I hold very firmly to the belief that this book cannot be fully appreciated in a first reading. It is necessary to read it at least twice, and preferably more.
It's not as immediately pleasing as some of Ms. Austen's other works, Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility etc., but those who take the time to appreciate this book will find it well worth the effort.

Any person considering reading PERSUASION by Jane Austen must have several thoughts in mind before beginning. This book is a classic, written by a master. It requires an investment of your time, your patience, your understanding and your attention. It is a book to be savored, not galloped through as if it were a modern fiction bodice ripper. If you are willing to approach this book with an open mind, expecting only to receive pleasure from the written word, you will most likely enjoy it tremendously.
I read a lot of modern romance fiction. One of the things I have noticed on researching a book through the Amazon review system before I buy it is that so often reviewers state that they were able to finish the book in two hours, three hours, four hours. Do they honestly think that is a compliment to the author? One thing I can guarantee here, you will never be able to say that about PERSUASION. Slow down, read for pleasure, read for the pure joy of observing Jane Austen's manner of combining words. Her punctuation style is totally different from modern fiction. It requires that you hold thoughts in your mind long enough for her to have completed her lengthy and complicated sentence structure.
Fans of Jane Austen often say that one specific book is their favorite. My favorite is the one I happen to be reading at the time. I've read them all multiple times and am always able to find nuggets of pleasure either not noticed before or now understood from a fresh perspective. PERSUASION is a book which shows very clearly Miss Austen's feelings on the English class system and how appearances are very often deceiving. Anne Elliot's own family is (in their minds at least) in the top strata of society. In actual fact, they are very small fish in a wide pond and do not amount to much except when within their own corner of England. Anne spends much time with the Musgrove family and all those surrounding that happy, boisterous group. Although lower in the social standings, they are loving, kind and generous, traits which are totally lacking in her own father and older sister. Anne is considered of no consequence to her family yet is loved and admired by those outside her social set who can see her value and worth. This is a story of young love lost with the opportunity to reclaim that love when maturity has given new insights into reasons, details and personalities. This book does not specifically leave you with a "happily ever after" feeling. Anne will never be mistress of Kellynch-hall, probably never even live there again. Captain Wentworth is a career naval officer with all that implies in his future service during wars. And yet, you cannot help but feel that Anne and Frederick will be quietly, calmly, gloriously happy for their remaining days. Partially because of the eight long years of separation which allowed them both to mature and grow and partially because they are just so very right for each other.
Do not begin reading this book expecting a "romance" novel as written today. If you do, you are doomed to be disappointed.

I liked the book and the series but each of them ended with me anticipating the next book. No ending was ever fully satisfied me. If you like vampire books for teens or goth books look no further. BUT be prepared to read all the books.

Let's be real here ladies, there are a number of us out there who have curly toes when it comes to fantasies about vampire men. It is that silk way they have about themselves; that velvet touch, that "euro-trash" suave that tickles our .....um, hearts. But not all of this type of literature is suitable for all women to read. Ladies under the age of 18, High School ladies, need to get their warm on too. And this is a perfect series for them, and not childish. Tell me, do you wear black and red over the kee stockings, black eyeliner, black eyeshadow, black clothing. Are you the 'odd one' in your school. This speaks to this too. She is the little goul girl, shunned by most of the people around her. This series is aimed at the unique. the little goth girls of the universe, the ones with art in their hearts, and expanded minds; and without explicit sex, just some sweet kisses, and a bit of cuddling.
There are four in this series. Try the first one. And if you hate it, you can always resell it on amazon. You might find it will have a treasured place on your shelf. :E

Vampireville continues the tale of goth-girl Raven, the wannabe vampire. In this story a new threat has come to Dullsville. Jagger, Alexander's archrival and his sister Luna, who has her sights on turning Trevor, Raven's long time nemesis, into a vampire.
Together, Raven and Alexander must begin a terrifying search for Jagger and Luna's hideout to drive them away or else Dullsville will quickly become Vampireville.
This is a fast paced read that I feel will appeal to the tween crowd. Parents will also like this clean vampire tale.
I'd recommend Twilight by Stephanie Myers for those who like a more serious teen vampire tale.

Kudos again to Sarah. One of the very few writers that has received multiple 5 star ratings from me on her books.
This story line was great with a hot alpha male cowboy, a spunky female lead, full of passion, love, and HOT HOT HOT sex. This book is a keeper and I recommend everyone get this book. Once you read this you will want to read some more of her books.
Keep them coming Sarah

This was my first book by Sarah McCarty and it was very enjoyable and sweet. My only problem with it was that everthing is so drawn out. The conversations are inane and go on forever and the plot is slow and tedious. The upside for most of you buying this type of book is that the love scenes are similarly drawn out and go on forever. All in all, I like the characters and thought their interactions were very sweet, which was a refreshing change.

I picked up this book based on rave reviews and countless recommendations. I can't say I was disappointed, but I will say Promises Linger isn't "the best book out there", as I was told so many times. Asa and Elizabeth are great, complex characters, but they might have been a little too complex for my taste. I was a little upset that we didn't have more background on either character, especially Asa. He is supposedly a feared gunslinger, but we don't learn about any of his gun-for-hire work. He is so peaceful and in charge, and he falls so easily into the ranching role that the gunslinger background feels very unsupported.
Also, I felt that the crude sex scenes and foul language really took away from the sweet love story. Granted, it is "erotic romance", but the erotica conflicted with the romance so badly that it felt like I was reading bits and pieces of two different novels--a sweet old-fashioned love story and a cheap porno. Even now as I type my review, I can't shake the feeling that I really did read two separate books. It was just too choppy and artificial for me to feel that the two aspects merged together effectively. I can't really explain exactly how this book differs from other (better) erotica, but in Promises Linger the rough language and crude sexual terms cheapen the story and detract from the tenderness between Asa and Elizabeth. It just doesn't feel natural. I understand the crudeness from Asa's point of view, but it's very odd coming from Elizabeth, who's supposedly such an innocent and gentle lady.
All in all--despite my pickiness--it is a great story. Just read it for entertainment and I'm sure you'll love it.

Kudos to the reviewer who mentioned that this author mostly "tells" rather than "shows". But rather than having to read the whole book you can sum it up thusly: werewolves like to run. A lot. I mean a whole lot. They like to eat a lot. And sloppily. And drink water. They like to howl. (So far this sounds like my dog.) There is only one female werewolf so while she and her mate (who everyone can see from the beginning she is passionate about and is really quite bored with the milqtoast human she has cursory involvement with.) have sex, I'm not sure what the others do...except maybe fight over her. So, there you have it.
Good but it made me sad

(to other aspiring writers)Do you ever have a moment your life when you have an idea and you think "wow I'm so original for thinking this! My book will be amazing!" Then you read something by someone else who had the exact same idea but what published before you? Yea. That's how Bitten was for me. I enjoyed the read but it kept me up at night wondering how to change my own novel. Her unique element is that the werewolves actually turn into wolves instead of some kind of demented human/wolf creature from Ginger Snaps.
I Love it!

This was an OK read. I just don't understand writers who want to have a strong female protagonist but make her a girl instead of a woman. She wants to be treated just like the guys and even plays the "mine's bigger than yours" games. Then she acts like a spoiled teeny-bopper when someone says or does something she doesn't like - and never seems to "get it".
The male characters are much more believable and likable - hence the three stars. I'll try one more in the series to see if things improve.

What a delightful Sunday afternoon reading!
I really like Georgia Beers' books, with the exception of Thy Neighbor's Wife, and this one delivered as well.
I think her strength is coming up with realistic scenarios and filling them with believable characters. I enjoy that so much in contrast to far fetched plots and super-human women that sometimes inhabit lesfic. Her writing is solid, dialogs well written with a feeling of authenticity, for lack of a better word, to them.
All of that is true for this book as well. I was a bit 'scared' when I read that a dog had such a bit part in the book, but that as well is really well written.

After Too Close to Touch and Fresh Tracks, both good romances, I was looking forward to more of the same from Ms. Beers. Her romance, Mine, didn't capture the feeling and Finding Home seems to have missed the mark by an even wider margin. Still. I love dogs, so the canine hero of this book, Bentley, compensated a bit for what was a tepid romance with characters that felt like they were just going through the motions.
One of the things I've always liked about Ms. Beers' romances is that they're light and entertaining without being shallow. This is a sign of a good author. Her characters have had depth and it's been easy to identify with them. This time, it's as if the author thought that if she threw Sarah and Natalie together in a quirky twist of fate and they agonized for awhile and then decided they were in love, that was enough. It wasn't for this reader.
I suppose, like a lot of women, I bought this book because I've had good experiences in the past and I thought Mine was an aberration not the start of a downward trend. Also, Finding Home has a very appealing plot. Unfortunately, it never gets off the ground the way that it could. This book is not in the same class as several other Bold Strokes romances I've reviewed recently. Maybe that's just a matter of personal taste or maybe it didn't help that I read this book in between others that were far better in every department. But I usually like Ms. Beers' novels, so I was surprised not to enjoy this one.
It's not easy to keep writing good romances, I'm sure. I can only think of about three authors who have written more than ten romances that are all excellent. I wish Ms. Beers better luck next time.

I've been a fan of Georgia Beers' writing ever since I read "Turning the Page" (1st ed.) many years ago. In these (happy)days when new lesbian novels keep raining and pouring over us, it's good to have writers who remain true to their style of story telling.
"Finding Home" is a love story, yes, but I think the main character is this adorable Mini Aussie Shepherd Bentley who sees and feels everything, and leads his two "mistresses" in the right direction.
The main characters are very real, very human and very lovable, with all their stubborness and insecurities. I want Mrs Valenti for my mother and was very irritated with Andrea most of the time!
Georgia Beers writing is, as usual, fluent, funny, and often very deep. I appreciate the fact that she doesn't feel obliged to introduce terribly big dramatic happenings in her story. It evolves naturally, almost softly, and with Bentley's help into the happy ending we know will be there.
It's like eating wonderful chocolate, with quite a few hard nuts in it!

When I sit down to read a novel I expect to find angst, good characters, a story that moves forward with every page, and sex. For those of you who also look for these things, this book doesn't meet the requirements. It's a nice story and the characters are well developed, but, for me, the other things were lacking. (Ok, there was one sex scene, but it came at the very end of the book). From reading her other novels (Turning the Page and Thy Neighbor's Wife), I expected more than I got from this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It provided keen insight into the dating/mating process. The chapters are divided into relevant topics and the author has a unique writing style that draws the reader into the content. Very helpful and fun.
A good read, but not a dummy's guide.

I purchased this book and the online instant view. The instant view wasnt worth the $2.00 because you cant print or save.
The book is good, though i havent read much of it.
I have one complaint. The book isnt an easy read. Usually you must read 4 or 5 pages to understand the authors point or seduction tip. I really would have prefered a short, to the point, version of this book. She gives 100 or 200 seduction tips, but then she talks on and on about stories or the details on why it may work etc. Some of her conclusions are speculative.

This book was amazing! A guy friend of mine had given me some tips from it years ago and recommended I should read it. I finally got around to buying it a couple of months ago and finally sat down to read it. It offered great tips about communication and gender differences. I often found myself reading the sections geared towards men and thinking "Yes! That's exactly how I would like a guy to act!" So I have faith that the sections that are geared towards women are accurate in their suggestions. In fact, I have toyed around with some of the ideas she gives and they honestly worked. I'm sure it isn't the ONLY reason that the guy fell for me, but it certainly helped! I 100% recommend this book for girls AND guys. Even for those of you who are skeptical or not looking for love, it still brings to the table some really interesting sociologial studies and impressive facts! Happy Reading!!

This book focuses on what to do / say when you're around members of the opposite sex in the hope that they will fall in love with you.
The book offers insightful information and key points to helping encourage and foster a relationship with someone. Many of the things suggested actually work (from personal experience) and do help you get closer to the people you care about. Some of the techniques include finding commonalities and really listening to the person. Using the techniques offered could, I would argue, help you improve your relationship with others (family members, relatives, etc) in your life not just your love interest.
Honestly, though, the only thing I found misleading is the title. You can't MAKE people fall in love with you. This book will definitely help you hold and encourage interest, but if the person's not into you, then there's not a lot you can do to change their mind (see "He's Just Not That Into You").
Overall, the book is well worth the money and really does offer great perspective and insight. You won't be disappointed.

Ok, so I had great hopes for this book, but was worried because the title promised a lot. Actually, its a great book just to make you a better person. It teaches you how to be a better person, to improve your people skills and draw people to you. I can see how it can help you be a better and more likeable person and draw people to you and like you, then some may fall in love with you. I wish the title were different because it sorts of limits the audience with its name.

While this book was suspenseful and gave you lots of people to choose from as the murderer, it went on way too long and therefore took me a long time to get through. I think the author could've chopped a ton of pages and had a much tighter book that wouldn't have felt like it was dragging in places (especially the beginning).
I also found it hard to get behind Caitlyn and especially her romance with Adam, which seemed forced and contrived. The epilogue just confirmed that.
Lisa Jackson a good writer, so I hope the sequel is better.

I've read several of the reviews here, ranging from 5 stars as in this is one of the best books ever written to 1 star as if this is the worst book ever to escape an editor's desk. Well, this one is surely somewhere in between. Yes, I did figure out early on what was wrong with Caitlin and one major mystery is why the cops and the psycholgist couldn't figure it out. Why couldn't Nikki Gillette figure it out? She's supposed to be a reporter. Does she not do any research? Gosh, the answer was there for everyone to read. Of course, Adam Hunt did read it and still couldn't figure it out.. What a bonehead. The killer? Well, I will confess that I did not guess who the killer was, but I felt bad for not guessing, because the clues were there and something about the situation with the eventual killer just seemed wrong and I should have known. I've read where other reviewers found no likeable characters in this book. True. I tried to root for Caitlin, but she just became more and more unlikeable as the book went on. And the romance between Adam and Caitlin. That was contrived at the best. Silly and stupid at the worst. 'The Night Before' was able to keep me interested I guess, despite annoying characters like Caitlin, Sugar and Morrissette, some pretty incompetent police work by Reed, a clueless psychologist in Adam Hunt and an ending that was all soapy and made me wish I skipped the Epilogue. The climatic struggle between Caitlin, Hannah and Atropos was weak. A better ending would have had all three of them found in a pile, covered in their blood, mixed together as one when the police finally arrived to find them, a group at peace at last. Hey, I like that. Maybe I should write an alternate ending and re-edit this book. The bottom line is, this novel gets 3 stars as not very good but not as bad as many in this genre. Not up to Lisa Jackson's standards. Anyway, read the 'Morning After'. It's much better.

This book was about the extremely dysfunctional Montgomery family. It appeared that they are very unlucky and then became apparent that someone was eliminating them. Though I was able to guess some of the Montgomery secrets, I did not guess the identity of the killer. I am an avid mystery reader and this character never entered my mind. I think some of the book could have been condensed and it would have made it a 5 star mystery.

Many of Lisa Jackson's novels are repetitive and contain the same wording and elements, so rather than talk about them, I came up with a drinking game!
*******************************
A Drinking Game for Lisa Jackson Novels
Supplies: Any Lisa Jackson novel, your favorite beverage.
As you read the novel, take a drink every time:
-any character lights up/takes a drag off a cigarette
-a man calls a woman "darlin'"
-anyone "leans a hip" against something - counter, table, etc.
-someone gets into or out of a "rig"
-anyone uses "Hell!" or "Oh Hell!" as an exclamation - chug your whole drink if it was said immediately before a kiss
-a man "growls" something at woman - chug your whole drink if it was said immediately before a kiss
-someone touches another person's "crown" - chug your whole drink if it was said during sex
-the main character has a detailed dream
-any Catholic element is mentioned
-you find any grammar or spelling errors
-any portion of the story is repeated
Happy Reading!

This is my first Georgette Heyer novel. I had a hard time getting into it. The first quarter of the book is rather slow and dull. However, once into the story, I found it very quirky and fun. I did not find it to be a romance though. Freddy and Kitty don't have much spark. And although I realize that this was not the intent of the author, I kept waiting for Freddy to come out of the closet. At the very least he is a metrosexual. I like my heroes a little less interested in female clothing and style.
But if I look past the idea of this book as a romance, I enjoyed it. The banter is great. The characters are hilarious. I would definitely recommend it.

If you loved Friday's Child (my very favorite Heyer book) you'll love Cotillion.
Most Heyer books feature heros who need to grow. In Cotillion, a classic comedy of manners, our innocent heroine (madly in love with a romantic, dashing figure as the book begins) learns to appreciate the real worth of a very average man.
Sweet, gentle humor-- a book that gets better with every read.

Kitty Charing's guardian, the crotchety Mathew Penicuik, has promised that she shall inherit his fortune if she agrees to marry one of his great nephews.
Kitty, however, wants none of them. What she does want is a trip to London, a place that she's never been.
So she arranges a hoax engagement with great nephew Freddy giving her a good excuse to go to town to meet his family.
Once in London she becomes a woman of fashion and gets entangled in all sorts of scrapes and misadventures.
Overall, Cotillion is pleasant historical fiction that while rather loosely plotted is carried along by the strength of a charming cast of characters. These include: the half witted but affectionate Lord Dolphington, foppish Freddy who has immaculate taste on everything from waistcoats to drapes, and the darkly handsome Jack, a notorious gambler and ladies' man.
The story starts with Kitty dealing with multiple marriage proposals and matters of the heart. However, during the entire middle section of the novel her romantic future is put on hold as she plays cupid for others. I felt as though this took too much focus away from Kitty as a heroine. She pales a bit in comparison to the far more interesting couples and situations around her. I got the impression of her as a kind hearted ingénue, but not much more than that.
Also I felt that Kitty and Jack's past and present relationship was rather poorly defined. We are made to understand that they had some kind of involvement in the past, but the exact nature of it eludes us. Was it a simple school girl crush as Kitty insists? Or was it something deeper than that as Jack seems to believe? This is a problem when Heyer attempts a love-triangle conflict at the stories' climax. Because we do not know whether Kitty really feels anything for Jack at all, there is a definite lack of tension, romantic or otherwise.
In the end, Cotillion is more of a feel good story than anything else. Suspense is minimal, and the novel's true strength lies in the journey and not the destination.
On a side note, there is a lot of unusual and (I suppose) period appropriate vernacular. For example,
"Wonder if he's playing a deep game?.. No saying what might be in his head, a curst rum touch Jack! Shouldn't have thought he'd whistle a fortune down the wind though. Rather fancy he counted the old gentleman's rolls of soft his own. Never knew such a fellow for wasting the ready! Played wily beguiled with his own fortune!" Pg 48-49.
Recommended if you love regency stories or light-hearted cozy reads.

Everyone loves an alpha hero, whether he's a Duke or a Navy SEAL. Everyone loves competence, good looks, and a quick wit. In "Cotillion", you will find yourself rooting for the very antithesis of those heroes. Freddy is a total Beta. He isn't very quick on the uptake, hasn't any particular wit, and, although he dresses in the height of Regency fashion, his appearance is one of amiable vacuity...or a startled rabbit, when circumstances get out of hand, as they so frequently do. What Freddy does have, in abundance, is warmth, kindness, generosity, and a willingness to go out of his comfort zone to extricate his pretend-fiance, Kitty, from the predicaments her impulsivity launches her into.
Freddy grows on you as the book progresses. From being Kitty's dupe to becoming her savior, you will savor the charms of Mr. Nice Guy, Regency-era version. There are delightful subplots, with a host of well-rounded characters: Lord Dolphinton, the lackwitted cousin who is terrified of his mother and in love with a bourgeoise woman; the Chevalier, Kitty's French cousin who falls for a lovely damsel being groomed for a life as a courtesan; and Freddy's father, who is actually one of the alpha males we would normally expect.
I believe there are superior books by Heyer: Frederica, The Grand Sophy, and Venetia, to name a few. But you shouldn't miss Cotillion, because it is such a triumph for Nice Guys everywhere, as well as being incredibly funny.

I first discovered Georgette Heyer when I was a teenager. I read her book Friday's Child and was completely hooked. Cotillion is one of my favorites. The interweaving of the romances of four different couples is delightful. By the end of the book, you feel as if you have spent time with friends.
I cannot recommend Heyer's books too highly. She, in my opinion, created the Regency romance genre (Ms. Austen's books were the contemporary novels of her period.) Heyer created a fictional, glittery, aristocratic world which which is still being utilized by historical romance and regency novelists today. It is interesting to note that she is being republished under historical romances - a genre that relies heavily on sexual escapades. Heyer's books are romantic but not sexual. She is able to build a tension which culminates with a kiss rather than a bed romp.
These are books you can enjoy and still pass to your younger daughters, sisters, etc. without worrying that the subject matter is too mature.
I can only wish that Ms. Heyer wrote twice the number of books she did. I own each in hardcover and am purchasing my set of "reader" copies as Sourcebooks republishes her works.

My wife bought this as a surprise for our romantic weekend away. Most of the games are not very exciting and they don't tell you ahead of time that you'll need a lot of props. So we couldn't even try half the games on our weekend. The other games are mostly roll playing and questions. This is great if your a young couple who are still getting to know each other in the early stages of a relationsship and what to have some fun. If you've been married for a few years there is not much here unless your totally sexually repressed.

This is my first Sophie Jordan novel, and I can definitely say that I will be trying another soon. Although the plot was entirely unoriginal and uninspired, the story was touching and rather sweet. The characters managed to stay 'in character' the entire way through, and although that was at times frustrating, I admire an author who can keep her characters straight from the start of a novel to the very last page. Kudos!

I liked the story weel enough and was really interested in all the characters, but the end of the story seemed very rushed to me. One second Seth is refusing to love Jane (something he was moderately good at throughout the story) and the next he is telling her he always loved her. ??? Also, nothing bad happens to the bad guys, they get away with treating her like a servant and stealing her money.
Hurumph. On the bright side, this is a veru fast read. I tried to read Nicole Jordan's latest yesterday and couldn't get past page 25 since it was so boring. At least this story was a page-turner.

I will not rehash the entire plot as it has already been done. What I will say is that the book was well written and interesting all the way up to the last few chapters; at which point it became rushed. It almosted seemed like the authour was running out of pages and just needed to wrap it up. With maybe just 15 or 20 more pages the book could have been so much more developed.

Lady Jane Guthrie remain in a heartless marriage for six-years
to an unfaithful husband. After her husband's death, her
brother-in-law and his family moved in, took over her home,
and treated her like a servant. Even though, her husband had
been dead more than a year. Jane's brother-in-law refused to
allow her to come out of mourning, keeping her a prisoner in
her own home. Jane became bored with her life. She felt a void
and wanted a night out. The Duchness of Shillington and the
Duchess of Derring, her two best friends, attended a Bordello
Masquerade Ball given by Madame Fleur. Her friends dressed
Jane in a flirtatious evening grown and she was hidden behind
a mask.
Also, attending the ball, was her brother-in-law, whom she
recognized at once. Trying to flee, she ran into another
room and another man, Seth Rutledge Lord St. Claire, who was
waiting for Madame Fleur. Seth was not wearing a mask.
She recognized him immediately, although, she had not seen him
in many years. Seth's father purchased his commission, hoping
he would never return home. His brother died, however,
leaving Seth the responsibility for the family. Jane had loved
Seth when they grew up together in the country and she
had not forgotten him. Seth did not know it was Jane behind
the mask. He had taken her for a doxy, yet she was stirring
feelings inside of him that were strange to him.
Seth was instantaneously attracted to Jane and kissed her.
He found himself unable to stop when the door opened and
Madame Fleur entered. Jane was able to flee the room, join her
two friends, and eventually leave the ball.
The next day, Seth and his sister Julianne ran into Jane in the
park, their longtime childhood friend. Julianne was permanently
blinded from a childhood accident their father blamed on
Seth. He carried that burden of guilt heavily. Julianne secretly
in love with one of the servants.
Jane sneaks out again to another Bordello Masquerade Ball
looking for Seth. Seth likewise, attended the Ball hoping to
find the mystery women he was hopelessly attracted to.
Jane and Seth had several sexual encounters before Jane finally
had to confront Seth she was his mysterious lover.
Sophie Jordan portrayed Jane as a sweet and likeable
character who deserved to find love after a loveless
first marriage and being preyed upon by her former-in-laws.
There were times when Seth came across as too rough with
Jane and unworthy of her love. Jane did not reveal her
feelings to Seth until toward the end of the book. Personally,
I would have preferred at an earlier point in the story.
All in all, this book had a happy ending for two people who
finally found the love and happiness they sought. I highly
recommend "One Night With You"
to an unfaithful husband.

Anne is mostly ignored by her family, and they don't know that she once had a brief attachment to a young naval officer, Frederick Wentworth. A family friend, Anne's surrogate mother figure, thought Anne would be able to find someone better, and advised her to break off her commitment. Anne took the advice, which resulted in devastation both for herself and for the young man.
Now, seven years later, Wentworth's sister and her husband are renting Anne's family home. When the now-Captain Wentworth visits, he and Anne find themselves thrown into the same social circle, and spend many months trying to decide if they still have the same feelings for each other that they did so long ago.
I liked this story, with its insight into the amount of effort it took for Victorians to make proper matches and ensure their way of life would continue. I liked the social rankings and the elaborate rules of behavior, which must have been absolutely stifling for someone living through this time.
However, I didn't identify at all with Anne as a protagonist. I understand that rules of etiquette were different in those days, and it is difficult for me to read this book without looking through a modern-day filter. However, Anne had no sense of self-value, and only seemed to see herself as important when she was being "useful" to others. It is true that her family treated her as a tool, but I couldn't see how she could see herself that way and still have been attractive to the men who vie for her attention.
