The Summerhouse is different from all of Jude's books. Yes it has romance, time-travel, and a bit of adventure, but it's more of a "ya-ya sisterhood" type of story. Its one where you become friends with the characters and are interested in each of their lives. In this story you have three women who meet spontaneously on their birthdays(they all have the same one)at a DMV. These three women are all from different areas of the world and all have different circumstances in their lives. One woman Ellie wants to be an artist, Leslie wants to be a dancer, and Madison was destined to be a model.Later on when their all about to be middle-aged they decide to meet up again where they tell each other what their lives had become. These women are all faced with the question of "If we could go back in time and change our lives, would we change it?" Dont most people wonder this same question? Well I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but I do recommend this book. Jude Deveraux provides a great insight on life's problems and how everyone has regrets. Its what you do with your life, how you live it, and whether or not you are happy.

I wasn't crazy about all the plot elements. Not necessarily the time travel part, but how it was handled. But the characters really saved this book and made me read it in one sitting. I loved the parts that were about romance, I think those were the strongest. Wish there was more of it. I'm definitely getting the sequel.

I first purchased the 2nd book in this series to learn that it was, in fact, the 2nd book. So, before reading it I searched for and purchased the FIRST book (The Summerhouse) at Amazon. It was a great experience, not only the price and shipping were perfect, so was the book! Each character in the story is well presented and believable and the story line was such that it was difficult for me to find stopping point! I loved it and highly recommend it (as well as the sequel, "Return to the Summerhouse").
Characters are great!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Leslie, Madison, and Ellie; how each discovered who they were inside. The portrayal of the women is sensitive, caring and intelligent. It is a romance novel, but more.
"The Summerhouse" is of course about three women receiving a second chance in life from Madam Zoya. I won't give the book away, but suffice it to say that I looked forward to reading it and finding out what the women would do next.

As good as this book was, it wasn't actually necessary to the series. 'Valiant' was entertaining, but not what I expected when someone told me it was the next part in the series after 'Tithe'. While it does relate it still is sort of its own story withing the full story. Great on its own, it didn't need to sneak into the middle.

When I first started this book, I wasn't sure I would like it as much as I liked Tithe. My advice is to stick with it! It ended up being a good read. Although it doesn't seem to have connections to Tithe other than the fact that it deals with Faerie, characters from this book show up in Ironside, the actual sequel to Tithe. If you have already read Ironside, I don't think that there is information that will ruin Valiant for you, and I would still read it. I would recommend this book to teens who liked Tithe, enjoy fantasy and even those who like books that are more realistic and are looking for something a little out of their comfort zone because of the very real and 'human' conflicts that plague the main characters.

I bought this book and the two others in the series because it was in the Young Adult section and usually that means that the books are good and mostly clean (no overt sex or foul language). These books are YUCKY!!!!! I could not read them! The "F" word was used constantly. The mother had sex with her teen daughter's boyfriend. It went on and on! What good is a faery-tale if you can't get past the filth?! Don't waste money on these books. I wouldn't read them if they were free.

An amazing and unique modern day fairy tale. For anyone who loves fantasy or fairy stories, or books about strong women, i would suggest. Think "the weetzie bat books" and make it more "today" (the main girl is prone to think of video games often, etc), sexier, more raw, more dangerous, and add some serious girl toughness. think tank girl living underground in the tunnels in nyc and battling fairies (and they aren't typical tooth-fairy demure types) and being a hero. Think strange drugs and romance. this book literally took me to a world i have never heard another author describe.
I found this in the young adults section, but if you are buying for your a younger kid, i would read it first and decide. There is a lot of drug-type use and bondage sex and regular sex, lids living underground and running away, and other things that some kids might not be ready for. To put it a different way, it is very RAW. While i am all for kids reading mature books, this one gets pretty intense in a way that i think could be inappropriate. In my opinion the "mature" aspects are what makes the story really amazing, but i think this is definitely not for the younger or more immature reader. I am certainly not a prude, but i really would not want my 12 year old reading this. But i would totally buy it for her when she was a bit older!
but that is just me.

YA fantasy seems to be more popular than ever, and Holly Black's right in the middle of it.
As another reviewer mentioned, this is better than Tithe, though the world of teenagers that Black serves up is a bit raw and sensationalist. In Valiant, the magic drug use keeps it honest, and not edgy for edgy's sake. (Still a few too many unnecessarily "brutal" elements make it a bit callow.)
Definitely a fast paced book that'll hold your interest.

More than just a handbook for finding love, this book provides wisdom for finding life on a spiritual path. Each bite-sized chapter provides Buddhist-centered but universally-applicable guidance for discovering how to fully love--and live. General Buddhist concepts such as non-attachment, impermanence, acceptance, and living in the moment are gracefully woven into specific guidelines for finding and nurturing relationships. This book helps illuminate how the compass found within each of us can be our best guide for navigating the journey on our spiritual paths.

There isn't enough rating stars available for me to rate this book in my opinion. I first read this book on a recommendation from a young male co-worker. I bought my own copy and reread it at a staggered pace. I read until something hit home and then I would dwell on it's contents as it pertained to my life until I had disected it to pieces. When I came to the full realization I continued on until I was hit again. This one book has affected me more than any book I have read in my entire life. When I read it I didn't associate it with a partner but with life itself. I can't begin to use enough adjectives to describe this book. Excellent material!!!
This helped me when I first read it nearly 10 years ago.

Someone recommended this book to me nearly 10 years ago when I was at a cross-roads, in between relationships and grasping desperately for a lasting love that proved elusive given my circumstances. Pre-Amazon, it took me a long time to find a volume, finally locating one in a Boulder, CO area bookstore during a cross-country road trip.
At that time in my life, this book helped me immensely, first in accepting and finding joy in my solitude and my friendships, by no longer grasping for or chasing after immediate and elusive romantic love but instead cultivating self-acceptance and self-knowledge and a satisfaction with living in the present moment.
It was years before I met the man who would become my husband, but in those years, I was able to become the grown-up person I needed to be and was a better person for it, and when I met my husband, my relationship with him evolved naturally and undramatically toward a lasting real love.
I can't even count the times I have purchased and given away this book. I even gave a copy to a friend who was having problems with his business partnership (not even a dating situation-- but certainly good for resolving problems in that particular relationship).
It is not strictly a Buddhist book. People who are looking to read about the Buddhist philosophy or practice rather than finding dating advice should probably avoid this as they will be disappointed. Read books by Thich Nach Hahn or the Dalai Lama for a more pure Buddhist understanding.
This is really a dating/relationship book, but it borrows from the Buddhist teaching of detachment NOT by asking you to detach from those you love, but rather teaching how to detach yourself from an unhealthy habit of grasping desperately for those who are not really available to you romantically or emotionally.

The last review before this one completely missed the wisdom of this book, which I find sad. This book is quite simply the best book I've EVER read on the topic of dating and relationships. Charlotte Kasl starts with the 4 noble truths of buddhism as her premise. From there, she explains in a very in-depth manner how to apply these concepts to your life to find wholeness within yourself, see the ways that you have deceived yourself, and understand the ways that you have allowed yourself to be guided by fear instead of love.
Additionally, the book defines the 9 fundamental ways in which people bond, from most superficial to most substantial. The book has specific exercises which help you to deduce precisely what is most important to you in a partner on each of these levels, and the results may surprise you. Overall, this is one of the best 4 books I've ever read - and it is a must-read.

Riley's focused on two cases this time around, and I loved the action scenes while the hunts grew. Riley's smarts and instincts get the job done.
Excellent action scenes, lots of suspense, and more about her inner struggle with her feelings. She and Quinn have lots to work out.
Kellen had left her feeling alone, and she struggles quite a bit with that. She truly did love him, but I believe that, if a man truly loves you, he won't ask you to change. While it hurt that he left, I believe that she's better off. Quinn comes back, and while he may have learned the error of his ways, he still has a lot to learn about Riley. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks - I think that while Quinn may be stubborn, it may work out just between them. Like any woman, Riley is being cautious; she doesn't want to get hurt again, and I can understand that.
We get even more between Rhoan and Liander, and Rhoan's inner struggle where Liander's concerned. I really like the banter between Kade and Riley, even though she refuses to let it go anywhere. In true Riley form, she gives the excuse that Jack would get mad about it. We know better. She's not ready for it, but she won't admit it to anyone but herself. And I wonder if anything will come of the banter between Cole and Riley. I think he's very attacted to her and fighting it tooth and nail. It will be interesting to see if anything happens between them.
Another excellent novel and I can't wait for the next.

Sixth in Riley Jenson, Guardian, series

Review Date: 2008-06-24
Riley Jenson is an unusual character. She's part-wolf, part-vampire, working (initially against her will but perhaps not so now) as a Guardian, an enforcer for law in the supernatural world. She lives with her twin brother Rhoan and is still trying to come to terms with the fact her lover Kellen walked away from her some months before.
It probably helps to have read the previous books in this series, "Full Moon Rising", "Kissing Sin", "Tempting Evil", "Dangerous Games" and "Embraced by Darkness" as the backstory isn't always completely explained. This story sees the welcome return of Quinn, the Old Vampire who couldn't cope with Riley sharing her attentions with other men (and I don't blame him). Riley seems to be settling down, however, so that when Quinn walks back into her life there's possible some kind of a future for them.
The romance part of this book, however, is downplayed compared to the plot as Riley tries to uncover a serial killer with some strange powers. When various women get shredded by a strange animal claw, high-society men are left dead in public places and then more people start to die with a rather different footprint, it seems that Riley has her work cut out for her. Might the killer or killers strike closer to home? Are they in fact some monsters she's never previously heard of?
Riley's a great character with her forthright but loyal nature. The interactions with her boss's PA, Salliane, are fun as usual although with a rather different tone than the previous books. Her relationship with Quinn was nicely written and not overdone. This was an enjoyable episode in this series although the world of things-that-go-bump-in-the-night seems to be increasing rather rapidly and that sometimes feels, to this reader at least, rather lazy plotting. This book will appeal to those who have read the previous books and I did enjoy it, particularly the Australian rather than American/British/Irish setting.

This book just ended horribly. It is not enough that the Anita Blake books are in the toilet but come on.... This ending was a cop-out on picking A king. Its awfully convient how LH makes up new "legends" to make the most pathetic ending "plauasble"

This is not bad erotica or bad porn. While LKH is getting heat from her fans for her Anita Blake series, I find that there is no complaint for her Meredith Gentry books. I found this series to be a much better story and so far each book has proven satisfactory. However, unlike some series, and like her Anita Blake stories, read them in order. They don't stand alone because each book usually picks up where the previous one has ended. Besides, I still feel the first book was the best.

While one or two chapters were confusing due to the sudden magical happenings, over this was yet another of L. K. Hamilton's books that I just couldn't put down. Between the intense hot scenes and crying my eyes out with others I seriously enjoyed this book. Now I will truely be dying until the next Meridth Gentry book after this cliff hanger ending.

Unlike EA Solinas, I enjoy Ms. Hamilton's books, her writing and the way that the books and the plot lines evolve.
Each book generates more character insight as well as a furtherance of the challenges and successes of the heroine and her heroes - which increase on a daily/monthly basis :)
It would seem that most of the readers who were fans of the old Anita books liked the blood, gore and anger - and as a result share their anger through the reviews.
I love the Merry Gentry books because they deal with paranormal stuff that is beyond the pale. How do writers come up with this stuff?
Also, I feel that readers who choose to follow someone else's review of material without judging for themselves means that either a.) they like to follow others own thoughts; or b.) don't have the ability to think for themselves.
Have I ever read a LKH book that I didn't like? Sure - but it's my own opinion. Have I read other books from authors that I adore and collect that I didn't like? Absolutely. But again, it is my own opinion.
I enjoyed this book, just as I have enjoyed the other books. Reading for me is a way to escape into the lives of someone else - it helps me to get away from my problems and enjoy the problems, challenges, trivialities of other fictional character's for just a little while - rather than have to deal with the unhappiness, trials, tribulations and crisis in my life as well as those who have to deal with my life.
Am I an unhappy person? No. But reading for me is an escape. A review should be done with some personal aspect, but not be an attack on the author. Which I believe is happening right now. If you don't like the way things are going, then don't read the books - but please stop posting the negativity.
And stating that is my own opinion - I enjoyed this book, just as I have enjoyed all of them. The conflict within Merry's life is hazardous, there is a constant threat of death within her life from her cousin, as well as from her Aunt and Uncle. She has to be careful what she says through the mirror, and she can not be herself with very many of the guards that have been chosen to help her succeed in her goal of reproduction.
Merry's plight is fraught with disappointment because she knows who would be the better leader. She also has to face the fact that she may not be able to have a baby and the stress on her to get pregnant is what so many of us face today. Granted, we don't have all the hotties to sleep with like Merry does, but hopefully our chosen partner is hot to us - right?
Each Merry Gentry novel brings new possibilities - and each novel brings a new opportunity for us to escape for a little while into her life.
I gave this novel 4 stars - why not 5? I want more...more, more, more -
This is my review and my own opinion - You may use this review for just that - but personally, I hope that you read the book and make your own choices.

As with all of Christine Feehan's Paranormal Romances, this is excellent too. So steamy arousing. Sometimes I feel as if these books of hers are written totally from a man's mind though(please don't take offense Christine). Men would diffidently enjoy reading them just from what many men think are a woman's reaction to their sexual prowess. The women only wish it were so. Read and enjoy women.
I could do with more of the suspense or mystery. Also, the romance gets to be so detailed steamy too often in the middle of what should be action (I roll my eyes and want to skip). I do love the parts where I cannot read very well because my tears are disturbing my view.
I was only introduced to Christine Feehan's books two months ago in a discount book store by another woman browsing beside me. I have caught up to waiting for her next publications, already! I always purchase books because I read them over every two or three years. They are fresh to me then.

I adore this entire series and I have just finished Dark Guardian and I'm on to the next one. I have to say that I get a little annoyed by Jaxxon and all the women like her who are all "Sex me Sex me" but then two seconds later are like "I want my freedom ya' BIG Jerk" It frustrates me to no end.
I loved Dark Legend and Aiden's story as well. I recommend these to everyone just maybe not so much Dark Guardian.

and then there'll be the other ones you read afterwards.
Well this is just how I feel.
I picked up "Dark guardian" without knowing that it was the 8th book in a series, but as it's happened to me in the past it didn't surprise me too much:)
Anyway I have to say I was memerized by this book, I couldn't put it down, I felt it was really well written and so fascinating. So the few days it took me to read it, I really enjoyed it immensely.
Afterwards, I sought to get more books from the same series... and I've been hugely disappointed. It feels to me like it's always the same basics. Different characters, different bad guys, but same storyline all the time. I'm on my 4th book and I'm not sure I'll be reading any more after that.
Dark Prince was great because it was interesting to discover Mikhail and Gregori... but I'm currently reading Dark fire and it's just "same old, same old". Yeah, the characters are new, but the story is just the same. Beautiful girl found by equally handsome Carpathian guy, who makes her his lifemate, bla bla, bla bla.
Dark guardian stood out in the way that it was a whole new universe for me. I found the sex scenes well written too. But then again, I skipped most of them in Dark Prince, there were just too many!!!
I don't know, I'm not sure I'll read more.
My advice if you're getting started on this series: choose your first book well, as it'll probably end up being your favourite. and you don't need to read all the books in order, because you'll get all your explanations in whatever book you choose.
I thought the Anita Blake series (Laurell K Hamilton) was becoming a bit.. boring, but each book is still very different from the previous one. And sadly, it's not the case for Christine Feehan's books. A shame.

It is a good book. It follows the series well, the plot stays with the ones that come before it.
The sex scenes are too drawn out, the story line is good though. I have become accustom to skipping the 3-4 page long sex and then starting to read again.
I'll continure to buy the dark series, just because I like the stories.

I found this book to be a much better read then the other 'Dark' books I've read.
However,I felt the author should have made Jaxon more objective to her 'Carpathian' transformation, instead of calmly accepting it. After all she is supposed to have a very independent nature!
The other complaint I have about this book is the use of the word 'honey'
Come on, Lucian is 2000yrs old, with Old World manners. So, wouldn't he use terms of endearment he learnt eons ago before he lost all emotion, and since his speech tends to reflect this, instead of the modern day endearments?
Except for those 2 objections, I enjoyed the book and found I couldn't put it down, till I reached the end. The chemistry between the H/H was great, very believeable.
A star less, because of the two complaints.

Why is everyone heading to Las Vegas? The sisterhood has a mission and it seems like almost everyone is going to be heading to Las Vegas to help and be available if needed.
Lizzie Fox is at her best and with Ted's help they are going to assist the sisterhood in bringing down the impossible, or so it seems.
Maggie and Ted are in a new phase of there relationship and the judge might even say I do in Vegas.
What about our possible president Martine Connor?
Marble Rose is part of the reason for the original trip but you know Ms. Michaels would not make it that easy the book is by far her best and you wont be able to put it down.

The first tale "Treat Her Right" introduces one of three friends who is a paramedic and a widower. He has an exceptionally mature four year old who is WAAAYYY smarter than she should be - the story explores love for the previously wed. It is quite heartwarming.
"Mr. November" features a studly fireman who is used to having women fall at his feet - suddenly, the girl doesn't and he becomes interested. It was an interesting tale with twists and turns.
Lori Foster once again delivers with humor and pathos - and offers entertaining reading on the beach or on a quiet afternoon.

I especially love her books that are linked to one another. It feels like the story is extended and you get more insight into their thoughts and joys and sorrows.

Libby Mason's Mr. Right is wealthy, gorgeous, and willing to support her in the style to which she'd like to become accustomed. So when she meets Nick, who is gorgeous, but who's also a struggling unemployed writer "on the dole" (why does that sound better than "welfare" or "unemployment"?), she knows he can't be The One. But he's so fun and sexy that she can't resist spending time with him. They embark on a relationship that they keep reassuring each other isn't serious, but it turns out to be such a great relationship that Libby's starting to reassess her criteria, and despite her denial, she's starting to fall in love with him.
And then Nick breaks up with her.
Out with her girlfriend in an attempt to cheer up, she meets Ed McMann (I know I'm not the only one taken aback by his name--the PW review spelled it McMahon!), who's everything she thought she wanted. Okay, so he's not gorgeous, but he is sweet, and one of Britain's most eligible bachelors, and he's definitely willing to spend money on her.
And so maybe he gets on her nerves, and the sex is terrible, but it'll get better over time, right?
I had such a difficult time with this book at first. Libby is unabashedly materialistic--wearing designer clothes, going to the best restaurants and clubs, all in the search of her wealthy Mr. Right. And Nick wasn't much better--blame my Puritan American background, but I had a very hard time sympathizing with a young, healthy, intelligent person choosing to go on welfare rather than work.
But along the way, they grew on me. Mostly because they grew--or Libby did, at least. Nick redeemed himself in the end. Eh--the story is about Libby, growing, changing, learning--that's why it's chick lit (or women's fiction--I still prefer the chick lit label) and not romance.
I loved how Libby changed while she was with Nick, and then I loved how she tried very hard to make the relationship with Ed work. The format was great--she grew in the relationship with Nick, and those changes were evident in her relationship with Ed. And boy, could I relate to her determination to make it work, as well as to her decision that since it didn't work out with the man she loved, she was going to settle for the one who met her old criteria.
And unlike other stories with this plot, Libby did care about Ed and worried about hurting him.
I believe I have another one of Green's books in my TBR pile. I look forward to reading it.

Jane Green does not diappoint. Her novels are always fun and entertaining. I do think people "settle" and that is what the Libby was going to do until she realized that material things cannot make up for a boring life. Isn't it lucky for her that her soul mate ends up having money and a huge success to boot. OK, it is fiction. Don't we wish all stories ended this way??
