Great Non-Fiction Easy Readers!

Most easy readers are short basic stories that get old quickly. These little books (Pull Ahead - Mighty Movers series) are different. They are non-fiction learning experiences filled with information little kids, particularly boys, want to know. The topics covered in these books are myriad and they are all well written. They are easy enough for little ones to read, and still provide challenges as they include more technical terms like "tread" and "engine". Certain words are in bold. These are words that are included in the glossary in the back. There is also an index, a fun facts page, and a diagram labeling the various parts.

For being and easy reader, it doesn't get any better than this!

Great book! Monster trucks are cool.

This is a comprehensive work that provides the pros and cons of life on the road. Although some of the material is out-dated the core message is complete. I found the information on licenses, vehicle registration, and voter registration to be very thought provoking.

This book is full of great information. Every chapter is very detailed. What I like most about the book is that it discusses things to consider when looking for your RV - things you might not have even considered had you not read this book. Also contains a great section on customizing/modifying your RV for full time RVing. A great book to read if you are considering the full time RV life style.

Solid Information for Living Full-Time in an RV

Review Date: 2006-01-31
My husband wanted to try full-time RVing, but I was too attached to having a house. Anyone trying to make that decision, needs to read this book.
It helps you figure the costs of such a lifestyle and how to deal with mail, licenses, and medical issues without a home base. Two chapters cover selecting an RV for full-timing. Then it addresses adjusting the RV to your special needs and what to do about storage. Five chapters cover the care of the RV (electrical systems, water, sewage, etc.). There are sections on driving, security, and selecting campgrounds.
We're talking about more than 500 pages of solid information here. It's essential for full-time RVers and quite useful for even part-time RVers.

Older book but some good information

This is an older book on RV living and as such it doesn't have much if anything in the way of solar for power, satellite dish for TV and computer use or other off the grid living information one needs in 2007+. But the information on mail, medical, fees for various things, and what type of floor plan for an RV vs a trailer are helpful. Am still looking for a newer book and one that speaks to the single woman who travels in an RV and alone.

I read this book about 10 times and threw it at the wall WHAT an incredibly stupid book. NO IT isnt I was though and all you need to know is there ITS actually a great book to learn with BUT it doesnt point out the key points to grasp very well BUT trust me its there you just need to pay attention to what mr horner is saying. If you pay attention and arent expecting some kind of miracle surge of electrical knowledge into your brain then this book will teach you how to wire a car from tip to tail. After my impatient little brain paid attention to mr horner I found that I understood electrical systems far better than most people and I could wire any brand of car because the basics are all the same from vw to lexus. THIS book is worth its price

yea, electrical info it's in there...

Great book for learing how to wire a car from scratch. Although written in 1986 and a lot of references are made to kit cars and VW bugs (a favorite foundation for kit cars), this book explains how most things electrical work in your car, as well as how to create your own electrical system. Highly reccomended to anyone into restoring an old car or building a car from "scratch". Also get Haynes "Automotive Electrical Manual" to learn how to troubleshoot and fix a wiring harness, also highly reccomended.

I can't tell you enough how I wish that all Helicopter flight schools and the FAA should make this book manatory to read. This book could SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Well,i had been looking for a book related to helicopter accidents and causes until i saw "Fatal Traps For Helicopter Pilots".The dramatic accident rate of helicopter operations always took my attention and made me ponder over the subject. This book gives vast information of helicopter aerodynamics and inspects the accident "cause" and "result" logic, rather than connect the dots theory. It does not matter if you are a novice or a veteran pilot, you had better have a look at the Fatal Traps For Helicopter Pilots, because i am sure that you would find something from yourself in this book.
Bottom line;Helo pilots must read this book in order to save lives, because the experince which is the most valuable asset in aviation world comes to you with a reasonable cost.

Good Idea

First off, the idea of dissecting accidents to learn what/what not to do is a great idea and something that rotorcraft pilots definitely miss out on--Whyte should be praised for taking the initiative to do this. On the downside, too much of the book is just raw accident reports (or Whyte's summary of them) that offer either the most basic details or minutiae that makes sense only to the manufacturer's engineers. At some points it's frustrating to read through these not knowing where they're going, or trying to understand technical details only to end a chapter without getting any insight from them. Whyte could have vastly improved this book by taking the time to cut through the crap in these reports and focus on the details relevant to the point he's looking at, although the page count would have been much smaller...

On the flip side, the value in this book comes from:
1/ It is specific to helicopter flight and operations
2/ Whyte's sorting thru all the accident reports that illustrate all the bad stuff you read about in your training. In addition, some (but not all) of the illustrations and explanations go far beyond what you'll find in other books (eg, the FAA's book), making it a good complement for what you'll need during your training. For example, Whyte's book has the best explanation of VRS/SWP that I've seen.

I would have liked to see more focus on R22-specific issues (the SFAR 73 accidents) and a chapter on personnel safety at landing sites would have been a nice addition. Operation-specific hazards (eg, long-lining, operations over water or dense forest), discussion of the relative risks in different ships, and an analysis of how a situation could have been averted or recovered would have made this book a grand slam. Don't get me wrong, all student pilots should read this book at some point in their training, but I hope Whyte will significantly improve the content in later editions.

My daughter loves the movie Cars so when I found this book I had to get it for her. It is a little short but it follows the same basic premise of the movie. The pictures are very nice and colorful and catch her attention. On her own she likes to go through the book and point out the characters and say who they are. This is a great Little Golden Book!

Take care of those who love you, it will come back to you. Learn not to be selfish and self serving. Really, is not that how we will all have a better life?

This book is too short for too much money.

"Pilot's rules of thumb" has all of the same information AND MORE for LESS money.

Pilot's rules of thumb: Rules of thumb, easy aviation math, handy formulas, quick tips

The typeface is very large making the "book" a pamphlet - a very expensive pamphlet.

I have been flying jets at the airlines for over 10 years now and there are really only a handful of basic formulas you need and spending the time to go through the entire book would be a waste of your interview preparation time...even though you could thoroughly go through the entire book, cover-to-cover, in an aftenoon.

OK reference book. For pro pilots it's a good review but probably nothing you didn't know at one time. It's not a big book either, you could read it in an hour or two. And their is too much basic 2nd/3rd grade math: How to add, subtract, multiply, etc. that was unnecessary. But if you forgot how to figure a descent rate, VDP, TAS or ground speed, than it's a good review.

For its price, I found this little booklet not helpful. The first 5 pages are essentially advertising for a consulting firm (the author's employer) that prepares pilots for airline interviews. The final 5 pages again are mostly advertising for that same company's products. A 14-page appendix contains a review of how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide (at the level of teaching you that 3 + 4 = 7). Another 10-page appendix contains addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tables. In the remainder of the book (55 - very small - pages), I found exactly one useful rule: how to meet a crossing restriction. There are one or two other rules that in years of corporate flying I have never found useful (such as how to calculate your hydroplaning speed - interesting in concept, but practically not very useful).
If your math is below high school level, this book may be useful to you. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend this book.
If you are planning to prepare for an interview, I would recommend you save the money you would have spent on this book and buy "Everything explained for the professional pilot" instead; and if you are interviewing for a job in a turbine-powered aircraft, "The turbine pilot's flight manual" - both those books are MUCH more helpful.

Review Date: 2004-02-27
Having a slightly flakey Honda Rebel it became very important to me to be able to find my way around the bike. This manual is extremely informative and extremely accurate. It does detail just about everything you need to know.

However for a relative neophyte such as myself it has some significant deficiencies:
1) The photographs are black and white and quite low contrast, you cannot always quite see what they are pointing at and thus finding it on the bike is tough
2) I think these manuals are designed for a motorcycle repair shop, they often assume too much. 'Quickly check the compression before reseting the timing' is not detailed enough for someone that is proud he found the ignition switch ...
3) They were only half updated for the newer model. The 199x model rebels are different to the older ones but all the differences are contained in a seperate chapter

As I say, I don't think there is anything any better ... but this manual will be a little intimidating for a newbie ...

This is a great little book that my son loves. We bought if after we fell in love with Cowboy Small by Lois Lenski. However, I have found that the books about the characters have very simple text and plots, but the ones about vehicles tend to be VERY detailed. I feel like after reading this book I could fly a 1940's airplane (the same goes for the little sail boat and little train in hard back, I think the text in the board books is a little more basic). My son is almost 3 and sticks with the story and still asks for it every night, but it is not nearly as age appropriately story wise as policeman small, cowboy small, or the smalls.

This review was actually written by the father of the child to whom I gave the book. He is a pilot as is the child's grandfather.
"The plane looks just like a red Piper Clipper, so Grandpa Tom will be delighted. Clearly written by someone who has flown taildraggers, as it is a perfect and simple primer in how to fly one properly. I wish I'd had that down in Florida [where he took flying lessons]..."

Not for toddlers

Review Date: 2004-08-04
Amazon has this book listed as being appropriate for the "baby-preschool" level. That may be true for the illustration style, but the story is quite lengthy and detailed. My son is 3 1/2 and barely has the attention span to sit through this story, and he's an airplane fanatic.

The book is one of a series written by Lenski with similar illustation styles (two color line drawings) and a cast of characters with names like "Small" and "Shorty." The star of The Little Airplane is Pilot Small who takes out his little propeller plane for a leisurely spin, experiences some slight malfunctions, but lands safely, repairs the plane, and returns to the airport.

What makes the story lengthy are the details about how the plane is flown. We are told about which controls he uses in the cockpit to control the rudder, ailerons and elevator. We are brought through his safety checklist and the sequence of events that gets the plane into the air. The details set this book apart from many others written for young children. I've read many, many books about planes to my son and I learned something new from this one.

Unfortunately, I think the time has passed for the Lenski "Small" series. It appears to have been written originally for older children, back when printing technology was limited. Today, children have much more engaging illustrations competing for their attention, so this book seems dull in appearance. Unfortunately, the detailed text is may not be enough to engage a child who is young enough to accept the old fashioned appearance.

I think the audience for this book is quite limited. If you know a 3 or 4 year old who already has an exceptional knowledge of planes and flight, you may do well with this book. We found Lenski's book The Little Train to be much more enjoyable. It is a bit shorter and less bogged down with detail.

A surprisingly captivating book

This book was a gift and I originally thought that it was too detailed to be interesting to my 22-month-old son. However, it has a very calming quality and he insists on it every night before bedtime. The adventures move along frequently enough to hold his interest, without being overly stimulating. And he can identify elements he likes from the drawings, such as the propeller, the wind sock, the hangar, and the car on the ground.

His father and I appreciate the accurate details. I'm now on-line looking for other books by Lois Lenski, hoping that they, too, will be a hit for us.

A great series that grows with your child

Review Date: 2004-12-31
While the text may be lengthy for toddlers (I have a 3-1/2 year old who loves this book, borrowed from the library, that I'm buying him a copy), this is certainly a book that grows with the child. The engaging, simple pictures allow for much imaginative story telling (who ever said parents are supposed to read every word when the child isn't ready?), moving into reading more and more of the text as the child grows older. I trained for a private pilot license, and the details given are simple and factual; just the kind of real stuff that children interested in airplanes would want to know; it's stuff they absorb readily if the subject interests them. I'm glad to see these books back in circulation. The other books in Lois Lenski's series are great, too.

I don't know what the board book is like, but the rating of Baby-Preschool isn't accurate, at least for the 56-page Hard- and Paperback editions. This book is also great for older children who want to know more about the basic mechanics of airplanes and flight.
