This was a basic overview. I read more about shelter and basic survival than exact techniques on evasion. I guess they do go hand in hand but I thought this was going to be a little different.
It was easy to follow though and very understandable for being in my opinion so basic.

I can't say I'm planning on running away into the wilderness, but I definitely think that if you are, this is the book. It's a good read whether you're planning on running off, or just reading a good book about survival.

Anyone interested in the outdoors should read this book. Lots of useful information. I am an avid hiker and tracker and have read many books on these subjects as well as backcountry medicine and this book had many things which i had not even considered. Good read!

I have to confess to being a fan of the author Michael Chesbro. His books offer lots of practical information, and "Wilderness Evasion" is no exception. The ability to stay out of sight in remote and wilderness areas has its place even today. Wilderness Evasion teaches you how to avoid being tracked, how to build low-key shelters, how to avoid dogs, find food, and generally 'stay lost' when you want to.
I am not a big outdoorsman, but I do like to take weekend backpacking trips, and this book has taught me how to avoid and evade the two-legged predators one sometimes meets in remote and out-of-the-way place.

GREAT BOOK - Get It While You Can!

If you only read one, read this one. I have been out of motorcycling for 26 years, owned four in my earlier day. I wanted to tour then but never did. This time I am doing it. I wanted to start out right so this was the first book I read. Extremely informative. It covered just about everything I needed and more. If there is any negative maybe I could ask for more guidance on which motorcycle. However, as I found in researching motorcycles, there are just too many factors. You must know what kind of travel you'll do, set your requirements of the bike, do the research on the bikes, sit on all of them, ride if allowed, settle on the one for you, take a motorcycle saftey course, buy and have fun. Don't go too small or too big, it must fit you. Dr. Fraizer's book is good too.

A treasure for the motorcycle traveller!

For anyone seeking information about motorcycle travel, this is THE book to have! Dale does a great job of covering many aspects (dare I say All?) for traveling by motorcycle, and then some. Everything from weatherproof riding gear, GPS, suspension, campers, tents, seat cushions to suggestions for wiring new equipment into your bike can be found in this comprehensive guide. The book is loaded with full color photos. I've been riding a number of years now, and thought I'd kept up on the latest gear and travel info... until I read this book. I've learned a few things and found a few new gadgets to look into. Highly recommended for someone just beginning to travel my motorcycle, or the seasoned rider.

A good companion to this book would be:

I bought this updated version because I was so impressed with it after reading a copy of the previous version from the library. It is terrific! The author writes in a clear, converstational tone, gives specific advice and explains his rationale re: everything from what type of shoes to buy to short, simple, effective workout routines to complement walking. The book is designed to help you start slowly and increase walking time, then distance, over a 52-week period. It even has a schedule for those who are just beginning. There's a bit of good guidance on nutrition, too. Everything you need to know and do to get fit again, all in one book.

Almost no changes from 1st Edition, but still the best guide out there

This comprehensive, approachable guide to all things walking is conversational in tone and gives a wealth of information about walking without being dry. The focus here is on fitness and health, not weight loss per se, which is refreshing. My favorite quote from the book is: "In an ideal world... our greatest concern about our bodies would simply be wringing the most life out of them. We'd want the longest, healthiest, most energetic, active adventurous lives our bodies could offer."

I checked out the first edition of this book from the library and did a page-by page comparison to see what had changed. There are exactly the same number of pages as the first edition and only the title of one subchapter has changed. Some of the resources in back have been updated, but that info could be found for free with a google search. The introduction has been re-written and the author's bio on the back cover has been updated (he has since left Walking Magazine and has appeared in the movie Super Size Me). Other than these updates, there is almost NO change here from the first edition.

Bottom line: this book is the best comprehensive guide to walking for fitness and health, but no need to buy this one if you already have the first edition.

Great book for Gracie students!

As a student of Gracie jiu jitsu, I have read many of the books out there purporting to be complete guides. However, most simply pick and choose the favorite moves of the author or promote a specific BJJ system, such as X guard or Rubber Guard. While those are good and have their place, GRACIE JIU JITSU is the must have book for any student of the Gracie system. For those of you learning the real Gracie jiu jitsu, not sport brazilian jiu jitsu, you must have this book. This book works perfectly as a reference guide for the Gracie fundamentals and all self defense moves, along with the stand up game, which are needed to progress to blue belt. I have found this to be invaluable in studying and fine tuning my moves outside class. Thank you, Rorion Gracie for making this book happen with your father, Grand Master Helio. I look forward to a changed life as a result of Gracie jiu jitsu.

Rorion Gracie created the "Ultimate Fighting Championship"event in 1993. This no-holds-barred tournament pitted all the different martial arts styles and traditions against each other in free form combat of no rules and no time limits. This iconoclastic approach created a furor within the martial arts community and from this unique approach arose one particular martial arts as being superior to all the others. It was called 'Gracie Jiu-Jitsu'. This unique approach to the martial arts in all of the associated moves of both defense and offence are thoroughly illustrated with step-by-step photographs in "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu", a 275-page compendium of instruction that is enhanced with the inclusion of Grand Master Helio Gracie's life story, his teaching principles, and the 'Gracie Diet'. As thoroughly 'user friendly' as it is Informed and informative, "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" is strongly recommended for personal, academic, and community library Martial Arts reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

This book is not the tell all to those looking for indepth look at BJJ and technique. It is a great table book to have for all BJJ guys that want a slice of history. Gracie JJ was created and molded by Helio and his bro Carlos to be used as a self defense art. It has taken shape today into a whole new beast. As beautiful as the art has become...this book touches on the self defense aspect of BJJ. There is a ton of stand up defense and a few chapter on the basic Gracie JJ techniques we all know and love..arm bar, triangle etc. Buy this book if you are a true fan..plain and simple!

Focus on self defense and basics

Review Date: 2007-07-07
This book covers jiu jitsu fundamentals and self defense as good as any. For what it aims to do - preserve the simplicity of Helio's high leverage innovations - it is a fanstastic, if slightly pricey, book. There's answers to many questions that don't appear in daily jiu jitsu training. ("How do I use what I know to defend a knife attack?") It's also great for reminders - "What's the perfect posture to avoid a triangle?" - Helio demonstrates the correct way.

All this said, do buy the book for what it is, not what it isn't. It isn't a manual on modern innovations - there are better places to learn the X-guard, the De La Riva Guard, the Rubber Guard, and other no Gi techniques. The focus is on gi jiu jitsu fundamentals and self defense. For that, it succeeds greatly.

Had the book since it's release

The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.

Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries.

Get In The Game" partly baseball, partly business and partly psychology. Author Cal Ripken, Jr. draws on his vast baseball experience, his family background and business interests to illustrate eight elements of perseverance that make a difference: Right Values, A Strong Will To Succeed, Love What You Do, Preparation, Anticipation, Trusting Relationships, and The Courage of Your Convictions.

Throughout the book, Ripken includes similarities between his career and character and that of Lou Gehrig. As one who has admired Cal from afar, I greatly enjoyed this book. You will too.

This book helped me and it helped me help my eleven-year-old son.

One of the parents from my son's baseball team actually said to me last night at our end-of-season party that several games ago it was like a completely different boy began showing up to play. He said he could see my son now has baseball in his head. That's about when I started reading parts of this book to my son. I started taking him to the batting cages. We began really working toward his goals on the field and talking about his goals in life.

This book resounds with the values I've always carried in my heart but have not been able to live due to circumstances beyond my control. Reading it allowed me to see these values do actually work somewhere out there in this world and these values are what I want for my child.

This book provides extremely useful guidelines in dealing with situations we all eventually run into in our lives. While alluding to baseball related examples, it does not simply dwell solely on recounting Mr. Ripken's impressive baseball accomplishments or relate amusing/interesting anecdotes. Instead it gives thought-provoking insights into two all too fast-disappearing basic axioms in our country's psyche: "practice makes perfect," and "do unto others." I highly recommend this book for everyone, especially young people still in their formative years. In fact, it presents an excellent opportunity for parents to reconnect with their child(ren) by reading it aloud and together, with discussion centering on each of the eight elements as they are completed.

I started running consistantly about 1 1/2 yrs ago (37yrs old). I set a goal of running a 15k race which I did in about 1:20. I wanted to improve my time as well as attempt some longer runs so I read a few other books / magazines before buying this one. Most of the others I read seemed to be more geared to the "elite" runners which I am definetly not. I appreciate Tom's knowledge and his ability to help the novice as well as the experienced runner. I also like Tom's approach to overall fitness, recovery and avoiding injuries. I have had the book for a couple of months and I have improved my time slightly but the greatest benefit for me has been helping me run further (I ran my first 14miler averaging 9min miles - which I am happy with) This is a great book for someone wanting to go to the next level.

I originally got turned onto Tom Holland at his Nantucket Beach Boot Camp. I really liked his style. During the hour long session he gives great advice in an easy going manner. His workouts are tough, but they are full of variety and full of fun.
I sat down with this book, expecting it to be like a text book- tons of information to be learned and studied. I had my highlighter in hand and paper on the desk to take notes. MARATHON METHOD is so much more than that! Tom shares his knowlege of exercise combined with nutrition in a very clever manner. His expertise of the sport paired with a great sense of humor made this a pleasure to read. I stayed up late to finish it because it was that good!
I have a good base to start training for the Paris Marathon!

Have to say going against most opinions here because I found little use in the book and quite glad I got it as a present and did not pay for it myself. I can see where some people might get some valuable information out of it but my biggest issue was that it couldn't decide if it was directed at the coach new to the game or an intermediate coach moving into coaching 11v11 games (hence little use for anyone coaching over 13's)

As the back of the book states the author has coached from 5 year olds to pros and it is obvious that he couldn't decide who to target the book at. Soccer books that try to cover all ages or aspects of the game are not good books

The book is packed with information. The basics are well explained, and many specific suggestions are made for exercises that are fun, and at the same time provide good learning for the players. Contained in the book is also a first hand introduction to soccer that will teach you what to look for next time you watch a soccer game, and most important, a tool for improving the skills of your players in a human and friendly way. This book will improve your perception. Highly recommended!

It also gets into a lot of game strategy, and it addresses the special situations such as throw-ins and corner kicks from offense and defense. Great Intermediate Book

Review Date: 2007-04-10
First, I have to define intermediate. I have coached U6 and U8 for 5 seasons, and have just moved up to coach U11. I bought this book and Progressive Soccer, and this book was MUCH better. It's pretty beat up now because I refer to it constantly. It has drills and games for all the skills, and most of them start out at a low level (U8 or so) and get more advanced. Almost all of them have worked out well for our team.
I would say this is not a beginner's book, too much info and probably too in depth for a brand-new coach. Not a lot of "kiddie games" like you would use for U6 or U8. I would say U10 and up can get a lot out of this book.
My only complaint is I would like a little more in the team strategy parts and "system of play" parts, the book is a little weak on those areas, other than going through some different formations (which won't apply if you don't play 11 on 11).
Again, highly recommended for the coach moving up for the first time into the U10 age group for the first time.

My first copy was pretty worn, so I decided to buy this edition. Really interesting new stories, not only from the Pardeys expereinces in storms, but also from others. I liked the deductions made by folks from both ends of the experience spectrum, one a real novice, others all along the expereince wave, they all add to the information Lin and Larry share in a very understandable manner. I still think this book is really important. And this edition is definitely easier to navigate. I have the Storm tactics DVD and like it. The two work well together.

About half-way through I came across Pardey's book. I think it's far and away the best volume out there on the subject. Even if you pass on the parachute angle and just plan on heaving-to in a tough situation. Should be in every crusing boat's library, and read and implemented by the skipper.

Also consider "Heavy Weather Sailing" (revised edition) as an excellent source of information on storm tactics and heavy weather sailing. It describes the yacht's stability in more detail.

Kim's considerate and smart coaching style really came out in this book; the one thing I love about her is that she seems so kind for someone so beautiful. They both did a superb job on this book.

The recipies were my favorite part and they were very yummy (although some looked better in the book than in my kitchen). The excercises were good although my favorite parts were the nutritional information and motivation segments.

Definitely a must have for anyone trying to improve their diets and/or excercise programs.

LOVE this book!

This book has everything. The best part is that she addresses the mental/emotional issues that are associated with losing weight. Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to make a change :)

I think this book has a wealth of knowledge. It helps you set small goals to help you work towards the overall goal. It took me a minute to figure out the exercise part, because it doesn't list reps, you do what you can in 30 seconds. If you need to get motivated to move this is the book. She starts you out slow and you progress through the 12 weeks.

She makes me feel as if she is explaining this in person to me!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I'm a fan of "The Biggest Loser", so I wanted to read her thoughts on weight loss. The book is well-written and very easy to read. The book is divided into four subjects: It's All About You(Gear, Mind, Body, Goals; Journals; Fitness); Your Workout(Exercises); Your Nutrition (Food; Meal Planning); Your Future. I found the section on posture(Chapter 2) to be interesting. She goes into the different types of posture, which is helpful to me.....I have a swayback posture. She lists the muscles that I would need to work on to correct this bad posture. I haven't found too many authors who expound on this subject in a diet book. At the end of each chapter, she gives you "homework." Suggestions to help you prepare for this program, which ultimately is a lifestyle change. These suggestions are not mandatory, or hard to do. I am finding the "homework" is helping me to plan better and be well organized in my approach to beginning this program. This was lacking in my earlier attempts at losing weight. She is very big on planning and writing things down. There are three levels of weight training exercises, and there are some stretching moves. There are pictures of her performing each step to an exercise so that you do it correctly. I can't say that the information in this book is new, but it is the way that she presents it that makes the difference to me along with a few things that she does personally to motivate herself. I feel that the book is written as if she were sitting in a room explaining this in person to me. I felt her enthusiasm as I was reading. I've read other good diet books, but I can honestly say that I didn't feel any real enthusiasm coming from the authors. I think that this is a good book. She shows you how to safely go about losing weight, being healthy, and keeping the weight off for good. I highly recommend it.
