A definitely useful book for a man...

I think many of a man would benefit tremendously from such a book, because it would help us figure out what's a better way to deal with a woman as a woman and not trying to deal with a woman as a man. Of course, it is hard to really distinguish males from females in terms of thinking. I think from what I read the extremely feminine woman that he describes who changes too much with the wind would not be my cup of tea. I've been with one like that, and things are too predictable. I prefer my woman to be more of a straight shooter. She can have her moods, be typical in many ways, but I think I prefer males or females I am dealing with to show consistency rather than simply changing based on feelings. I am a planner, and it is hard to plan if someone changes like the North Texas weather. Many women are not like that, but this is definitely a useful book for us males to respect women for how they and how they are different and to honor those differences while keeping our respect and sanity as males.

This book and seminar lays out material on how to be the best man you can be. If this was required reading half of the failed relationships out there would either work themselves out or be cut off too early to be a problem. If men took the responsibility to understand themselves and how women view their actions we would all be much happier. Instead we can't understand our women and flounder until finally nobody is happy and we break up or divorce. David Deida lays out, in simple terms, how men can understand and even revel in the emotional storm that women are. This manual can not be recommended highly enough.

Ugh, what a load of bull. How do people keep making money off the tired old "men are *active*, women *receptive* stereotypes? People are people, and Deida is a jerk who sees women as subhuman.

I bought this for my boyfriend because the book completely transformed his life. He really loves the additional things Deida covers in the sessions, and he likes being able to listen to it while he's driving or working. He's made a lot of personal discoveries with it, and says that there is something different about hearing a human voice that drives some of the points home. Plus, Deida elaborates in the sessions, and can give it an even more personal touch.

I wish I agreed that this book deserves four stars - because that would mean that I was able to read through the book and attain some good information from it, which I was not. I am an avid reader with a college education, so my trouble is not illiteracy. It is the format of the book - a rolling description of what happened on stage at one of his seminars. It is written like a play with stage direction. The dialogue might have made sense if the author had left out unimportant fill like "um...am I supposed to be using empathy now or how I usually speak?" I could barely follow it, and after a handful of attempts found myself frustrated because I believe there is some good material somewhere in there! I will still give his other books a try IF they are written in a different format, but this is the first time I've truly regretted spending money on a book.

If you want to make your relationships healthy and positive read this book for help. Since reading it my communication skills are so much better as I am able express myself in a positive clear manner.

A decade of M/s knowledge in one book

Both books Master/slave Relations: Handbook of Theory and Practice and
Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave: Theory and Practice by Robert J. Rubel, PhD
Cover the same subject with a slightly different focus.

It amazes me that knowledge that took me years to learn is now available in 7 easy steps. The book can accelerate your journey into BDSM by a decade.

How to write a manual for your slave ... kinda.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-02
Now that you have a slave, what do you do with him or her? I'll tell you right now that this book will not answer that question for you. And for what the introduction claims the book is, it could be a far better guide to how to write "a master manual." The problem is that I've read no other book like it, and am uncertain of where else to point the hopeful reader who doesn't have a leather or kink community available as a local resource. if one keeps the introduction in mind and questions oneself as to what is really, really important in their day-to-day life as is, one can get an idea of how to assign tasks, train and remind a slave or submissive in how to serve specific interests.

Regarding the seemingly endless section about the dinner parties: if you don't have dinner parties, mentally substitute something that you find too time consuming to do yourself, but that you'd love to have someone else take care of for you. Preparing for and attending an Society of Creative Anachronism event? Tending to your artistic space? Buying produce? Tending to your feet? Really, anything truly nitpicky that you want done a certain way -- that section shows you how to give step-by-step detail in writing that a slave or submissive can refer to as they're doing the task.

Other tasks have detail given their importance TO THE AUTHOR. If there are things that the dominant / owner / daddy/ master (hereby known as the grand poobah, because I'm getting sick of typing all that) wants to do themselves, then they either get to specify that those actions are off limits unless specifically mentioned, or don't list them at all. Cleaning? What can be touched, and what should be left alone? How often? Spring cleaning? Seasonal changes, visits, decorations, etc? Who drives? How is the opening of doors dealt with? Dietary preferences and restrictions? If taken with the required grain of salt mentioned in the introduction, this book could help a lot of new people go from having their submissives post about looking for ideas for their grand poobah to having details instructions and a schedule already prepared after the contract is signed and the (training / temporary) collar is locked on.

I wish that Rubel had taken the time to outline his manual as he was presenting his information, as I've read reviews and even talked to people within my community who took offense at his tone because he wasn't being clear on providing a roadmap rather than specific expectations of behavior for all slaves. Indeed, a section regarding the potentially rude behaviors of guests at the above mentioned dinner parties would have been much more clear had it been explained why detailing such rude behavior was necessary to include in the manual; I can make some intelligent guesses, but it seems as though the manual involves a lot of in-references between the author and his slave that should have either been explained or edited out completely. Sidebars, more asides in italics and so on could have gone a long way to keeping otherwise normally intelligent and perceptive people from reading what they were used to reading -- lists of expected behaviors -- rather than what was being presented -- an outline of how to generate the behaviors the dominant reading the book would want for their particular life.

If this book ever ends up going out of print, I hope that the author redesigns it in a second edition rather than simply allow another printing of the same format. When presented in the right way, this could end up being a very valuable workbook for a number of budding ... well, poobahs.

Less time on Differences, More Time on Realistic Questions

I consider this an expansion in many ways of the Leather Protocols book by Rubel. Here he gives more explicit examples of his own protocols and asks the reader to really consider what they might include and should include in their own should they chose the very, very rare path of an owner-slave or master-slave relationship. Personally my own protocols (yes, I do live this life, too) are not nearly as formal but these are very much the same considerations I felt were necessary to address when I began and as I continue in this life. Take the questions seriously don't just copy Rubel's ideas. Also don't plan on just jumping quickly into these relationships -- success requires planning and continuous reflection.

What a surprise

Wow! An A to Z discussion of what goes into developing and maintaining a Leather Master/slave relationship. This guy clearly knows what he's talking about. Rubel begins by defining his terms, moves through self examination, touches on ways of finding a slave, describes how to begin such a relationship, moves through collars and contracts and ends up with a slightly irreverent section called: "How's it Going?" All in all, this book provides a comprehensive and fresh look at this form of relationship. You should also check out his companion book, Protocols for the Leather Slave. Judging from the covers, they are probably meant to be companion works.

I've always considered myself an intelligent, sensitive, and practical woman, with many talents and abilities. I have had several successful and even glamourous jobs in the arts and in publishing. In contrast to my professional accomplishments, my relationships with men have been unmitigated disasters. Absolutely clueless about men and what they need, I ruined my relationships with fear, self-pity, mistrust, and the need to prove my independence and personal excellence. I also tried to control men by demanding proofs of affection, and often men would end up doing exactly what I feared most: leaving me or cheating on me.

I am now much wiser for having read this book. By applying this book's principles, for the first time I have an adoring, appreciative, and affectionate man. He seems to delight in taking care of me and making me happy. I'm thrilled that Doyle's practical concept of conscious serenity has worked so well, and I sincerely recommend this book to all women who want to win a good husband.

It's hard to put into words everything I've gained and continue to gain from this book. This book is very special and so refreshing...it has taught me to be charming and flirtatious but graceful...my whole attitude towards men has changed, I'm more approachable and I don't feel confused about how to date and how to act anymore. I feel way more open and I feel like I've become more charismatic and open and I feel better about myself. I bought a copy for my best friend and she is loving it too.

It makes you examine your negative attitudes toward dating, men, and marriage because they are holding you back. It also shows you how to let men ask you out instead of chasing them. I think us girls get confused about how to do this, and in a graceful way not in a playing games way. It's gotten me awesome results.

This book truly is a gem and worth your time! I wish I had read it years ago!

A friend highly recommended this book to me, and I was reluctant to buy it because of the title. However, I've come to love this book, and I'm not even finished reading it. Doyle's advice is right on the mark. The very first day I tried some of her advice, I was approached by an attractive man many years younger than me. Normally, I would not have given him an opening to do so and would have considered him far too young for me, but by taking Doyle's advice (it's simple and fun -- smile!!!), I met someone really intelligent, interesting, and exceptional. And this was on the first day! The best part was that I was not in any way nervous like I normally would be. I just went with Doyle's advice to let him approach me -- all I had to do was give him an opening and decide whether I liked him once he did. And because I'd been smiling at guys all day (with nearly all of them smiling back), I felt confident and relaxed, and knew that if this one didn't work out, someone else would. I wish I'd known all this years ago!

It's rare that I give five stars to any book. It really has to have given me helpful and useful insights, which in this case, this book did both. Yes, there's some common sense stuff, but a lot of it is just how the author approaches the topic. I'm one of those independent tough cookies who has done quite well at not being vulnerable. I tend to scare men off pretty easily because I'm too busy protecting myself from the jerks that the nice guys that I'd like a shot with don't know what to make of me. This book has taught me how to let my guard down and stop being that tough cookie. I'm not even done with it (about 1/4 of it still left to read) and all I can say is Laura Doyle really hits the bullseye with this one. If you ever wondered why men haven't been approaching you or asking you out, read this. I promise, that will change. It already has for me, and I've only been reading the book for a week!

I would also suggest "Romeo's Playbook" because it looks and reads like a sports book, my husband loves it. But not only does it have romantic ideas, it also has lots of easy to follow advice about why women do and act the way they do. Now my husband gets it.

After reading this book I feel disappointed! I expected more! But, just like men, this book is a huge let down! It reads like Seventeen Magazine and reminds me of those cheesy jr high books like, "How to meet Boys" ( hang out where he plays sports) and "How to be a great kisser".(practice on your hand!)
Too cheesy, not funny and a waste. Then again if you are 17, go for it!

A guy comes clean and tells us girls why men behave the way they do. Why they take your number and wait 2 weeks to call, stuff like that.
The best thing is that it clears up a lot of misunderstanding between the sexes and gives clear instructions on how to make your guy genuinely happy in your relationship - which is good for everyone. it also helps weed out the self-centred losers.
I read with horror as he described perfectly a couple of exes of mine that, in his opinion, would never make good partner material and were a complete waste of my time to bother trying to have a relationship with.
Definitely worth the money!

Okay, I will say upfront that I jumped back into the dating pool after 30 years and I am looking for ways to understand the male psyche. I think the author does have a good grasp of the way that most men's minds work. Being a child of the 60's, however, I was totally turned off by the emphasis on getting men to spend money on you - and even just manipulating male friends to spend their money on you. I have no problem with paying my own way; I was looking for information on how to understand a man's perception/behavior better so that I could meet him in the middle. If you can ignore the emphasis on manipulation for greed and the lack of editing, you will learn plenty about the male mind.

I absolutely loved it!

What a traitor this author must be. Reading this I felt like I was in the guy's locker room alone with a turn coat. The language is a bit raw at times, but not obscene. It's like having an older brother warning you about stuff guys do, and showing you how they think and how to make them get all stupid over you. It was brutally honest. Of course I had to try everything out for myself, and to no surprise, these things worked. Guys for the most part are a lot easier than they let on. A wink and a smile can get you far without having to do anything you feel uncomfortable doing.

Some of what you read here may not sound like it can work, but I have had a lot of fun playing with the advice here, and as long as it works, I am happy to have hot guys doing nice things for me for a change.

This is a wonderful book. I was very leery of the whole TV show, Match in Manhattan, when I heard a woman say she had to have a man with a networth of 8 million dollars! I thought it would be just another reality TV show. Imagine my surprise when I caught an afternoon of it and realized what kind of show it was.

Matt's firm policy of not canceling a date via text and how he handled that situation impressed me. The book caught my eye and after reading a third of it in the store I decided to purchase it.

I came home & read it in one afternoon. It has excellent insight into the male mind, full of humor, and great tips. I'm not sure that I could be a BOND GIRL but it sounds like fun!!! And I'm looking at my bedroom in a whole new light.... it's not a love shack yet. LOL

A male friend told me that he ended things with a girl after seeing her self-help books. I just laughed and told him what Matt suggest. It's a good read.

This book did nothing for me. Out of the 1,500 pickup lines in here, about five at best were even practical. I've read a lot about pickup in the past few months, and almost every single line in this book is self defeating. If you want to gamble on your "game," or whether or not you have a hand imprint on your face after the interaction, buy this book. If you're looking for a strategy to set yourself apart from the other douche bags out there hitting on gorgeous women, this book will not help you.

Yes,there is finally a real book on pick-up lines. The author did his research. Its about time someone wrote a book on pick-up lines and how, when, where and why to use them. This book covers the lot.

The book is divided up into various sections showing which pick-up line suits each situation. Not many corny jokes in this book so you're not likely to get slapped across the face or kneed in the groin.

This is the book every guy should have.If you want to improve your chances with women then this book is going to be help you meet and pick-up women. As for the price the book is good value. It definitely a quality book not one of those books written by some idiot trying to cash in on singles. If you are going to buy a book purely on pick-up lines buy this book. Its the only one you need.

Add this book to your collection of "How to pick-up women" type books and you will be a winner.

I have read many books on similar subject matter. However, this one sort of wakes up the reality. Engagement is the bridge between singlehood and wife. There are lots of emotions and expectations flying, and it can be incredibly overwhelming. This book is a lovely "calm down". I also like that it's focus is on your feelings about "marriage" verses the wedding. The wedding lasts a night, the marriage hopefully lasts the rest of your lives!.

Looking at another side to the wedding process

As an engagement gift a girl who I used to work with sent me two books about the wedding process. One of which was "The Conscious Bride." At first glance I threw it aside thinking that it would be about etiquette and how to treat my guests right (which I am honestly sick of hearing about because in trying to be a good bride I am sacrificing what I want out of the day). Then one day when I was bored at my fiance's I started to read the book and realized that it was actually about being conscious of all the emotionally changes and realizations we go through during the planning process, the actual day of the wedding, and immediate time afterwards. The book basically talks about validating your feelings and while it doesn't exactly give specific advice, it does say things like "you need to talk about your feelings with your friends, mother, father, FH, etc." so that they don't blow up and cause more problems that some women have said they regret for years.

I think we get so wrapped up in getting the right vendors for the right costs that we all get overwhelmed and it causes us to be emotional wrecks. Multiple women talk about how they cry a lot, don't feel supported etc. and after reading some of this book and exploring my own feelings about my upcoming wedding I realized that while we get pots, towels, lingerie, and magazines on how to plan the aesthetically perfect wedding from others, I think what we really need is a place to come to explore our opinions and emotions about marriage as a whole. "What do you think about changing your name?" "How do you feel about moving in with with your fiance/husband?" etc.

That being said, I'm a very introspective person, but since I have been too busy to think about myself at all over the last 4 1/2 months, I think this book has really helped me work through much of my confusion, frustration, doubts, etc. and made me feel so much better about my relationship with my fiance.

I've read some of the other reviews and have seen people say that they feel the book is dated, feminist, sexist, and a bunch of other things. But I think what this book is really meant to do is prompt brides to think about their emotions concerning getting married and no matter what your age (they do address many different life situations) is I think you can find something in here that is helpful.

Disappointing

I think the intent of this book is great. The wedding planning process, as well as transitioning into married life, is incredibly stressful and no one really talks about it. However, I found I could not relate to the whole psychoanalytical approach used in the book. I kept thinking, "Well, maybe the next section will be helpful." But it never was! Perhaps because of my age (39), I've already done more introspection than most brides and did not need validation that I'm not "crazy," because of all the insanity surrounding the process. Some of the quotes from other brides were interesting, but the book was just too "out there" to be useful, at least for me.

I found this book thought-provoking and helpful! I picked it out because I was hoping to get some clues as to how to deal with the stress of my engagement, but while reading it I found myself sinking further into introspection, which was actually really good. This book doesn't necessarily have answers, but it makes you ask yourself questions that you may not otherwise have asked. I plan to read it again, just to see what I discover the second time through!

On Being Present...

This book is about being present to the transition of going from singlehood to couplehood, on leaving the girl behind and stepping into the next phase in life...we are so much more than just "wife" - but this book explores the psychological transformation of one of the most important times of our life - like a changing of the seasons.

I highly recommend this book for every bride. Educating myself and being present to the inner changes of our psyche has helped me navigate through this time - and appreciate everything that occurs as divine order.

The person I gifted the Lou Paget's book to was very happy to receive it. She said the book is written with brilliance and is highly effective for anyone who reads it. My friend would know because she is a professional book editor.
