This book has been around for a while, now. The pictures aren't the best, but Mr. Hatfield has done his homework on this one. Like he says, the book isn't perfect, but if you want to restore a H-D, up to 1964, you must have this book. It also has info that is relevant to later models. The one thing I missed, though is more # identification on parts Harley had made for them. I mean oem info, from Bendix, etc.

As the title says, it's about racer's psychology and how to improve it, it covers many aspects of the human to help him perform better in racing.

As other Speed Secrets Books, it's well written with a lot of examples and illustrations.

I think racers who want to really accomplish in racing should get this book, and it's recommended to read the first books, and after doing some racing, this book should be read.

WE SPEND ALL THIS MONEY ON IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF OUR CAR AND FORGET ABOUT THE MOST INTEGRAL PART OF THE PACKAGE, THE DRIVER. THIS BOOK ADDRESSES THAT ISSUE FROM A VERY UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE. THE OTHER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES DEAL WITH DRIVING TECHNIQUES. THIS BOOK IS ABOUT THE MIND GAME INVOLVED WITH GOING FASTER. I FOUND IT VERY INSIGHTFUL. THE TECHNIQUES USED IN THIS BOOK ARE BENEFICIAL NOT ONLY TO DRIVING, BUT TO EXCELLING IN ONE'S DAY TO DAY LIFE! A QUICK READ WITH A LOT OF POSITVE BENEFITS!

What a revelation! We have been told for years that our mind harnesses the power to overcome all. In Ross and Ronn's book, these principles are succinctly laid out with techniques and exercises directly related to race driving. I recognized many situations in my own racing and have used their exercises to improve my performance and confidence on the race track. This book is a must read for anyone in racing (or in life)who wants to ensure consistency. For those who think racing is all guts - you are missing the boat (or shall I say the checkered flag) by not reading this book! PS - They also have a wonderful seminar too!

It's All Mental: What separates Good Drivers from Great Ones

Review Date: 2004-10-01
In the olympics, studies have shown that those who practice mentally (visualization, psychology, self-talk, etc) as well as physically (actual physical training) do better than those who just grind it out on the training field.

In a sport where there is a fusion of man and machine, it is even more important to "Maximize Your Racine Performance" by adhering to the strategies such as what Ross Bentley has outlined.

If you're a driver who has reached a plataeu and can't seem to improve, there's a great likelihood that it's not more practice or track time that's needed -- but more mental practice. And that's cheaper, too!

Ross outlines great mental techniques in this book that are easy to follow, and very applicable to the sport of race car driving.

For a bigger picture on Mental Training, I urge to to also look at Ken Baum's The Mental Edge. Then make sure you have this book by Ross to have mental training specific to race car driving.

Highly Recommended!

The title says it all - FMCSA Safety Regulations
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-24
This book is just what the title says -- it is the regulations published by the FMCSA for the trucking industry. Obituaries are more interesting to read. HOWEVER, if you are in the trucking industry there is something in there that pertains to you, whether you are a driver, a truck mechanic, builder, broker, etc, etc. And yes, it should be required reading for anybody in the industry, at least those portions that affect you. My gripe with this book, is the that it is totally written in government legal speak. Sometimes you have to spend too much time trying to understand what it is that they are trying to say. This book could be made some much better if they not only gave you the "rule", but then interpreted it into layman's terminology. There is a small section that attempts to do this with Q/A. But not enough detail. Tell us how to put the rule into action. Index the different sections that an individual needs to know. For example, does a driver need to know the intricate details of how to conduct a drug/alcohol test? No. He does need to know when he may be required to submit to one and the penalties for not doing so, or not doing so in a timely manner, including the fact that violating the rule could mean the loss your job and become unemployable in the industry. Conversely, does the person conducting a drug/alcohol screening need to know what is required in Pre-Trip Inspection? Again, NO. And to the cops in Spurbury, VT. I hope that you have had more training in these regs than just reading the book, and if not I will steer clear of your town because if you try to enforce these regulations and dont know what you doing, you are just going to make a bad day for a driver.

I was captivated by this book as a Child. It featured large interesting images of the wreck and heartfelt content about the Titanic and her casualties. I'd recommend this book for the same reasons I found it so intruding ten years ago... Another interesting book to follow up with this one would be Dr. Ballard's "Exploring the Titanic." Both help reinforce an interest in this significant historical event.

Would you ever stay on a boat that was sinking? The people on the Titanic had to make some decisions. Some people decided to stay on the Titanic, other people decided to hop into a lifeboat. I thought this book was very interesting. There was lots of action. (Example) the largest boat in the world hit an iceberg and started to sink! Some people even jumped of the large boat into the freezing water. There was a 12-year girl named Ruth that was left behind! The lifeboat that her mother and her two brothers were in was too crowded so she had to go in a lifeboat with a lot of strangers that Ruth didn't know. I would give these book 3 stars. I thought there were a lot of BRAVE characters, like Ruth. From this book I learned that you should always do what other people say.

This is one of the best how to books I've ever read. It is very clearly written and covers everything about building stitch and glue boats. There are lots of photos and the appendix lists lumber marine suppliers around the US. Depending on your boat's plans, you MAY not need this book. I built a Spindrift 11N and the designer's instructions were detailed enough so that I didn't need the book. However, there were still lots of helpful hints, theory, history, etc. in the book. Plus it cheap! Highly recommended.

I have read this book several times. He has a clear and logical way of presenting the stages of construction. His web site is informative and his video is equally as instructive. In terms of a complete "How to" series, I only wish other disciplines were as good.

In addition to the quality of his construction, I am particularly fond of his designs. Most other stitch and glue plans lack the elegance of Sam's designs.

Interesting, but no use to the first-time boat builder

Samual Devlin is clearly a god to many in the boat-building community, but this book is simply pitched too high for most beginners, and that's a shame given that it's marketed to those very beginners. The book's major flaw (or it's greatest strength, perhaps) is in its author's refusal to accept anything but the best tools or materials. So for instance he says "There can be no compromise: the plywood *must* be marine grade". I think it's fair to say that most people building stitch-and-glue boats are doing so for economic reasons, so why insist on hard-to-get highly expensive marine plywood?

You'll rapidly put this book down unless you're highly familiar with the arcane vocabulary of advanced boat-building which Devlin uses at every turn, and sadly, that's what I've done for now.

I *am* liking the simpler book by Jim Michalak - Boatbuilding for Beginners (and Beyond).

This book purports to cover the 351M/400 (335)series of engines. Don't believe it! It is a 221 to 351W text that barely makes any mention of the mid block engines. I am very disappointed.

The ideal guide for rebuilding the early Ford small blocks.

First,If you are about to rebuild an early model Ford small block engine I would suggest this book.If you are looking for a book on later model EFI Ford small blocks engines this book isnt the one you want.

This book is really a great book.Covers many factors to look at before you rebuild. You dont have to be a mechanic to read and understand this book.Covers all areas of rebuilding. There is even a section on performance tips and more importantly step by step instuctions with plenty of photos show make this book and this series of books ideal. Also,This book is an ideal book for those apprentices and those considering a mechanical apprenticeship.

This book is written in simple English.Anyone with an interest in cars would enjoy this book. There is so much this book has to offer. For the price alone its good value.I hope that more books like this will be written for other makes of engines too.

One thing I noticed is that the books from CarTech/SA Design tend to be better set out than the HPBooks. These new books from S-A Design/Cartech are better quality books than the earlier editions.

No matter what make of engine you are rebuiding you can benefit by reading this book.

If you are rebuilding an EFI Ford small block I would recommend this book:
"Ford Windsor Small Block Performance:parts and modifications for high performance street and racing."By Issac Martin. From HB Books. Its available here at amazon.com too.

The best analogy for describing this book is that it's like having several long conversations with a veteran engine builder. It's easy to read and contains lots of valuable tips as well as Ford specific things to watch for.

For you late model 5.0L guys, myself included, be aware that the book follows the build of an old-school 302. So the bottom end and valve train are covered pretty thoroughly but I finished craving a bit more 5.0L specific detail such as induction, fuel-injection, computers, etc.

Great how-to book

Review Date: 2005-11-21
This book is great for the novice engine builder looking for one book to show you how it's done. The magazine style writing with tons of pictures is easy to follow and includes lots of helpful tips. This book, together with a shop manual specific to your vehicle is all you will need to finish your project. The only thing that I found lacking was it could have used a little bit more detail on some of the finishing touches (ie. setting the rockers/valves - which is only explained with one picture/comment) of your engine build. After looking at several other books for information, I determined that this was the best / most current available. With all that said, my rebuilt motor runs great!!

This is the best book for troubleshooting that I have seen. There are nice flow charts that really help you to decide where to look. The text is well written and the drawings are clear. You don't even have to read between the lines to understand that an experienced mechanic has written this one. It doesn't just say "remove the flywheel", it tells you how to remove the flywheel. Review Date: 2008-02-14
This is an excellent book all the way through. Great diagrams and explanations on how to repair most small engines. Well written and very useful to the DIY repairman.

However,

If you're looking for a book that shows you how to change a spark plug, this is not the book for you. There are much better books out there for beginners and light tinkerers.

This book assumes that not only are you mechanically proficient and have the tools to repair it yourself but also posess a basic understanding of how small engine mechanisms work already or can figure it out without too much effort.

Not to say the average homeowner won't find it useful, but the author doesn't go in-depth or hold your hand through what should be moderately simple procedures for someone with basic experience in mechanical repair.

That's what makes this either a good book or a bad book. If you know or can stumble your way around engines, this is a great book that gives you the information you need to properly repair many different models and makes.

If you're someone whose lawnmower broke down last weekend and you thought it might be fun to fix it yourself but you don't have a lot of tools or experience on repairing engines then there are probably some better books out there.

I like this book simply because the author doesn't waste any time (or paper) explaining things that you should already know. Think of it like Small Engine Repair 201 instead of Small Engine Repair 101.

I'll probably hang onto this book for as long as I have small gas engines I may need to repair since it makes such a great reference book.

This book is very in-depth. From beginning to end it describes types of engines, troubleshooting, and individual engine components or systems. The book is certainly not a book for someone that does not already have a working knowledge of engines. The tech information and drawings are very confusing. There is little doubt that Mr. Dempsey knows all about engine repair. It is not a book for the average person that wants to learn to repair a lawn mower. If the author's intention was to provide a teaching text--in my opinion, he missed the mark.

Draw 50 Airplanes has been around for a while. I'm glad that it is still in print. Wish it had been around when I was a kid, doodling airplanes. A bunch of my favorites are there: Sopwiths, P-40s, Spitfires, F-86 Sabres, P-38s. Hopefully, someday, there will be a revised edition that can capture some late arrivals to the first century of flight that today's kids really like- the Space Shuttle, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk. There are dozens of "how to sketch", "how to draw" titles out there. This is not one of those books. This book skips the nuances of perspective and the agony of descriptive geometry. It is not about fine art... it is not about drafting... When you sign a note to a friend, did you ever want to be able to add a quick Spitfire with a flourish? One that someone else thinks looks like a Spitfire? Or how about a sketch of the Wright Flyer? This is THAT kind of a book. This is about the serious business of producing a happy characture of the airplane that dances in your head. It will egg you on until you pick up a pencil and make an airplane appear on the page. It will help you perfect that skill. A curved line here, a pair of straight lines there. One pencil stroke at a time. And it obviously wasn't written just for kids. This book can help just about anyone create some really neat airplane doodles. Who knows what comes from that... So many rich experiences in life depend on having some early successes, the hopeful satisfaction that causes you to press onward... J. Campbell Martin
