Ah, EMS sold these for a short stint in the early 90s (1992 or so). This was such a great book for the beginning experimenter, in fact some topics have stuck in my mind and helped me on science topics i'll tackle later in life...e.g. noone in my AP chem class knew what 'agar' was!

I am 20 years old now and I still remember when I got this book and read it for the first time. It made science so cool and was a great way to show kids how science can be cool. I actually just found this book in a big stack and decided to look it up on Amazon. GREAT to hear they still sell it. I recommend this book to every kid!

Like another reviewer, I recently found this on my shelf and was curious to see whether it was in print. I'm 22 now and must've been around 8 when I got it.
I'm in University now, studying software engineering, and I have to say that this book really spurred my interest in science. It comes with so many cool things, a magnet, agar, diffraction grating, and a fresnel lens.
Highly recommend this to parents, aunts, and uncles looking for an awesome gift for a youngster in the family. The kid won't be disappointed once they get into it after expecting an action figure or video game.

A very nice book that helps you to understand better the point of view of Native Americans about their relationship with Mother Earth. And that helps all of us to follow their spirit if we want to restore what we are and our little and beautiful planet.
Definitely worth it!

I am a Native American through blood and I can honestly say I was not brought up in any special way and that large part of my heritage was never really acknowledged. Nevertheless, I have always been up on it, I pray to The Great Spirit and so on. I purchased this book because I knew some of the context but I was more interested in learning about other tribes and their stories and such in comparison to my own since I already knew those ones. This book is great and awesome for anyone who is studying Native American symbols, stories, and ceremonies. There are, in fact, some things that are not necessarily completely true-like the owl omen for instance. I think it is geared toward a more nuetral instance in comparison to an everynight occurence, but I will never know. Although, everything else is pretty justifiable and quite informational. Definitely get this book!

This is one of Bobby Lake Thom's books that changed my life in a very Positive and Spiritual way. The knowledge in this book comes from experience and training in the medicine way. Native Healer, Bobby Lake Thom (Medicine Grizzly Bear) shares his wisdom and experience to the reader about the importance of honoring nature and the Great Creator everyday of our lives by becoming aware of our natural surroundings in nature. I am very GRATEFUL for this book and the other books that Bobby wrote. It teaches and informs the reader about nature symbols, spirits, healing and knowledge. This book is a must for anyone in search of spiritual healing and knowldege. Bobby has the experience and training from several elders(Medicine Men and Women) in his lifetime from many different tribes. Readers should also look for the books Native Healer and Call of The Great Spirit by the same author. Again THANK YOU again for a very powerful spiritual tool Mr. Bobby Lake Thom! May the Great Creator and Good Spirits in Nature Bless You and your family Forever! I Highly recommend this book to everyone interested in Spiritual Knowledge and Healing!

I ,and my family, use this book all the time as a field guide to interpret natural signs and omens in nature. This book is an authentic, true guide to how many native people look at the natural world and how it trys to guide and assist us in our lives.Bobby has done a great job, weaving traditional stories and short interpretations on each animal, insect or birds being discussed.Especially instructive was the section on how to use the creative, right brain to intuit the language of nature.Native people do not write in a overly intellectual or complex style .The teachings and beauty is in the simplicity and heart of the words. This book speaks to your mind yet on the spiritual level too.Great book!!!!!!!

Animals have been living on Earth and dealing with nature a lot longer than us. They can sense when an Earthquake is about to happen. Pets can sense an illness within their owner before the owner does. Birds, insects, and other animals have evolved and adapted to deal with floods, climate changes and dangers that happen in their lives. Why NOT use their reactions and knowledge to help us deal with nature and our own dangers?
American Indians have been listening to nature and the animals to help them deal with such dangers. Early Europeans did the same before Modern Science and the Church destroyed those cultures. While I am not sure about many of the stories I did enjoy the book. It is for beginners and I think many details have been withheld so not to make the exercises and the ceremonies beyond the grasp of the person just starting his or her spiritual quest. Think of it as a Spirits of the Earth for Dummies.

This book is a must-read every autumn in our home and was purchased for us by Grandma who saw how enthusiastically one of her other grandchildren responded to it. When I surprised them with it last night at bedtime, (along with When Autumn Comes, also recommended) they hung on every word. This book is both colorful and educational and has become a "classic" seasonal book for our family. My daughters (now age 9) plan to read it to their 5-6 y/o school book-buddy this year. You can't go wrong with this selection.

What first caught my attention, was the bright textured orange cover. Simple, but beautiful.
The illustrations are collages of real objects, leafs, and colorful paper cut outs.
The design is unique, with 2 of the pages having leaf-shaped holes on them.
The story is about a kid and his/her tree and the last 4 pages have very interesting information on trees, seeds, and even how to make a bird treat.
If your kids love trees and nature, this book is a must.

The illustrator uses vivid photographs, paper cut images, nature colors and pressed leaves to illustrate a child's description of a seed growing to a sapling. The writing consists of nice large letters and smaller typed descriptions of 'bird treat' or 'sugar maple', 'round-pointed spade' or 'downy woodpecker'. The last four pages of the book are an indepth look at leaves, buds, roots and sap, bar, seeds, etc. Great book to read to kids in the fall days. Good to use with an exercise of asking kids to go outside and each bring in something different. As you read the book to them, they will have a tactile example to go along with the pages in the book.

A child recounts the life of a maple tree selected from a nursery to grow in the family's yard. Although it's narrated by a person, the natural world or plants and animals are the primary focus. Hands involved in the various stages of planting are the only human elements included in the illustrations. Taking the tree from a tiny seed in a maple key, to a young seedling, to a leafy haven for birds, to a glorious display of autumnal reds and yellows, Ehlert uses simple cut paper and textured collage against primary backgrounds to illustrate this simple story that's rich in color and love of nature. Following the story Ehlert includes simple scientific facts and illustrated information about trees as well as detailed instructions for planting a tree and making treats for the birds. An excellent addition to a fall story time or classroom science segment. Ages 3-6.

Practical Photovoltaics is one of the finest, most comprehensive guides to the world of solar energy. The book starts with a beginer's course in solid state physical devices (which taught even an Electrical Engineer such as myself new things) and leads into the history of solar cell materials and procedures over the years. Next comes an in-depth discussion of the various types of materials, and how they are suited for different applications. He makes logical predictions about the future of some of these materials, and hints around at what new techniques scientists are starting to look at today.
In the appendix, he even describes how to assemble your own array of solar cells for those who wish to try a hands-on approach to learning.
Oh, yeah, one more thing: he has a decent list of recomended readings at the end of each chapter, allowing you to select topics that interest you to continue your reading.

Although the book is aimed at binocular observers, it also makes a nice, portable "best of the sky" guide for people with small telescopes or anyone just starting out with a telescope. It's particularly attractive for those of us who like to take a telescope when we travel. Travel telescopes are usually small, and often we're using them to show the wonders of the sky to interested friends, relatives, or fellow travelers. That means that most of the time we're going to be looking at the best and brightest celestial objects, and the 99 chosen here are a great start for experienced observers and probably all that newcomers will need for a while. The book folds flat and has just one or two objects per page so it's easy to use and not at all intimidating or overwhelming. I like it better as a telescopic observing guide than many of the guides written just for telescope users.

Read Gary Seronik's introduction only if you've been looking for a reason to commit suicide. "When the view is fine...we are transported far from our daily cares and concerns, into the true vastness and AWFUL INDIFFERENCE of the universe." Then he quotes a Frenchman: "The greatest mystery is not that we have been FLUNG AT RANDOM between the profusion of matter and of the stars, but that within THIS PRISON we can draw from ourselves images powerful enough to DENY OUR NOTHINGNESS." A page and a half into the handbook and I almost want to chuck it--and my binoculars--and my life--out the window! Fortunately, my faith informs me that we have value and meaning and purpose, that our existence is not random, so I guess I'll proceed to page three.

I have been satisfied, but not overwhelmed with the book. I do like the charts, which always highlight the field of view for typical 10x50s. And the writer sometimes notes nearby objects along with the one on hand. But I agree with a previous reviewer that page space is not always used well. I'd say it's worth the price, especially if you're new to the pastime. I'd also recommend it for anyone using a small "department store" telescope; stay with the low-power eyepiece, and enjoy the sights from this book. Note that some "small telescope" books (say, Consolmagno & Davis) include most of the same objects, and highlight their binocular visibility-.

I had to purchase a Sciensaurus book for a college class and this book was an add on (buy two for less money). This is the book I use!
My 6th grade students were beginning their science fair projects and didn't have access to the internet. This is where I sent them for ideas.
The experiments are simple, the materials are minimal, the "science" is included but not primary, it is truly for those people who want their kids to experience the "hands-on" of science.
The index is set up in a chart so you can choose the topic~ earth, seasons, animals, rocks...across the top and then follow the column down to get all of the experiment options.
This book could keep a science teacher busy with experiments for an entire school year plus some!

I am so glad to discover this book is still available. It's far more comprehensive and intelligent than so many other activity books. Laid out clearly, with activities in various realms of knowledge that offer numerous variations so a parent could conceivably use this one book throughout a child's school years. I can't imagine a child not discovering the joys of science (broadly defined) when a parent introduces him or her to some of these delightful activities. The best thing about the book is that so many of the ideas don't require vast preparation, but can be done spur-of-the-moment.
Highly recommend this book for demos and Science Club

I used this book for Science Club for years and found it invaluable. I would highly recommend it for any teacher who runs Science Club or needs a supply of demos. Invaluable!

I've used this book for several years as a teacher, and found it gone from my bookshelf. It's great. It has everything. And it's written well and clearly. A very eclectic collection, but sound.
Creative, inexpensive ideas

I've used many of the activities. Either as a demo, as a "set" or for students to do. The materials needed for the activities are inexpensive. The ideas presented in the book are creative and allow you to spend more "brain power" on other things. It includes all areas of science, no matter what you teach, it can fit in. I've used it for 9th and 10th and don't feel it is too "elementary". It's worth the money.
