Breaking Up Or Getting Engaged?Review Date: 2001-01-01
Anyone who has ever read a Dave Barry article can appreciate his incredibly dry wit and hilarious sense of humor. Barry always seems to capture subjects that are serious, but manages to put a funny twist on them. Not only does he nail the concept of marriage AND/OR sex in this book, but the illustrations by Jerry O'Brien are the perfect compliment. The outrageous diagrams on "How to French Kiss" remind me of my life just last week, er, I mean high school.
This book is loaded with helpful tips for both men and women. For instance, Barry feels that the best bet for a new bride on how to get along with her mother-in-law is drugs. If only more people could read this book!
This book has something in it for everyone. If you are about to get married, the chapter entitled "How to Have a Perfect Wedding No Matter What" will definately come in handy. Of course, those of you already married, chapters "How to Argue Like a Veteran Married Couple" and "Children: Big Mistake or Bad Idea?" will, most definately, be of interest.
Barry's book is a fairly quick read, and would make a nice addition to anyone's book collection, if not for the mere fact that it is a great conversation piece. Any fan of Dave Barry will love it, and if you live on another planet, and have never heard of him, this is a great book to start with. You can't help but laugh!

From being single, relationships, breakups and mourning, Brownsey covers it all. Need help identifying the dreaded lesbian bed death? Not sure if it's lust or love? Considering multiple partner relationships? Mo supplies the answers along with tongue-in-cheek comedy that will keep you howling with laughter no matter where you are concerning gay-gal relationships. I admit to suffering from STD myself (Sexually Transmitted Denial). For gals like me who find themselves in the midst of redefining their sexuality, and refuse to take the whole dating thing too seriously, Mo Brownsey's book is the definitive answer for the basics of gay-gal dating. Her comedic approach to relationships, breakups, recovery and sex is an indispensable guide for those new to this lifestyle as well as gay-gals who've always know that they weren't straight but love a good laugh. Indeed, straight or lesbian, all women will find themselves in this remarkably astute book. IS IT A DATE OR JUST COFFEE earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.

A Side Dish of LaughsReview Date: 2007-03-26
Mo Brownsey, long time comedian and lesbian studies college professor writes a humor filled book, packed with information lesbian and bisexual women really need. Speaking from vast experience, she starts right out with sage `after-breakup' advice: Take her number off the speed dial! Then deftly covers: baby dykes (yes, they're too young for you), on-line dating (why it frequently doesn't work), the L-word (love), polyamory (not for Mo) and a host of other topics.
Brownsey is the kind of friend who'd not only grab you by the lapels and exclaim, "Snap out of it!" But she'd explain how over pizza until you felt better. If don't have a friend like that, get this book.

It's a unique sort of mission, which makes for an enjoyable read. The author, Jennifer, obviously enjoyed herself and did some soul-searching as well as soul-mate searching.
This chick lit-cum-travel log will please those who like some romance in their travel stories and some travel in their romance!

A+ for bravery and positive thinkingReview Date: 2006-06-26
As others have pointed out, she doesn't date outside her race, barring a mixed Thai-Italian man. This beautiful man is actually a model, but no sparks fly.
Everyone is entitled to their tastes, but this racial restriction seems a bit staid, and amazing for a traveler. Guess her network of Date Wranglers was somewhat restricted in who they recommended to her, consciously or unconsciously?
Among her Caucasian dates, she actually meets Mr. Right. After agonizing about what to do, she decides to continue her journey, and then appears to meet a second Mr. Right, a wonderful American pilot working in New Zealand.
While this causes Cox emotional consternation, it fascinated me as a reader. TWO Mr. Rights in the space of fewer than 80 dates? This needs to be announced to every workaholic woman discouraged by her dating scene.
Cox seems to be a one-woman demography and mating experiment, demonstrating that the very real man shortage for women in their 30s and older in Western cities can be foiled by determination, a sense of adventure, a winning personality, and the willingness to expand one's horizons. Even women without the budget to date men on four continents can take a page from Cox's book to find love on less costly or extensive adventures.
Would especially recommend this book as about 10 times better than the comparable "The Year of Yes" (the author similarly takes control of her dating situation by being positive, and with a good result, but oh the drecky guys she wastes time with on the way) and "My 1,000 Americans: A year-long odyssey through the personals," which is far more depressing as author Rochelle Morton meets loads of narcissistic and married men. I suppose the lesson here is that Cox was wise to rely on her date wranglers, while Morton did far worse using the personal ads.
I'm sure Cox could have found a Londoner as Mr. Right -- had they met each other traveling! A relationship counselor told me once that romance and passion require time, which no one in a demanding job has. Hence the link between travel and romance.
Dating Inspiration...Review Date: 2006-05-11
In this poignant, witty, exposed memoir, Jennifer Cox attempts to answer these questions for herself. At 38, still single, a trail of failed relationships looming behind her, this editor and PR manager for Lonely Planet decides to set out from her native London on a round-the-world voyage to locate Mr. RIght. Through the help of internet searches and her "Date Wranglers" she manages to create an 80-date itinerary that spans 6 months and 18 countries.
If you believe in love, fate, following your heart, and braving monsoons, food poisoning, weeks in the desert in order to find what you've always been looking for, this is the book for you!
Singles and not-so-singles alike will revel in Cox's hilarious, plucky, first-person account of her international dateline trials and tribulations. Will she find true love? Will she come up empty, aside from a lot of frequent flyer miles?
Read this engaging, inspiring, page-turner to find out!

Okay advice... for getting into relationshipsReview Date: 2007-01-10
For example, instead of asking the women in the first question, "How do you like to be approached?", he writes: "What can a man say to you to make you feel good?" Get it? When he asks he's already telling her "something to make you feel good", so of course the woman will reply something like "I want a compliment", "tell me I'm beautiful", etc.
Of course, I don't mean this is bad advice. As a matter of fact, how to beat the fear of rejection and how to read women bodylanguage sections are worth the price of the book alone. However, it lacks organization, and only helps with the "how to approach" dynamic, not what to do next. Also, the author doesn't want you to express sexuality, and doesn't encourage you to look for women who want to get laid. He suggests that you find out about their ex boyfriends and mirror the qualities they had. I don't agree with this advice, although it can work.
As a conclusion, the book has good advice about encouraging guys to go out there and meet many women, to have no fear of approaching hot girls, and get into relationships with them, not sex. But misses the "how to" get physical aspect with them. If you want to learn about body language and how to compliment effectively, then tis is a "ok" buy, nothing more.
If you are not looking for relationships, I suggest the book "The System: How To Get Laid Today" by Roy Valentine, with a step by step procedure without page-filler fluff, and "Undercover Sex Signals" by Leil Lowndes, a gem for understanding the dialect of body language. You can't miss with those.

A 5-Star read for teens, young adults and their parentsReview Date: 2007-08-20
Author Brienne Murk of the popular music group "Myrrh" has developed a youth seminar based on living one's faith in the real world. She and her sister, Heather, are frequent speakers at camps, conventions, churches, and youth events. Now in her 20s, Brienne relates to the challenges facing today's teens, offering them hope and help.
In Eyes Wide Open, Murk encourages teens to decide in favor of "emotional purity" by setting boundaries and carefully guarding their hearts. An entire chapter is devoted to the dangers of internet chat rooms, IM'ing, e-mail and other ways that a `virtual relationship' can develop. Such settings encourage anonymity, artificial identities and danger.
The book is crammed with real-life examples of emotional entanglements, heartache, and broken relationships that flow from a shallow, unguarded approach to life. Author Murk encourages the reader to set boundaries, put goals in writing, and find mentors who will keep her or him accountable and within the limits.
Filled with scripture references, the book reveals God's good design for human sexuality, and reminds us of Biblical examples of both success and failure, from whom we can learn. Using the tools and concepts expressed in this book, a teen or college student can face the world of dating and relationships with confidence and "eyes wide open."
"True purity is more than sexual abstinence - it's a commitment, a promise, and a choice to guard your heart."
Armchair Interviews says: Well-written, timely, and encouraging.
Protection and Wisdom for Today's TeensReview Date: 2007-08-18
Author Brienne Murk tells us there's another danger, too. Chatting on-line, sending instant messages, meeting over the internet -- teens and others can get unwisely involved at an emotional level, even if they maintain a distance and live out a decision of sexual purity.
Purity is more than sexual abstinence, Murk argues. Using Scripture and many examples from real life, Brienne Murk (recording artist and member of "Myrrh") shows that purity is not just physical: it is mental, emotional and spiritual too. Teens and college students should be "saving themselves" in ways that are more than just physical.
Well-written, timely, filled with protection and wisdom for today's teens. A great book to read together as a youth group, interacting about the key concepts and ideas here.

This book is a valuable tool for me, personally and for my sixteen year marriage/partnership. I'm finding new ways to really listen, communicate, to set boundaries, to clarify perceptions, to honor my feelings and to play.
Fearless Loving also offers an insightful and helpful protocol for people who are interested in a new way to date. I highly recommend this book to my friends and anyone interested in Love.
