This is the book I enjoyed less in the series, in part because I think it was a little early for Rio's HEA.
Rio is the cavern of the Ancient to destroy it, but he plans to kill himself. There he meets Dylan, a reporter who is travelling with some friends of her mother instead of her, because her mum is ill. Dylan takes photos and sends them to her boss, starting problems.
The development of the Ancients plot is very interesting, but the relationship between Rio and Dylan didn't satisfy me. Although they make a good couple, it was very sudden. They didn't touch me as the previous couples. Also, the apparition of Eva in form of a ghost was a little unnerving.
There is also something that bothered me a little. Rio sometimes uses Spanish words or phrases, and some of them were incorrect. It's not something important to the story, but it's annoying when you know the language. It would have been better to have someone knowledgeable in Spanish check on them before publishing.

Follow Up Does NOT Disappoint True Paranormal Romance Fans

When I am in the mood for a paranormal romance, especially one featuring vampires, I prefer ones with an alpha male figure as the protagonist. And while Lara Adrian's vampires are not as "alpha" as say J. R. Ward's vampires -- they have a softer side which is also endearing and fits the plots of her stories.
If you have been following the series, this book is about Rio who is the vampire who got "jacked up" in the explosion in a previous novel.
The story is basically about him finding a reason to live and move on with his life, forgive the sins of the past, and find love again. I think it's the find love again part that was a hard sell for me at first.
I like my vamps to be one-woman guys. Either their soulmate or die! So when Rio found a new love interest in this book (which of course I knew it would be) I wanted to see how the author would play it out.
She did a good job. And I actually found this book to be a great read - and more importantly it delivered just what I expected from the author (unlike Ward's Phury novel). A great paranormal romance with a great continuing (soap opera style) subplot.
If you are new to the series, start from the beginning. But if you have been reading the series and you were just double-checking to see if you should even bother with this title - please do!

Couldn't have asked for a better story. I have loved this whole series and was thrilled that Rio's story was out. Dylan was a great character and really held her own in this story. And Rio was . . . well, just Rio. Struggling to adjust after almost being killed, being scarred for life, and having been betrayed by a woman he had loved. To find someone like Dylan was just perfect for him. I'm not sure why some of the people think Dylan wasn't very smart. Terrific story. Can't wait for the next one.
Another great book!!!

This book is about Rio, the vampire who ended up half burned and half crazed by the betrayal of his Breedmate. In this book he meets with Dylan, a Breedmate who sees ghost and sees the ghost of Eva, Rio's dead Breedmate, who asks of her to rescue Rio.
The book is very much in the style of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, and I loved it. The only thing that I would like is that when Rio talks in Spanish the Spanish was well-written, because it had some flaws.

This book is much better than the 1st book. The characters are more developed and the book is full of action. The story flows much better also. The first book felt choppy and contrived and very High School. This book is just way better.

I kind of agree with the two previous reviewers, there is a lot of sexuality in this...but wait...isn't that what an erotica book is all about? I think it is a fun, sexy and intriguing book. Add it to your collection and you'll be happy. I've recently added this book, Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, and Paco Santiago's Endless Pursuits, all three of which have kept me daydreaming.....yummy.
Great from start to finish

Julie is the most beautiful girl in the world but oh so prude. She doesn't even want to enjoy sex with her soon to be husband.
Little does she know what is in store for her. Her fiances friend has big plans for her (even bigger then his large member) Soon she is putting out and servicing everyone all with the final result that Dave is the happiest man in the world once they are married!!
Get this book but keep at least one hand free so that you can pleasure yourself while you read; better yet have a loved one read it to you and pleasure yourself and them at the same time.

I found this book to be some of the better written erotica I have come across in quite a while. It is one thing to have a decent short story, but it is another to be able to carry the plot line long enough for a novella or short novel. The basic premiss of the book is somewhat stupid, but like an erotic film - are you really watching it for the plot?
I found the characters somewhat one dimensional at times, but then again, this is not a book by Dostoeyski. It is a fun read to get ones jollies to and it accomplishes that task.
If you like erotica, if you like group get ons, then this is a book you would probably enjoy.

What can I say about this book? It's filthy, it's vile, it's uncompromising, it's disgusting, and it's disturbing. It's taboo in EVERY way, AND...it's one pretty quick read, also.
In a word, it's PERFECT!!!
Dave thought he had it ALL. But then, his buddy Charlie set his ass straight. And then together, they sent Dave's love Julie down the road of complete sexual EXCESS. This book is phenomenal, IMHO.
It pulled together many things in my head that I have always wanted to see written about, and it put it all together in a way that is intelligent and honest. Mr. Chesterfield writes about Julie (near the end), 'A lot of people would not like the way she was, but she didn't care.' He tempers this though, by adding, 'Most people can't handle honesty especially when it deals with human honesty and desire." I know for a FACT that this is GOSPEL.
This book breaks MANY socially accepted norms, but does so with the undercurrent of THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH SEEKING OUT YOUR OWN PLEASURE AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT HURTING ANYONE.
Charlie and Dave DON'T turn Julie out just to turn her into a slut...they do it to help her enjoy life more, which she (and many others) does because of this.
Julie: "I'm kind of mad at myself because of all I was missing out on."
The Librarian: "People really limit themselves by not considering all of their options..." is the TRUE undertone of this novel. People DO limit themselves, and not just sexually, within the IMAGINARY confines of what is PERCIEVED to be 'Normal' (I know I have), and I'm SICK of it.
Who says a book about sex and 'perversions' (although happy ones) can't change your life, and make you see things in a new (and MUCH more enjoyable) way.
To Mr. Chesterfeild, if you ever read this, I want you to know that I have TWO copies of this book. The digital version was just NOT enough for me; I just HAD to have it in my hands to be able to read it again and again and again (and I've read it FOUR TIMES already) it's THAT good.
Be prepared to have what you BELIEVED to be 'normal' living challenged, because, THIS BOOK is NOT about to take ANY prisoners of your preconceived notions of life, in general.

Turned out is a new term for me and one that is perfectly understandible especially after reading this wonderfull book. Its kind of every guy/girls fantasy rolled up into one story and you cannot put it down. I have had conversations with people about said book and truly believe girls who are sluts, but some one you can bring home to mom, would save numerous marriages. Not to be hypocritical, but if guys acted this way a bit it would probably make things better in a relationship.
I highly recommend this smart and erotic smut for any one who enjoys new and exciting stories.

I use this book in working with couples planning to marry or when couples struggle, and they ALWAYS find answers. Gottman's style is respectable and accessible for "everyman," while still maintaining heady content for professionals. I recommend it for couples looking to learn better fighting styles and communication patterns, for pastors and professionals who work with couples in trouble, and for people trying to set the rules before they actually play the game. Great text!

John Gottman is a respected expert on relationships who has done extensive research with married couples over the past two decades to determine why couples stay together or part. Although Gottman's book is about marriage, it also has some excellent insights for understanding some of the important dynamics of long-term courting relationships. The book provides many exercises, quizzes, techniques and tips to understand and improve courting relationships.
Gottman notes that his years of research show that a lasting marriage results from a couple's ability to resolve the conflicts that are inevitable in any relationship. He also notes that there are three different styles of conflict resolution that healthy couples usually adopt. They are: the validating marriage (couples compromise and calmly work out their problems attempting to satisfy both people), the conflict-avoiding marriage (couples agree to disagree and rarely confront issues head on), and the volatile marriage (couples conflict often and the results are passionate disputes).
John Gottman also discusses what he calls "The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse." These are the dangerous ways of interacting that sabotage attempts to communicate. They are criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling.
Well written and informative, Gottman's research has uncovered some worthwhile and thought provoking ideas on long-term relationships. Understanding these concepts can be helpful when trying to understand oneself and when exploring long-term compatibility with a companion.
I found many useful concepts throughout the book. Overall a powerful work on strenthening relationships!

This book was recommended by our Marriage Counselor. We went through counseling 5 years ago, and have had a wonderful marriage ever since. This book (at least ideas from it), helped tremendously... but you have to read it together, open up your mind to all ideas, take it to heart, and be willing to change.

I've heard so much about the Anita Blake books, and now I've satisfied my curiosity by reading the first of the series. Tersely written, tightly paced, it's fairly entertaining horror action, though nothing spectacular. Might be too graphic for some people, and I can't say I'm interested enough to continue the series, but Anita certainly takes no prisoners in this first installment. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a romance. That might end up happening later, but this first book is all about the action.

I'm currently up to book 6 in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. I know, this is supposed to be a review for only Guilty Pleasures, but it is difficult to review one without the others.
I was recommended the series by a shop assistant while on holidays, and I haven't stopped reading them since. I think the series is excellent because I'm currently 21 and too old for the young adult section and too young for the adult section. The Anita Blake series fits me perfectly.
Main character Anita is strong and witty, and I love her relationship with Jean-Claude. The writing style is easy to follow and get into, and the story lines are very interesting.
I would recommend this series of books to anyone my age with an interest in the paranormal.

The first time I read this book, I was fascinated and scandalized and I could feel my literary horizons opening further with every page. It was fresh, it was innovative. It was naughty and nice all at the same time. Almost fifteen years and lots of knock-off and me-too series later, Laurell K. Hamilton is still the queen of the supernatural for me. Nobody writes those scary, erotic beasties like she does. Sexy vampires, powerful werewolves, compelling shapeshifters, and, my favorite character, one intriguing scary SOB assassin.
Ms. Hamilton has an amazing ability to "up the ante" with every book. The first chapter of every book thrusts us into a grade of peril one step above what we faced in the last book. The powers of her heroine grow with every challenge, and her personality undergoes subtle changes from book to book. Every time her established principles clash with what she knows is the right thing, or simply what she desires, she loses a little more of her humanity.
Guilty Pleasures is the first book in a series that you'll want to read over and over. I certainly did, and I can say that of only two other series; Anne McCaffrey's dragonrider saga (though it's been a long time since I outgrew that one) and Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books.

The characters were not believable or relatable. The story is scattered and silly. I will not ridicule anyone for enjoying these books but I won't be buying anymore and I won't allow anyone I know to make the same mistake I did.

Set in modern day St. Louis we are introduced to an earth similar to our own, yet vastly different in the descriptions of its denizens. Alongside humans vampires, werewolves, zombies, and various other mythical phantasmagoria exist, all of which are grudgingly accepted by the American government. In this unique yet hauntingly similar rendition of modern day earth, Anita Blake professed animator (necromancer) and sworn vampire hunter lives. Known to the vampire community as The Executioner, Anita is both feared and revered. When a rash of murders occur, in which each case a master vampire (this being an especially strong and ancient vampire) is brutally slain, the remaining master vampires experience concern over their impending fate. Finding themselves in desperate need for a consummate investigator, the vampires abduct Anita's friend Catherine and threaten her life. If Anita does not discover the murderous culprit, Catherine will die horribly. Forced to investigate, Anita begins sleuthing leading her deep into the murky world of the undead. Will Anita survive or will she be the newest zombie addition to the community?
Consummate zombie raiser, vampire slayer, and witty protagonist Anita instantly catapults the reader into her unique world where the bizarre and disturbing freely stalk the streets. Despite the more absurd elements of her personality, most notably the fact that her daily career is to raise the dead, Anita is portrayed as a very realistic lifelike character therefore allowing her personality to come alive. Her witticisms, even when faced with extreme danger, proved refreshing and instantly caused the reader to form a deep bond with this feisty animator who readily sees the humor in every situation.
The other characters introduced during Guilty Pleasures were immediately entertaining, both the protagonists and antagonists. The charismatic Jean-Claude, master vampire and owner of the seedy vampire club, Guilty Pleasures, proved a unique and captivating character that the reader hopes to see more of in the future. The psychopathic Edward, fellow vampire slayer who feels that killing and maiming should be a touted hobby, was expertly woven into the story creating tension between himself and the main character that never failed to maintain the reader's devoted attention. And, most notably, the main Master Vampire of the city of St. Louis, Nikolaos, was the quintessential villain; terrifying and suave simultaneously, often indulging in mood swings from the childish to the extremely violent, each scene dedicated to Nikolaos was heart stopping and entrancing, keeping the reader glued to the page helplessly experiencing the tension and terror radiated by the thousand year old Master Vampire through Anita's vivid descriptions.
Despite the absurdities of Anita's world, which some may falsely believe to compromise the ingenuity of the tale, Guilty Pleasures was so well presented and vivid as to make the reader believe in Anita's world as though the idea of vampires and zombies truly existing was acceptable and perhaps even normal. This ability to make an incongruous world come to life and achieve a realistic aura in the reader's mind is surly a sign of true excellence that few novels achieve. This particular aspect is one of the most remarkable attributes of Guilty Pleasures.
The combining of several elements namely horror and mystery created a distinctive atmosphere that surrounded this novel. The identity of the murderer who was surreptitiously slaughtering master vampires remained hidden until in a shocking scene Anita suddenly realizes, when faced with a life and death situation, who the killer really is and why they feel the need to horrifically slaughter those who are already deceased. This continuance of a compelling mystery added relevance and enjoyment to the story effectively combining the fundamentals of horror, the supernatural, and mystery.
The effortless writing style was personal and conversational allowing the reader to enter into Anita's mind and experience her world first hand. This approach lent great value to the tale and enabled the reader to fully sympathize with Anita and vicariously indulge in her emotional dilemmas.
To conclude, the creative world of Anita Blake is a world the reader will want to continue to visit. The compelling characters, effective combination of various literary elements, and the general uniqueness of the tale all weave together to create a great work that is sure to entertain and entrance leading the reader ever deeper into the dark world of Anita and her undead companions. Dare you indulge in Guilty Pleasures?

I've read all of Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb's books and this is one of my favorites for the In Death Series. If you haven't read any of them I would suggest you start at the beggining (Naked in Death) and make your way from there. I'm sure you won't be able to get enough. All the books are absolutely amazing and you just fall in love with Eve and Roarke and everything they go through together.

An off-duty cop has been killed in Roarke's Club, Purgatory, and as Eve unravels the mystery, not only does she find bad cops, but one of Roarke's oldest and deadliest enemies, Max Ricker. Ricker wants to destroy Roarke and what better way then using Eve. And as the story unfolds, the body count rises as more cops turn up dead, but why? Is it a vendetta or something more sinister? You won't be necessarily surprised, but you will love the character and plot development.
On top of everything else, while trying to solve the murder, Eve begins to have memories about her childhood, and realizes that Max Ricker has ties to her disturbing past. She is extremely surprised to find that Roarke's oldest enemy probably knew what her father was doing to her in Dallas, and made no attempts to stop him. (In later installments, you find that Roarke and Eve's lives were intertwined long before they met, since childhood. Both of their fathers knew each other and were involved in criminal enterprises. So, it would seem that Roarke and Eve were destined to be together.)
In summary, I think this novel is one of my favorites in the series. Not only did we see Roarke "lose his cool", but we get to see how he feels about the appearance of Eve's past lover, Webster (an internal affairs detective who appears to know more than he is willing to say). I think it was nice to see Roarke "off stride" for a change. I will also say that one disadvantage for me is that I am not reading the series in order, so I am not sure if what I am about to say is relevant. What I would have like to read is a story about how Ricker's son (who was mentioned a lot) handles the fact that Eve and Roarke stopped his lunatic father? I think that would be a wonderful story and an interesting villian in a future story.

A stale plot is made masterfully refreshing in the hands of one of the greatest writers to ever put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard as the case may be).
Nora Roberts (writing as J.D. Robb) takes the tale of "cop killers" to new heights of suspense in the futuristic Eve Dallas series. Readers are taken on a journey into an imagination as vivid and lively as any Walt Disney movie. The difference, of course, being that Walt Disney only killed the parents of cartoon animals whereas Robb expertly tackles a more real world (if futuristic) human death. The imaginative effect is nonetheless incredible!

I'm a huge fan of this series, but I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as the others. I have to agree with another reviewer that said that the identification of the killer was so abrupt that it almost left me wondering if I missed some pages or something. I think that Roarke's behavior in this book became a little annoying. And I did not like the angry sex scene in this book. These two are always so loving with each other that it seems way too out of the ordinary. It's also starting to wear on me that Roarke has his nose in every little thing that Eve does. Give me a break! He should be more of a peripheral character than being thrust into the middle of every mystery.

Kell, the hero, is by far my favorite of the Durango team. I just love that Cajun accent! But Emily, the heroine, is my least favorite. Her constant whining, for lack of a better word, and her inability to stand up to her father were irritating to say the least. But the suspense in this book was great! A definite recommended read.

This book is the best so far in Lora Leigh's Tempting SEAL's series. It had just the right amount of danger, sensuality, and intrigue. What made it stand out from the other books in the series (excluding Wildcard) is the framework of actual love and caring between the two main characters, Kell and Emily.
I loved that Emily was not another tall, blonde, stick-thin character and that Kell- ripped, hard, sexy man- still fell for her.
Definitely looking forward to the next installment in the series.

This was the first book I read in the Tempting Seals series. I LOVED it and can honestly say after reading all of the others that it is my favorite! I found the characters of Emily and Kell to be a perfect match. The characters were in depth (as are all of the characters in the Seal's series) and the sparks flew anytime they were together in the same room. I just recently discovered Lora's books and have read as many as I can get my hands on! I've stuck mainly with the Tempting Seals series and the Nauti boy series. Kudo's for wonderful characters with depth and chemistry.

Robyn Carr just seems to bring out the best in me. Her writing style is remarkable and she once again hits on life in the small town of Grace Valley and centers on the life of Dr. June Hudson whom we came to love in Deep in the Valley.
There is just so much to love about this novel but the one that I find interesting is that June's in love with a man no one in the "nosey" town of Grace even knows exist and she can't tell anyone, not even her father, as her lover happens to an undercover DEA agent.
If you're expecting a novel filled with violence and sex, this isn't the novel for you. But if you're looking for a novel about caring and sharing, where people actually

Grace Valley physician Dr. June Hudson awaits the return of her secret lover, DEA agent Jim Post, and gets a shock when her first love, Jim Forrest (yeah, two leading men named Jim...) returns to town divorced and ready to resume their relationship with his rowdy teenage sons in tow. Since she has remained single, everyone in town assumes she'll take up with Forrest, but she'd rather wait for the other Jim. When mysterious bones turn up, finally the small town has something else to keep them occupied besides her love life.
Not realizing that this story was part of a series, I was at a disadvantage. Undeveloped characters kept popping up in the story, and felt out of place. One main character was absent throughout most of the novel. And the romance itself was minimal. When compared to her later novels like "Never too Late," this one just falls short at 2.5 stars.

What this reader knows--and delightedly so--is that he has discovered a wonderful way to get his suspense fix in Laura Lippman. This was my first book by her, picked up purely on the basis of the back cover copy at the airport and I have to say that I was transfixed from cover to cover. Lippman''s intricately-layered, mysterious narrative is the kind of book you hate to put down, and can't wait for the next opportunity to pick up again to see what twists and turns the author has crafted. Lippman's sympathetic and adept characterization (she knows how to make you care about the people about whom she's writing), her astonishing sense of pacing and suspense-building, her true-to-life settings, and her simple ability to tell a bang-up story make this one writer I look forward to reading again and again. This was truly a bravura performance and I can only hope her other books live up to the promise of this one.

This is the first Laura Lippman book I've ever read. I normally don't stay with an author because I like a variety and prefer to jump around. I must say,I will definitely be reading Ms Lippman again. I am hooked. This books was so suspenseful and action packed, I could not put it down, a real page turner. The premise alone was extremely original, not like the same old missing persons hulla-buloo. Even though she jumped from present day to past events, it was so easy to follow. The writing is so emotionally descriptive (but not overkill) and shear genius! Read it! This is not your typical mystery. You wont be disappointed.

For fans of such detective television shows as "Cold Case" and "Without a trace" Laura Lippman's "What the Dead Know" will satisfy the beach reader set. Anyone who wants a deeply inspiring mystery should bypass this entirely. Like a good wine I was looking forward to reading this author and anticipated a twisting turning plot with a satisfying ending. What I got however was a "two buck chuck". I cared little for the characters who seemed so self-involved I wondered if they even knew they were part of the plot line. The main character has no name and no existence and we travel her path with some curiosity and empathy. I liked her, but it didn't help that the rest of this forgetful cast seemed in the way of her journey. Ms Lippman dumbs the reader down with lots of course language and sexual overtones. It make sence that Det. Infante would see the world as jaded and obsene, but everyone? I found myself skimming over their continuous chattering trying to find the string to the end of the mystery. I wanted this to be good. I just didn't need to wade through the trash to find the jewel. Which I knew was there, I just couldn't see it. Next time I'll just watch "Cold Case" and fast forward through the commercials. Try "The Thirteenth Tale" if you want a good deep mystery about sisters. It is more than a great Merlot, its sublime. Will I try Laura Lippman again? Someones going to have to convince me.

This is the first Laura Lippman novel that I've read. I don't think I would've ever picked this book up if I hadn't read a positive review from someone I trust.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The first few chapters get your head spinning. It's an uncomfortable feeling not knowing what's coming next and actually caring. This feeling began to cool towards the second half of the book. Like most authors of this genre Lippman lost a little bit of steam when it came to actually tying up the loose ends on all the plot lines she had entertained me with in the first half. The characters were great. The only one that I had trouble with was the lead detective, Kevin Infante. I didn't like him b/c he was a cookie cutter version of every detective in a novel like this. He's from out of town, plays by his own rules, and SUPRISE! he's a ladies man. (snore) Thankfully he wasn't asked to carry much of the story on his own.
There's one large twist at the end that you'll probably see from early on in the book, but that's only a fraction of "what the dead know".
If you like this one, try Harlan Coben's "Gone for Good".

Laura Lippman's WHAT THE DEAD KNOWS is suspense that keeps you glued to the end excluding a sluggish beginning. The story is told from to perspective of each character who crosses the path of Sunny Bethany. But who is Sunny and what has been her convoluted life for 30 years since she and her sister never returned from the mall?
Based on an unsolved crime the story rings with both truth and fantasy. This is not a book to take to bed if you've got an early morning call. Find a day when you can disappear into the covers of a fine, well told story and start reading. It will be a day well spent.

I'm not giving it 5 stars simply because it left me feeling a bit ... bereft? Not sure. The writing was good, the sex scenes hot and the idea is very very hot, I like the characters, etc. but I wanted MORE. I wanted to know more about the king and his "issues", I wanted to know what the fact that Suzana has this ability to control emotions mean and how that links to the prophecy of the king. What about the comment about men becoming more prevalent and finding them soon? Will there be invasions? Will Diana fight at Salin's side to protect the rhaedjour (sp?)? So while the relationship stories were great I wanted more backstory, tell me about the city, how the kids are raised, what they eat, just more meat on the bones of a great story about a particular couple. I see there is a new book and maybe these themes are explored more then. I think its a great concept but I think it would have been possible to write a book twice as long that told me more of the stuff I want to know in between the hot sex.
Fantastic
