Growing up in Irving, TX., home of the Texas Stadium, I was hooked as a Cowboys fan at a young age. My three most vivid childhood memories:

Super Bowl XXVII
The Thanksgiving Snow Game (Which I am told I cried about all day)
Super Bowl XXVIII

What I didn't, and couldn't, grasp at a young age (5 for XXVII) was the greatness of the team, or really understand the intricacies of the seasons.

But here it all is. In one extremely well written and enjoyable book. Sure some of the players and coaches come off like huge pricks within the book at times, but there is also wonderful stories of team bonding and triumph.

If you are a fan of the Cowboys (a real fan, not a frontrunner who just became a fan within the last year) you HAVE to have this book.

A few things from the book (just a glimpse, there is much more):
-Michael Irvin stabbed a teammate with a pair of scissors
-Barry Switzer heard his mom commit suicide and feels responsible for it
-Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones are pricks

O, and, Charles Haley... Well you will just have to get the book for all the stuff about Haley.

My Favorite Book. Ever. Already.

Hard to put down

Like was said in another review, "Boys Will Be Boys" grabs you with the very first chapter. When a non-fiction sports book starts out with any sort of altercation between teammates, much less a stabbing, you know youre in for a ride. Although i disagree that its similar to "Ball Four"(much more candid, totally ahead of its time) the on the field commentary along with the ridiculous antics off the field keep you interested from start to finish. A deffinite read for any diehard Cowboys fan, football fan, and sports fan(above the age of 17). Also, GRRRREEEAAATTTT to read that Skip Bayless was just as level headed then as he is now. You could tell him Barry Sanders was the greatest runner of all-time and he'll try to convince you that it was only because Bo Jackson decided to play baseball. Absolute worst writer I have come across

Jeff Pearlman is on top of his game in his gossipy new book "Boys Will Be Boys." It is a mud-raking expose of the moral and ethical squalor of Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys. Using a playbook filled with XXX's and OhOhOh's, "America's Team" played on a field having goal lines of coke and hash marks of... well, hash.
The fantastically talent-laden Dallas Cowboys of the 90's had few competitive rivals on and off the field. Their professional football successes included winning seasons, playoff victories and Super Bowl championships. With equal aplomb though, they are depicted as nihilistic debauchery-laden hedonists due to their post and pre game exploits. For example the team's suburban retreat, apropos the "White House," would have made Bill Clinton blush and the Marquis de Sade proud. In many ways, their antics were a reflection of a society - if that society was from Sodom and Gemorah.
The personal dramas and unfulfilled potential of the Dallas Cowboys casts a sad pale on professional athletics. Rather than a Greek tragedy, the Cowboys were more like a Trojan Horse. Their gift to America was their precision and grace on the Grid-Iron. But it was a fake ideal, achieved through a morally bankrupt and ethically corrupt perversion of the American Dream.

no thanks...

i usually like to read a football book this time of year when the NFL returns. the author recounts tale after tale of the 1990s cowboys' off-field antics. once you've heard the first story, you've heard them all. they get very redundant. did you know a lot of the cowboy players used drugs and were unfaithful to their wives? did you know jerry jones and jimmy johnson didn't really get along? did you know barry switzer was an incompetent coach? i've read books on the 90s cowboys before and there's nothing really new here. i'm sure this book will sell a lot of copies. i, for one, was disappointed.

My grandfather bought this book for my 13 month old and my son absolutely loves it. I read it 5-10 times every chance he can get it on my lap. He gets really excited the closer I get to the back page. He loves seeing himself and then freaks out with joy! BUY THIS book... they love the holes in the pages, the colors and the repetition of the story.

I bought this for my daughter at 18 mos based on the reviews. She loves books. This was an instant favorite. From the moment she picks it up she is smiling in anticipation of what is to come. She is now turning 2 this month and still it is her favorite book. She likes to fill in the blank for you when you read it to her. Peek-a...WHO, Peek-a...ZOO!, Peek-a...CHOO-CHOO! etc. This is really a cute book with great illustrations that my daughter likes to point to and discuss. It flows really well and the ending is just perfect, she bursts into laughter EVERY time. Well worth the money, you have to get this for your little one.

What if technology failed? Who would be ready to survive? I don't know of many that would be able to take care of themselves, never mind their family. This book tells you what you need to do to live successfully if that time came.
Truth be told, we have forgotten how to live without. How to survive on our own. Who would you ask if that time came? This book gives basics from the very beginning. A "how to" for anything you might need to know.
This could be a valuable resource for everyone. Something to have on hand. Who knows what will be in store for us in the future. This is a comprehensive disaster tool with valuable reference material.
There is plenty of "good stuff" to take out of this book. Even if you just want to just get back to a few basics in your every day life. A good one to have in your library.

This manual guides one toward survival, when technology fails.....and it will, it's only a matter of time now. It has already begun. Most people cannot hunt, grow food, or recognize anything growing in the wild that would help them survive, if they needed to.
The United States is nearing full circle in it's ablility to sustain this government, it could have survived, but it won't. There will be CHAOS in the streets, and all around us will begin the drive to survive here without gasoline, food markets, and the clothing industries.
Better get back to learning the basics, time is drawing near.

I've been a Dick Francis reader for many years. I felt this book recycled lots of past devices used in better ways in past books. The young widower whose wife died due to a complication of pregnancy, the "frightener" are two that come immediately to mind. I've been buying the books as soon as they came out in hardcover, but I think I'll wait for paperback or visit the library for future volumes.

Another well written and researched book by Dick Francis. A good look into the judicial system of Great Britain, hence the name. Somehow I missed this novel when it was first published so I had the pleasure of reading two in a row, as I just finished "Under Orders."

Since Felix Francis has opted to extend the family franchise of racing mysteries, he has clearly done an excellent job of analyzing his father's work. He has then developed a formula to assure that all the elements are in the book, and then does the boring part: he writes it.

This book lacks the fun, the originality, the plot twists, that made Dick Francis a fascinating writer. True, to an American audience the "Silks" conflation is another piece of interesting anglophilia, but this story has been written before: entertainingly by Francis I, less so by Francis II. I suspect that I will not buy the third father and son collaboration.

I bought this for my son and he's carried it with him to and from school for nearly a month. He won't be parted with it, and any book that interests my kid that much has GOT to be good. The book is filled with fun projects, and is not just a father/son book (although my husband does read it with him), but also a brother/brother book, or a fun book on its own. I will probably purchase this book for my son's friends when their birthdays come up. I know there's nothing worse than receiving a book for your birthday when you're eleven years old, but in this case, I think an exception can be made.

After reading many books of this kind and looking specifically for books with a strong scientific support, I can say that this is a wonderful book in terms of images and editing, but not a good reference if one is looking for the best exercises and methodologies. Scientific evidence proves that the exercises described here are not the best choice, some of them might even be dangerous if one is not careful enough, and moreover, the muscolar districts involved in the exercise are not those that are highlighted.

Books is the BEST I have ever seen on showing muscles for each exercise. Hands down winner. All my workout partners use it often to review our exercises.

But we also found a book that has the workouts planned out in simple charts. Has the weights, # of reps and everything. AND THEY WORK. I have lost over 12 lbs of fat in 3 months and spend less time in the Gym.

The books.
Weight Training Workouts that Work by James Orvis.

I chanced upon this book a year back in BJs and happen to grab it. I still think it was one of the best buys. The book has got one of the best illustrations on strength training anatomy. The book is divided into various sections with a set of excercises to develop strength in specific areas of anatomy. The text along with the illustrations are also very good and helpful. They also have specific dicussions on wears and tears in different muscles due to specific excercises.

I have followed the book and have been successful in toning my body. When my brother in law, who is a fitness enthusiast and a practicing doctor, visited me from Oman, he too liked the book and we ordered a copy for him through Amazon. Fully satisfied and will recommend this book to any fitness enthusiast, of any level.

There is a women's version of this book. Its a good book too but I think this book covers both the sexes pretty well.

Mountain climbing has always had a last frontier quality. The race to the North and South Poles ended in the early 1900's, Africa and South America were explored by the 1930's, leaving the Himalayan Mountains as the last challenge for adventure. Mr. Isserman and Mr. Weaver has written a comprehensive history of the conquests of the world's highest peaks. Starting from the competitive nationalist expeditions of this century to the solo attempts of today, the book is clearly written and well-researched, with over 100 pages of documentation and notes. The reader can read as a follow-up Maurice Herzog's "Annapurna" (1952), an epic tale of the French harrowing attempt to be the first to conquest a Himalayan peak.

And librarians and the kids they share it with will love this book. The detailed pictures beg for young readers to take a closer look. Baby bats wear swimmies on their arms. A water fountain is turned into a great splashing pool. Characters from books kids know and love make frequent appearances, and the library setting reminds us of the venerable institutions we all remember, or at least wish we'd grown up with. This librarian says the book is not to be missed and I'm off to order my copy now.

Unique Library Themed Characters

Review Date: 2008-09-25
I work in a public library so am always interested in stories set in libraries. There's hundreds of children's picture books doing just that but Brian Lies has come up with an original idea of having bats as his main characters. Well actually its not original characters in the fact that this is a sequel to his very successful Bats at the Beach but original in the bats/library combination.

Anyway the basic plot is a librarian has left a window open and the call goes out into the night that there is access to the library. Apparently bats have been waiting on edge for something like this to happen. A window left open is a rare event and these bats will not hesitate to take up this opportunity. Inside the library the bats use the overhead projector to make shadow puppets (you'd think they could do this with a full moon outside all the time but who knows), read the books and use their imagination to act out scenes from them.

Not the most interesting of storylines but the pictures are very well drawn. One bat is wearing a lifejacket which is never explained though.
For those who are big fans of bats, I'd check this out.

The best three books I've come across that are set in a library are Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians by Jackie Hopkins, Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen and Library Mouse by Daniel Kirk.

An exceptional book

Children enjoy seeing references to their favorite books in this book, and then THIS book becomes a new favorite to be enjoyed over and over again. The illustrations are particularly wonderful, reminiscent of those of Garth Williams in terms of cuteness. They are just as appealing as his, yet more realistic since they are executed as full color paintings.
This book is a worthy companion to Bats at the Beach, and even more clever.
