Everyone's been buzzing about Hatsumi sensei's new book, which focuses on ryuha, and it's been worth the wait. Like many other reviewers have posted, it's hardly a training manual, but rather a list of kata. It's a great way of keeping things straight for your personal training notes, but will not be helpful without personal instruction. It's definately meant for someone who's been training ninpo for a while, but don't let that stop you from getting it.

Like the other Kodansha books I've reviewed, fantastic photos and artwork, although some sketchy translations. Overall, a great read.

This book is amazing! You need it.

This book is amazing. If you are a member of the Bujinkan or any student of real martial arts, you need this book. You will stare and ponder for hours.

This is a Densho

Review Date: 2008-08-08
A Densho is a japanese scroll detailing the techniques of a ryu (school) of martial arts. As such, this book has a lot of words and pictures but without the knowledge and training to put it all together, it probably won't make any sense to you. Bujinkan members will appreciate this book. Don't expect it to be a how to type of book, it's more of a list of techniques for each of the 9 ryus with a basic description and several pictures and anecdotes from Soke Hatsumi. That said, I love this book, there are so many little things about it that keep me thinking late at night like why did he put a picture by Salvador Dali on page 38. Excellent Book! I bought two copies so I can ruin one reading it over and over and keep one on the shelf.

Save your cash for training

This book will be absolutely USELESS to most, and UNNECESSARY for the rest. Indeed the kata of several schools of the Bujinkan are listed, but the lists are strictly verbal, no photos to help decipher the text. Futhermore, the verbal text is likely meaningless or confusing unless one is already familiar with the kata/lesson being addressed. Regarding the other sections of the book, Hatsumi-sensei tends to write in a rather cryptic way and one will likely have difficulty coaxing much out of the statements unless one is already rather well versed in the context. So, in a nutshell, if one does not already have a strong understanding of the material presented this book will be more of a hinderence than a help. If on the other hand, one is already well versed in the material then one will probably not be looking to a book for answers. And so, unless you are a collector of all things Hatsumi-sensei (the book does have some pretty photos after all), no need to buy this book. Spend your money instead on an extra training session or a daikomyosai video.

If you've ever met Hatsumi Sensei face to face, and even just exchanged a few short words, you can just feel something amazing about the man. This book is a must for anyone's martial arts library.

interesting story, very detailed information

Review Date: 2008-10-06
This book was a big hit and because of the hero story content (little, unlikely guy wins) it is endearing. Though a bit strangely written, lacking in prosaic talent and somewhat dry at times, there are moments of humour and the details are extensive. It could have been condensed, but the heart of the story leaves a lasting impression.

I was really looking forward to reading the book, Crazy Good but I just finished it and was disappointed. Oh, not in Dan Patch-a remarkable horse- but in the way the story was told. This is no Seabiscuit of a story. While it has a lot of stats it has much less heart. What I did get from the book was an insight into how cruel the world of racing is. Doping horses was as prevalent then as it is now and no matter how well a horse may be housed, ex-Barbaro, in the end it's all about the money.

I gave this book as a gift but have heard my 2 1/2 year old niece read it a lot. It is great story line, lots of repetition and rhyming. I will definitely get this book for my daughter when she is a bit older.

We originally checked this one out of the library, but we had to purchase it as it's a favorite repeat! What amazing artwork!!! Bold, beautiful, and totally engaging! The story is very funny, even to the youngest set. For my son, it's been a wonderful introduction to the concept of "thinking" and how to express and wonder about what someone else might be "thinking". It is definitely on our current "top 10" list of our all-time favorite books! Thank you for the duck at "The End" eying that tractor and scratching his chin... perhaps a sequel????

This happens to be my nephew's favorite book (and it's the third copy he's worn out). Duck on a Bike a delightful story about a dare-devil duck who sets off an bike riding adventure. On his journey around the farm, he greets other animas who in turn get jealous of his biking skills. In the end, all of the animals get a chance to join in on the fun!

As an elementary school teacher, I highly recommend this book for children of all ages. The story is engaging and the illustrations capture the joy of the story!

I borrowed this book from the library for my son and he instantly fell in love with it - as did I - and so I just had to buy it for him. We read it nearly every day and he smiles and laughs each time - and he's only 7 months. A beautiful story with gorgeous pictures and a very funny final page. Enjoy!

I'm riding an intelligent horse that, when exercises are repeated, quickly begins to anticipate. This book's creative, insightful, and well described exercises have provided me with new ways to work on developing his strength and flexibility with enough variety to keep us both interested. I leave it in the barn and pick a new exercise before each ride. Though my copy is still in great shape, I think it would be terrific if it was printed on coated (barn-proof) paper.

Very useful tool to have in every instructors library. There's a breif description on the benefits of each exercise and how to execute. Some of the exercises added another layer to the ones that I already use and I found this to be an added plus!

The Best So Far

Review Date: 2008-03-25
Brilliant diagrams, excellent keys, simply mapped out and laid out information for difficult and also the easiest of dressage manoevres. It's bound at the top for a vertical flip, with a hole punched down near the bottom so you can hang the book on a nail on your bulletin board or at home to study it and keep it open while you study it. It has handy hints how to achieve positions and gives you ideas to improve certain flaws. It is by far the best book on dressage I have read so far.

Just about EVERY page has another full A4 dressage arena on it showing the pattern where the horse is going, it shows crossbars and it shows trotting poles and where to place them, it shows where you should do a certain manoevre such as a flying change or shoulder-in with an excellent use of diagrams and patterns which have a key right next to it so the design remains uncluttered and simple to read. A best buy for anyone serious about dressage - or even jumping - to keep their horse supple and to keep their horse from boredom. Brilliant.

Dressage Exercises

Review Date: 2008-01-07
This book lists and illustrates a wide variety of exercises for the dressage horse and explains the value of each exercise. Good illustrations guide you through each exercise and they are logically grouped into lessons to improve specific aspects of the horse's development. However, this book is not for beginning riders. It does not explain the aids nor does it explain the movement, so if you don't already know shoulder-in, counter canter, etc. you will find this very frustrating and be forced to reference a book that does explain the application of the aids and movements. The format is too large to be of much use at the barn or ringside; it would have been more helpful to be half the size.

Lynne Twist challenges us to think about our culture of scarcity and "more is better" and the impact that has on our lives and our environment. She challenges us to evaluate the self-imposed value we place on money, the impact on our happiness and the power in using money in an intentional way to align with our values and life purpose. This book can be transformative if the reader approaches reading it with that possibility in mind. Highly recommended!

I am a beginning & intermediate horseback riding instructor in Moscow, ID. I have found the Pony Club Manual for beginners to be a very helpful teaching tool - the illustrations are helpful and well-labeled, and the layout is easy to follow. The information is widely accepted as correct, and the text is well-written for the 10-15 year old ages. I include a manual in the price of all my beginning horse camps for 10-14 year olds.

There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Susan Harris is not only a gifted artist ; drawing her explanations of concepts she is relating ; she draws pictures with her words, and for anyone lucky enough to attend one of her clinics , she draws explanations with body language. I am fortunate to have Sue as my friend and mentor for 30+ years & have told her often that "She could read the phone book to you & You'd never lose interest". She is also a gifted horsewoman & teacher. She posseses an ability to locate the crux of a lack of understanding & with empathy for both horse & rider guides them to a solution. If I had to limit my horse library to just a few books, her USPC manuels would be the first chosen. They are a wealth of information on all aspects of horsemanship , for every level of horseman , of any age. Her choice of words combined with her own illustrations gives very clear & interesting information.Sue stresses empathy for your horse & safety issues in every topic -2 basics to have ingrained in anyone who wishes to be around horses. I have recommended these books to all who share the "addiction" to horses with me.

I love this book!

It's not just one story, but it's many different stories of all the people who decide to ride (or not ride) the roller coaster. The text is simple and fun to read out loud and aptly captures the liveliness of riding a roller coaster. The illustrations are masterful, rich with details and wonderfully expressive characters, but never overly crowded. Each viewing of this book will reward the reader with new surprises and new storylines.

Like the young protagonist in the story, I can't wait to ride this one again!

My 4 year old grandson loves roller coasters so I bought this book for him. Each night I read this book over and over - he never gets tired of it, it's his favorite book. We pretend he is on the roller coaster and I trace his finger over the loops, we start where the people get on and go up the hill very slow and then swoosh down and around, the upside down part is his favorite. This is a fun book with great illustrations.

I read this story to a kindergarten class who really enjoyed it. One little boy listened with his two arms up "roller coaster" style imitating the twists and turns and "Wheeeees" throughout the book. A lively discussion occurred about whether the little girl should go on the coaster for a second ride. The writer/illustrator captures the intensity of feelings that we've all experienced on a roller coaster.

Run, quick read. Great book for any cyclist. I could relate to some of his stratedgies as he was going thru the race and his feelings of praying for a mechanical. The book tends to jump around a bit, think "Lost style" flashbacks. This book will get passed on to some friends in my group ride for sure. One of the best cycling books I've read, still like Obree's book best though.

It'd help you to know something about bike race tactics before you read Krabbe's book. You think bike-racing's all about speed ? Think again. There's chess there as well, psychology, self-awareness. I admit it, at times I was perplexed by Krabbe's narrative. It's a terrific read though, leaves you limp and elated at the same time.

I really loved the book. It is for sure in my 10 best books ever list.

The book really manages to describe with precision what goes inside a rider's mind (and all the dilemas) during a race. The style is quite humurous and easy to read.

But do not forget that the book is literally rich and powerfull. There are some phrases on the book that kept me wake for a couple of nights...

But I am not sure if a non-racer entusiast will like it that much.
