A boy who is afraid of dogs meets a friendly long-haired barking fellow looking to play. He tells him to go away, but the dog insists on being friends. The dog instantly loves the boy, but the boy isn't so sure.

Your child will learn how dogs are fun to play with, and how some things aren't quite as scary as they might first appear.

The colorful, warm drawings have endured through the years, and will help bring a smile to your face.

I fully recommend "Go Away, Dog."

I have the original version (1963) and mine has the following inscription written by my mother:

"This was a library book I checked out for Lisa when she was 4 and 1/2 years old. She loved it so much she kept putting off taking it back and one day 'could never find it again'. Later, she told me she hid it and by then I had paid the library for it. Her most favorite book then and for a long time."

I cherish my copy of Go Away Dog and am buying the new version for good friend's baby shower.

Liz Neporent does a splendid job providing guidance for those new to weight training; the book describes strength training with weights from top to bottom. I especially think the emphasis on safety the book promotes is a worthwhile feature; weight training done wrong can be hazardous. I've been throwing barbells and dumbbells around for over 30 years, and I still picked up some good info from this title, mainly in the form of reminders. Even experienced fitness enthusiasts can get set in their ways; this book provides a good back-to-basics guide for seasoned jocks as well as an effective intro for those just getting started.

An excellent resource for complete beginners

This is the perfect book for someone who has never lifted weights before and is looking to start from the very beginning. It is never assumed that you know anything, which is perfect for the complete beginner. The book covers the most basic exercises for each muscle group, and provides basic information on these muscle groups, so that the beginner can become accustomed to putting together a basic program for the entire body. Once the beginner masters this, they will have all the building blocks needed to move on to more advanced programs, such as working on different groups on different days or doing supersets. If you are already familiar with the basics and are looking for more intermediate and advanced exercises and programs, try The Body Sculpting Bible for Women, Revised Edition: The Way to Physical Perfection (Body Sculpting Bible) or The Body Sculpting Bible for Men, Revised Edition: The Way to Physical Perfection (Body Sculpting Bible). However, if you are looking to start with the very basics - nothing wrong with that - then start with this one to get your basics down and your confidence up before moving on to the Body Sculpting series or other more advanced books.

Really, really basic

I did learn some useful technique tidbits from this book, and it has some amusing anecdotes, but this book is really for someone who is a true beginner. So I can only really recommend for those who have NO idea what is in a typical gym weightroom.

As much on compassion as on strength

Review Date: 2008-01-31
This book was scribed by a younger samurai who sat basically at the deathbed of the samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo. For seven years, the scribe sat and had conversations with Tsunetomo. Tsunetomo had become a monk after the death of his 'Master' in 1700. By 1716 the conversations ended, the result was a large manuscript. Hagakure is a compilation or thread of the most meaningful and 'best' of the manuscript.

The book is a mix of advice, stories, Buddhist teachings and koans, and direction on how to be the best samurai possible. As is more realistic and pure samurai teachings, this focuses less on swordplay than do most of the contemporary 20th and 21st century movies. The book is very much about loyalty--so much so that it is bound to conflict with modern and especially American views of independence, bootstrapping, etc.

Because it is written in small chunks without a specific plot or flow, I found the book to be great as a 'daily reader'. The author seems very calm, sane and without anger, and while I suspect no one would call him Enlightened, it reads without malice. From a Buddhist perspective, I had good luck replacing the word 'master' with 'compassion' and it worked almost seamlessly as a Buddhist reading meditation.

A very big disappointment

This is a great book however the problem lies with in ther traanslation. the problem is that only 300 of the 1300 phrases were translated. Although this translation gives the basic message that Master Tsunetomo was trying to get a cross you can not truly absorb thius book with out reading everything that Master Tsunetomo intended you to read. Also the entire 5th chapter is left out of this translation. I would recomend to everyone to find a better translation than this one.

I've been interested in Roger Federer since Wimbledon 2007. So I missed a lot of his career. This book just made my interest even bigger. It's a detailed written book about everything that roger has been through.

And you not only learn things about Roger, also about a lot of other tennisplayers he's playing against.

Wonderfull book!

More of a comprehensive collection of past interviews and accomplishments, as opposed to unique insights or details many Federer fans may look for. The book is well written, but as far as sports biographies are concerned, I found James Blake's bio as well as Lance Armstrong's more interesting.

The Roger Federer Story: Quest for Perfection is the real thing. Written by a real journalist about a real achiever. The author, Rene Stauffer, is a recognized figure in sports writing in Europe, and he is not at all embarassed to be smitten with Roger, as we all have been. But the biography is not gushy and it's not celebrity worship. Stauffer has done his own legwork and reveals the person behind the statistics and the worldwide recognition. Readers will not be surprised to learn that solid rearing by sensible parents and hard work on the court are the dominant factors in Federer's life. And of course now he must be a businessman, and we learn about that, too. This is a superior sports biography, at its core, good writing about a good person. You will read straight through and be glad you did.

Has Anyone Played Tennis Better?

The jury seems already to be in; this guy plays the game of tennis better than anyone! He has all the tools, plus the ingenuity to use them creatively and instinctly. Plus, he's a good guy.

Although at times this read was, as other reviewers have noted, to be just a sequence of scores of matches one after another. However, the author worked in the personal interest stuff and what was going on in the guy's life.

What was there from the outset was amazing potential, but his immaturity and temper preventing him from exposing his greatness too early. This was the revelatory part for me, that Roger was not always the dominant player he is now, but struggled.

I appreciate so much his temparement and his kindness. The last few chapters on such were well done and contributed much.

On another level, it has allowed me to show my teenage son exactly which muscles are being worked by which exercises. I like the author's emphasis on functional strength.

This is a handy booklet to keep in your flyfishing equipment. The leader info is excellent though I found the diapgrams to tie a few of the noes a little confusing. My major beef isthat it is described as a "streamside guide" it should then come with a waterproof case or something to protect the pages. I use a small ziplock bag to keep mine dry

accompanied by informative and excellently illustrated techniques
that can easily be learned by all those eager to follow and benefit from Randy's years of experience, both in the ring, and in the Octagon.
The illustrations are all in color - and should present no difficulty
for aspiring students of wrestling and the sport of mixed martial arts.
Randy explains the difference between freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling,
and explains how his Greco Roman wrestling background served advantageously in his Octagon bouts.

Randy Couture has been one of the poster boys for Mixed Martial Arts competition in recent years - and a good one at that. His words are well thought out, he's articulate, hard-working and talented. A lot is made of his age, as well. However, I don't think it means a great deal except to say he's an example of what hard work and good attitude can acheive.

Erich Krauss and Glen Cordoza do a great job of getting these qualities to shine through in this publication. The book's dedication speaks of work ethic and self-reliance, as well as the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and influences. One can only say that this is as much a recipe for success as any. It's worked in Couture's case, anyway.

The book is - like most Victory Belt publications - a large format book. It's 11" x 9" and has 214 pages. It's a glossy book on high quality paper. It's also generous with photos and the photos are detailed and clearly show the techniques presented. I was critical of a couple of Victory Belt's publications in the past for proof-reading. This one does a lot better. It is very unfortunate that one of the very few errors that slipped through happened to be in a very noticeable place. Nonetheless, the writing is excellent and gets better with each publication. I'd be a real jerk if I said it took away from the book.

As seems to be the Victory Belt template, the book opens with an introduction which spends twelve pages chronicling Randy's career. Erich and Glen are getting better at this every time. It's the best written of the Victory Belt intros by far and the one I enjoyed the most, as well. Take note, though, it may be that I simply enjoyed Couture's story more than the others.

The technical portion of the book is broken up into three parts. The first talks wrestling, the second focusses on Greco-Roman wrestling and the third on adapting the wrestling game for Mixed Martial Arts. Each part is broken up into six to seven chapters concentrating on different aspects of Randy's game. As far as the techniques go, this is clearly the game of Randy Couture. The book also shares a lot of information with his earlier video series from Century. That makes this a great adjunct to the series, as well.

The wrestling section starts with a comprehensive chapter discussing wrestling basics. This is followed by a look at four basic takedowns. This is followed (quite naturally) by a chapter on finishing the single leg. Clearly this is and area Randy considers key. Following this is a long section on tie-ups. Here, you really start to make the connection between the Randy you see in the cage and the one n the book. There are two defensive chapters in the wrestling section - Sprawling and Defending the Single Leg.

The section on Greco is shorter, with a two page introduction followed by a chapter on pummelling and then basic takedowns. I enjoyed this section a lot as I picked up several of details that (as a Jiu Jitsu guy) I didn't know before. There are then chapters on armdrags and on more advanced takedowns. All are effective techniques, well photographed and captioned.

The last part of the book is called "Wrestling for Fighting" and is obviously the crux of the book as far as the authors are concerned. It starts with an introduction (as for all the book's parts) and then jumps into the relationship between strikes (especially the overhand) and the double-leg takedown. There is then a chapter on closing the distance. Following this, come the chapters on the most famous parts of Randy's game - The clinch and cage tactics.

The clinch chapter concentrates on Couture's much hallowed "Dirty Boxing" technique while the chapter on cage tactics provides invaluable pearls on how to use the fence to your advantage. I'm not sure Randy has given up all his secrets here, but the book certainly describes much of what I've seen the man do in the cage.

From here, there are chapters on ground tactics and submissions. The tactics here are simple. There is a good deal of time devoted to "Ground 'n' Pound" and two basic choke submissions. Both should be a big help for wrestlers looking to make the change.

All-in-all, I think there's something in here for everyone. Wrestlers making the jump to MMA will obviously benefit the most as it shows precisely how the wrestler's game translates. People like myself, who don't have a strong wrestling background will be able to add elements to their game they had previously not been exposed to. And, I don't think there's out there who couldn't benefit from the clinch and cage tactics chapters.

The book brings the good points of all Victory Belt's previous publications together. It's shorter, more basic and easier to navigate than the already excellent 'Book of Knowledge' from BJ Penn and more articulate and mature than 'Mastering the Rubber Guard'. This one takes pride of place on my bookshelf and will join the Best of the Best category on this site.

As a firearms trainer, I regularly evaluate how I conduct my training. The book was thought provoking and provided some good information. It's not technique driven as most books are but rather tunes in on the underlying philosophies that influence how training is conducted.

You may not agree with all his ideas, but I think anyone in the force continuum training field will find themselves having to critically evaluate what they do after reading it.

Had bought this thinking it would be a good read and provide insight into training aspects for my martial arts. Feel asleep reading the second chapter. I have no idea why all these people rank it five stars as I found it not only boring, but repetitive and useless. There's even a disclaimer in the book stating that it's repetitive!
I think I read too much into the title for this book and, not being a part of the military, found it lacking.

Heavy on theory, short on practical advice

Review Date: 2008-07-12
I bought this book thinking that it would provide useful tips to improve a martial arts training regimen. I was sorely disappointed. Most of the book deals with theory and background, with very little useful info for a martial artist. The only really good piece of info I found in this book is that your fine and complex motor skills degrade as your heart rate increases (such as when you are scared and fighting for your life). There was one chapter on firearms training for urban combat, but that would be more useful to a police tactical team or a military unit rather than a martial artist. A psychology major might find this book interesting reading, but for help on martial arts training, better books would be "Fighter's Fact Book" by Christensen, "Get Tough" by Fairbairn, or "Complete Krav Maga" by Levine and Whitman.
