Everything in the book is from the FAA Instrument Flying Handbook which was published as printed in this book in 2007. The content is great. All the FAA publications are and none are copyrighted as our tax dollars paid for them. But Sky Horse does not have a right to claim this publication is more recent that what the FAA or others publish.

First off... this is an essential book. Do note that it can be downloaded for free from the FAA:

...but many times it's better to have the print version. There are some vendors selling illegal CD versions of this on Amazon when you purchased that are not paperback as listed. Do NOT accept this if they send you a CD. Demand the print, book version if you purchase it - and do not tolerate the scams.

A Time Treasured Book

This book has been around for a long time and continues to be used in flight training. I enjoy the simplicity of the illustrations and explanations of weather. I believe this book will continue to be used for years to come.

Great Resource

This volume is a terrific overview of weather for both pilots and non-pilots. It was obviously written by people who love weather and like explaining it.

The downside is that the printing is cheaply done and is, at times, difficult to read. This is a commercial reprint (done by ASA--Aviation Supplies and Academics) that really should have been done better. Unfortunately the PDF version on the FAA web site is an old photocopy which is simply awful. I downloaded but deleted it because it's almost impossible to read.

Many better products out there. Read the reviews. If you want a good, basic overview of weather and weather reports, look at "Rod Machado's Complete Private Pilot."

The FAA's weather products (including "Aviation Weather Services") are in need of major reformatting. That's unfortunate because their "Airplane Flying Handbook" and "Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge" are superb. Both are available as PDFs on the FAA web site and are required reading for the private pilot certificate.

I had to buy this book for one of my classes and fell asleep many times while trying to read the assigned chapters. I have seen books that are much more interesting and do a better job explaining weather (Jeppesen: Aviation Weather).

What the FAA requires you to know as a pilot.

Published as an official FAA Advisory Circular, Aviation Weather (and the accompanying book AC 00-45 Aviation Weather Services) contains the info you will be required to know to pass the FAA private, commercial, and instrument rating written examinations. Aviation Weather is written in an easy-to-understand manner. It discusses the various cloud formations, formation of warm, cold, occluded, and stationary fronts, the life cycle of thunderstorms, winds (both surface and aloft), icing, and many other weather phenomena. Profusely illustrated with charts, graphs, photos, and diagrams. Understand this and you will know how to "fly the weather" competently. A classic book that all pilots should have in their library, with info that will never become outdated.

My 3-yr-old adores this book. He's a big fan of the Cars movie, though, which is why. The artwork is fun and slightly different than the style in the movie, but everyone is fully recognizable.

The only issue for me was trying to explain the concept of a mystical threat to a 3-yr-old, not to mention the idea of a practical joke. He is getting it, though, contextually.

This is a must have book if you own a 1965-89 911. I found the book to be as detailed as a shop manual on the subjects it covers yet with the friendly writing that anyone can comprehend.

This book covers the basics like changing your oil to more complex tasks like fixing common oil leaks and fixing various transmission problems. -all with many excellent photos of the procedures outlined.

I've read and referred to this book countless times both for enjoyment and for reference to maintain my Porsche.

An interesting multi-cultural book for ages 5-7

Review Date: 2008-01-03
I found this book to be a very interesting way to introduce young children to cultures from around the world. Twenty-three different children/groups of children are introduced in this book along with how they get to school. Nine of the children featured are from the US, but children from Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, Canada, and Mexico, are also introduced. Rhyming text is simple enough to keep young readers engaged, while helping children to decipher new words. The watercolor illustrations are a suiting simple backdrop for the story. At the end of the book there is a list of where each child is from, and I can imagine incorporating a guessing game based upon picture or text clue to help determine where the children are from. There is also a 2 page spread world map that is also in watercolor identifying where each of the children are.

My daughters favorite mode of getting to school was the Swiss Alpine trolley. She loudly exclaimed she would like to go to school that way everyday!

Overall, this book is a valuable contribution to a classroom, home, or public library as it introduces diverse cultures, geography, and both simple and challenging words for young readers.

Good book for multicultural unit

Review Date: 2006-01-08
The illustrations in the book aren't fantastic, but they are clear and show the landscape of where each child lives. The text describes, using only a sentence or two for each page, how children around the world get to school. I think the brief text is great for the subject--since the book generates a lot of discussion, it takes awhile to get through. This is the type of book I would recommend in paperback for your classroom use; don't spend the extra money for a hardcover version. The kids enjoy hearing it but it's not something they'll ask for over and over. Oh- and the book has a back page with a map showing where each child is from. What a great addition for Kindergarten/First graders who are more familiar with the globe.

Wonderful book for multiculural and transportation lessons

I bought this manual when I decided it was time to start doing my own maintenance on my 5 series. My brake wear indicator came on showing that I was in need of brake pads and rotors, so having this book was invaluable when the time came to do the job. I had done some checking on dealer prices and found that a brake job can run anywhere from $800 - $1200. With the help of this manual, I did it myself for the cost of the parts and a few hours of work. The manual is rather expensive, but I saved about four times as much just on the brake job. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to work on their own cars.

THE book on SS1

Review Date: 2008-06-07
Dan Linehan's book Spaceshipone: An Illustrated History represents one of the best historical descriptions of the entire SS1 project written to date. Have been involved in the development of SS1, I can attest to its accuracy, and to Linehan's painstaking efforts and meticulous work to get the story, facts, and documentation correct. As an example, there is an photograph of the interior the SS1 cockpit, with all major controls and instrumentation annotated on the image. This is the kind of detail you will find nowhere else. I predict that this book will become the seminal reference on the SS1 program. I don't know how many copies were made in this first printing, but I'm glad that I've got a first edition.

Review Date: 2008-07-05
I love this book. It inspires and informs beyond the SpaceShipOne to cover the people and their passions. Their dreams and aspirations, and how it all ties together in a grand tapestry of our collective aspirations to soar into the sky and beyond.

There are plenty of technical details that show the challenges faced and the ingenuity in overcoming them. Much is laid out in gorgeous photos and well written explanations.

If you've not seen it already, I highly recommend also getting the Discovery Channel documentary "Black Sky". Really the two mediums of print and video complement well. For some it might work best to see that first and then the book for a slower, more detailed look. That's how it worked for me though not intentionally. The video came out first.

There is only one thing I would add to this book, a photo of the crowd in attendance for the first flight to space. I was there with my oldest friend, having driven for 5 hours in the middle of the night to see such an historic event and join the thousands of others in a collective two thumbs up to the folks who made it happen. It was not an orchestrated event, there was no fare and no concessions. Just a community of wellwishers and dreamers hopping to also soar into that black sky, and see the curved earth below. To float free if only for a few minutes. As Burt himself said, it's a very good beginning. Here's hoping the trajectory is straight and high.

Five Star Rocket Ride

Review Date: 2008-05-22
On the first line of the acknowledgments page, author Dan Lineham apologizes to "any of my former English teachers who will have heart failure upon hearing that I actually wrote a book." I'm no doctor, but I have read a lot of space and aviation books, and I can say with certainty that all his former teachers are in no medical danger. This is a fantastic book. Really first rate. Glossy pictures throughout supporting excellent in-depth writing that has inside information with plenty of background history. And a foreword by the late Arthur C. Clarke who accurately says this book is "the inside story of how citizens reclaimed space."

It is so exciting to be reading about modern advances in space (by private rebels!), rather than re-hashed history from 40 and 50 years ago. I was worried that the book would be a few press pictures slapped together with a few superficial words covering just a couple of flights; but this is loads of awesome photographs with detailed and balanced writing coming from unique insider access. There is history and breadth with personal commentary from key players. There is detail with logs of all the flights and a full transcript of the Ansari X Prize-winning spaceflight. Overall a real quality production about a real exciting chapter in human history.

Love this book as do my kids. Boys love diggers, but my daughter loves this book too. Simple to understand and the big brother wants to teach his little brother to be a Digger Man too! I gave this as a gift in conjunction with a "digger" toy and everytime my son plays with it, he also wants to read this book.

My 2 year old son is fascinated with this book. He finishes the sentences on each page as we read it to him. It was one of his first non-board books. We place it on a shelf along with other "fragile" books and the "place of honor" makes it seem extra special to him - so he is very careful with it.

We got this book at the library and my 3 year old boy loved it nearly to pieces. I am looking into getting one he can keep, or maybe giving the library the new one and having him keep the torn and taped one! He has it memorized and "reads" it over and over to himself and his little sister. This book not only fascinates the little "digger men" that like to read it, but also teaches values such as hard work, good maintenance, productivity, and taking care of little brother. Your own little "digger man" will be sure to love it.
