A kids book that doubles as a treasure chest

Secret pouches, treasure gems, letters, pirate flags...lots of fun!

We bought this for our young children (5-year old and 4-year old) as they were excited by the Pirates of the Caribbean movie trilogy.

We bought this book along with "Pirates" by John Matthews last year. We take the books off the shelf every couple months and read through them for bedtime. The books will stay in our collection for years to come.

This book helps introduce a large amount of new vocabulary but, more importantly, covers so much ground that it acts as a fantastic springboard to further study history or science.

it's a great book, filled with all kinds of pirate facts, legends, stories, and "artifacts" . My godson got a real kick out of it. He loves pirates and the book is written as if first-hand by a privateer (a pirate commissioned by the government to hunt down enemy state vessels, and rogue pirate ships).

This book will definitely be one he enjoys for many years. Some of the subject matter is just within his attention level and understanding, but the more intricate details and artifacts will prove fun discoveries as he gets older and has the patience to read over each part carefully. i'm a big fan of the whole series.

My 7-year-old son could not wait to sit down and start looking through this. The day it arrived we had some younger children visiting, and he "wowed" them all by showing them different parts of the book. He is very excited about it, and I am a happy mother for finding another great book for a young reader.

Great book that is a good overview of the movie for children. They include a few weird words, such as 'holodetector' and may be difficult for young children to read as well as hard to describe what the word is (the best thing to say is 'computer').

How can you go wrong with a Little Golden Book? They've been around for years, and continue to bring joy to children. This book (Walle) has good pictures, and is interesting for our son to read to US. Recommended.

I initially bought this book for my son after seeing WALL-E in the theater. I didn't expect much but he really was into the film so I figured it might be good for a couple reads.

Turns out this is a really phenomenal book with some great art work. The story pretty much mirrors the film from start to finish so it was really easy for him to follow (he's only 2). But the art style is what I enjoy the most. It appears to be concept art that was compiled simply for the book and it has a really warm and loving feel to it.

Highly Recommended!

Got it because my kids liked the idea of WallE, who they call Fred. They didn't see the movie, just trailers and online at disney.com.
Tells the story simply and my daughter,6, can read it to the other ones.

The Little Golden Binding is Falling Off

Review Date: 2008-08-03
The last few little golden books that I purchased from Amazon have had the golden binding sticker falling off the book when they were delivered. This one immediately fell off on taking it out of the box and I had to glue it back on. Oddly enough, I have had this problem with the Golden Books made in the US, and not with the Golden Books made in China. The quality control at the US plants and Amazon must be very poor for this to be the case.

The book itself is okay. Just the basic outline of the Wall-E story. It is made in the same style as the Pixar 'Cars' Little Golden Book.

This book was required reading for my granddaughter when she went into the 3rd grade. Once she began reading, she couldn't put it down till she finished it. I can remember when I used to have some of the authors books written for adults and how much I enjoyed them especially one she wrote many years ago about turning 40.
My granddaughter said to give this one a "thumbs up"

I think that Mrs. Kelly is nice. In the beginning I did not like her. The story was very interesting. Andrew was funny. Sharon was mean. Nickywas mysterious. I thought that Nicky liked his freckles, but he did not like them. My favorite part was when he drank the feckle juice.

I really had a good time reading this series this summer, and I definitely will recommend it to my female students. I thought the twist with Phoenix a fun idea in the book, too. I enjoy Raven's wit (Phoenix: My name is Phoenix Slater. And you are? Raven: Leaving.). However, I really wanted this book to have more length, and I would have like to have seen more interaction between Phoenix and Raven.

Still, as all the other books in the series, it was a blast. I can't wait for the next one.

I was waiting for this book for so long and it most definitly did not disappoint! It is by far my favorite series. Short and sweet. In this one, Alexander didnt have too big of a part, but yet i was NEVER bored. It felt like i was experiencign the coffin club along with Raven (i wish! lol). Ellen made up the perfect characters and an amazing club which i would love so much if it actually existed!

A Must Read.

Best book of the series

Just a warning: this review begins somewhat harsh, but becomes nicer. I promise. The Vampire Kisses series happens to be a series that I have kept reading mostly because I keep receiving review copies. Otherwise, I would have stopped after the first novel. The impressions of the first novel stayed with me for quite awhile, and I believe for valid reasons.

My two main issues were Raven as a goth and Raven's relationship with Alexander. As both of those are central to the books, it did cause quite a problem.

Let's start with the goth problem. For those who are wondering, I am not gothic. I am a punk, but do not think that makes me unqualified. I am fascinated by subcultures, which helped me greatly on an AP essay in my junior year (Basically, `The 1950s were a time of great conformity. Is this true or was counterculture already forming?'). Raven really rubbed me the wrong way because of how she viewed herself as a complete outsider in Dullsville because they could not accept her black-clad self. I always felt the town she lived in would be a lot more inviting if she stopped viewing it in her head as "Dullsville." I also felt like she constantly put her clothes forth as an excuse for being an outsider in Dullsville (and an insider in Hipsterville). Besides being highly unlikely (hello, goth is *gag* trendy), this completely misses the point of being a goth. It's about love. Love of the music, love of the clothes, love, love, love (well, hate of the culture against which it is reacting). Finally, in this book, I felt like Raven actually did find meaning in her clothes other than identification of her status as an outsider, due to this conversation with her hippie aunt:

'"I can't imagine you any other way. The way you dress is who you are. It's more than beads and bangles. You aren't doing it to be like someone else, or fit in."

. . .

". . . I don't wear tattoos to freak her out; I wear them because I have to. It's me."

Aunt Libby paused.

"My mother never understood my inner style, either," she confessed. "That's what it is, really," she said wisely. "It's not about designers or labels but self-expression. And attitude."'

Next, let's move to the problem of her relationship with Alexander. I find her approach to the relationship creepy. Replace "goth" and "vampire" with "golddigger" and "trust-fund baby" and you might see what I mean. Often I feel Raven only became attracted to Alexander because he's a vampire and he dresses in black too. Not a foundation for a lasting relationship. Of course, a lasting relationship is what she's running into headlong. THE COFFIN CLUB forces Raven to consider aspects of becoming a vampire she never bothered to slow down and think about before. Including, sadly, the fact she would have to drink blood. As she says about herself, "I thought I was being investigative and mature when perhaps I was only being reckless." She needs to take that lesson and apply it to her entire life. Raven doesn't yet possess the maturity to tie herself to one person for eternity. She needs to realize that.

As for the rest of the novel, THE COFFIN CLUB is an extremely quick (192 pages) but entertaining read. There's family bonding, some cute romantic moments, and tension between the two factions seeking control of the club. Girly-girl vamps Scarlet and Onyx are now my favorite part of the series. They're idealistic, loyal, and I hope they show up again to steal the show in future installments.

I had to add my two cents here. I see all of these reviews from kids or people who bought the book for a kid. I am 25 and am collecting the entire series. These books are beautifully done, informational and just plain fun to read and look through. Anyone with interest in mythology, literature and history would adore this series. It is attention getting for the young, but it is also academic enough for the adults. They are not patronizing or low leveled that would steer adult readers away. The tongue-in-cheek approach of the advertising inside can relegate the book to the younger crowd, but adults-you too can LOVE this book!

I have always loved dragons and this book provides information on the different types, their habitats, and lots more. I loved the little extras like the dragon scales and the packets of dragon dust and even my four year old loved to look at the beautiful illustrations. This book is perfect for anyone who is fascinated by these mythical creatures.

I purchased this book as a gift. The recipient was 7.
Most of the book is still a little much for her yet, but she was beyond excited just the same. There was some that she thinks is interesting now, but as she gets older, there will be so much more for explore in the book. After going through the entire book, you have to remind yourself that dragons truly aren't real!

Winter of the Ice Wizard is a great Magic Tree House book. It begins when Jack and Annie get a note from Merlin. They end up with Teddy and Kathleen at the castle of the Ice Wizard. There, they learn that he wrote the note and had kidnapped Merlin and Morgan. In order to save them, they have to find the Ice Wizard's eye. They recieve directions to go to the Hollow Hill, and they do, in the ice Wizard's sleigh. They find the eye and give it to the Wizard. He is sad and mad because they eye doesn't work. Then Teddy and Kathleen bring in the swan maiden, the Wizard's sister, and she tells him that she will forgive him. Then his eye works. They are given back Merlin and Morgan, and the mission is over.

I think that this is a great book. Winter of the Ice Wizard is my favorite Magic Tree House book!

I have to say this is the finest series I have ever read. For an intelligent, medevil soap opera it doesnt get any better. However...I am so beyond frustrated with the author. If he spent half the time he did writing in his "not a blog" or helping other authors, or whatever convention that month and focused on the novel maybe he wouldnt have so many fans irritated right now. At the end of this novel he states that Dance with dragons is almost done and blah blah blah. Well here we are 2+ years later and not even a release date to look forward to. Is he so arrogant that he thinks he fans wont desert him? Is he really not that devoted to his fans to give a crap about them? Why create an epic series to end all series and never finish it? At this rate the last book will be out in 2019. And unless he plans to live to be 90 and still writing it will never be done. I only hope that HBO wises up and options his other properties with a stipulation that he finishes the series. We could have 7 or 8 of the greatest movies, mini-series, or tv shows ever created if only someone could finish a novel. Yes I am venting and frustrated. I read the entire series every year as some sick ritual to hope that the next novel will come out. If your George RR Martin's editor, publicist, or publishing company reading this. Shame on you! Make your authors do some work. As for GRRM....I am sure you are a nice guy. But can you please finish the series before you too old to, or at least put it in the hands of a more capable author with some motivation, for the sake of your fans and your legacy.

Are you people serious? If you want a simple, uncomplicated story, stick with Hary Potter. This series is not for light readers.
GRRM has created a monster that almost escapes his control. His world is so vast and full of amazing characters that all other modern fantasy novels seem weak.
Oh! Too many characters! Oh my, where are all the main ones??!1?!
STFU and enjoy this for what it is, a monster novel that never stops evolving.
I for one, can not wait for A Dance with Dragons. I can't wait to see what happens to the rest of the cast.

I read a few of the more negative reviews that were complaining about the lack of focus on the main characters. I loved this book as much as any of the others, because it focused on some new and exciting characters.

to each his own I guess.

In any event... GO BUY THIS WHOLE SERIES FOR THE LUV OF GAWD. It is awesome. I can't imagine any true fantasy nerd not reading this most holy of fantasy series.

Does GRRM care how angry readers are getting?

A Feast for Crows was a huge disappointment to almost everyone. GRRM new it was a pretty poor effort and he offered some weak explanations in his web site - the entire work was too long for one volume, Dances with Dragons was coming soon, he had writer's block, he had to go to this convention and that convention, yadda, yadda, yadda....... I'm pretty angry that GRRM, whom we all thought would fill the void created when Robert Jordan turned into a literary prima donna, seems so dismissive of readers' frustration with the time between books and the short comings of Feast For Crows. Is there any point in my or other readers getting angry? Probably not. GRRM will finish Dances With Dragons in his own good time, and readers will buy it as quickly as drug addicts going through withdrawal. If Dances With Dragons does not get the series back on track I'm finished with it. I won't get sucked into another Wheel Of Time morass.

...Sad....

I dont know what it was about this book... I loved the first three! Even when he would make up new characters (probably to replace all the main characters that were killed in the previous novel) he still kept them intriguing and well developed. I started this book hoping that at least some of the original characters would appear sometime in the novel, but instead i was bombarded with dozens of new names to remember. I know this was only half of the book and the other half will tell of the previous characters' stories, but this doesnt make any sense... why didnt he incorporate them into this book, so at least some familiarity would be present... is the next book only going to be the new characters from the last book or the original characters? I couldnt even finish this book leading me to place all four books on the shelf. I might pick it up sometime again when i can find nothing good, but for now they collect dust.

An excellent story of not judging a book by its cover. There are many twists and turns in the plot which encourage the reader to continue with the story. Our four year old was able to figure out part of the plot before it happened, but it didn't ruin the story at all. This was one of our sons favorites of the Magic Tree House books.

I love the Magic Tree House books, and Summer of the Sea Serpent is a very cool Merlin Mission, but it is very mysterious and creepy. In one part, they went into a cave where the Spider Queen who lives inside it, the drawing looks creepy because the spider has about 13 eyes! And some other parts are mysterious, too. I really appreciate Mary Pope Osborne's great fantasy books, but this not exactly the best nor the worst. This was the classic fight of good versus evil. Only a woman could bring the salvation of one man. It was an enjoyable read, and I think Brenda Joyce is on the verge of something big.

I loved this book. I thought that it had everything, excitment, magic, love, constant suspense. I couldn't wait to get back to it during each break. I haven't read any of the previous books about Aiden. I think the plot explained why Aiden was dark and withdrawn as he was in mourning over his son and the betrayal of his evil father and what felt like desertion from the good power he served for many years. Oh, and he was born out of rape so that his mother couldn't even look at him. Isn't that enough to explain it all? I felt this book had alot of action that held my attention. I was sad when it ended.

Not Sexy Flirty Aidan but his evil 'twin' earns redemption in Dark Embrace

Even though this is not the story that I wanted for Aidan, Dark Embrace was the best of so far of the three Masters of Time stories. Joyce has finally worked out the kinks in her formula for these books. Her heroine Brie's empathic talent really gives foundation to her belief and trust in dark tormented half-demon Aidan that was so key to his redemption, making her willingness to cultivate friendship with the vengeful grief stricken Aidan, a man even his friends and family have written off as evil, an act of faith and purpose instead of one of annoying stupidity.

While I did like the book, I would have been exceedingly upset with Dark Embrace if I hadn't already known that Aidan in this story is not the the rakish flirting Aidan from the past two books - fortunately the excerpt in the last book gave me time to prepare. Still I really wish that Aidan was the one we got to read about. Oh well.

Instead of finishing off a triology, Dark Embrace is starting a new one about the witchy powered Rose women. Brie's relatives (cousins I think) are next up. We've already seen a bit of Tabby's future in the past (how confusing is that) with her mate and it looks like Sam and Nick will hook up in another. So look for Tabby to get her own medieval Highlander when the series continues with Dark Victory in March 2009.

Not the worse book I ever read either, but...

I wanted to like this book, I really did but, I didn't. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Joyce but I honestly expected more. I'll try reading one more of her books but for now, I'll stick with Lora Leigh & Gena Showalter.

This second Harper Connelly mystery is another great read. I love the premise of her main characters: Harper, a young woman who was struck by lightening as a young child, attaining the ability of finding dead bodies and glimpsing their final moments; and her supportive brother, Tolliver, who has his own quirks. In Grave Surprise, they are off on another complicated adventure that neatly segues from Book 1, A Grave Sight.

Charlaine Harris' stories are especially well written, I found myself totally engrossed in the story. Once again, the villain(s) were well hidden; the reader is near the end of the book, with a number of plausible characters able to fill the role, before figuring out who has done all the murdering.

I'm looking forward to Book #3.

Better the Book 1

I found this book even more interesting than "Grave Sight", but I am not sure I like the direction future plots will be taking.

A surprisingly excellent follow-up to the first book

I thought the first book was interesting enough to finish, but I wasn't "WOW"ed by it. I did go ahead and pick up the second in the series, out of curiosity. I love a good paranormal mystery and I do love the author's other series! Anyway, I'm glad I did. This book was fabulous....and much more interesting than the first! (Reading the first book, though, will definately help new readers to this series understand the history of the main characters). The characters were well fleshed out, in my opinion, and the mystery not only held my attention but had me stumped for a bit. Also, the subtle direction that the relationship took with the main characters has the potential to be quite interesting. The secondary characters were all very well written and contributed well to the story. Overall, I'm excited to read the next in the series!

An excellent mystery series!

I love to read mysteries but was quite skeptical when I saw the cover, title, and summary of this book since I'm not into anything supernatural, but I read an excerpt and was instantly drawn in and absolutely loved it. I passed it on to my mother-in-law and got her hooked too. After reading the books in this series I was so hooked on Charlaine Harris' writing that I read almost every single one of her many others. Definitely check her out. You won't be disappointed with this book.
