This book was exactly what I was looking for. I had been running for a few months and my enthusiasm was starting to deminish. This book gave some very good pointers as well as helped me to identify with others who were beginners to the sport. I found out some things I needed to correct and felt encouraged at learning there were things I was doing that was right on the money. Also, the reading was entertaining and light. I believe if you are new to this sport, this is the book for you!

Good book unless you have read Marathoning for Mortals

I started out reading Marathoning for Mortals since it was available at the local library for free. When I decided I was not ready for a whole or even half marathon I stepped up by buying this book. There is several pieces of similar information in both books. That being said it is very inspirational and the training programs in the back seem achivable for everyone from my mother-in-law to my now in training husband. I highly recommend it.

I highly recommend this book for any beginner. If you have more running experience, it is a good read to remember why you started running in the first place.

Iam a difficult and undiscipline runner, but I love the few moment I have done it.
This book I bougth about 7 months ago and I read it in few days, well I trow it in my library and did not think at it again 'till today: I found a special friend whom did not meet at least 18 years ago, he is a runner, a real one, he goes NYC every single year for running marathon(from Costa Rica to NYC just to run...), and when I came back home I took this book and started reading and the most incredible thing: I was running for 25 minutes,my shoes and running pants where out the closed...for ever, I know that-
"The penguin" has the rare faculty to transmit one the taste for the primary human instinct: runnig....and runnig.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I've been running recreationally on and off (sadly, mostly off) for about 10 years and I've had phases when I've ran really well regularly and when I've struggled getting 30 minutes in per week. Not only is "Running for Mortals" quite inspirational, but it also corrected so many misconceptions I've had about how to become a "better" runner. Like most people, I suppose, I always thought that if high intensity over a short period of time is good, then high intensity over a longer period is better; and that if I'm improving my 5k time every few months then I'm on the right track even if I'm really struggling to keep going faster and found it harder to do the next run. Well, I was wrong on both counts (and on several others)! Bingham and Hadfield explain that there's ONLY one way to become a better runner and only one way to enjoy this sport over an extended period of time (I won't ruin it by giving the answer away). Suffice it to say that running "harder" is almost never "better". Bingham and Hadfield give many detailed technical tips on how to improve and explains the proper mental atitude to adopt. And I believe the training plans included in the last part of the book serve both experts and novices quite well. Even if I do almost all of my running indoors, I now have a renewed outlook on running and have become more patient and smart about how to go about achieving, and ENJOYING, my running goals. Most of all, both my wife and I have fully committed to doing the programs together so this book started us out on a new shared experience that'll hopefully last many years.

Krav Maga learning by book

Review Date: 2008-07-16
I own this book and am fortunate to teach Krav maga for a living.I share that information to put my opinions in perspective as I teach these and simmilar techniques every day.

I think the book is well presented and gives a deeper understanding into the techniques, principles and overall strategy than most others.

This book make a great companion for the serious student who wants more than a simple how to book. I have not seen any other books that cover the strategy of unarmed defence versus weapons in this detail.

I would reccomend buying this book with the american book 'complete krav maga' (Levene). The 2 would offer the potential student a great combination of theory and illustration.

In reply to the posting about the gun technique, I can see where you are coming from but this is the danger of learning from a book.To many subtle movements are lost The krav gun defence works well if done correctly, redirect/control the weapon, get off the line of fire, forward pressure, immediate counters etc but this is hard to show in a book.

I once saw Avi Nadia demonstrating Krav Maga gun techniques (incorrectly) and showing they did not work. He did not apply the basics ( no counters or forward pressure) and made the same mistakes a novice would make. This may have been deliberate (he was trying to show his own kapap system was better) but the point is a good krav practioner who had actually trained would know how to do it correctly.

if you start learning life threatening technique, dont learn it from a book find an instructor.

This book bases defenses on our natural instincts and reflexes. Even so, practice is necessary to gain meaningful results. The key is that the book aims to present techniques that are easy to learn and hard to forget.

I found 20% of the book to be helpful as a review of what I was learning in class. The book was worthwhile for that alone.

The other 80% represents a range from a preview of what I will be learning to stuff that is and will always be well beyond my competence. However, it is 100% interesting.

The photos are clear and helpful. The consistent dress of the attacker and defender make it easier to understand. This makes it a great review and practice tool.

My sense is that many of the reviewers are looking for the same perfection they strive for in martial arts in a book. Unless written by the master under whom they study there will always be conflicts and inconsistencies. Perhaps some of these reviewers only find perfection in the bathroom mirror. But this alone does not make the book flawed.

Will the book take you out of your off the couch and prepare you for deadly combat in 10 days - no. Will it help you absorb and improve what you are learning and have learned in class? YES. Will it help you to understand and appreciate what is possible? YES

Highly recommended.

Stupid But Funny - That's the Point

I bought this for one reason... to get my order up so I could get free shipping. It's meant to be written by a kid who loves ninjas (and who doesn't love ninjas) and is somewhat along the vein of askaninja.com but not quite as ... ahem ... sophisticated. I did catch myself laughing out loud a few times, so right there, the book is worth it for me. Of course, some of it is dumb but I've never read any book that I totally loved, front to back. Neither of them. It's cheap, it's funny, and is good ninja training material for when all ninjas are called up to save the world.

Wittgenstein Power

Review Date: 2008-08-27
With REAL ULTIMATE POWER, Robert Hamburger has written a great mocking treatise on everything Ninja, using the topic to pick apart the freaky passions of the pre, or near, pubescent male in western society. Of course, this is assuming that "Hamburger" is indeed a pen name; if not, an explanation using intentional fallacy must come into play... The epitome of satire is being named among those one satirizes, thus with the current moniker of "Frat-Lit," it seems Hamburger has completed his mission. Will he rest among the great satirists such as Swift, Dryden, Twain, Orwell, or even Groening? Perhaps not. Yet while Robert Hamburger may be young in years, he is no child, and there should be a regarded place for his work. And a great work it is. It is too easy to "after-the-fact" pick apart the banal aspects of REAL ULTIMATE POWER; much harder to find the deeper meaning among the interstices.

Then again, I've not laughed out loud as much during a reading in many years. This may be a sign of a personal lack of taste, or perhaps even an indictment of low art. However, the astute reader will surely find the value hidden in this work.

This is a masterfully written book about computer hacking - wireless hacking, ARP spoofing, malformed packets, protocol violations, Back Orifice, man in the middle, bluetooth, radio, etc.

These reviews, while a valiant cover-up effort, are completely absurd. Nice try, doodz.

This is a hacking masterpiece. Every security professional should read this. Fortunately for the dark side - they won't.

Goes good with "Sailmakers's apprentice".

As a rigger myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most informative and useful for my trade. However, there was little or no mention of brews OR 3 leets - surely this is an integral part of being a RIGGER? Also, there is only one rigger.

Oh, and Ryan Jendoubi.

Good book but missing key information
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-21
This book has LOTS of really good information. But it is missing some significant stuff, Brion. PLEASE PLEASE do another addition and include SOME information about the following:

1. Chainplates. Nothing. How is a proper chainplate shaped, mounted, doubled, etc? Where do they go? What should you consider when changing from single boomking backstay to double backstays?

2. Bowsprits. Hardly a word. How is a proper bowsprit mounted? What kind of materials are appropriate for a bobstay? etc.

3. Stemheads. Hardly a word. Come on, what good is a rig if it isn't mounted to something????

4. Mast steps. The rig seems to float in air with this book, and no proper consideration is given to how it MOUNTS TO THE BOAT.

Other than that, it is a great book. Lots of good info, formulas, etc. Lots of great knots, lots of funny quips, good explanation of how single and double spreader rigs are stayed and shrouded.

But most of us also have boats to go along with our rigs, and it would be nice to have a WHOLE CHAPTER on how the rig connects to the boat, because many of us need to maintain, repair, and improve that part of the rig as well.

Good book, but it is incomplete as currently published.

This book is a must read for all gun owners especially if you are thinking about getting a CCW license. This is also a good book to send to people that are anti-gun. After reading this book the anti-gun people might change their minds about guns. I sent this book to my sister who hates guns.

Excellent Primer on Self-Defense Protection for the Citizen Soldier!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-25
This excellent manual gives precise details to American citizens in exercising their 2nd Amendment Civil Rights during a criminal or even terrorist attack. This book is comprehensive and includes information on:
*Regulations
*Shooting Instructions - Beginner to Advanced
*Case Studies about concealed carry action
*Safety Regulations and methods

This book is like a mini-course in and of itself. You can learn about selecting a handgun, the duty of self-defense and also methods of concealing a weapon. In addition, as I teach martial arts, I tell people that the most important weapon is Your Mind. Don't get involved in any dangerous encounters if you can avoid them. Ultimately, the taking of a human life - for people with a conscience - is a life-altering and difficult experience. It can be traumatic because it is a situation that few wish to experience - unless it involves saving your life and your loved ones from criminals.

Even after much training, I learned many new things from this book. This book is very thought provoking and if you don't have a CHL yet, you will want one after you read this book. This is a book I will not loan out, but will buy extra copies for all the gals in my shooting club.

Diver Down is an easy to read book that appeals to all divers, expert or novice. The book focuses on mistakes made by divers at all experience, levels which in some cases cost them their lives. Reading this book will enable you to learn valuable lessons without making the same mistakes these unfortunate divers made.

I think among divers it is generally known, that the majority of dive accidents could easily have been prevented with better planning or better reactions to occuring problems.
Newer divers, and even some experienced ones, however lack certain experiences, that make dives safe while still being enjoyable.
This book gets you thinking...
I myself came away from reading it with one or two things that I will do differently in the future...
I can recommend this book to any diver.

Great Book, Every Diver should read this Book
