOW...I loved jackie's brain in this book. very wonderful i would highly recommend it. it's a definate page turner and you'll love it until the very end. the only thing i wish is that she couldve written a steamy sex scene for cameron and ryan, other than that this book is SMACKALICIOUS..smack your mother good. Her characters have such character. LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT!

Lora Leigh's Bound Hearts series never fails to deliver. Wicked Sacrifice includes both Wicked Intent(book 4) and Sacrifice(book 5). Both stories are steaming hot and leaves you wanting even more. It always amazes me when Lora Leigh is able to write such detailed characters even in a short story.

Here is a brief synopsis of the two novellas:

Wicked Intent: Control has meant everything to Tally Raines. Control of the office she ran as Jesse Wyman's secretary, and now control of Lucian Conover's office as well. But Lucian isn't content to be controlled by his fiery secretary. As a matter of fact, Lucian thinks she needs to loosen up and let the sexy, sensual woman hiding beneath her cool exterior free. And he will dare her to do just that...With a little help.

Sacrifice: Kimberly has run from Jared for a year now, sensing the weakness he could be to her future. But she never expected the sacrifice he would make for her. One that will rock her soul, and destroy the very foundations of all her beliefs.

Her sexuality, her heart, and all she's fought for in the last six years will be tested when an assignment takes her to Jared's farm, and into his bed. There she will learn the true meaning of hunger, of love...as well as the deception and the lies that have governed her life for so long.

Anything worth having is worth sacrificing for. Kimberly is about to find out if she can pay the price, and risk not only the inheritance that should be hers, but also her heart to the one man who can still the fires that rage in her soul.
*******
If you've read any of Lora Leigh's Bound Hearts books, you know what you'll be getting: lots and lots of steamy sex (including menages), not as much plot. But what plot(s) that are here in these novellas are interesting and revolve around the exclusive men's club outside of D.C. where the men have extreme sexual appetites and often share their women.

In "Wicked Intent", sassy personal assistant Tally Raines now works (and lusts) for Lucien Conover. Tally is used to controlling her men and her passion. But Lucien will have none of that. He wants to break through Tally's control and he uses his twin brother Devril to help him. After all, the brothers "share" everything. Will Tally agree and submit?

In "Sacrifice", US Senator's daughter Kimberly Madison has been running from the attraction she feels for her stepbrother Jared Raddington for a year. Kimberly is a rare female member of The Club, and she does everything sexually that she can with one exception: she must keep her virginity intact for at least 5 more years in order to inherit the long held multi million dollar family estate her late mother left to her. If she doesn't, her estranged father will inherit all. Are Kimberly's feelings for Jared stronger than her family legacy? Or will Jared be willing to sacrifice for her and wait?

Both of these books are pretty hot, fast paced reads, and some of the subject matter is not for the faint of heart. These books can stand alone, but due to a lot of overlapping characters, they will be less confusing and more enjoyable if read in the correct order. They are "Surrender"(from "Ties That Bind"), "Submission/Seduction", "Wicked Sacrifice", "Shameless Embraces" and "Forbidden Pleasure".

Hot, Hot, Hot!

I love janet evanovich, I have read all the books in this collection, this is by far my least favorite. Not all together terrible, just not nearly as good as the others.

An Enjoyable Read

If you're looking for a unique set of characters, a mild mystery and spicy sexual tension, you've come to the right place. Louisa Brannigan has the most obnoxious and rude neighbor. He steals her morning paper, parks in her spot and his phone rings at all hours of the night. Despite all of his flaws, Pete Streeter is a fine male specimen, and that is what creates such an internal battle for Louisa. When her car is demolished by a bunch of thugs and she loses her job as a Congressional aid to Senator Nolan Bishop, she teams up with Streeter to get to the bottom of the conspiracy that led to it all. A missing pig! Filled with flirtation, a simple plot and zany mystery, Janet Evanovich gives her fans a very enjoyable read. A precursor to the successful Plum series, Naughty Neighbor contains all the aspects that make Evanovich such a successful writer and a pleasure to read: a sassy female lead, a chauvinistic yet sexy male, a simple mystery and sexual tension spread throughout the pages. Naughty Neighbor is a quick read, perfect for the beach or a night alone. Valerie Jones mrsvaljones@netzero.net

Louisa Brannigan lived a quiet orderly life until the morning her neighbor Pete Streeter stole her morning newspaper. Tired of him taking advantage of her whether it was parking in her parking place, hogging the community laundry room dryer, or the obnoxious calls in the wee hours of the morning, but the last straw was his theft of her paper. She knocked loudly on his door yelling at him in the process, and he chose to ignore her. Furious that he could totally disregard her, she grabbed her broom and started banging on the ceiling. When Pete went to confront Louisa, he found her door wide open and walked right in to settle her down. He was stunned by how attractive she was, as was she because she was expecting some neanderthal.

When Louisa and Pete found themselves being shot at that night, he quickly pulled her under his protection, but circumstances only got worse from there. He was attacked in his apartment in the middle of the night, and she was fired from her job as press secretary to Senator Noland Bishop just because she knew Pete. Feeling that something was smelly in Washington, he convinced Louisa to help him investigate. Pete thought it would be interesting to base his next screenplay on because he could just feel a scandal waiting to be uncovered. He just hoped he could keep Louisa safe, and in the process convince her that they were perfect for each other.

I have read most of her earlier works, and this is the best of them. Louisa is a very funny character, and was perfectly paired with Pete. They are charming together.

This is typical Janet Evanovich. It is a quirky romance that has you laughing out loud. Not as good as the Stephanie Plum books but a great read.

The Wheat's really know what they are talking about...and it was fun to read with my new husband. I would recommend this book to everyone, not just Christians, who are about to make the jump to wedded bliss. Probably better to read a month before the wedding...otherwise that first night can be like fumbling around in the dark. Highly recommended.

Wonderful and educational

This book is wonderful! I bought it just prior to my wedding. It is a bit like going back to middle school sex-ed, but it proved invaluable for the honeymoon. The authors deal expertly, honestly, and sensitively about the subject.

Too cut and dry....

I didn't like this book. It's well written, but really makes some statements that can't be backed up with the Bible. Everything is cut/dry. This is this way because we think it should be this way. I would go to some other book.

Extremely Informative!!!

Ladies, (especially Christian ladies) this book is the one you've been looking for. It's very professionally done (meaning it's not crude or offensive) and it's very informative!!!! It also has an excellent section for women trying to get pregant with info O B Gyn offices and Fertility clinics won't tell you!!! Tons of info from Doctor's!!! Check it out! Brenda R

Great Resource! Very clinical

The many reviews I read before purchasing this book are correct: This is a very clinical and sometimes dry book. It's also a fantastic resource. But honestly, if you are interested in learning the basics, you shouldn't have a hard time getting through it.

I really enjoyed this book and the emphasis on the clinical explanations of how things work. Ed Wheat is a doctor and that comes out in his technical explanations, which are especially helpful if you are having some problems in your sex life.

I would have given it 5-stars (it really is a great book) except I purchased another book as well, Getting your Sex Life Off to a Great start, and I found the other book a bit better in its explanation of the first sexual experience as well as its advice for the honeymoon.

If you are preparing for your first experience I recommend buying both books. Each book offers something that the other lacks. If you can only purchase one, I recommend the other, but both are really great resources. We are also reading through Love Life for Every Married Couple and it is important to work on all aspects of your relationship - not just the sexual aspect.
