As a former elementary teacher and now a grandmother, I buy and enjoy a lot of children's books. I found this one by chance on line at Amazon, bought two for my grandsons (3 and 4). I was so impressed I even showed it to my husband who also thought it was just great for young children who enjoy super heroes and are learning their ABCs. This book is funny, colorful, and original. I highly recommend it. I may even buy another copy for my own collection of children's books.

I've only seen 30-word description of this book, but I believe that Franz Kafka is working his way out of the grave to protest this egregious and hackneyed rip-off of "The Metamorphosis". The author couldn't even change the name and type of insect from Kafka original dark story? What is this?

What a ride, like a giant roller coaster!

Review Date: 2008-07-27
This is the first in the series, and it is hard to get past the first 3 chapters. HOWEVER, hang in there, folks. Just like a roller coaster ride, the ride (or shall I say the read) clankity clanks up the reading tracks, takes a few yanks on your mind at first, and then wooosh! Downhill, sideways, upside down. When some of my Gr.5 students started to read the book, they dropped out after the first 3 chapters. They found the conversations of the cockroaches and the Underlanders hard to follow. Don't stop at the cockroches, folks. Forge ahead. Ride the bats with the Underlanders!
Take the plunge into the... ok, I won't give it all away. When I read the first 3 chapters aloud, my students got sucked into the book like Gregor got sucked into the underland, down the heatvent, down the sewers.... Then I started to read Chapter 4 and stopped....leaving the students to grapple for the book. Yes they did!
And just when you think Gregor was safe again at the end of the book....look out! The next adventure loomed...which makes Book 2 in the series another must read! Warning: when you read this book, make a chart of who is who, their roles, and the settings. Once the action picks up you won't have time to do the charting, and you won't know what "hit ya" towards the end of the book. So, make those character charts at the start and refer to them as you read through the book. Stay focused, because it is one wild ride of an adventure! This series puts Journey to the Center of the Earth (movie, any version) to shame! It's all in the mind, the mind shaft...your imagination, stuff that can never get put on the movie screen in the right way... The 2nd book is even wilder! Oh boy!Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane (The Underland Chronicles, Book 2)

When I needed to pick a book for AR, I chose Gregor the Overlander because I like fictional fantasy. The book started out slow because it only focused on one character, Gregor , in his apartment. The story picked up when he fell into the underland. At this point, the book became more interesting because fantastical creaters were introduced, like giant cockroaches and a giant rat named Ripred. As Gregor finds out someone he has been looking for is somewhere in the underland, the story becomes cool because it moves along and is interesting because of all the strange creatures they come across.I would recomend this book to anyone who loves fantasy stories.

My favorite book is Gregor the Overlander. The author is Suzanne Collins, and this book is science fiction.
My favorite character is Ripred. I like Ripred because he is very sarcastic. He is also an excellent fighter. Ripred also makes people sound stupid with his sarcasm.
I love this book because there are unexpected twists and turns. Some characters have very dry senses of humor. I also love the gruesome battles. The quite interesting prophecies that I like to try to figure out. The Gregor the Overlander books are a great series.
I like the authors writing style because it flows well, it's actiony and it keeps me hooked. I would recommend this book to fourth graders on.

GREGOR THE OVERLANDER is an outstaning book, wwith surprises around every corner.Seriosly, I could never guess what would happen next. This book will make you want to board up your air vents, and run in terror from every rat and spider you ever see. You will never see the world the same after reading this book for countless hours in your bed, on your couch, or wherever you like to read.
Gregor-an eleven year old boy who lives in a cramped apartment with his mom, a confused grandmother, a two year old sister(nicknamed "Boots"),and a seven year old sister-is the main character. The story begins as Gregor and his sister Boots-the girl who brings humor to the book so no one gets too scared- are doing laundry in here apartment when Boots gets sucked into an air vent. Gregor tries to pull her out, but in an attempt, gets sucked in too. The two siblings are soon in some underground world called "the Underland". This world is full of blond haired violet eyed warriors, who help Gregor and his sister boots on their quest to find their missing father and fufill the Prophecy of Gray. The Underland is also full of spiders (spinners), and roaches(crawlers). There are also some really big bats(flyers),and some really evil rats.
Sometimes the Underlanders dialog may be a little hard to understand because they have a language of their own. But it's nothing more than your simple "yoda talk". Suzzane collins has her own way to describe the underland too. She gives descriptions on how they get their water, why certian people ride on certian bats, who invented what, what things are made of, why they are made of what they made of, and sooooooo mush more. Read the book as soon as yu can because there are already more books in the serries, and more to come. Hope this review was helpful!

I took a break from reading dragonlance books for a long time and decided to start with the chronicles series and mix in a bit of these lost chronicles as i go.

I started with autumn twilight naturally and went straight into dwarven depths. The transition from one to the other is smooth. I wasn't sure if I should read this book or winter night. I opted to go with this one. It was a great read.

Then I went into winter night which is the reason I give this book one less star then a perfect five. I realized that the lost chronicles didn't really fit in so well. Looking back I could tell it was really forced. Spoiler: For example, Tanis goes through Thorbardin without any problems, nothing about his discomfort with enclosed spaces or anything, and then I read the beginning of winter night and suddenly he was very uncomfortable underground and wanted out as soon as possible. Or how Tas got the glasses or how he helped the knights. Or Kit's relationship with Skie is different in this one than it is in winter night. It just didn't feel right, in my opinion.

But all in all, by itself, the book is fun to get through, though the connections to the true chronicles were really forced in. I could overlook it easily enough and recommend this to fans of the series.

I'm a big fan of the original Weis and Hickman characters, so I was very excited with this series when it first came out. And once again, Weis and Hickman delivers. The Lost Chronicles fill in those gaps of the original chronicles, while letting us die-hards revisit our all time favorites such as Cameron, Tasslehoff, Tanis and all the other original heroes. Would highly recommend both volume one and two, and am anxiously waiting for the third installment coming out in May!

Ian Douglas is a good writer. He is Marine-centric and seems to feel there is little use for other services - not too much of a problem with that, but it leaves something to be desired.

His writing is decent and he kept me interested enough to read the trilogy. As I got through it all, I found that his push against the indomitable foe got a little far fetched. The character development also began to lag a bit as things went along. Overall, not bad sci-fi and it remained interesting enough.

Decent Action, but in Anachronistic Setting

LUNA MARINE (1999) is the 2nd book in THE HERITAGE TRILOGY, and continues the story of "Space Marines" in space-based battles occuring in a future war (2042) between the US/UK/Russia/Japan vs. The UN(EU-UK+PRC+India+3rd World).

Book 1 of the trilogy covered MARS-based battles and Millenia old alien artifacts uncovered on the Red Planet. This book covers Moon-based battles, and additional old (8K years) alien artifacts uncovered on the far side of The Moon.

I have the same praises and criticisms for this book, that I made regarding the first book... the biggest criticism is the Global Warming angle to the story - it is much more prevalent(and obviously misguided) in this book vs. the first book, and makes it hard to imagine the story as being something that could actually happen 30 years in the future.

Review Date: 2008-05-18
Ian Douglas' work is new to me. It is very much in the space/military traditions of the late Bob Heinlein and Gordon Dickson, David Drake, Steve White, David Weber et al. The first book in the trilogy Semper Mars is a rattling good read, based on the alien artefacts found at the so-call "face on Mars" at Cydonia.

In the first volume, we have a US government, with few allies Russia and the UK facing Hispanic invasion from the South to claim "Azlatan" and the Quebequois threatening from the North. The UN is now the arguably most dominant power on Earth and intent on one-world government- the staple diet of right-wing conspiracy theorists and Bush-haters on the net. The US government is looking to disband the US Marines, naturally against their wishes. The UN seizes the International Space Station and facilities on Mars, using the French Foreign Legion as shock troops.

The Marine counter-attack on Mars and in orbit succeeds but now the USMC has to seize Lunar facilities held by the UN and Lt Kathleen Galloway, daughter of a USMC hero in Semper Mars, plays a leading part. The Luna Marine is totally dependent on the the first volume which makes it hard to criticise as a standalone - it doesn't work that way. For those who enjoy the genre, Ian Douglas looks promising, even to the older reader. I wish him well - Semper Fi!

The plot of part one continues. With the characters we came to know and love on Mars and an excellent storyline. Not only were there ruins on Mars, but there is something going on on the moon aswell and was it ever our moon? The Marines are as allways on the frontline.

Stella looks after all the special Christmas lights - from the overhead illuminations,to the Christmas tree fairy lights, right through to the twinkling stars. Three magic Christmas baubles control all of these elements but now Jack Frost's goblins have stolen them. There's not going to be any Christmas atmosphere and Santa won't even be able to guide his sleigh through the night sky. Stella the Star Fairy needs Rachel and Kirsty's help to get the baubles back.

My daughters love this series!

To any who have hesitated in getting this book . . .

Review Date: 2008-08-24
I am reading The 12th Planet (for the second time, so it can come together for me). When I first started reading it I was very curious about Enki, and wanted to order this book. I changed my mind because of the reviews on here. I was turned off by the poetic stuff, and just wasn't interested in reading it. But the more I continued reading, the more curious I became about Enki, and finally my curiosity got the best of me (it usually does)! I have started reading this book, and just can't put it down. I am now about three fourths of the way through the book, and just had to stop to come write this, in case there were others who were hesitating like I was. I didn't want to read poetry, nor things I didn't really understand. This book is not like that at all. It is written in lines, but they don't rhyme. It is an interesting kind of wording, but one I quickly became used to, and which is not irritating to me at all. It's amazing the amount of knowledge that this man (and Enki) pack away in this fashion, in this book. This book is absolutely mind-boggling, thrilling and absorbing. I am constantly amazed at how ZS takes so many different sources (i.e. greek mythology, egyptian mythology, biblical history, archaeology, science, and many others) and combines them into one coherent whole! He has also included an excellent, inclusive glossary.

While I have not by any means made my mind up yet (like it matters one whit what I believe), I have to say I am extremely impressed with what this man has accomplished (Enki too, by the way)!

So if you're hesitating at all, I'd advise you to take the plunge! This book is totally phenomenal! I also would give it 10 stars! Now I have to go finish the book!

P.S. OK, I came back. I saw that there is no 'look inside' to this book, so I'm going to type you up a sample of the writing, so you can see for yourself if it's something you can read or not (this is just a sample I pulled out of the middle of the book)(It is double-spaced like this through the whole book, which makes it very easy to read):

To Nibiru I wish to return! to his two sons did Anu say.

Beforehand upon Alalu there must be a judgment; a sentence the

crime befitting must be imposed!

By the laws of Nibiru seven judges were required, the highest of

rank on them to preside.

In the square of Eridu the heros were assembled the trial of Alalu

to observe.

For the Seven Who Judge, seven seats were provided; for Anu,

presiding, the tallest seat was prepared.

Don't let the bad publicity against Mr. Sitchin influence your mind.
Many jealous people and especially failed writers hate him.
We all understand that.
There is a person in America who asked the authorities to put him in jail.
Crazy! Only in America people massacre others with dirty words, personality assassination and personal hatred. What they do?
They are incapable of writing successful books so they began to throw dirt from their mouth and snake-style criticism.
Mr. Sitchin is a remarkable writer. Respected all over the world.
I collect all his books.

Review Date: 2008-05-27
When i got this book i was amazed for it's nothing like the 12th planet. It's as though Sitchin forgoes any and all explanations and simply offers us the writings of Enki as a kind of Bible book. So the entire book is just a translation of Enki's writings that have been found in various sources but in reading the book one sees that this is in itself so profound and enlightening that one doesn't miss any explanations much [sometimes you find yourself thinking "but what about...?", though].

To understand what's out there you MUST read this book. When i started looking into UFO's and deeper truths i asked some friends online what they thought would be good to read and that's why i bought this book and they were right. What is the face on Mars? What are the pyramids and what are they for? Especially Bible fans will be needing to read this one. The landing of Enki on Earth and his first days here turn out to be what turned into the very first verses of the Bible. These and many other fundamental questions are answered in this book.
You must read it. Together with Sitchin's The 12th Planet, Willam Bramley's Gods of Eden, and William Cooper's Behold a Pale Horse this is one of the books you need to understand what's going on in the world today, what went on in the past, and what's going to happen in the near future. I thought the book was wordy and wandered around a lot. I found it hard to like Raine, or to care if she ever got rid of the link. It seemed to me that the book was written to stretch the tale into a three book series, but it may have been better to leave it as one grand adventure.

A strong female character that for the most part is not perfect, fantastic. How many times have you read a book where the main character, male or female, is perfect? There's no tension, no anticipation, since you already know that she or he will come out on top and they will obtain everything they always wanted. While Raine manages to get though all sticky situations, a little scratch might be nice. I don't want the character hurt, just a little scratch.

Mychael is one of those characters you just want to root for; he is the hero in the true sense of the word, not just martial courage. He'll stand up for what is right and will defend it even if he does bend the rules. He's smart, handsome but with a bit of mystery, somehow you know there is a lot more to the man that the author hasn't yet revealed.

And I liked Tam's entrance, his timing couldn't have been better but then that's how the author planned it. Tam is your typical, well not quite typical bad boy. Dangerous to be around but you want to be, good both in a fight and bed, based on his reputation and a kiss that Raine still remembers.

While the book is a fantasy, the author presents a cast of characters that are believable, one my favorites is Piaras.

And I like the love triangle between the main characters but I hope it will be resolved in the next book. (I'm voting for Mychael; for once let the clean cut guy win).

The action scenes are well scripted and move at a breakneck speed. Ms. Shearin's descriptions are perfect. Enough detail to give the reader a picture of the characters and settings without being bogged down. Sorry but I still have a problem with handsome goblins. ;-)

The author manages to wrap up the story while leaving the reader just enough to look forward to the next book and I am definitely looking forward to the next book which I read will be out in 2009. Hopefully it will be closer to the beginning of the year then the end.

Elves to the left of her, goblins to the right....and all Raine wants is OUT! After trying to help her friend she wound up with this magic stone the Saghred - otherwise known as the Soul Stealer - and next thing she knew it liked her! Now she was stuck with it, and everyone wanted a piece of her - well, the stone, really, they didn't really want her. But since it hadn't driven her insane, as it was known to do with anyone else who had touched it, a lot of questions were being tossed around. But since her mild Seeker skills had increased exponentially, as well, not too many of those questions were being asked to her face.

For now Raine and her friends have taken amnesty on the Isle of Mid with the Guardians. Raine's father, the former custodian of the Saghred, was a Guardian; they are all hoping that the stone may be contained there at the sorcery school. The spell shields help contain the stone while it is dormant, but soon trouble finds it's way to the island and Raine and her friends are soon at the eye of the storm.

Unfortunately, the Isle of Mid is also home to the Conclave, the sorcerer's governing body. It is clear that many of the sorcerers want the Saghred for their own - the power it holds draws the greed of many - but Raine is not one of the many. She stumbled upon these changes and simply wants her life back, but is slowly realizing that nothing will ever be the same again. But what will never change is how important her friends and family matter - and having this much power to control is teaching her to limit her trust in others more quickly than usual.
When the school's best spell-singer students begin to disappear - and Raine is afraid her adopted brother Piaris is next - Raine decides that she must use the power she has despite the danger of the Saghred gaining strength over her - and her losing control.

I wasn't sure how well I liked this series, even though I read straight through the first book and picked up the second and did the same. It is an unusual sci fantasy series, not like one I've read before: yes, the magic rock, the increased powers, etc. But there is still something different that I haven't been able to pinpoint, and I still cannot say positive or negative. I'll have to say I like it because I am looking forward to the next one to see what happens. Intriguing. Not gory or anything, and not a lot of mushy sex or anything - some romance, but nothing explicit. Teasing, maybe. But interesting. I guess I'll just have to wait.

Another bouncing and magic filled adventure with Raine, an elf seeker.

It was interesting watching squabbles between different fractions, and we got to know a bit more about the magic system and the world this time.
The two serious love interests, Tam and Mychael, played quite big parts in the story, as did the infamous rogue of a cousin, Phaelan.

Lined with action, a ample portion of magic explosion, seasoned with Raine's sarcasm, and sprinkles of fascinaating supporting characters, Armed and Magical is a great and fun read, totally worth taking up book shelf space.

When I bought this book, I had no idea what it was about...other than it had dragons in it..
So, I start reading it, and once I caught wind that this book has woven history in it...I started to become a non-believer. When they seized the dragons egg, that's when I'd had enough.
Frankly if she had written the book, without the history in it, I might have believed it more... If the story is strong enough, it shouldn't need the history in it..
She took a risk, and for me as a reader, it didn't pay off.

An Exciting Surprise!

I picked this up as it looked intriguing, I am always ready for a good dragon tale.... This caught my attention form the first pages. Novik does a splendid job with her characters. History has always interested me, but I know very little about Nelson, Trafalgar or Napoleon. I have only read this one book, but plan on getting the rest. I am hooked!

Another excellent dragon author

One of the best books I have ever read...I loved to idea of Historic facts...With the addition of an air corp...I like the way she took Dragons and made them more realistic such as fire breathing is a rare gift of only certain breeds...Who would have thought of that...I give this book 5 stars...

Get ready to be captivated

Get ready to be captivated as Naomi Novik draws us into an alternate history where humans and dragons join forces in the war against Napoleon. For every fan of Patrick O'Brien, Alexander Kent and Anne McCaffrey this is fantastic stuff which left us eagerly devouring this series. If you loved the Patricia Briggs Dragon Bones and Dragon Blood, ensure you get all five of these at once - you'll want to read them immediately!

Margred is a selkie. Able to shift shape and live either as a human or a seal, Margred is a widow and has gone without the sexual touch of a mate for many years. Finally, however, her need for touch and the warmth of another has driven her to shore and an island called World's End. Carefully hiding her pelt, a selkie's greatest possession and treasure, Margred begins her hunt for the perfect man. She finds him in the form of island Police Chief Caleb Hunter, a veteran of the Iraqi war and a local islander.

Caleb Hunter is a one-man force. As far as law enforcement goes, he is it. Fielding yet another call from an irate islander complaining of a bonfire on the beach, Caleb is astonished to see the beautiful dark eyed woman staring at him across the flames. Attraction flares in her eyes and Caleb finds himself instantly lured to her side where sparks fly.

Margred and Caleb spend hours satisfying each other but as soon as Caleb's guard is down, Margred disappears, taking Caleb's heart with her. Unable to forget her, Caleb spends the next few days searching the beach looking for the sensuous siren that fills his thoughts and haunts his dreams. The lovers are reunited once again when Caleb rescues her after an assault. Margred states she can't remember her attacker and Caleb knows she is withholding information. He has to earn her trust - he yearns for it. But, he is ill prepared for her story.

I read Virginia Kantra's novella, `Sea Crossing' in the Shifter anthology a few short weeks ago and since that time, I have been dying for the release of Sea Witch. Sea Witch has combined paranormal elements with legend and lore to equal a sensuous, sultry, and suspenseful tale. The epitome of an avenging hero, Caleb's desire to protect Margred was noteworthy and I loved watching them fall in love with each other.

Sea Witch is exactly what I wanted it to be and I have no choice but to Joyfully Recommend this endearing and provocative novel.

SEA WITCH hooked me in from the first sentence until the absolute last word. Virginia Kantra did a masterful job at world building the paranormal elements until I totally believed the Children of the Sea could be living here in my own seaside town. Caleb was mega yummy and Maggie completely enchanting - what a hot couple! I love, love, loved this book! Can't wait to get my hands on SEA FEVER. For a sure fire page turning beach read, submerge yourself in this sexy, mystical adventure!

Unusual but captivating....

Police Chief Caleb Hunter never expected to find a woman as alluring as Margred along the shoreline of World's End. Caleb is a man seeking only peace, a job that he can relax and try to forget the horrors of war. Margred shines like a beacon of hope to him, but she has a secret she knows he won't possibly believe. Margred is a selkie and everyone knows selkies are not meant for everlasting love with humans. Or are they? Meanwhile, the quiet island now harbors a darkness that threatens Margred's entire existence. Will Caleb believe Margred is a selkie in time to stop the evil that lurks on the island?

Atmosphere is key to the success of SEA WITCH. Virginia Kantra creates a very haunting, almost mystical mood that makes the selkie legends seem alive. One can easily envision both the island of World's End as well as the selkies' island Sanctuary through Ms. Kantra's vivid descriptions.

Virginia Kantra does a great job with character development. Margred is a bit distant initially, as befitting a selkie. The changes that occur in her help propel the story, as she is woman unused to caring for anyone but herself. Caleb challenges all that she knows and believes about herself and her race. Caleb is a great contrast to Margred, a man with deep emotional scars after a life of sacrifice. Whether fighting for his country or looking after his family, Caleb has willingly put aside his own needs. And yet despite their differences, Caleb and Margred share one thing in common... both are lonely and see potential happiness in the other.

SEA WITCH is an unusual story, one that draws the reader into the dark but oh so captivating world of the selkies. I've read other paranormal short stories by Virginia Kantra and am glad to see her style translates well into a full length paranormal tale. Easily recommended!

I am not a big fan of the paranormal romance novel. I think there are so many of them that calling them cliche is too mild a term. What is worse is that so many of them seem like it is the same story written over and over again.

But Sea Witch (Children of the Sea, Book 1) gives the subgenre a nice boost in the right direction.

Caleb Hunter is a former soldier and big city policeman. Understandably, he has returned home to an island off the coast of Maine called World's End. He's come back because he wants a simpler life.

Margred is a child of the sea. Literally. She's a selkie who is 700 years old and she comes to shore in search of sex and she chooses Caleb as her target.

The story opens as simple as that. She wants him, she lets him know, he backs off but can't quite forget her. He searches her out again and they have their tryst. After that, it is she who can't quite forget him.

And that's where the main narrative begins and Ms Kantra does a wonderful job of keeping the balance between explaining the mythical (and making it seem plausible), a believable romance, and a small town murder mystery with distinctive characters.

The story is well paced and never overdone. Events that unfold are described in such a fashion that it never feels rushed or convoluted. Secondary characters are given enough distinction that they don't feel like props to the main characters.

And the main characters are likable without being too perfect. Caleb is no rich man. He lives in a one bedroom apartment. He has issues with his father. He has a limp he acquired from his stint in the Iraq war. He has a few nightmares too. Margred is a selkie who is forced to be a human for an indeterminate amount of time. She's fairly sure she doesn't want to stay that way. She has moments of cowardice and indecision.

But these quirks of theirs never overpower or overtake Caleb and Margred's innate goodness. The quirks just make them accessible and relatable and easy to spend time with.

So easy that I read this novel in one evening. The story flow was simply that smooth and enjoyable.

And already I'm looking forward to more from Ms Kantra and the good news for me is that her next Children of the Sea novel, Sea Fever (Children of the Sea, Book 2), is coming out in August 2008. Based on the quality of Sea Witch (Children of the Sea, Book 1), I can't wait!

I really thought this book would be great and looked forward to reading it. It was not nearly as good as it could have been. The main character Marty was so incredibly annoying. I wanted to gag every time she spoke. The other characters in the book were o.k. but i just felt like Marty did not deserve to be happy because she is such a brat. A guy like Keegan would never fall for a self centered, shallow fool like Marty.

If you like Stephanie Plum and always wondered what would happen if she got bitten by a werewolf, and/or the sex scenes were more graphic, then this is the book for you....

Marty Andrews was bitten by Keegan Flaherty, by mistake. At least that is what Keegan is trying to convince Marty, but she is having none of it. She was bitten by a big dog and Keegan is anything but a dog.

While in werewolf form Keegan is drawn by the scent of Marty. He accidentally bites her turning Marty into a werewolf. Trying to convince Marty she is a werewolf is going to be harder than he expected.

When Marty is kidnapped she calls on Keegan for help. Can Keegan convince Marty she's a werewolf? Will Marty fit into Keegan's world or will his pack be too much for her to handle?

The Accidental Werewolf is a crazy thrill ride with a couple bumps along the way. It started off a little slow for me and I wasn't sure if I was going to like Marty, but she grows on you. Marty is a little neurotic, but funny in her own way. Keegan has the patience of a saint and he needs it to deal with Marty. Dakota Cassidy does a wonderful job with twists and turns that kept me guessing. The Accidental Werewolf is wonderfully quirky and I hope Ms. Cassidy writes more on the Flaherty family.

I enjoyed this book. It was a funny and easy read. However I could tell it was the author's first published book. There was a sense that she couldn't decide which way to go with the story, lighthearted and no real danger to her characters, or more serious with real danger lurking. There are a couple of plot points that were repeatedly brought up that were glossed over in the end.
But overall I enjoyed it and will read her next book.

Strange book, strange title.

I saw mostly all of 5 star reviews for this book. But, the book did not live up to their reviews. How can I trust amazon and the reviews given to books now?
