This is one of my most cherished books from childhood. I always wished that a train would pull up to my house one night and whisk me away to see Santa Claus. The illustrations are wonderful as well. Around Christmas time I still like to make some hot chocolate and sit down and re-read this book.

I am a fan of Chris Van Alsburg and I believe that this is one of the most spectacular things he has ever written. What makes this a timeless work of art is not only the peaceful, dusk-cover pictures that evoke romantic images of the North but the precious concept of pure faith demonstrated through such a simple holiday symbol as the bell.

You are better off purchasing the limited edition, which comes with the cassette and cd. I found the limited edition set in Marshalls (after I made this purchase), for less than what I paid for just the book. I ended up giving my nephew this book and the casette tape which came with the limited edition. I kept the cd and other book for my son, who still reads along with the cd, a month after Christmas.

I had to drop and rebuild my 1979 VW bus engine and this was the perfect book for that job. The pictures are a great companion to the written instructions. There was a lot of info I learned that helped me look for some parts and the photos showed those parts in great detail. Great book and hopefully I'll never have to pick it up again.

This is an excellent book for a 3+ year old child. My grandson loved it. I had to read this book to him (he asked for it by name) every night for a week; sometimes he asked that I read it to him two times in a row.
He now knows what a Lunar Lander is and he knows there is no gravity in space.
I highly recommend this book.

This book is very well written and easy to understand and follow. It starts out explaining the basics of automotive engines, controls, sensors, etc then gets into how these systems interact with each other and then how to look at the different engine paramaters to determine how to alter controls and sensors related to pressures, speeds and temps to increase engine performance. Good read for the novice as well as the advanced tuner.

Whether you are into sport bikes, racing, cruising, or whatever. If its on the street with 2 wheels and a motor, you need to get this book! The closest you'll come to having a one on one coach. Practice sessions are all worked out. Shows you how to critique your own performance. Skills on turning, body position, shifting, braking, and how to get the most efficiency out of your riding. How to go faster safely, and handling your bike on the road. It is ALL in here!
Think you know how to ride? Ready for that track day? Grab this book first and show yourself a few MORE new things you never knew. Though this book is for more advanced riders, newer riders will benefit by learning better habits, and breaking bad ones.

If you ride a sport bike and want to learn to lean it correctly/safely around curves, fast without jerks and changes in the arch, this is the best specialized book for you! Learn about the common reasons people crash like you have never heard it before--why we panic and what that causes, which ultimately results in a crash. And how to overcome it! Great book.

I first read "A Twist of the Wrist 2: The Basics of High-Performance Motorcycle Riding", then I read this book. I greatly appreciated Twist of the Wrist for providing the geeky details and well-written descriptions of what was happening to the bike and rider when everything is working correctly (or not), but this book was able to add some more pictures that helped to clarify things which weren't clear to me from Twist of the Wrist.
There were some descriptions in Total Control that resonated better with me than what was in Twist of the Wrist, and vice versa. The same thing can be said for the drawings and pictures.
My recommendation: buy both books. If you don't like reading very much and want better step-by-step pictures, then Total Control is probably the better book for you. Once again, I strongly recommend buying both books - Total Control and Twist of the Wrist 2.

My first and still favorite text on piloting a plane

Review Date: 2008-05-15
I remember reading and re-reading this text as a young boy--fascinated by everything and anything related to airplanes--flying imaginary airplanes in my head with the admonition to always 'watch my angle of attack'. When I finally got my pilot's license years later, I credit this book with doing the most to make me a safe and confident pilot (second only to my great instructor.) It dispels the popular belief in the general public that the rudder turns the plane and the throttle makes it go faster, and explains to pilots the reality of flight: the elevator controls angle of attack and hence airspeed, the ailerons control the turn, and the rudder is primarily a means of correcting for physical phenomenon such as adverse yaw. Even today the largest killer of pilots is the stall/spin, the result of hoping that pulling back on the stick will make the ground go away, or that more inside rudder will fix that overshoot on final. Yes, Mr. Langewiesche repeats the point again and again, but it's worth repeating: the stick controls the angle of attack, and if you don't exceed the critical angle of attack, the plane won't stall. If the plane doesn't stall, it doesn't spin either. It's that simple, and that profound.
Yes, the physics and writing style are outdated (read Smith's "Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics" for a more complete yet still readable explanation of the physics of lift, and why Bernoulli's 'suction' and Langewiesche's 'downwash' are just two different ways of looking at the same phenomenon.) And if you're flying a modern unstable fighter or fly-by-wire jumbo jet Langewiesche's simple concepts break down. For today's modern GA aircraft, however, this is still the most readable text there is for explaining not how an airplane flies, but how to fly them.

To begin, the entire Amazon experience was great. The product itself was the icing on the cake. Any aspiring pilots, or veterans, should consider this a "must read" publication. It clarifies many misled bits of advice, about flight, and makes knowledge of aircraft easily understood.

This book is entertaining in many ways: like, if you consider some of the olde-worlde wisdom quaintly phrased, and the author's convictions, sometimes quite erroneous, confidently stated.
It is somewhat useful, as it does give some solid pointers about what to look out for (avoid) and what to do (technique) and what common pilot errors are, including some home-grown practical remedies and prevention.
When the author is writing based on his experience he is insightful, and you will gain a lot from his experience. When the author is trying to educate you on theory he evidently does not understand, he is not dangerous, but may leave you with the wrong idea about how things fly. For example, his vigorous dismissal of the fact that pressure differential between top and bottom surfaces wing causes lift, and his counter assertion that the wing stays up because it pushes the air down, is plain bull. The wings would then need to be at 45 degrees to the plane's longitudinal axis, and the airspeed would need to be humongous if that were true. Also, such a plane would never stall except at low speeds, and would be impossible to stall at high speed :)
The book is cheap. So, as long as you know enough physics to determine that the author does not, you will find value in anecdotal and experienced wisdom.
And, after all, you will own a classic that has fooled generations of pilots into buying it. I did.

I have not finished this book yet, but it is a manual not a novel: having said that... Well bound, heavy white paper, big text, images sharp, clear in strong half tone. There are no colour plates but the black and whites are stunning. This effort is in contrast to the original Nikon manual which is none of the above. There are a few curious spell errors, however,if you are a digislr rookie like me you will want all the help you can get to understand the encyclopeadic volume of informaton it takes to get the most from this fabulous camera.

I love my D80! And, I bought this camera instead of the newer ones because I have several lenses that I used with my N70 film Nikon. The newer cameras take their own lenses. This book is great--as are all the Lantern books I've used--because it SHOWS as well as TELLS how to use the many functions of the camera. I keep this book in my camera bag so I can reference any function that I need to use.

I much preferred Rod Machado's book. His humor can be a bit corny but you'll get through the book and understand the material much better.

I needed the PHAK for my aviation class @ SIU and the bookstores here were out. How they were out of PHAKS when there's only 70 students I don't know. I ordered it off of amazon and it was exactly what I was looking for.

FAA issued book. I used this book to prepare for the Private Pilot's License Written Test (ie. Ground School test). I haven't taken the test yet, but so far so good. This book was required by the ground school.
A great digest of aviation basics

This book is definitely the best introductory book to the main aviation concepts I ever read.
Each issue - from flight static and dynamics to FCS, propulsion, avionics and navigation, weather theory and influence, flight and ground operations - is considered in this book with a technical, but easily understandable, approach. The book is, as a matter of fact, an introduction and, therefore, is not suggested to experienced readers. It's, in any case, a five-star introduction.

I purchased this book because it was required for my automotive electronics class.. Although it's a two volume set, a lot of the same information can be found on both books. Never the less, it's a nice book to learn from and use as a reference when trouble shooting electrical circuits.
One huge issue though is because it's written with a students perspective in mind the quizzes/questions at the end of each chapter do not come with answers that you can use to cross check!

Comprehensive but lacking enough detail to explain theory

This like all automotive books from Thompson Delmar publishing tries to cover everything. The problem is it doesn't have enough detail to fully explain the theories being discussed. How can Hall effect sensors be fully explained without a picture of what it actually looks like in an automotive shop environment? Automechanics must know how to test a hall effect sensor to properly diagnose a crank no start condition. This test is done on the signal wire coming out of the sensor. There is only one signal wire coming from a hall effect sensor in an engine. On page 312, it shows a hall effect sensor with two signal wires going out of it. Which wire would be tested? The picture is misleading. That's just one example of many of how this book cuts corners and shortchanges in explaining.
If you need this book for class, pray that you have a conscientious teacher who will fully explain all the misleading pictures in this book. If you don't have a good teacher, you will most likely have to buy books by Halderman to understand what is being discussed in class and then you will be prepared to understand this book. If you can understand everything in this book then you are either a genius or you have been exposed to automotive electronics in a professional or hobbyist setting. In either case why even bother signing up for an automotive electronics class? I would give one star to this book but it challenged me and pointed in me in the right direction of what to study if I'm going to make any money from repairing automotive electronics. For that it gets two stars.

I bought this book because I wanted to expand my knowledge on cars and engines. It did not work out as expected. If you have NEVER worked on a car before and you have NO IDEA about parts then I do recommend this book to you. For someone that knows even the basics this book is totally pointless and boring. There is nothing to teach you. If you are the kind of person that brings the car to the mechanic and is like do whatever you have to do then buy the book. If you can make something as simple as an oil change by yourself then do not.
Extremely useful to this novice

I've always relied on mechanics (with mixed results), but I wanted to know what was going on with my car and to be able to perform basic maintenance myself. This book is very easy to use (MUCH better than my owner's manual). It provides a good overview of how cars work, as well as specific advice for particular repairs and maintenance. If you're already a gearhead, this is presumably too basic, but if the inside of your car is a great big mystery to you, this is definitely the book to get.

Before this book I didn't know a thing about cars. Now, I would still say that I don't but, I would NOT go to the mechanic for everything.

After watching my sister go through several Auto Tech classes to learn how to work on a car, I was intimidated by the amount of time & money I thought it would take to get the same knowledge. Then I found this book. I've been a faithful reader of the Dummies books for a long time, and this one just reinforced my opinion of them.
After reading this book, I am able to change my own oil, check & change my brakes, change a flat tire, know which replacement tire to buy and why, and diagnose almost any car problem myself. I have saved hundreds of dollars (maybe over $1000 by now) because I knew exactly what I needed a mechanic to do to my car whenever I took it in.
As a bonus, my car now runs better than it ever has before, because this book also covers preventative maintenance in extreme detail. It even lays out a monthly routine for you for checking most of the systems in your car.
I highly recommend this book to absolutely anyone who wants to learn about cars. Even if you know nothing except how to start, drive, and stop your car -- before reading this, I thought the rim CAME WITH the new tire! -- this book is for you.
