Nora Roberts closed her trilogy with a winner. This book was a bit more emotional than the other two but for good reason. The cost of battle on both fronts the one against evil and fate naturally bring rise to more powerful emotions yet they don't distract from the storyline only enhance it. If you like fantasy this trilogy is worth the time.

Not what I thought it would be.

Good story, although it wasn't what I expected. The first book in the series sat alongside the second for months after I'd purchased them. I finally got around to buying the third to complete the set and I wound up reading them all -- in one weekend. Not your typical vampire story.

I can't really add much to what has already been written, but I felt I needed to add my voice to say what a great trilogy this was to read. I may have been a bit predictable in a few places but it was predictable in the way you wished for it to turn out, I am tired of depressing books and this was uplifting and entertaining. What else could you want from your reading, if I wanted to be educated I would read a school book, this is great entertainment.

Passionate and gripping -- a keeper!

Valley of Silence is a stirring and emotional conclusion to the Circle Trilogy. There is enormous heart, struggle, and passion in this story, and characters' thoughts, feelings, and relationships are beautifully and passionately drawn. Although the story is set in a fantasy/paranormal world, it is a world so vividly and fully evoked, so well-populated and so human (both in good and evil), that the reader is fully absorbed. Nora Roberts takes as much care with her villains as with her heroes and heroines, and unique, well-developed characters whose feelings and struggles are important are the great strength of this trilogy as a whole, and of Valley of Silence in particular.

Star-crossed lovers Cian the vampire and Moira the scholar-queen share powerful emotions: passion, sacrifice, heartbreak, sorrow, and elation. Roberts has a remarkable gift -- her words go directly to the heart, and they feel true, not melodramatic. That Cian has such deep anger and defiance, and Moira such responsibilty and sorrow to bear, keeps these characters complex and compelling. Despite its fantastic world, this is one of Roberts' mostly deeply human stories. I've reread it several times, and have also listened to the audiobook, which is beautifully paced and read, sensitively and passionately, with exceptionally clear characterizations.

Follows two relatives, who end up switching places in time, one goes to the past to be thrust into a plain time period filled with rough hard men, and the other into the future to find her way into the sensitive arm's of her granddaughter's fiance..and how they each deal with their alien surroundings and time periods..

I read this book about 25 years ago and have loved it ever since.

It took me years to track down a copy (this was well before Amazon and eBay).

This haunting tale will stay with you and leave you longing for the author to write a sequel.

I contacted the author and she said she still receives many letters about this book. She wrote in her letter that the picture on the front of the book shown above is the actual Gingerbread House in Colorado. Although the story is ficton, the house actually exists.

This book is perfect for a rainy Saturday, when you curl up on the couch with a cup of hot tea.

Just a warning, don't read it before you plan on going to sleep!

No, you won't be too scared to sleep and it won't give you nightmares, but you will stay up all night, because you can't put it down!!

Oh boy, I just know I will get the wrath of most reviewers but, I do recall at least a couple who will agree with me...but, it's my opinion and that's what this is all about.

now before you get the hacking at a response to me...I don't read any, as this is my turn. Next ...the book was intriguing for the first half, then got bogged down . where's was the editor was was it the author herself ? It could have been splendid . but, now this book will find it's way to the local library .

book goes into minute detail on some pages and goes on and on leaving you with the foolish notion there's a reason ( perhaps on the next few pages ? ) but, no, just for the sake of the author's desire . Like bout the scene with the candy store , over and over and yet, when a key character dies ...poof , maybe a small paragraph . one sentence they are here then the next it's like " oh by the way " my uncle dropped dead sort of thing .

If you truly like time travel to the past type books, as I do as well and do not mind reading detail all of which really matter to the story plot . May I suggest ............

" Time And Again " by Jack Finney , " Time After Time " also by Jack Finney . These books well thought out and done with care . I own old copies of those and " All About Time " short stories by Finney .

Also the book " Bid Time Return " by which the movie " Somewhere In Time " starring Jane seymour, Chris Reeve was somewhat losely taken from ...but,it is still a good read and now re-released under title of " Somewhere In Time " same as the movie , to attract new readers .
Give them a try .
Just my opinion after all, what sort of site would this be if every book had 5 stars ? what's the point ? most of you gave 5 stars which I based buying ' The Mirror ' ... I should have read the 3 star reviews a bit closer .

Character growth, great writing

Review Date: 2008-07-31
I started reading this series about three weeks ago, and though I have interspersed the books with other reading, I keep coming back to these. Since I started, every other book I read has been Anita Blake. Should I be worried that I'm growing a little obsessive with these? Have I spent too much of my time reading this series, when I could be reading something else? Should I change this system of alternating other novels with Anita Blake books?

Nah.

One nice thing, actually, about reading this series so quickly, and without many other novels coming in between these, is that I've been able to pay close attention to the ways that the characters have grown and changed. My wife brought it to my attention, as the largest complaint against this series is the way Anita changes somewhere in the next few books; many of Hamilton's fans found the change unwelcome, and they have spent the last few years going off the deep end, becoming a sort of internet Inquisition, always on the lookout for both the faithful few and the heretics who disagree with their assessment of the series' fall from grace; anyone who continues to like the series after the change, as my wife does, are in for torture, excommunication, and burning at the stake. Considering how much I like this series so far, and how often I agree with my wife's assessment of books -- and how much I, as a writer and observer of human behavior, enjoy watching good writers deal with genuine characters -- I can pretty safely assume I'll like the coming change. I expect my own crucifixion will be coming soon -- maybe on this review. At any rate, knowledge of the controversy has made me more aware of the steady changes happening in Anita, and I love that those changes are there for me to observe.

The big changes in this book: she agrees to marry Richard, sort of -- which was a huge mistake; she said yes in the heat of the moment, when he's looking all hot and sexy, and that's always a bad time, though she rightly points out that he shouldn't have asked her then -- and then takes it back shortly afterward when she has second thoughts. I liked that because it was very real and very human; I also like that I feel a little conflicted over Anita's largest personality clash with Richard. That clash is over her absolute refusal to bend to his will, while simultaneously demanding that he bend to hers. I understand it: she has fought very hard for control of her life, and she still fights, against forces that are constantly arrayed against her: the police bureaucracy and general attitude (not shared by the RPIT cops, thankfully) that a woman and a civilian should be doubly separated from police matters; the overwhelming presence of Jean-Claude and his desire for her both as lover and servant, and her own traitorous desire for him; Bert and the demands of her job, both those that genuinely come with the territory and also those Bert unreasonably puts on her against her will. All of these things, along with the several other monsters who keep trying to control her and force her to do their bidding, have made her hypersensitive to giving in to anyone in anything; look at what happened when she allowed Jean-Claude even a moment of control over her. This means she has an incredibly difficult time in compromising with Richard, in allowing him into her life, since that means allowing him to have power over her -- and what's worse, accepting that control willingly, not begrudgingly as she does in every other instance that someone controls her. I understand that desire for independence, though I . . . can't remember where I've encountered it before.

Even though I understand her desire for independence, I can't help but think, Jesus, Anita, you don't have to bristle and argue about EVERYTHING. What the heck kind of relationship is that? Plus, she's just too dead set against the idea of monsters -- though I love that she has the honesty to admit that, even though she hates it about herself, she is indeed prejudiced. That neither Richard nor Jean-Claude are human enough for her, and it's unfair of her to think so, but she still does. It is unfair, of course; she's a little too inhuman for a normal man to put up with. I could probably handle marrying an animator, but not an animator who hung out with so many truly dangerous monsters. At least, it would be hard to handle, and so Anita has no room to criticize Richard, who at least doesn't want to be a monster and is honest about his feelings with her.

The other interesting moment with Anita was when she realized that she didn't go for her cross when Gretchen attacked her, but went straight for her gun, instead. She says she won't skip church any more, but I doubt that: her faith did not protect her in the last book, when, what was her name, Yasmeen, grabbed her; instead she ended up with another cross-shaped brand. What worked was the gun, so naturally that's what Anita would go for. Her real core belief is about survival, anyway; if she was a Christian first she wouldn't be so willing to do anything to survive. But she is willing, and so her Christianity is falling away, bit by bit -- and don't think her attraction to Richard and Jean-Claude, combined with her unwillingness to sacrifice her independence through marriage, can lead anywhere but sin. She'll get there, eventually. And I says, more power to her: the sexual revolution has come and gone, and it's a brave new world.

Otherwise: I liked Konrad and I'm ticked about how his part in the story ended up; I absolutely loathe Marcus, Raina, and Gabriel -- especially the masochist, there; that's just freaky. I liked the witch subplot, and wish more could have been done with it. I'm not sure how long Hamilton can go on whacking every single serious bad guy in these books; that's a real high turnover rate for villains. But since this book includes mentions of things like trolls and dragons, I suppose we have the near-infinite variety of all of the fantasy world to draw enemies from. All I know is, I'm going to keep reading these. A lot.

Review Date: 2007-12-15
this is one of my favorites from the series. Mostly because it deals with werewolves as the main characters this time. There's been a werewolf in the first three books, but they didn't transform into one until the third book. I think from this book you can see how far Laurell has grown as an author.

The only thing dumb about this book i would say is the cover!!! Just bogus and dumb. I'm a guy and I've gotten a lot of funny looks when i leave this thing lying around. (i've since learned to put a book on top of it or turn it over. The artwork is so irrelevant and dumb) My only beef but that's the company's fault. I don't think Laurell has a say over artwork.

Delve deep into breed life with Jacob's story

I am not going to go into detail, I see this has been done quite well.
I really enjoyed this book. Lora weaves a tail of believable characters with her breed books and Jacob is no exception. He is alpha, forgoing any formalities to protect his mate-whether she likes it or not. But Faith is not going to take this lying down, literally or figuratively. Read this book and find out what happens when alpha and stubborness collide.
This book was a great addition to Lora's breed books, it is imaginative, original, compelling and enthralling. I believe the way Lora's mixes erotica and romance is very well done, not alot of authors can do this.
I recommend this book.

Kudos Lora, keep them coming.

Can't say I loved this book, not up to this author's usual standards. Tried too hard with the emotional storyline that just fell short. The hot language that I usally enjoy left me cold as it seem out of place. I just did not enjoy this, if fact, I put in down several times. That has never happened with a Lora Leigh breed series book.

I had a little trouble getting into this one. I'm a fan of all Leigh's breed books but this one didnt seem to have to much of a plot. I felt like I was reading a porn which is ok to a point. Toward the end I found myself skipping over scenes because it was just to much.

Can't actually believe I'm writing this--usually I'm saying where is the romance--how about another love scene--but it isn't so much that there was too much sex--as there was not enough plot...

The actually plot itself could have been written in 3 or less chapters--all the rest is Jacob and Faith screwing--and I mean screwing their brains out......

I do like the epilog at the end, it really got me ready for Aidan's Charity....

This is a refreshing detour from the other Breeds stories involving an Alpha Breed male and human female. Here we have two Breeds. The sex scenes are hot and erotic. The verbal sparing keeps you entertained because no Breed female should just lay down and fall for her mate after suffering years with the 'Mating Heat." This book was so hot I read it at least 3 times within 3 days before I went searching for my next Breed fix.

Madelyne needs a hankie

Review Date: 2008-07-16
Overall, this story is very sweet and entertaining. I have read several of Garwood's other titles, and have enjoyed them immensely. There were only two things about this novel that I did not care for, and both of them concerned the heroine, Madelyne. To begin with, I understand that the heroine in this type of novel is supposed to be innocent, but Madelyne's innocence bordered on stupidity. At times, she was just a little too naive for words. Some of the things that came out of her mouth were painfully ridiculous. Secondly, Madelyne cries continuously! She's crying because she's happy... she's crying because she's sad... she's crying because she's mortified... you get the picture. Between Madelyne and later, Adela, there were enough tears to fill an ocean. Both characters show a great deal of inner strength, and just when the reader thinks they're finally going to show some outer courage, they collapse into tears again. Sometimes, the tears are over rather inconsequential things, so after a while, it's understandable if the reader starts to lose sympathy for them.

The male characters were another story altogether. Duncan, his brothers, and Gerald were very well done. The were strong, heroic, and funny. The comparison of Duncan to Odysseus got a little bit old after a while, considering the fact that Odysseus was unfaithful to his wife - more than once - so perhaps Duncan did not have as much in common with him as you might think.

In comparison to some of her other titles, Honor's Splendour is clumsy. The dialog is a little stilted, and walks a thin line between drama and melo drama, but despite the cloying heroine who was a little too prone to tears, Honor's Splendour is still an entertaining book that is certainly worth the read.

A GREAT READ

"Honor's Splendour" has it all. Romance, intrigue, mystery, humor and drama. I love the way Julie Garwood begins this story with Madelyne rescuing Duncan (and warming his feet) and him capturing her. With this unusual twist, this story heads full-tilt into a great plot. Duncan's intentions aren't very honorable in the beginning (he's seeking revenge for his sister's rape), but Madelyne's honest nature baffles him (he expected her to be like her diabolical brother and she's not) and he's forced to adjust his plan. It's great fun to watch Madelyne send Duncan's life, and those of his brothers and sister, into a tail-spin.

Although the long-anticipated first love scene comes much later than hoped for in this book, Julie Garwood does do a great job of building the sexual tension between these two characters. The sub-plots with Adela and Louddon add great depth to this captivating story, as well. It's a great read!

If you value good writing, skip this turkey

I am absolutely baffled by the five-star reviews for this book. This is only the second book I've read of Julie Garwood's and it will be my last. Her characters are cliche, inconsistent and annoying. Her writing is stiff and staccato with uninteresting and repetitive dialogue. I usually find the reviews on amazon helpful, but they let me down with this one.

YeeHa! This is a lively tale about cowboys coming out in a small Texas town. Aren't gays hung in Texas? The main characters work on a ranch. There are a lot of steamy sex scenes in this book, so many in fact it left me wondering when do the cows get milked. No one moans and groans like they do, for example: he moaned as he walked in the front door; he groaned as the sweet potato pie slid across his lips). Egad, I groan, look in a Thesaurus, will ya.

When I recently was searching at Amazon.com for a new batch of gay fiction books, "The Tin Star" kept popping up in Amazon's recommendations sections. When it comes to films, I just can't stand Westerns. So I deemed this book, set in the contemporary West on a ranch, of no interest and kept searching and adding other books to my cart. However, during this long search, Amazon was very insistent--"The Tin Star" popped up so many times that I finally decided to give it a look. One click later I saw a book rated very highly by fellow shoppers. I skimmed the very brief description and thought, what the hell, it's a contemporary book not a film set in the Old West, and it sounds interesting. There was a warning about homoerotic gay sex in the description, but that didn't faze me in the slightest. So I bought it. After a very few chapters, I suddenly realized what I was reading: a Romance Novel! I stopped dead in my tracks. How did this happen? What did I miss? I'm actually reading the homosexual version of what you find in grocery store checkout lines?! However, the characters had already grown on me, and there was an excellent and dangerous coming out storyline. And the book was not entirely what I thought a Romance Novel (as opposed to a love story, which I consider VERY different) would be. There's plenty of sex, and it's great sex (and explicit, I must add). But it has a story, and a good one at that. And it features very realistic characters--as opposed to the swashbuckling pirates with long, flowing hair, and chests bigger than garage doors that you see on supermarket Romance Novel covers. "The Tin Star" was a very enjoyable read. It's not a deep, literary work of gay fiction, but it knows what it is and does it very well. This book made me feel unashamed of having read a Romance Novel. And that was quite a task! (I just purchased "The Broken H," another Romance Novel by prolific author J.L. Langley. It's a follow-up to "The Tin Star." What can I say: J.L. hooked me in.)

Not a must read but certainly an enjoyable reading

The plot was actually quite promising. But I quickly got disappointed. The two kind of very "masculine" characters end up being two big queens almost humping each other constantly and in front of everyone. The sex scenes were also too graphical I thought. Overall ok-ish but certainly not great litterature. What I really liked though was the fight for acceptance cause this was quite realistic, especially if put back in the context of rural towns. This is what I would define a good "beach book".

This story about two gorgeous, adorable cowboys in Texas in so engaging and the characters so well-developed you can almost forget it's basically a book of porn and convince yourself you're reading popular fiction - and I mean that in the best way! Jamie grew up as the little brother of Ethan's best friend, John, who is straight. Neither Jamie or Ethan knew the other was gay and when they discover it, and Ethan kindly offers Jamie a place to stay, the sparks fly. They have wonderful chemistry and lots of steamy sex- then their relationship blooms into a sweet, but not too mushy love story. Throw in some crime, drama, and major homophobia (it takes place in small-town Texas after all) and you have the making of an actual interesting plot. It's definitely a guilty pleasure that you will want to read over and over - in between cold showers - yeah!

Normally I get bored really fast with most contemperary novels with all of their bed hopping but these characters and the plot have depth - not like the marshmellow kind with two main characters constantly ending up in bed.

The only down side is her attempt to use the fricking language and our Lord's name [not allowed] Is she trying to immulate the men who don't know how to espress themselves?

Once again we have a great cast of characters with Mel and Jack Sheridan continuing their roles and not overshadowing John "Preacher" Middleton, at 32 - I like the bond between Jack and his Marine buddies.

Paige Lassiter is 29 and has a 3 year old son, Christopher - neither one of them see a scary brute of a man in Preacher - in fact Chrishopher doesn't take too much time to bond with the man.

Mike Valenzuela is introduced more fully as he is invited to recuperate in Virgin River after being shot in the line of duty and he askes Mel for help in rehibilitation of his muscles. He still hasn't gotten it altogether.

Mel is pregnant then along comes Rick's girl friend - she is 15 and is pregnant - almost a tragedy - great scenes of maturing and growing up.
Brie, Jack's baby sister is brought in to help Paige as she is a lawyer.

We learn more about Dr. John Stone and June & Jim Hudson [from the Grass Valley trilogy] Fiesty old Doc Mullins is still around.

Now who is this mysterious Dan that keeps showing up -- undercover maybe??
Will he get his story?
He suddenly appears and helps locate Paige and her ex after Lassiter kidnapps Paige. He wants to use her as bait to draw Preacher and Jack into a trap. [grin - they whupped Lassiter].

Oh What A Story! Most Excellent, except where she needs to clean it up.
Pure entertainment etc.,
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - the whole trilogy - Great concept.

Extremely Dissapointed at a Good Book!!!!

This is my first Robyn Carr book and though I didnt like the book very much, I wont let it discourage me from her other works.

Shelter Mountain is about Paige Lassiter who walks into John "Preacher" Middleton bar on a rainy night with her 3 year old son and she is covered with bruises. As Paige tries to get comfortable with living in the small town, she is still wary that her husband will file reports about her leaving town with her husband. When her husband shows up in town to get her to come home, he beats her in the middle of the street, causing to her to lose her unborn baby which he intentionally wanted to abort. As time passes, she divorces her husband and feelings between Paige and John start to develop beautifully and surprisingly time conscious.

The story between Paige and Preacher is a very beautiful story, for this I will not lose faith in Carr's books, however, I never read the first book of this series to know everything that happened in it from the second book. There is so much talk and mention around Mel and Jack that it consumes a majority of the book. I felt like screaming shut up with these two already, they already had a book and now they are taking up another book. It was ridiculous after a while. I love sequels and I like happy endings, but this book drove me crazy. For that reason, I give it two stars.

Fantastic

I would rate this book more than 5 stars if I could. The characters of Preacher and Paige were so well written and along with all the ancillary characters, made this such an enjoyable read. This was my favorite of the series.

The second book in the Virgin River series

John "Preacher" Middleton is a former Marine who works as a cook in his buddy Jack's bar. Preacher is used to being alone--his parents died when he was young and he's never had a serious relationship. In fact, one of the reasons he enlisted was to get a band of brothers who would be like his family. Because instinctively Preacher knew that he would end up alone. So he takes comfort in his friends, in fishing and cooking in the small town of Virgin River, and in reading books and looking things up on the Internet. It's not much, but it's his life, and he's content. That is until the night a woman with a bruise on her face and a split lip walks into the bar, cradling her young son in her arms. Instantly every protective instinct in Preacher is aroused and he wants not only to find out who did this to her, but to make sure he never gets the chance to do it again.

Paige Lassiter stops into Virgin River after getting lost on her way to a safe house for battered women. She has just fled from LA with her son in tow after being viciously beaten by her husband. This isn't the first time Paige's husband has raised his hand to her and she knows it won't be the last. That's why she has to get out. For herself. For her son. And for the baby she's carrying. When she stumbles into Virgin River she has no idea the type of protective instincts these men have and that they will do anything to take care of her and make sure that she's safe. But Paige has a hard time trusting people and it will take everything Preacher can do to ensure that she's welcome in their small town, that they will look out for her no matter what, and that she can have a life as more than a man's punching bag.

Shelter Mountain is the follow-up to Virgin River (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 1), a novel about a small town that helped a broken woman put the pieces of her shattered life back together. Shelter Mountain is the same sort of story, and it's just as poignant, just as well written, and just as engaging. I'm not the type of person who cries when I read. I can watch Titanic (10th Anniversary Edition) and Love Story without tearing up. I'm just not a watering pot. But this book had me in shambles at least twice, and just hoping that there would be a happy ending. Which is the beauty of romance. Of course there was.

Preacher was introduced in Virgin River as the strong, silent type. He was the sort of guy who was always around, but who didn't have to say a lot to get his point across. He seemed like a loner, but a guy who was happy with it. And he was. Until he met Paige. It was like watching an avalanche the way this small, battered woman broke down the walls around his heart. She taught him how to feel, how to want more, how to be happy. He loved her son, protected him, taught him that all men aren't bullies and real men don't hit. I kind of fell in love with him a bit for it. Ok, who am I kidding. I fell in love a lot with him for it. And poor Paige. Jeez, it's hard for me to think of a more broken heroine. She endured the abuse and tried to make it better. And she did what she could to stop it. She had restraining orders, she'd left her husband before, and she had called the police. It didn't work. She was willing to resort to losing her identity to protect herself and her child when she found Virgin River and I was so happy that she did.

The Virgin River series has, thus far, been filled with dependable, strong men who protect their family and friends with all they've got and kind, empathetic women who just need a little support. I've loved it so far and look forward to grabbing the next book in the series, Whispering Rock (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 3).

GREAT STORY! This is definitely a sequel. Shelter Mountain reunites you with the Virgin River "family".

The Virgin River Series:

Virgin River

Shelter Mountain

Whispering Rock

A Virgin River Christmas (Nov 2008)

Robin Carr's stories unfold smoothly. Never boring or pointless. Never totally predictable. Surprises throughout. Always emotional and realistic. Before you know it, you realize that you've read half the book without stopping. You can truly get lost in these books.
As I mentioned above, this is definitely a sequel. It is the second book of the series. The first book, "Virgin River", introduces you to a lot of the characters for "Shelter Mountain". There are a couple of important characters who are newly introduced in "Shelter Mount", but the majority are already in your heart from the first book.

So... if you haven't read "Virgin River" yet, don't ruin this book by reading it first. Become a part of the Virgin River family with book 1, then come back for "Shelter Mountain".
Here is the link to the first book:
Virgin River (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 1)

For those whom have already read "Virgin River":

Quiet, shy, and with a heart bigger than his 6'6" height, John Middleton is affectionately known to his friends as "Preacher". While his marine buddies ran off to drink and use women, he stayed behind to honor the values his mom taught him as a boy. Now, in his early thirties, Preacher is happily running Jack's bar. Jack has moved into his new wife's cottage, leaving an empty apartment over the bar.

Late one night, just before Preacher closed the bar for the night, a woman came inside. Soaked from the pouring rain, and carrying her sleeping 3- year- old son, Paige is desperate to find a safe place to spend the night. Preacher immediately notices her bruised face and split lip. He offers to let her stay in the upstairs apartment for as long as she needs. As a man who tends to frighten women and children with his size, tattoos, earring, and bald head, Preacher wishes he could have a family like this woman and her child. He can't understand how her husband could have abused these blessings. Knowing he could never hope to have a woman like Paige for his own, Preacher commits himself to seeing her freed of her abusive husband. He'll give everything he has to help her make a new start, then he'll quietly let her go when she is ready to move on.

Upon first meeting John, Paige is intimidated. He's much larger than her abusive husband. If he were to get angry, he could do far worse damage. Once she realizes that he has a big soft heart, she knows she can't stay in Virgin River long. Her husband will come after her. When he finds her, anyone who helped her hide will be at risk. Somehow, John keeps convincing her to stay a few more days or weeks. Before she knows it, Paige and her son have become a part of the Virgin River family. There is not a single resident in the tiny mountain community who will not offer to help shield her.

Preacher has it bad. Not only is he head- over- heals for Paige, he has come to love her son as his own. Little Christopher is happier than he has ever been in his young life. He has a giant best buddy who spends a lot of time reading to him, playing with him, teaching him to cook, and keeping him and his mommy safe. Christopher never wants to leave John. Paige can see what a blessing John is in both their lives. How many men would take the time to make a new leg and sew it on a little boy's ragged teddy bear? She has found a miracle man in John Middleton. Now she only has to teach him how beautiful and worthy he is.

Paige's threat has come to Virgin River. Now she has no choice but to either flee or fight. With John, Jack, and all of their friends behind her, Paige is ready to stand up for herself and Christopher. For the first time in years, she sees a bright future. One that she is thrilled to spend with John. When the law can't protect her, her new family will. John has claimed Paige and Christopher as his own. He won't let his woman, or his boy, be harmed ever again. Whether it takes lawyers or guns, Preacher will keep his family safe.

Aside from all of this, you will get to read the continuing story of Jack and Mel. Their first child is born. They build their dream home. And they surround their loved ones with unending support.

Rick and Liz's story continues as well. This is one of the most emotional relationships of the series. Two teenagers are forced to become adults much too soon. Rick, being raised by Jack and Preacher for the last few years, is determined to do what is right.

Jack's youngest sister, Brie, faces some harsh twists in life. Mike, one of Jack's former marines, has faced some very hard times as well. The two become friends. Their friendship is leading up to the third book in the series:
Whispering Rock (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 3)

So many great and tragic things happen in "Shelter Mountain". Yet it all fits together into one flowing story. After reading "Shelter Mount", I'm even more attached to the characters than I was after "Virgin River". I can't wait to read Mike and Brie's story.

Here is the whole series of links in read order. There are three more Virgin River books scheduled to be released in early 2009.

Virgin River (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 1)

Shelter Mountain (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 2)

Whispering Rock (Virgin River Trilogy, Book 3)

Coming next: "A Virgin River Christmas", scheduled for Nov. 2008

I am a sucker for the breeds series but particularly if it involves a child. All my protectiveness comes out as does Wolfe's. This is a man who as tries not to make friends. He considers himself a loner little does he know that all those acts of kindness has not gone unnoticed. He will need all those friends and allies to save Elizabeth and her daughter from the experimentation of the evil genetics' council. They are the ones that think of breeds as not human but animals. It was another great read. This story is a continuation of the breed series. Everyone has a preconceived notion of the coyote breeds, they are the merciless hunters used by the genetics council. This is not the case with Kiowa. He has been asked to keep an eye on the president's daughter. He is certainly unsuspecting that this is his mate. What follows is fast paced and riveting, as he tries to keep her safe from those who would kidnap her. Yes, anything that would keep a bill from passing that makes the breeds responsible for their own future.

This book is part of the Wolf Breed series which is an offshoot of the Feline Breeds series. The Genetics Council used genetic experimentation to create humans with animal DNA, called Breeds. The Breeds were tortured, experimented upon and kept in captivity, but eventually escaped. The Council and other groups are trying to capture and/or kill them.

Dash is part wolf. He has spent twelve years in the army and Special Forces. Cassie selects his name as part of a school project to write letters to men in the services. They become pen pals. When he realizes that Cassie and her mother Elizabeth are in danger and living on the run, he takes a leave from the service to help them.

I recently read Death Angel by Linda Howard. It gave an excellent description of how Drea was on the run from bad guys. The author described many smart things that she did to survive, and many smart things that Simon did to find her. In Wolf Breeds, Elizabeth has been on the run for two years from bad guys. Dash has been searching for her for six months because he wants to help. The author doesn't tell me how the bad guys keep finding her or how Dash found her. I would have liked that, but I realize this is supposed to be more about erotic sex than a typical romantic suspense novel. However, I think it would have been easy to add a little more plot development and take away some of the "ponderings in the mind about what to do" that Elizabeth does early in the story and Dash does later in the story.

The first part of the story was better than the last part. The first part was meeting, finding, protecting, being on the run and developing a relationship. The last part was preparing and planning to get the bad guy.

There were fewer sex scenes than I expected, but they lasted several pages. There was a thread of anger or roughness to them. Since he is a Breed, Dash has a couple of physical differences from human males that occur during sex.

CAUTION SPOILER:
I was surprised and enjoyed Dash borrowing a military Hummer with night vision to travel with Elizabeth during a snow storm.

Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes six, some several pages long. Setting: current day U.S. Copyright 2004. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.

Unfortunately I did not read this series in order, but in any case, I have found every revenge more than intriguing. Fern Michaels knows how to keep you coming back over and over again.
Yoko's revenge puts the Sisterhood in danger of being caught. The girls and Charles pull out all the stops this time. Thank goodness Charles is always prepared for what could/will happen.
I highly recommend this series to everyone who enjoys books that cover romance, mystery, suspense, and where women can do anything they set their minds to. And believe me they can do it all!

Great as usual

As I completed this last installment of the series, I felt like I was saying good-bye to friends. Each of the women has now had their revenge. Never fear, Fern Michael's new series, "Revenge of the Sisterhood" is coming. Knowing that, I feel better about the ending of this one. I found myself laughing with the sisters, as well as shedding a few tears. Kathryn caught me off guard with the reason for her dislike of Spanish lessons for example. This is Yoko's revenge and her father is the devil himself.

This entire series has been fun, escapist reading. If you are looking for true crime and deep mystery, don't bother. But if you want to be entertained and have fun, by all means grab a chair at Myra's table and have a meal with the Sisterhood.
