What a great manual. I have used Chilton and Haynes manuals all my life and I recently bought a BMW and needed a manual for it. I found this one and although it costs more than the others, it is by far the best manual I have ever used. It's very detailed and lots of photos. You will be happy with this purchase.

Having just acquired a BMW coupe, purely by chance, one felt that a guide book to the wonderful world of Bavarian technology was essential. After all they do not make bicycles, though if they did one would need a degree to service them. The modern BMW is designed by engineers who have both the ability to be extremely simple in their approach while at the same time cloaking their complex systems in a simple smooth stylish exterior. (I exclude all bangled designs from this last comment) The Bentley book gives one an opening into this world allowing exploration without falling into elephant traps; an educational glimpse of modern automobile technology written in easy to read English with helpful diagrams, pictures and instructions. Supplementing this heavy tome with easily accessed DIY internet sources like E46 fanatics etc will enable one to care for your pride and joy without plumbing the depths of depression and your bank account. Read, learn and inwardly digest and enjoy

This is a very complete and comprehensive servicemanual for anyone who doesn't really know much about the technology underneath the hood (or anywhere else in the car for that matter). If you know what exactly is wrong with your car, bets are this manual will help you fix it.

I own multiple BMWs so I own multiple Bentley manuals to cover them. The updated E46 3 series manual is my most recent acquisition since my newest BMW is a 2004 330xi. The Bentley manuals cover more detail than most of their competitors, have good clear pictures, note the variations from year to year in the production run, and are well produced on good paper stock (or on CD media in some cases). If you maintain your own car and want to be able to do more than the most basic things, this is a must have. Even if you just want to understand how things fit together, it's a good resource.

A "Must Have" for E46 Do-It -Yourself Projects

I recently bought this book as a reference guide for my 2000 BMW 328Ci. In the past few years I have migrated toward maintaining my own car rather than paying high fees for work of varying quality at the dealership.

I have benefited greatly by using the internet as a reference for DIY projects such as oil changes, brake pad replacement, and brake bleeding etc. In my opinion this manual is excellent for providing additional procedural detail, pictures, guides and practices that are not available elsewhere.

I also have a service manual for my Honda Pilot. Of the two, I feel the BMW Service Manual is better written.

A MUST HAVE

If you want to NAVIGATE this is a MUST HAVE. I have the older 2 volume set. This is the bible for navigation. This book should be on every boat that sails coastal or trans-oceantic. Everything you will ever need is in this book. Almost any other navigation book out there is just an abridged version of a chapter or 2 from this complete book. There is so much information in this book that you will never get rid of it. You will always be able to learn more each time you open it. This is the text book for navigation used at the Maritime Colleges. Every professional Merchant Mariner has and uses this book. It has everything you need to pass your USCG Masters licence exams for navigation and more. If you have a boat, you need this book.

Everything you wanted to know about navigation, but were afraid to ask.

A newfound interest in celestial navigation and all things nautical prompted me purchase this book. As far as celestial goes, the book concentrates on sight reduction by tables rather than by calculator or computer. In that respect, it's disappointing. The background chapters for navigation astronomy are pertinent to all forms of sight reduction.

I was also interested in navigational mathematics and "The Sailings". Those subjects are well represented and easy to understand.

The book is physically imposing and the depth of information is astounding. It's divided into sections, so you can cover areas of interest a bit at a time. It's easy to read - for a textbook.

If you enjoy this subject matter, this is one of the "go to" books. It's well worth the money.

Excellent book, excellent buy

The American Practical Navigator has been a classic since the early 1800's. This bicentennial edition not only includes traditional subjects such as tides, celestial, and terrestrial navigation, but also includes electronic navigation.

The book is a must have reference for any serious student of navigation.

Byron Barton's Trains has become an unlikely favorite for our 2-year old. I say unlikely because it's so different from what most of his favorites (which are heavy on Sandra Boynton, Jez Alborogh, and the Spot series) are like. The art is extremely simple, using lots of bold colors, and the story doesn't rhyme or feature any noticeable repetition. It's not really even a story at all, but rather a descriptive sentence on each page highlighting the kind of train or activity shown.

I don't know whether it's the bold colors or just the subject matter (my son is absolutely fascinated by all kinds of vehicles), but this little board book went straight into his bedtime "top 5" and shows no sign of leaving! I may not get it, but I'm confident enough after seeing my son's reaction to this book to recommend Trains to the parents of any toddler interested in trains.

My son loved this book from the time he was about 15 months old. The words and the illustrations are simple and catchy. I'm not sure if this one comes in paperback but I highly suggest getting all of the Barton books in the board book style. They are sure to be read over and over!!

I was a teacher in early childhood and I love to find new books for my grandson, who is almost 3. At the early level they need simple books both in text and pictures. The Barton books have a very simple text and great pictures and my grandson loves all of them. I always let him choose what books to read and Barton is his favorite since he was 1 1/2. I would recommend all of his books for young children ages 1 to 4. We have read Trucks, Trains, Men at Work, Planes, Airport & Dinosaurs.

My six-year-old asked about how cars were invented, and we purchased this "easy reader" as an introduction. My six-year-old and four-year-old sons like the story. At the conclusion of the (abbreviated and simplified) account of Henry Ford and the Model T, there is an historic photo of Henry Ford which is pretty neat.

Curious George, Margret & H. A. Rey's loveable monkey (Technically he's a Chimpanzee but we won't quibble too much . . . .) has received a series of new stories but in the same structure and style of the original. In these stories, George is a good monkey who tries to be helpful but allows his curiosity to cause problems. In the end however, George saves the day and all is forgiven. In this story, George, along with the Man in the Yellow Hat, is going on a train trip, causes problems in the station and then prevents a small boy from falling on the tracks. In the end, George and his new friend the small boy receive a ride in the locomotive. (I hope they brought earplugs.)

My mother taught me to read with Curious George and the Man with the Yellow Hat more than 30 years ago and it is good to see new stories for the cheeky little fellow. This story does not have quite the touch of the original but is very close. A good story with a good lesson and highly recommended.

Another take on George

Refusing to believe that love permits control or perhaps distracted by his companion Mrs. Needleman, the man with the yellow hat once again disappears as George wanders unsupervised. This time, in a train station mired in mid-century stasis, George rearranges the trainmaster's board in a misguided attempt to help. In the end, George discovers that what it takes to be forgiven is good intentions and the quick wits to save someone's life. Unlike Vipah Interactive's spanking clean take on George, Martha Weston's looser, darker illustrations harken back to the original's feeling of big city grit.

Not as Good as the Other George Stories

My son LOVES trains, and he also loved the Curious George movie. He has several of the books based on the Rey's style, and the PS2 Curious George game.

Curious George Takes a Train is the first George book I've bought "sight unseen" (from Amazon.com). However, since my son loves both trains and George, I felt it was a great fit.

Granted, my son seems to like the book. Out of the four books illustrated/written in the Rey tradition, my son owns three by Martha Weston. The other--Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory--is illustrated by Vipah Interactive.

Weston is heavy on the black charcoal as it is (as seen in the shadowing of books like Curious George Visits a Toy Store), but she is *especially* heavy with the black illustrations in Curious George Takes a Train. In fact, it often looks as if a child has taken a black crayon and (no lie) colored vertical streaks of black right on top of the people!

It's very unattractive, in my opinion, but kids don't seem to notice these types of things. I also felt that the story was a bit harrowing for a George tale (a little boy runs from his father after a toy train, the gate closes behind him, and the boy almost goes out in front of the tracks--but George saves his life.)

The story is a bit quick...it goes from the Man with the Yellow Hat strolling off with Mrs. Needleman in the station to George climbing up and messing with the numbers and letters on the train schedule--and then off to saving the boy!

If your child is a train enthusiast who likes George, he/she will likely enjoy this book. However, as far as stories go--and illustrations--there are better books in this series, in my opinion.

My 2 year old son is fascinated with this book. He finishes the sentences on each page as we read it to him. It was one of his first non-board books. We place it on a shelf along with other "fragile" books and the "place of honor" makes it seem extra special to him - so he is very careful with it.

We got this book at the library and my 3 year old boy loved it nearly to pieces. I am looking into getting one he can keep, or maybe giving the library the new one and having him keep the torn and taped one! He has it memorized and "reads" it over and over to himself and his little sister. This book not only fascinates the little "digger men" that like to read it, but also teaches values such as hard work, good maintenance, productivity, and taking care of little brother. Your own little "digger man" will be sure to love it.

Manual transmissions aren't as sexy as some other engine parts that I could think of (like cams, or turbos), but that doesn't make them boring!

This book covers the little-known and little-described topic of manual transmissions. The writer attacks the subject from the angle of a "weekend warrior" mechanic or car builder, which means it's neither dry and academic nor lowbrow.

Manual transmissions, clutches and even differentials are covered in enough detail to be useful without drowning in theory. Unlike many automotive books it's full of meaty details and tips - the chapter on manual transmission diagnosis alone is worth the cost.

Even if you're not a die-hard stick shifter, it's a fun read and an interesting look at the technology behind a manual transmission. If nothing else, you could read it and impress the guys at your local hot-rod spot with your knowledge of gear oil additives.

Besides, where else can you get all the current thinking on manual transmission modifications in one place?

This book is well written and easy to understand with many pictures. It is a good starting point for anyone considering rebuilding a manual transmission.

The book covers material that is common knowledge for professionals, but that is hard to learn as an amatuer trying to learn on his/her own. Specifically in the areas of dianosis of problems, and explicit function of components.

I recommend this book.

This book really presents the work and theory in a straightforward manner. It explains what you are doing and why, and what happens when something goes wrong. It's easy enough to follow lightly as you work, or to read in depth to really learn something. You can easily pull from it what information you need. I would recommend this book to anyone with a technical background, whether already you know what you are doing or just starting your first project, there is definitely something to gain here.

This is about as good as children's books get. Most (if not all) of the illustrations wouldn't look out of place framed and on the wall. The rhyme and meter are wonderful (lord knows I've read my son enough stories that can't seem to handle those smoothly). The School Library Journal review above that complains about the text is ridiculous -- the example quote isn't even accurate!

It's short enough to read to a toddler but interesting enough for an older child to read on his own. You can't go wrong with Taxi Dog!

Most children who visit/live in NYC will ride a taxi. So, the book's topic is very relevant to their own experience. Things about the city are subtly tied into the the wonderful rhymes of this book (e.g. dogs, Central Park, the Circus, Broadway) without being too "touristy."

If you want to know how your Prius works (as opposed to how to use it) this is a great book. It's a large book with hard cover and quality paper. The actual structure of the book is designed to be used in the shop.

If you want to hack your car this is full of useful information about the stock configuration.

If you are like me and just curious about how your car works and paranoid enough to feel an obligation to know how your car works (beyond the marketing material) this book may be overkill, but all other books outside the toyota official manual (that I've seen) fall short.

The presentation of information is logically organized and I find it's usually easy to find information I'm interested in.

This book is a great resource for any Prius owner to prevent getting screwed at the dealer or repair shop. It is indespensible for any owner who wants to make some modifications like the EV Mode button or adding the Plug In capability from Cal Cars open source. The diagrams and photos are great and include descriptions of the function of specific parts. On the first day of getting this book in the mail, I had a greater understanding of the two electric motors in the transmission. A must own for any Prius owner.

Originally I purchased a Haynes repair manual since no other was available at the time. It is inexpensive, but the information is very limited. The manual you see here from Bentley Publisher's is far more thorough and attractive. This thick, 648 page hardcover manual specifically covers the 2004-2008 Prius (US second generation) whereas the other manual has half as many pages and covers both versions from 2001 through 2008, meaning that more generic information is being crammed into fewer pages. If all you ever intend to do is change your oil and air filter, the Haynes manual is likely a good value. On the other hand, this Bentley manual is a better choice for owner's of the newer Prius offering a better layout with far more complete explanations and images. The wiring diagrams alone are worth the purchase of this Bentley repair manual. This is a case where you truly get what you pay for.

Although I have only read, not actually had to use, this manual to fix a prius, it is very thoughtfully put together.

There is a significant amount of hybrid technical training information which helps the owner or independent tech understand how the Prius hybrid system works, and helps identify the work that can be reasonably expected to be done outside a dealership.

The first few sections (with theory and safety) are in full color. The 5th star is because it is a really nice product. The hardcover may not be necessary, but it is nice.

The more technical chapters, include a high level of detail for the work covered. I noticed a comment on the haynes book asks for ignition coil torque information (which the other review says is not in the haynes book, I haven't checked). This book does have torque specs for the ignition coils, which are probably the information that the other reviewer is talking about.

My only complaint so far is that when I was looking up repair information there seems to be a significant amount of white space at the bottom of pages where there wasn't enough room to fit the next graphic. The graphics are big, which is nice, but at first I didn't turn the page and notice that the section I was reading actually continued on to the next page.

Look forward to using it. Looks perfect for me -- the person who wants to understand everything, and do some basic stuff outside a dealership.

Like many young men, and I daresay women, I was drawn to airport management after exposure to Burt Lamcaster's sterling portrayal of a harried airport manager in the Ross Hunter classic AIRPORT. Lancaster showed us that a man could handle a million problems all at once, if he had the right combination of grit and gray cells. It wasn't only the glamor, it was the idea of helping people get through their day--even when the people in question were six or seven miles up in the air--that made me consider airport management as a major at school.

Other factors prevented me from achieving my goal, but I continue to pick up textbooks and manuals to keep abreast of the way airports have changed over the last 35 years. From a technical point of view, one of the best resources for the lay manager is the Alexander Wells book AIRPORT PLANNING & MANAGEMENT (AP & MANAGEMENT) co-authored with Seth Young, both of them prominent in the field--and the airfield--today. This book brings you thoroughly up to date on the way the skies (and the terminals) have changed since the day of infamy, 9/11. Their information is laid out with dispatch, not a wasted word between them. In addition, they know their stuff, that's for sure. Over five hundred pages and I could detect only a few minor inaccuracies.

If you were assigned to develop your own airport in some understaffed part of the world, this would be the volume you would bring with you. If you were limited to bringing one textbook with you. Of course, the old joke among airport planning students is, what CD would you bring? Why, Briano Eno's MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS of course.

As an aviation professor, I wanted a book that offered a comprehensive but relatively basic overview to the many aspects of airport management. Airport Planning & Management is an easy read and its format makes it easy to refer back to areas of the book for review. It has a good balance of charts, diagrams, and graphics. It is a great book for students that want a well-rounded understanding of airports and their operations. It is also a great book for anyone who just want to know how airports work!

Airport Planning & Management is an excellent reference for any student of airport management or aviation.

The book details just about every facet of how an airport is run. From airport site selection to runway design and everything in between, Airport Planning & Management just about covers it all.

The chapters are all well written and extremely well organized. Any aviation enthusiast who is interested in how airports are run will find this a valuable reference.
